The review paper presents the main research topics of the XVIIIth INQUA Congress from selected sessions with contributions from the Czech participants. The results of Czech papers are highlighted and discussed in relation to progress in Quaternary research. Discussed are advances in topical subjects of international studies of Quaternary palaeoenvironments and climate change. Přispěvky českych učastniků na XVIII. kongresu INQUA v Bernu Referativní práce se zabývá odborným podílem českých účastníků na XVIII. kongresu INQUA , který se konal ve dnech 20. 7. až 29. 7. 2011 v Bernu. Jsou uvedeny výsledky českých výzkumů předložené v 10 vybraných víceoborových sekcích, které byly zaměřeny na chronologii a kvartérní záznamy, pan-evropskou korelaci kvartérní stratigrafie, vývoj krajiny v kvartéru, pleistocénní zalednění Asie, paleohydrologické archivy ve fluviálních prostředích, příčiny a význam povodní a požárů v přírodním systému a historii Země, ekologické odezvy klimatických změn v měřítku desítek až tisíců let, rekonstrukce historických změn klimatu podle dokumentárních záznamů a na geoarcheologické aspekty vztahů mezi přírodním prostředím a člověkem. V diskuzi jsou komentovány hlavní tématické okruhy oborově integrovaných výzkumů kvartérního období: a) stratigrafie a chronologie kvartérních mořských a suchozemských sedimentů, procesů a událostí, b) klimatické změny v kvartéru a jejich paleoenvironmentální důsledky, c) historie člověka v kvartéru, d) identifikace klíčových oblastí Země pro výzkum kvartéru.

This paper examines (i) the state of environmental conditions in two low-income urban communities in Accra, Ghana, using a Participatory Rapid Assessment (PRA) method, and (ii) changes in the environmental conditions in the two low-income communities over the years using the PRA method. The PRA was augmented with qualitative interviews with selected heads of household and other stakeholders from the study communities. The results showed that environmental conditions in the two study communities were poor as indicated by the computed average scores for the environmental problem areas. However, conditions were poorer in Chorkor compared to La. The paper recommends that local governments units in Ghana must prioritise sustained, improved, and reliable funding for Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) to ensure undisruptive implementation of environmental health programs and policies. This must be accompanied with improved community education and sensitization on proper sanitary practices, which have the potential to mitigate the effects of disease epidemics such as cholera in the two communities. The study also provides important perspectives on differentials in environmental conditions in low-income communities in urban Ghana.

This paper presents the model of identity research using the street names from five major Kosovar cities. The purpose of this research is to demonstrate the fact that identity in the urban environment can be determined through the analysis of street names, to uncover the difference in the presence of hodonyms that express regional identity from those that express national identity, and to investigate the presence of urban toponyms of international importance. This paper also aims to examine the relationship between regional identity and ethnic and religious structure, as well as to identify the role of historical-political circumstances at the level of the manifestation of regional identity. We found that the regional identity has been expressed more deeply compared to the national and international hodonyms, which have a lower representation. Although regional hodonyms dominated in all cities that were analyzed, there were differences in the representation of regional hodonyms which were related to personalities, events, or geographical objects that belong to the respective city or surroundings.

Transport is one of the important factors influencing the arrangement of spatial relations and creating of spatial interactions in society. This proposition can also be applied to the forming of links within an urban system. In connection with this it is possible to point out that, to a large extent, the arrangement of transport relations also predetermines monocentric or polycentric organization of urban systems. The paper deals with an analysis of these connections, both in theory and in practice. The example of the eastern part of the Czech Republic, based on public transport supply, serves to identify transport interactions between 51 centres that make daily interactions between them possible. Apart from the typology of spatial pattern of the found transport interactions the paper also quantifies the benefits for the population of the centres, brought about by potential polycentricity (e.g. a greater plurality of choices regarding the place of daily activities). The benefits are analyzed by means of the calculation of the daily economic potential expressed as the total number of accessible jobs. Dopravní vztahy mezi středisky osídlení ve východní části ČR a jejich potenciál k formování polycentricity Doprava patří k důležitým faktorům, které ovlivňují uspořádání prostorových vztahů a vytváření prostorových interakcí ve společnosti. Tuto tezi lze aplikovat i na problematiku formování vazeb v rámci sídelního systému. V souvislosti s tím je možné zdůraznit, že organizace dopravních vazeb mezi středisky osídlení do značné míry předurčuje i jejich monocentrické, respektive polycentrické uspořádání. V příspěvku je pozornost věnována rozboru těchto souvislostí jak v teoretické, tak i v praktické rovině. Na příkladu území ve východní části Česka jsou prostřednictvím nabídky spojů hromadné dopravy identifikovány dopravní vztahy mezi 51 středisky, které umožňují vznik každodenních interakcí mezi nimi. Kromě typologie prostorové konfigurace nalezených dopravních vazeb je výstupem článku i kvantifikace přínosů, které potenciální polycentričnost obyvatelům středisek přináší (např. vyšší pluralita voleb místa realizace každodenních činností). Přínosy jsou analyzovány prostřednictvím výpočtu tzv. denního ekonomického potenciálu vyjádřeného jako celkové množství dostupných pracovních příležitostí.

Land use and land cover changes occur throughout the world, but none is more concerning than tropical deforestation, much of it for agricultural purposes. Rural-rural frontier migrant farmers such as those colonizing the Sierra del Lacandón National Park in Petén, Guatemala act as a primary direct agent in this land cover conversion. This paper seeks to compare three different algorithms for monitoring changes in forested land cover, making use of freely available remotely sensed Landsat images from two years, 1991 and 2000. In the intervening 9 years, some forested land was converted to cropped, pasture, or fallow land, while other areas experienced no change. This paper contains a detailed description of the methods employed for three different change detection techniques, producing a total of five land change maps: multidate principal components analysis (PCA), normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI ) image differencing, and brightness greenness wetness (BGW) image differencing. Of the five land change maps produced, the Greenness component of the BGW transformation had the highest overall accuracy, at 86%, and is conservative in detecting change. The amount of change detected by this algorithm represents approximately 300 km2 of forest loss, or 11.9% of the area examined.

The paper gives an overall report on historical floods in the Sazava River Basin, focused on the preinstrumental period in particular. Documentary sources, flood marks as well as measured data were made use of. The longitudal profile of the Sazava River from 1933, containing the maximum amount of factual information, represented the main tool. Field investigation was carried out especially on water mills and weirs, power plants, ferries, footbridges, bridges and other buildings and settlement parts around the Sazava River, which were located within the reach of floods and to which the upper reaches were related. The paper presents the first more detailed chronology of flood events on the Sazava River within the time limits of the years 1515 and 1891. Quotations from chronicles and other documentary sources are expanded by brief description of a flood’s process on the Vltava River (and/or in the Vltava and Elbe River Basins) so that the chronicle record is verified according to the overall context. Each individual flood also includes a classification according to time occurrence and, at the end, a discussion on seasonality of all documented events. The most important event, from July 1714, is dealt with in the most detailed way. It is especially this event – often reflected in historical literature – that not only belongs to the really extraordinary events of the basin under review, but generally to the most remarkable extremes recorded in the written history of the Czech Lands. Historické povodně na Sázavě Článek přináší souhrnnou zprávu o historických povodních v povodí Sázavy se zaměřením zejména na předinstrumentální období. Využity jsou dokumentární zdroje, povodňové značky i měřené údaje. Základním podkladovým materiálem byl podélný profil Sázavy z roku 1933, který obsahuje maximum věcných informací. Předmětem terénního průzkumu byly zejména sázavské mlýny a jezy, elektrárny, převozy, lávky, mosty a případně jiné stavby a části sídel, které byly v dosahu povodní a k nimž byly maximální hladiny vztahovány. Vyhodnocena je rovněž dostupnost informací o historických povodních, které přinášejí historické povodňové značky. Analýzou dostupných podkladů bylo zjištěno, že v 30. letech ještě poměrně bohatý fond povodňového značení dnes reálně existuje z jedné třetiny. Článek představuje první podrobnější chronologii historických povodňových událostí na Sázavě. V celém období let 1500–2000 se podařilo identifikovat 13 povodní s největší pravděpodobností významnějších než poslední významná povodeň na přelomu března a dubna 2006. Historické značky potvrzují fakt, že jarní povodeň 2006 byla čtvrtým nejvýznamnějším případem v období 1845–2007, po povodních 1862, 1845 a 1891 a to v úseku toku od Davle po Havlíčkův Brod. Podle frekvence jednotlivých výskytů povodní je zřejmé, že i v minulých staletích stoupá frekvence povodní od prosince až po březen. Nejrizikovějším obdobím pro velké povodně Sázavy byl historicky konec zimy. Nejčastěji zde docházelo k povodním na přelomu března a dubna, o něco nižší frekvenci měly povodně na přelomu února a března. Z letních povodní jsou typičtější události červencové, významnější povodně v srpnu či září jsou vzácné. Podrobněji je zpracován nejvýznamnější případ z července 1714. Tento případ, reflektovaný častěji v historické literatuře patří nejen mezi zcela mimořádné případy v právě zkoumaném povodí, ale obecně mezi nejpozoruhodnější extrémy zaznamenané v psané historii českých zemí. Citace kronikářských a jiných dokumentárních zdrojů je v článku rozšířena o stručnou charakteristiku průběhu povodně na Vltavě (případně v povodí Vltavy a Labe), tak aby dle celkových souvislostí byla kronikářská zpráva ověřena. Každá jednotlivá povodeň obsahuje i kategorizaci dle časového výskytu a sezonality.

This paper analyses the variability of life expectancy at birth in Europe after 1950. It aims to assess the development of the East- West mortality gap and to identify the sub-regions or countries that most influenced mortality divergent and convergent trends in Europe. To achieve the goals, European countries are divided into Western and Eastern according to their political history, and the squared coefficient of variation is used for analysis of variability. This measure is further decomposed into between- and within- group components. The results of the study show that there were 4 divergent periods during the study period associated with the delayed cardiovascular revolution and mortality crisis in Eastern Europe and the COVID-19 pandemic. Variability of mortality in Europe during the pandemic was the highest in comparison to all previous divergent periods. Throughout the studied period, the between-group variability was influenced by both the continual progress of Western Europe and the lagging of Eastern Europe, with both regions contributing more or less similarly. However, since the 1990s, in case of within-group variability, a strong dominance of Eastern Europe can be observed, and therefore post-socialist countries deserve special attention. The results also suggest that some longer-term trends in behavior and attitudes towards health may persist in society, and that in the case of an unexpected crisis, there is a greater risk of mortality divergence reappearing.

Recently, geography has included in research the increasing role of religion in postmodern Western society and space. Religion is no more being understood as an objective truth, but as an individual experience of a person with a significant impact on the perception of space and place-making. This problematic undoubtedly requires a new theoretical and empirical perception in the new geographies of religion. This paper appeals for the geographical study of the relation between religion and (postsecular) space could be significantly enhanced using feminist approaches, which enable the inclusion of personal experiences and individuality in the geographies of religion. Using the feminist approaches, the changes in religious climate, ongoing currently in the West, including Czechia, could be better addressed in geography. Thus, the paper theoretically discusses the potential of feminist approaches and argues especially for the relevancy of four topics, personal experience of people, emotions, embodiment, and the everydayness, which can offer new insights into understandings of the relation between religion and space. Similarly, methodologies used by feminist scholars provide unique option for getting to know how religious people interact with sacred as well as secular space. Therefore, the paper aims to justify the contribution of feminist approaches and the empirical research considering the creation of sacred space and framing the everyday religious experience of people.

The Tokaj wine region has been declared as a historical landscape by the decree of the National Ministry of Human Capacities in 2012. The historical landscape is defined in the Act LXIV of 2001 on the Protection of Cultural Heritage as an area under the preservation of Historical Monuments. The Tokaj Wine Region is the only legally recognized historical landscape in Hungary. This protection aims to preserve the historical built and natural environment as well as the traditional land use methods. The historical landscape, in the case of Tokaj, is a legal tool to increase the heritage protection level of the wine region. Nevertheless, no further details have yet been communicated on the preservation method. In this matter, protection remains on the level of discourse which puts emphasis on the expected perspectives in territorial planning and development. It may create a narrative that might potentially transform the territory. The region of our case study has been inscribed as a cultural landscape on the UNESCO World Heritage List and was added to the World Heritage List in 2002. Besides, the national government recognized the region as a territory of priority development in 2014 and a territory of priority touristic development in 2017. The area in question is marked by the stark contrast between social inequality and the image of the prestigious wine sector. In this paper, after providing a discussion of the institutional background of the adoption of the historical landscape in Hungary, I describe the different protection tools from the perspective of heritage conservation in order to reflect on the conception of the historical landscape: how was the region recognized as a historical landscape, and what was the purpose of this recognition? The main aim of the paper is to analyse the institutional process that led to the integration of a new object of protection in Hungary, called historical landscape.

This paper explores the entanglement between photography and aerial military operations during the World Wars, showing how, in warfare, the camera became a technology of power serving a dual purpose: 1) It was a weapon used to map the territory as well as to detect and bomb specific targets, and 2) it constituted a powerful propagandistic medium employed to circulate persuading and aesthetically innovative aerial vistas among civilians. The technological and industrial sophistication that was adapted to the modern aerial battlefield required optical and photo-developments. These technical improvements challenged military activity while also reshaping civilians’ perception and conception of the landscape as well as determining new aesthetic canons. At the core of this article there is the notion of training of the eye – understood as the process, which involved both experts and the general public, of assimilating new photographic vistas from the sky. Using mostly the North American and German frames of reference, and interweaving military technology, visual culture, and landscape studies, this paper analyzes production and reception of “the view from above” mainly through mass-market illustrated magazines, such as the American Life and the German Berliner Illustrirte Zeitung. Developed within the military context, the peculiarity of aerial photography became embroiled with the idea of a cold, hunting, distanced and simultaneously penetrating gaze. However, recent scholarship understands the aerial view differently, due to the latest use of aerial photography for environmental science, and with the purpose of raising public awareness on the devastating ecological impact of industrialization and militarization. The contemporary progression from aerial photography to satellite imagery can in fact be interpreted along two directions: the God's-eye view of surveillance and/or the bird’s-eye view of environmental care.

The aim of this paper is to critically review recent EU level debates on territorial impact assessment, which serves as a tool to improve the understanding of uneven territorial impacts of the EU sectoral policies. The paper also seeks to elicit (1) which European countries employ territorial impact assessment when designing various national policies and (2) how this tool is used in different governance environments. Particular attention is paid to the case of Czechia. The paper elaborates upon the state-of-the-art tools used on a national level and analyses the motivation of actors on regional and local levels to use such tools in their decision-making process.

This paper deals with the socio-spatial relations of changes in the concept of place. Since the 1970s, place has been one of the key terms of humanistic geography. Therefore, this paper reflects how the concept of place, its functions and meanings could be applied in the changing space-time and social contexts. The ‘exotic’ phenomenon of the American Bar which had penetrated into Europe in the first half of the 20th century can be regarded as a representative of place when it had emerged during Americanisation as a new cultural element. This article compares the interwar development of this phenomenon in two European capitals (Berlin, Prague) and analyses both differences and the common attributes of the process of forming place. Emphasis is placed not only on the localisation of the American Bar, but also on more complex historical and geographical analysis of its development and perception that were characteristic exclusively for the Central European region. Using the archive materials, the contemporary press, legislative measures and professional and memoir literature, the study confirms that the American Bar phenomenon had acquired different meanings within different contexts which had changed over time and which can be documented through the “spreading” of this phenomenon in space.

As an interdisciplinary discipline, historical geography uses a diverse aggregate of historical sources, from traditional written through tangible up to pictorial, i.e., iconographic. From the pictorial sources, we can separate an individual group of cartographic materials – old maps and plans, which are one of the most important sources of information in current historical geographic research. The paper briefly summarizes the development of historical geography and then addresses the presentation of the source materials in historical geography. It draws attention to classification of the sources concerning their form and purpose and then focusses on historiographic sources of comparative and individual character. In addition to traditional comparative cartographic works (the Müller map, the military surveys and the stable cadaster), the paper emphasizes the individual maps of smaller territorial units – maps of estates – as sources that originated until the mid-19th century and as still relatively insufficiently utilized material. Through their analysis and interpretation, it is possible to obtain relatively detailed knowledge on the historical landscape of the pre-industrial period, thus filling blank spots in the research on past landscapes. The paper documents the testimonial value of these maps with an example of two aristocratic estates, those of Jilemnice and Nové Hrady, and a comparison of several specific features (depiction of the settlement, land cover, and map legends).

In recent years, Ethiopia has experienced fast economic growth and has been a major recipient of development and humanitarian aid. However, these developments were unsuccessful in eliminating food insecurity problems, and Ethiopia continues to be a considerably famine-prone country. The aim of this paper is to examine the applicability of Howe’s framework of the six archetypal situations symptomatic to famines (watch, price spirals, aid magnet, media frenzy, overshoot, and peaks) to the 2015–2016 food crisis, which left an estimated 15 million Ethiopians in need of acute food assistance. This paper observes that the food crisis proved to have some of Howe’s archetypes including watch, price spirals, and, to a lesser extent, media frenzy and peaks. Even though the aid magnet and overshoot were not recorded, the dynamics of the 2015–2016 food crisis confirmed Howe’s argument that the current system of humanitarian assistance does not lead to timely and effective responses. In this paper, I also argue that the Ethiopian political context further exacerbates the food insecurity situation of the country.

This paper aims to explore the influence of related variety on direct state-supported R&D cooperation across various geographical levels to understand regional performance differentiation and economic base restructuring in Czechia by employing Frenken et al.’s (2007) methodological approach to calculate a related and unrelated variety for all NACE and NACE C-Manufacturing. Findings indicate that the city of Prague has the highest unrelated and related variety, followed by the cities of Brno, Ostrava, and Pilsen. Calculation just for C-Manufacturing changes the ordering significantly. Furthermore, intra-regional and extra-regional pairwise R&D cooperation in joint projects is calculated. The cluster analysis of Czech microregional data (SO ORP) reveals patterns such as emerging collaborators and collaboration powerhouses. Linear regression analyses established a strong positive association between R&D collaboration intensity and related variety, while a negative link was observed with unrelated variety. Similar relationships were observed in the manufacturing sector (NACE-C).

The present paper attempts to develop a new model by considering various indicators of different types of land degradation or desertification. These types include water erosion, soil salinity, vegetation degradation, and lowering of ground water table. The indicators can be used to find areas with higher rates of degradation which are called Potential Risk Areas (risky zones) in this paper, and can also be used to estimate the probability that degradation will increase in these areas. The Mond river basin, located in the southern part of Iran, has been selected as a test area to assess the risk and kind of desertification. For this purpose two sub basins of the Khormuj and Khane-Zenian & Siakh-Darengun have been chosen for detailed study as these two provide enough variation in climatic conditions like rainfall and topography. The different kinds of data gathered from records and published reports of the different governmental offices of Iran have been used for this purpose. The thresholds for the severity classes of indicators have been established and then the hazard map for each indicator of types of desertification has been prepared in a GIS. The risk maps of water erosion, soil salinization, lowering of water table, and vegetation degradation have been produced for both sub basins. Areas on the maps are assigned to risk classes on the basis of risk scores derived by considering the cumulative effects of all indicators overlying the area in the GIS. It was possible to distinguish the areas under ‘actual risk’ from areas under ‘potential risk’ of desertification types. Also areas under potential risk are classified to subclasses with different probability level to show a statistical picture of risk in future. The final map of risk of desertification is produced by overlaying all four maps of degradation types. Between the two basins the overall environmental condition in the Khormuj sub basin is worse. Results show that potential risk areas are much widespread than areas under actual risk in the upper reaches (of both sub basins) of Mond basin, indicating further threat of land degradation or desertification in the future. The percent of areas under actual risk are much more extensive in the lower reaches (Khormuj sub basin), indicating the higher degradation at present. It is hoped that this attempt using GIS will be found applicable for other regions of the world.

Although participatory research can be an improvement over conventional research, there is a lack of self-critique and self-reflection by scholars. The aim of this paper was to develop a method of participatory research in human geography based on a case study of the local community. We evaluated the positive and negative aspects of carrying out participatory research in community development from the local community and academic points of view. The participatory method was used in a rural local community in Slovenia, where cultural values were identified as an alternative developmental source. The method was presented in detail in three steps: 1) knowledge acquisition, 2) knowledge synthesis, 3) knowledge implementation and evaluation. The results yielded important social impacts, some economic and cultural impacts, and no significant ecological impacts. The paper discusses the impacts of conducting such research on the local community. It recognizes that, if the community is actively engaged in research, outcomes are likely to be matched to its needs and expectations. We discussed scholars’ bias towards economic aspects of community development and the fact that ignoring local knowledge may result in the failure of developmental initiatives. There is a need for more accurate and unbiased critical assessment of long-term impacts of carrying outparticipatory research. We believe we avoided two common traps of participatory research: regarding the positivist critique, this method offers sufficient scientific vigour and could be reproduced in similar communities; regarding the post-structural critique, personally committing stakeholders towards implementation and legitimising all social groups to overcome intrinsic power relations within the community. We concluded that participatory methods are important for obtaining local knowledge that complements traditional academic research.

The paper evaluates measures taken to restore mountain Peat Bogs and their effect on hydrological regime, with the main focus on groundwater levels. The level of groundwater is a key factor in maintaining the character of mountain Peat Bogs and the main objective of restoration is to increase and stabilize the groundwater level in disturbed Peat Bogs. At the same time, the paper provides a complex overview of the topic, which is being often discussed nowadays, mostly due to a big retention potential of mountain Peat Bogs. The paper is based on detailed measurements of groundwater levels in a selected experimental drainage ditch in the catchment of the Rokytka stream. Basic statistical characteristics, the equation of Penman-Montheit or antecedent precipitation index were used to show the dependence of groundwater level on precipitation or evapotranspiration. The results show a positive influence of the restoration measures on Peat Bogs. In this case it has been confirmed that restoration measures cause increase of groundwater level and decrease its fluctuation in the Peat Bog.

The contemporary regional geography paradigm is characterized by emphasizing the socially constructed nature of regions. However, the discussion on the conceptualization of region is very rich, it does not reach universal conclusion. Such a universal conceptualization is probably neither possible nor desirable. This paper aims to contribute to the ongoing discussion. It examines the various approaches towards region with special focus on the conceptualization of the institutionalization of the region based on the heuristic literature review and it attempts to propose more complex (but not ultimate) theoretical onceptualization of region that should enable to bridge the duality of region; addressed as an “animate”, constantly changing, phenomenon which also makes it a resource for regional actors to meet thein particular goals, one that people may perceive and feel attached to while further mediating their images thereof. The paper builds upon the Lefebvre’s theory of the societal production of space and the Paasi’s theory of the institutionalization of region and presents the idea of the societal production of region. It argues that any complex approach to region must incorporate three levels of region: “given” (practice of region), “made” (representation of region) and “perceived” (idea of region). Better understanding of the concept of region is still more necessary and relevant especially due to the increasing pressure on the applicability of regional research. Thus, the paper suggests the closer insight into the interrelation of three mentioned levels of region is crucial from the view of the contemporary state of art. The article focuses on geoparks as areas with a specific form of local heritage protection. It contributes to a research into two interconnected fields: firstly, the research into local people’s participation in local development; secondly, the research into tourism sustainability. Discussion of foreign publications reveals that in the context of Czechia geoparks are misunderstood concept. This argument is supported by a case study from one part of the National Geopark Železné hory. The field research proved that there are significant barriers to meeting the purpose of geoparks. Two conditions are required in geoparks: the possibility of cooperation among local actors and the ability to be competitive through a diverse offer of services and products. The paper discusses factors affecting the actual state of society and their operation in the local development. The aim of the paper is to identify the obstacles to the development of geoparks as a reflection of the problems in local and regional development. In addition, the article deals with possible instruments for the management of geoparks and their utilization for effective coordination of local development.

This paper examines different forms of leadership in strategic planning in structurally affected regions of Czechia. Based on the leadership concepts and strategic planning in municipalities, evaluates different leadership approaches according to the population size of municipalities and the stability/continuity of municipal representatives. Four types of leaders were identified, with entrepreneurial leadership being the most important in all examined regions. The dependence of the types of leadership on the stability/ continuity of government in strategic planning was revealed, while, the dependence on the population size of municipalities was no. The importance of entrepreneurial leadership increases with the increasing number of electoral cycles elected leaders remain in office.

Sanitation change continues to be on the forefront of the global development agenda, even as it is becoming clear that the targets established in the Sustainable Development Goals will not be met. But since improving access to safely managed sanitation facilities remains a cost-effective and impactful measure to improve people’s lives, it is still important to assess currently implemented policies to be able to learn from best practices and to understand how different approaches work under different contexts. This paper provides comparative analysis of country-level policies in India and Ethiopia, two countries that achieved notable progress in eliminating open defecation through distinct sanitation strategies, with the aim of confronting the advantages and disadvantages of both approaches. While in India the primary emphasis has been on the supply-side, i.e., provision of subsidized sanitation infrastructure, Ethiopian strategy prioritized the demand-side by addressing change in sanitation behavior through Community Total Led Sanitation. The analysis shows that neither of the strategies can fully achieve the sanitation change and a combination of both seems to be the most impactful approach in combating open defecation. It also argues that policymakers must consider not only local socioeconomic and budgetary constraints but also historical, institutional, sociocultural, and geographical specifics in deciding what type of subsidies would be the most fitting. At the same time, they also need to address the appropriate social norms to achieve the desirable change in sanitation behavior.

Landscape is considered a specific type of heritage, and cultural landscapes provide an interface between nature and culture, the tangible and intangible, and biological and cultural diversity. They represent a closely woven network of relationships and the essence of cultural and personal identity. The most valuable cultural landscapes are designed landscapes or landscape parks. This paper focuses on landscaping activities associated with park foundation and management, especially those involving terrain changes and the remodeling of the natural topography. Terrain changes in landscape parks are typically meant to be hidden from viewers and to mimic natural lines and shapes. The paper focuses on determining to what degree the natural topography was used and changed, as well as what impact it had on the form and creation of the parks. Terrain changes should differ according to the natural topography, the landscape design activities, and contemporary landscape trends. Archival sources, including written documents, maps, and pictures, were considered viable sources. Four model areas were chosen for a detailed analysis of landscaping and design activities and their impact on the terrain: landscape parks around manor houses in Krásný Dvůr, Jemčina, Petrohrad, and Chudenice.

The health risk behaviour (HRB) of teenagers, especially substance abuse, is one of the most serious problems of today’s public health arena. The aim of this paper is to assess the extent of the multiple health-risk behaviours within the teenage population and to analyse the role of the individual and family structure as well as educational and geographic factors in the combination of their risk behaviours (frequency of smoking, alcohol intoxication and lifetime cannabis use). The data for this paper come from an on-line survey among elementary school students in 19 selected schools in Prague and 18 other elementary schools throughout Czechia. Family composition and relationship with the adolescent’s mother were confirmed as significant variables associated with risk behaviours. Adolescents coming from two-parental families had a significantly lower prevalence rate of all three HRB than students living with only one parent or in zero-parent families. Respondents who declared the highest satisfaction with the relationship with their mother had the lowest prevalence of all three HRB characteristics. Regarding leisure time activities, going out with friends clearly increased the risk of HRB, and having specific hobbies reduced the risk of HRB’s. The strongest association revealed was the one between the co-occurrence of health risk behaviours and going out with friends. Significant associations with the aggregate municipality characteristics were confirmed only in the case of marijuana use. It is thus mainly the family and peer domain where the prevention and health policies have to focus. Víceúrovňová analýza zdravotně rizikového chování českých teenagerů Zdravotně rizikové chování teenagerů, především pak užívání návykových látek, je jedním z nejožehavějších problémů v rámci zdravotní problematiky. Cílem tohoto článku je popsat rozsah vícenásobného zdravotně rizikového chování v rámci náctileté populace a také analyzovat roli individuálních a rodinných faktorů, stejně tak jako školního prostředí a geografických faktorů na kombinace rizikového chování mladých lidí v Česku. Hodnocena je frekvence kouření, zkušenosti s opilostí a také užívání marihuany. Data pro tento výzkum byla získána v rámci šetření provedeného on- -line mezi žáky devátých ročníků 19 základních škol v Praze a 18 základních škol ve zbytku republiky. Výsledky ukazují, že složení rodiny a zejména pak kvalita vztahu s matkou byly potvrzeny jako významné proměnné spojené s rizikovým chováním v tomto věku. Adolescenti pocházející z úplných rodin (s oběma rodiči), měli signifikantně menší prevalenci všech tří rizikových chování oproti studentům, kteří žili v rodině pouze s jedním ze svých biologických rodičů, či zcela bez rodičů. Také respondenti, kteří deklarovali vysokou spokojenost se svým vztahem k matce, měli nejnižší prevalenci rizikových chování. Pokud jde o volnočasové aktivity, je to především „chození ven s kamarády a partou“, které očividně nejsilněji zvyšuje pravděpodobnost, že dojde k rizikovému chování. Naopak, specifické koníčky (v tomto případě různé kroužky a zájmová sdružení) redukovala toto riziko. Signifikantní asociace s agregátními veličinami (charakteristikami obcí) byly potvrzeny pouze v případě užívání marihuany, u ostatních druhů rizikového chování tedy geografické faktory neměly prokazatelný vliv. Je tedy jasné, že prevence a zdravotní politika v této oblasti rizikového chování adolescentů musí být zaměřena na první místě na rodinu a oblast vrstevnických vztahů.

The paper investigates some of the epistemological and methodological challenges concerning multi-local research in four Czech rural areas that have recently embarked upon a project of international tourism which uses public space and rural landscape as one of its principal attractions. The aim of the paper is to discuss the degree of relevancy of certain methods, research strategies and conceptual tools in general and the ways they are reflected and applied in our research. The paper also presents some of the research outcomes that illustrate the application of these theoretical and methodological approaches. The issues discussed in this paper include theoretical and practical implications defining modern rurality as an unbounded and fluid concept, and creating a conceptual framework for the author’s empirical research on ‘Dutch villages’. The main part of the paper is devoted to theoretical and practical aspects of carrying out multi-sited ethnography as a research strategy for the study of rural development through tourism. The question is whether this method can be a legitimate proposition for contemporary research of modern rurality that seeks to understand social change associated with the post-socialist transformation of Czech rural space.

Very little is known about the investment climate and operations of MNEs in Cuba due to limited data provided by the Cuban government. In this paper, we explore the investment climate in Cuba and identify factors that limit the activities of MNEs. We also assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the future prospects for MNEs in Cuba. Our research is based on question¬naires and semi-structured interviews in MNEs operating in Cuba. MNEs consider low macroeconomic stability, the impossibility of acquiring real estate, access to financing and the movement of capital, and profit repatriation as the most problematic factors for their business activities. On the other hand, IPR protection, corruption, the skills and education of the available workforce and the availability of electricity were assessed as the least problematic. Less than half of the MNEs interviewed found positive changes con¬cerning the investment climate in Cuba during recent years. This implies limited prospects for economic growth in the near future.

This paper describes the course of migration and expansion of small mammals in the Makalu Barun region influenced by the orogenetic uplift of the East Nepal Himalaya and climatically conditioned changes in the extent of morphogenetic zones from the Upper Pleistocene up to the present. The results of zoological and parasitological research are compounded with the knowledge of the dynamic development of landforms, which testifies to significant changes in the high-mountain environment during the Quaternary. The migration of Palearctic species of small mammals across the gradually emerging orographical barrier during the orogenesis of the High Himalaya was completely interrupted by the glaciation in the Upper Pleistocene. This extensive glaciation also excluded occurrence and survival of small mammals in the high-mountain valleys of the Makalu Barun region. Migration routes and the extension of the territory of small mammals remained open only in the periglacial zone of the Arun and Barun Khola valleys. Following the interstadial period of warmer and humid climate conditions were changed by the Late Glacial Maximum when small mammals were again pushed away from heavily glaciated valleys to the lower altitude periglacial zone. During the Holocene interglacial, the occurrence of fauna and flora in the high-mountain valleys depended on repeated spatial changes of periglacial and glacial morphoclimatic zones. Current biogeographical hazards are accentuated due to the rapid retreat of glaciers, the expansion of the periglacial morphoclimatic zone and the increased human impact in the High Himalaya.

The Georgian region, Samtskhe-Javakheti, has a long tradition of pastoralism. Our research focused on the study of pastoral agricul¬ture across XVI–XX centuries. The study is based on census documents, which provide information on the number of sheep and their distribution, statistical and modern field-based materials. The research goal was to study the pastoral systems and related socio-eco¬nomic sectors and analyze their spatial and temporal dimensions. The paper presents thematic maps prepared by the authors, which reflect the state of pastoralism in the sixteenth to twentieth centuries and the present situation. The tabular and cartographic material presented allows to assess the changes that have taken place over a long time and to analyze modern conditions.

Changes in the extent and occurrence of non-forest woody vegetation in the agricultural landscape of the Novodvorsko and Žehušicko region in the Central Bohemia during the last 60 years are presented in the paper. The study is based on a comparison of data (landscape structure indicators) from two time horizons – 1950 and the present (2011). Historical black and white aerial photographs from 1950 and color orthophotomaps from 2006 were used as data sources. Furthermore, the present state of the vegetation was investigated and specified by field mapping in 2011. The extent and changes of non forest woody vegetation were observed in natural (biochores) and cultural (landscape character areas) units with the aim to find out differences dependent on natural and cultural conditions. Results confirm that the quantity as well as the distribution of elements of non-forest woody vegetation changed during the last 60 years in an important way. Significant decrease in the area of non-forest woody vegetation and extinction of many important biotopes are among the main results of the work. The study provides strong evidence that changes in land use and landscape structure have a great influence on non-forest woody vegetation in all aspects. At the end of the paper, the reasons for the changes are discussed. In general, intensification and mechanization of agriculture has caused extinction of fine-grained landscape microstructure especially as to arable lands connected with removal of dispersed vegetation structures. Straightening of watercourses and destruction of meanders with their riparian vegetation has had the same effect. Vývoj nelesní dřevinné vegetace v krajině Novodvorska a Žehušicka (Střední Čechy) Rozptýlená zeleň (nelesní dřevinná vegetace stromů a keřů) je významným prvkem krajinné struktury, podílí se na její funkčnosti a pestrosti, zvyšuje biodiverzitu krajiny a je určujícím znakem krajinného rázu. Během posledních 60 let došlo k velkým změnám ve struktuře a rozšíření rozptýlené zeleně v krajině. Zatímco v minulosti byly dřeviny do volné krajiny cílevědomě vysazované v podobě alejí, remízků i solitérů, v období socialistického zemědělství byla tato vegetace v důsledku zcelování pozemků a intenzifikace zemědělství naopak likvidovaná, protože byla vnímaná jako překážka souvislého obdělávání zejména orné půdy. Potvrzují to i výsledky této studie, realizované na příkladu intenzivně využívané zemědělské krajiny ve středních Čechách. Zájmové území leží v povodí dolních toků Doubravy a Klejnárky a zaujímá přes 60 km2. Porovnáním současného stavu se stavem v roce 1950 bylo zjištěno, že v tomto území se snížilo zastoupení rozptýlené zeleně ve všech kategoriích (bodové, liniové a plošné prvky). Plocha bodových prvků se snížila o 17,5 %, plošných o 6,5 % a liniových o 4 %. Jako statisticky významné byly vyhodnoceny změny v případe liniové a plošné vegetace. Po napřímení vodních toků zmizely z krajiny zbytky břehových porostů bývalých říčních meandrů, vlivem kolektivizace zmizely liniové vegetační prvky na hranicích pozemků. Tato ztráta byla částečně nahrazená nově vysazovanými stromořadími podél cest nebo nesouvislými porosty na březích upravených vodních toků a umělých melioračních kanálů. V krajině se zachovaly některé vegetační struktury vázané na význačné artefakty, které můžeme označit jako historické krajinné struktury. Příkladem jsou liniové porosty dřevin na hrázích bývalých rybníků, podél starých cest nebo skupiny či solitéry dřevin vázané na místní krajinné dominanty jako jsou kříže, boží muka apod. Rozšíření, struktura a hustota prvků rozptýlené zeleně v krajině závisí jednak na přírodních podmínkách (primární krajinná struktura), dále na způsobu využívání krajiny (sekundární krajinná struktura) a konečně také na legislativních limitech a stupni ochrany daného území (terciérní krajinná struktura). Studie potvrdila, že nejvyšší zastoupení prvků rozptýlené vegetace je v biochorách údolních niv a v charakteristických prostorech krajinného rázu vymezených v údolních nivách Labe a dolní Doubravy. Potvrdilo se, že v krajinné památkové zóně Žehušicko, vyhlášené na ochranu kulturní krajiny s významnými stopami starých krajinářských úprav je vyšší zastoupení prvků rozptýlené zeleně než v okolní nechráněné krajině mimo krajinnou památkovou zónu. Za posledních 60 let došlo nejen ke snížení rozsahu (hustoty) rozptýlené zeleně v krajině, ale také ke změně jejího významu a funkce. V minulosti byla využívaná k účelům, které jsou dnes převážně nevýznamné a druhořadé (zdroj dřeva, případně květů nebo jiných částí rostlinné biomasy, sběr ovoce, vyznačení hranic pozemků apod.). V současnosti převládá její funkce estetická, krajinotvorná. Úbytek rozptýlené zeleně ve volné krajině je částečně kompenzován současným šířením nelesní dřevinné vegetace v krajině procesem sukcese na opuštěných a nevyužívaných plochách.

This paper aims to reveal and explain the role of metro stations in a post-socialist metropolis as nodes that determine the perception of the city. By means of Lynch-type mental maps, we sought to find whether metro stations really function as perceptual nodes concentrating urban functions and traffic, and how recent changes of urban built environment and functions induced by neoliberal policy are reflected in the public perception. The results are discussed in relation to transit-oriented development that considers public transport stations and spaces around them as community hubs. The study has confirmed the expectation that the metro system constitutes an important part of the urban image and often functions as a skeleton that is used to arrange and frame the mental map of the city. Most of the metro stations function as perceptual nodes concentrating a particular urban function (monofunctional nodes) or combination of different functions (multifunctional nodes). The current perception of nodal areas around the metro stations reflects the recent transformation of urban built environment and functions, including intense and sometimes aggressive commercialization, as well as deindustrialization, although the role of open green public spaces and waterfronts continues to be important. To promote economic development and produce a more comfortable living environment, the metro-related nodal areas need to balance different functions, resisting abusive commercialization and promoting, keeping, and creating open public spaces, green areas and heritage protections.

This paper presents the results of an empirical economic data-based survey of the costs and revenues of geographical data and Web services across public administration in Czechia. The survey was composed of questionnaires and interviews. The data was collected from the 19 biggest public producers of geographical information and 25 organizations that use geographical information. The results focus on the economic consequences of data opening, splitting finances within public administration bodies, the prioritization of activities related to geographical information, licensing issues and life cycle planning etc. We also consider user opinions on the restrictions on the (re)use of geographical information of public administration, including open data.

This paper aims to reveal and explain the spatial pattern of Facebook adoption in Western Ukraine. It discusses how to trace the fragmented nature of social networking services’ (SNS) penetration at the intra-regional level using Facebook data analysis. This study has confirmed the expectation that in Western Ukraine Facebook adoption is predominantly an urban phenomenon, but with some peculiarities depending on the local context. The largest cities and regional centers attract the highest number of users, while peripheral and the economically least developed places have the lowest Facebook penetration rate. However, there are some areas with a higher number of Facebook adopters caused by a specific rural settlement system and the location in the Carpathians with no large cities ‘pulling’ the audience. The spatial pattern of Facebook adoption in Western Ukraine is an intricate and intertwined mosaic of ‘SNS hubs’ and peripheries, suggesting a ‘digital differentiation’ rather than a ‘digital divide’.

In this paper, the author assesses and explains changes in ethnic composition that occurred in the postcommunist countries of Europe and the Caucasus during the 1990s. Quantitative as well as qualitative aspects of ethno-demographic changes are emphasized. Points of departure are the censuses of 1989/1992 and 1999/2004, and alternatively, the estimates of international organizations. Assessment is carried out at the state and regional levels. The current ethnic composition of post-communist Europe is the result of three ethnic processes. Homogenization concerns those states with a lower initial degree of ethnic homogeneity. Polarization (the formation of two or more ethnically dissimilar entities within one state) was also a prevalent outcome. Those processes were more powerful in war-stricken areas due to forced migrations and ethnic cleansing. Natural increase, governmental ethnic policies and the social atmosphere played an important role in the establishment of peaceful conditions. Conversely, countries that are ethnically homogeneous to a high degree recorded a decrease in their level of ethnic homogeneity. This was caused not only by immigration, but also by subjective factors. Etnické procesy v postkomunistické Evropě v 90. letech 20. století Článek hodnotí a vysvětluje proměny etnické struktury, jež proběhly v evropských a kavkazských postkomunistických zemích během 90. let 20. století. Důraz je kladen nejen na kvantitativní, nýbrž i na kvalitativní stránku etnodemografických proměn. Jde tedy o zhodnocení chování majority a minorit a vztahu mezi nimi, jenž byl ovlivněn rozmachem nacionalismu a separatismu. Výchozí datovou základnou jsou sčítání lidu 1989/1992 a 1999/2004, při jejich absenci pak odhady mezinárodních organizací. Hodnocení bylo prováděno na úrovni států a regionů, a to jak pomocí speciálně zkonstruovaných indexů, tak i korelace. Současná etnická struktura postkomunistické Evropy je výsledkem tří etnických procesů – etnické homogenizace, polarizace i heterogenizace. Homogenizace se týkala států s nižší výchozí úrovní etnické homogenity. Hojným výsledkem byla také u řady zemí jejich etnická polarizace, tj. v rámci jednoho státu zformování dvou a více etnicky odlišných homogenních jednotek. Tyto procesy byly rychlejší ve válkou zasažených územích, a to díky násilným přesunům obyvatelstva a užívání etnického čištění. V mírových podmínkách pak důležitou roli hrají přirozený přírůstek, vládní politika ve vztahu k menšinám a atmosféra ve společnosti. Naopak v etnicky vysoce homogenních zemích došlo během 90. let 20. století k poklesu etnické homogenity, tj. k heterogenizaci. Příčinou byla jednak imigrace, nemalou úlohu hráli také subjektivní činitelé (proměna etnické identifikace). Etnické konflikty jsou zejména doménou periferie, neboť historická jádra států jsou etnicky vysoce homogenní. Rychlejší etnická homogenizace periferie ve prospěch státního národa však nebyla pravidlem. K rozličným etnickým procesům docházelo také v jádrových oblastech. Při hodnocení etnických procesů v rámci dichotomie jádro–periferie tedy nelze hovořit o jasných pravidelnostech.

Primarily, the objective of this paper is to assess the basic infrastructure like the existence of water, electricity, and gas mains and the sewage in Roma settlements. A comparatively lower dwelling level has been observed above all in segregated Roma settlements. Five categories of Roma settlements have been classified by using of the point method. Comparison of infrastructure available to the majority in concerned municipalities is important and illustrative for the exclusion of the Roma population. Roma settlements seem to be marginalized and it is precisely where the exclusion is obvious not only in terms of the dwelling level but also in terms of working opportunities, education and health care.

Tropical deforestation is one of the world’s most pressing environmental issues. Some theorists, building on agricultural economist Esther Boserup’s work, propose that agricultural intensification through population growth curbs deforestation through limiting extensive forest cutting for agricultural purposes. Although various scholars have studied the drivers of tropical deforestation, few have examined the determinants of agricultural intensification, which plays key role in forest conservation. This paper uses household data collected in the Maya Biosphere Reserve, Guatemala, to uncover predictor variables associated with intensification in farmed plots. Maize productivity is statistically and positively related with several key variables including smaller farms, and a small percentage of overall land area in crops; the latter households dedicate more of their output to market sales instead of subsistence. These results challenge the applicability of Boserup’s theory to the tropical agricultural frontier but is consistent with theories of land and labor maximization.

The aim of the paper is a characterisation of shopping centres in the Warsaw Metropolitan Area. Types, distribution, and functions of the centres have been analysed. Next, the results of surveys conducted among residents of the capital city and concerning purposes and frequency of visits to the centres are presented. The Warsaw Metropolitan Area (WMA) has been chosen for the study because it is the area with the greatest saturation with shopping centres in Poland. Nákupní centra v metropolitní oblasti Varšava Příspěvek se věnuje charakteristice nákupních center ve Varšavě. Analyzovány jsou typy, distribuce a funkce jednotlivých center. Prezentovány jsou výsledky průzkumů mezi obyvateli hlavního města se zaměřením na smysl a frekvenci návštěvnosti center. Metropolitní oblast Varšava (WMA) byla vybrána z důvodu největší saturace nákupních středisek v Polsku.

The aim of the paper is to introduce approach of landscape functioning assessment based on the relationship of three land cover types (forest, bare ground, non-forest vegetation) and radiation temperature that is regarded as an indicator and way how the solar energy is dissipated within landscape. Land cover assessment of trans-boundary model area (Northern Bohemia and Saxony) was based on multispectral classification of Landsat TM data. Radiation temperature, qualified in relative scale was derived from the same sensor from thermal band TM6. The interpretation of processed satellite images results from theoretical background of Energy-transport-reaction model. The results demonstrate that temperature is distributed across landscape depending on the type and structure of land cover. Unless damaged, forest ecosystems are able to maintain lower temperatures and produce condensation places. By contrast, non-forest vegetation tends to fall into the category of low dissipation ability and higher temperature. More positive trends are visible in some types of permanent grass vegetation, especially wet meadows. Bare surfaces, by contrast, contribute to high temperatures, release heat and contribute to landscape warming. Hodnocení funkcí krajiny založené na rozložení radiační teploty Článek pojednává o vztahu krajinného pokryvu k radiační teplotě, kterou lze považovat za ukazatel způsobu disipace sluneční energie v krajině. Pro hodnocení fungování krajiny byla využita multispektrální družicová data Landsat TM, informace o radiační teplotě byly odvozeny z termálního kanálu TM6, a to v relativní škále. Jako modelové území byl zvolen přeshraniční region severních Čech a Saska. Diskutován je vztah disipace sluneční energie k radiační teplotě, její význam pro fungování krajiny. Vlastní interpretace teplotních snímků je založena na teoretickém základu, vycházející z Energy-transport-reaction modelu (Ripl 1995). Podle změn radiační teploty lze hodnotit změny fungování krajiny, a to nejen ve vybraném devítiletém časovém horizontu, ale rovněž v různých fázích vegetačního období. Informace o krajinném pokryvu byly získány z multispektrálních dat Landsat TM metodami řízené klasifikace (Maximum Likelihood, Fisher Linear Likelihood a ECHO klasifikátor). Byly vymezeny čtyři základní kategorie krajinného pokryvu – vodní plochy, les, nelesní vegetace a holé povrchy. Možnosti rozdělení do dalších subkategorií byly limitovány termínem pořízení snímků – detailnější klasifikační schéma lze většinou extrahovat ze snímků z pozdní fáze vegetačního období. Případná diferenciace nelesní vegetace na ornou půdu (zemědělské plodiny) a trvalé travní porosty, byla provedena na základě paralelně vizualizované RGB syntézy kanálů TM 4-5-3. Problém představoval především červencový termín 1995. V tomto období je poměrně těžké, díky téměř totožným spektrálním příznakům, odlišit některé druhy nelesní vegetace od listnatých lesních porostů. Mapy relativní radiační teploty zájmového území pro jednotlivé termíny byly vytvořeny z kumulovaného histogramu hodnot termálního kanálu TM6 ekviareální metodou. Bylo vymezeno pět teplotních tříd (každá obsahující cca 20 % pixelů), s označením plochy nejchladnější – chladné – středně teplé – teplé – nejteplejší. Při použití této metody je však nezbytné brát v úvahu, že takto definované a vypočtené třídy relativní teploty, jsou vztažené pouze k vybranému zájmovému území a budou se tedy lišit podle jednotlivých případových studií. Z celkové teplotní mapy byla pod maskou vymezena teplota pro jednotlivé kategorie vegetačního pokryvu – les, nelesní vegetaci a holé povrchy. Mezitermínové hodnocení změn teploty bylo provedeno na základě krosklasifikační maticové analýzy (modul CROSSTAB v softwaru IDRISI 15.0). Lesní ekosystémy jsou kategorií krajinného pokryvu, s vysokou disipační schopností. Znamená to, že většina dopadajícího slunečního záření je transformována do latentní složky tepla, které nepřispívá k zvyšování teploty krajiny). Jsou typem porostu, který je schopen vyrovnávat teplotní výkyvy, zadržet vyšší obsah vlhkosti a tím zajišťovat efektivní disipaci sluneční energie. Pokud nejsou ovlivněny vláhovým stresem, jsou schopny udržovat nízkou teplotu krajiny a vytvářet kondenzační místa. Nelesní vegetaci lze řadit spíše do kategorie s nízkou disipační schopností. Ve většině případů se jedná o zemědělské, suchomilné plodiny, které trpí silným vláhovým stresem a nejsou schopny efektivní disipace. Intenzita evapotranspirace na těchto plochách je velmi nízká, dominuje vlastní tepelná složka, která přispívá k vysoké teplotě krajiny. Příznivějším chováním se vyznačují některé trvalé travní porosty, zvláště vlhké louky a mokřady. Holé povrchy víceméně přispívají k vysoké teplotě krajiny. Jak však ukazují satelitní data, pozitivní vliv na teplotní obraz může mít i malé množství mrtvé biomasy. Data DPZ (Landsat – především teplotní kanál TM6) a použité základní metody jejich zpracování prokázaly, že umožňují objektivní, poměrně rychle zjistitelnou diagnózu krajiny, jež nelze se stejnou podrobností, porovnatelností a přesností získat pozemním průzkumem. I přes určité limity, představují data dálkového průzkumu Země nepostradatelný nástroj v krajinné ekologii. Ačkoli by se mohlo zdát, že řešená problematika je obecně a logicky známá, neexistuje zatím mnoho prací (Foley et al. 2003, 2005; Ripl a Hildmann 2000; Ripl 2004; Pokorný a Šíma 2006; Šíma a Pokorný 2006), které by dokumentovaly význam kategorií krajinného pokryvu a heterogenitu krajinné struktury v návaznosti na teplotu a umožňovaly tak diagnostiku jejího fungování. Data dálkového průzkumu poskytují právě ony často chybějící údaje, podklady a důkazy pro tato tvrzení. To jak je daný problém vzrůstu teploty krajiny závažný, ilustruje obraz intenzivně využívaného regionu Mostecké pánve, Poohří i Polabí. V dnešní době jsou velmi diskutovaným tématem globální změny klimatu. Ve většině případů jsou tyto změny dávány zejména do souvislosti se zvyšováním množství skleníkových plynů v atmosféře, případně albedem povrchu (CRFEC 2005, IPCC 2007, DeFries et al. 2002, Randerso n et al. 2006, Bonan 2008). Většina přístupů však zcela opomíjí význam trvalé a funkční vegetace v krajině a procesy evapotranspirace. Člověk svou činností ovlivňuje své prostředí. Především intenzifikace zemědělství a urbanizace má značný podíl na narušení energomateriálových toků. Vlivem odvodnění a vysušení krajiny, odstraněním funkční a trvalé vegetace z krajiny (nejen kácení lesů, ale rovněž úbytek remízků, rozptýlené zeleně a preferencí suchomilných plodin – obilovin), dochází k přehřívání krajiny a její degradaci, způsobenou zrychleným odnosem živin. Příkladem nemusí být desertifikované aridní a semiaridní oblasti, ale jak vyplývá z výsledků hodnocení i intenzivně využívaná oblast Polabí a Poohří. Podle prokázaných výsledků, lze navracením trvalé a funkční vegetace do krajiny, a to již na lokální úrovni, příznivě ovlivňovat teplotu a s tím spojený malý oběh vody a následně ovlivnit i klima na úrovni globální. Růst teploty v krajině by mohl být daleko účinněji kontrolován přes vodní cyklus a zapojením funkční vegetace. Větší teplotní amplitudy mají za následek růst turbulentního proudění, snížení evapotranspirace a poškozování vegetace, zvýšený odnos látek. Obnova základních ekologických funkcí, jakými je právě způsob disipace slunečního záření přes vodní cyklus, je proto možným aktivním obranným krokem proti klimatickým změnám.

Europe and the United States are very different as far as the significance of religion is concerned, both in the private and the public sphere. Whereas autochthon Europe is secularising to a great extent and any growth of religiousness is mainly a matter of immigrants, the United States is the scene of a vivid market of numerous churches, congregations and sects culminating in a high rate of people that belong to a church or religious community and that believe in God. The aim of this paper is to explain this gap between Europe and the United States on the basis of social science theory and theoretical insights derived from (historical) political and cultural geography. It is argued that a different kind of historical political territorialisation (from below in the US versus from above in Europe) in combination with culturally selective settlement (US) is at the centre of the explanation. Sekularizace a nárůst významu náboženství přistěhovalců: případ Nizozemska Pro celosvětový vývoj je charakteristický nárůst významu religií (Berger et al. 1999; Norris & Inglehart 2004), ale v rámci Evropy se jedná spíše o výjimku. Žádný jiný světadíl není v současné době v takovém pokročilém stavu sekularizace a přitom právě Evropa vybudovala v minulosti mnoho nádherných náboženských staveb (katedrály, kostely atd.) a je odpovědná také za rozšíření křesťanství do celého světa. V rámci Evropy patří Nizozemsko k nejvíce sekularizovaným státům. Podle současných výzkumů 61–66 % obyvatel Nizozemska se nehlásí k žádné církvi nebo náboženské komunitě a pouze 16 procent obyvatel navštěvuje církve k pravidelným modlitbám (např. Bernts et al. 2007). Křesťané se stali menšinou s podílem méně než jedné třetiny obyvatel a k tomu ještě okolo 6–7 procent populace se hlásí k nekřesťanským náboženstvím (islám, hinduismus, buddhismus a judaismus). Cílem studie bylo analyzovat dvě kontrastní tendence. Za prvé stanovit přehled současného vývoje procesu sekularizace včetně vybraných metodologických reflexí a za druhé popsat nárůst významu nových náboženských komunit v Nizozemsku se zvláštním zřetelem na islám. Jako modelové území přitom posloužilo město Amsterdam.

The Carpatho‑Pannonian Area is both religiously and ethnically the most diverse region of the present‑day Europe. This area has to be considered the scene of competition between Western and Eastern Christianity since the 9th century. The religious spatial structure closely connected with the natural and social environment, mainly with the ethnic structure, with the traditional life style of the population, with the ‘soul of the people’ was radically changed during the last century. In the second half of 20th century an abrupt change occurred in the state-church relations, when secularisation accelerated during the atheistic, anticlerical communist period. Following the collapse of the communist regime a trend of slowing down secularisation and considerable religious revival has been observed. This paper attempts to outline the main changes and the present state of the religious structure during the last century. Změny religiózní struktury obyvatelstva a sekularizace v karpatsko‑panonském regionu během 20. století Karpatsko‑panonský region je v současné Evropě nábožensky i etnicky jednou z nejvíce diverzifikovaných oblastí. Toto území bylo utvořeno během soutěžení východního a západního křesťanství v 9. století. Plošné rozmístění náboženských struktur bylo úzce spojeno s přírodním a sociálním prostředím, tedy hlavně s etnickou strukturou, tradičním způsobem života, resp. „duší obyvatel“. Ve 20. století však došlo k radikálním změnám. Druhá polovina 20. století se vyznačovala rychlými změnami vztahu státu a církve, když proces sekularizace byl ještě více urychlen v ateistickém a anticírkevním komunistickém období. Po zhroucení komunistických režimů došlo ke zpomalení trendu sekularizace a částečně také k náboženské obnově společnosti. Tato studie se pokouší zjistit hlavní změny religiózních struktur současných států ve 20. století na karpatsko‑panonském území.

The paper has attempted to generalize changes in the geographic distribution of religious heterogeneity or homogeneity in Czechia during the transformation period from 1991 to 2001. Areas with a higher degree of religious homogeneity exhibit smaller declines in the level of homogeneity when compared with regions with a higher level of religious heterogeneity, which also exhibit greater declines in homogeneity or greater increases in spatial religious heterogeneity. In this way, the regional differentiation of Czechia’s religious landscape is becoming more pronounced. Změny geografického rozmístění náboženské heterogenity v Česku v období transformace Předložená studie se pokusila zobecnit změny geografického rozmístění náboženské heterogenity, resp. homogenity v Česku v období transformace za roky 1991 až 2001. Nárůstu náboženské heterogenity jako faktoru, který pak může přispět ke zmírnění procesu sekularizace se zatím nepotvrdil. Výjimkou je pouze hlavní město Praha, kde k tomuto zmírnění došlo, ale jinak nárůst sekularizace v území vede i k nárůstu heterogenity náboženské krajiny a naopak. Území s vyšší mírou náboženské homogenity zaznamenávají nižší pokles míry homogenity oproti regionům s vyšší mírou religiózní heterogenity, které pak vykazují i vyšší pokles homogenity, resp. vyšší nárůst náboženské heterogenity v prostoru. Dochází tak k nárůstu regionální diferenciace religiózní krajiny v Česku. Nárůst heterogenity na úrovni Česka byl potvrzen i díky nárůstu registrovaných církví po roce 1989, kdy bylo zaregistrováno 13 nových církví či náboženských společností. Oblasti s vyšší religiozitou pak představují většinou regiony i s vyšší mírou homogenity a naopak. Výjimku zde představuje pouze ostravská aglomerace. V Česku obecně dochází ke koncentrickým tendencím věřících a to především díky Římskokatolické církvi jako největší náboženské komunitě v Česku, která tento trend naplňuje. Naopak expanze menších především evangelikálních církví (Církev bratrská, adventisté, Křesťanské sbory atd.) pak způsobuje nárůst regionální heterogenity religiózní krajiny v Česku.

The results of geomorphological research into the Sazava river terraces are presented. This terrace system is characteristic by its variable structure which is conditioned by specific hydrodynamic processes that existed during the late Cenozoic evolution of the river valley. Two levels of Neogene fluvial sediments and seven Quaternary terrace accumulations along the Sazava course are distinguished. In the paper is also established their chronostratigraphical relation to the Vltava-Labe terrace systems. Morfostratigrafie teras řeky Sázavy v Českém masivu V práci jsou předloženy výsledky geomorfologického výzkumu říčních teras Sázavy. Tento terasový systém má velmi rozmanitou strukturu, která vznikala postupně působením specifických hydrodynamických procesů při vývoji údolí Sázavy v mladším kenozoiku. V údolí Sázavy byly zjištěny dvě úrovně neogenních říčních sedimentů a sedm stupňů terasových akumulací kvartérního stáří. Dnešní údolní dno střední části toku Sázavy leží vzhledem k nivě Vltavy ve zřetelně visuté poloze a na současnou úroveň bylo vyhloubeno převážně v době vzniku VI. terasy. Ve studii je také provedena chronostratigrafická korelace říčních teras Sázavy s terasami Vltavy a Labe. Podle aktuálního stratigrafického schématu kvartéru odpovídá celý systém teras Sázavy převážně období komplexu cromer po weichsel. Erozní fáze před akumulací I. terasy náleží v údolí Sázavy do závěru starého pleistocénu.

In a religiously very heterogeneous country where the Communist state was quite successful to impose secularization, the wars in the context of the dissolution of Yugoslavia which were mainly nationalist but implicitly had religious aspects led to a strengthening of the role of the religious institutions in all successor states. Therefore, for the time after 1990 we can speak of a resurgence of religion in all states of Ex‑Yugoslavia. On the level of the individual, the situation can be best described with the term of “confrontational identity”: Religious, together with national or ethnic awareness came to be of great or even prime importance in the confrontation with “other” ethnicities, nations and religions. The religious resurgence manifests itself a stronger identification of people with their religious roots rather than in increased active church involvement. Special emphasis is put on the role of the Serbian Orthodox Church which is closely linked to the culture, history and politics of the Serbian nation and regards itself its “cultural guardian” (Ramet). In this context, the Orthodox concept of the “canonical territory” is crucial and will be explored in the paper. Náboženství a církevní instituce ve státech bývalé Jugoslávie mezi sekularizací a obnovou V nábožensky heterogenním státě vnutil komunistický režim poměrně úspěšně proces sekularizace, ovšem válečné konflikty, které doprovázely rozdělení Jugoslávie, byly často založeny na nacionalismu, který byl často spojen i veden náboženským vyznáním a církevními institucemi daného nástupnického státu. V individuální rovině lze tuto situaci nejlépe popsat termínem „konfrontační identita“. Religiózní, společně s národním a etnickým uvědoměním hrály nejvýznamnější roli v konfrontaci s „jinými“ etniky, národy a náboženstvím. Náboženská obnova se osvědčila jako silná identifikace obyvatel s náboženskými kořeny a díky tomu stoupl také aktivní zájem o církve. Zvláštní důraz byl kladen na roli Srbské pravoslavné církve, která je úzce spjata s kulturou, historií a politikou srbského národa a je vyzdvihována jako jeho „kulturní strážce“ (Ramet). V tomto kontextu se jeví koncept pravoslaví ohledně „kanonického území“ jako zcela zásadní a byl proto také analyzován v předkládané studii.

This paper concentrates on monitoring and the evaluation of the restored Sviňovicky brook channel. Main attention is paid to fluvial dynamics of the new channel. Repeated measurement of the cross-section and longitudinal profiles of the channel in connection with the rainfall and run-off events which have occurred can be considered as the basic method. In addition experimental photogrammetric methods have been applied using aerial images of the area taken from low-flying model planes. So far the largest changes to the revitalized channel occurred during the floods in July 2006. The flood caused changes in depth reaching more than 30 cm and in width reaching up to 1 metre, thus creating new conditions for further development of the channel. Changes in the course of the monitored channel in the historical period between 1843 and 2005 have been studied separately based on an analysis of the maps and aerial images. In connection with this research, selected methods of ecohydrological monitoring have been applied: surface water quality monitoring based on the hydrochemical parameters and also assessment of hydromorphological structures of the river habitat quality. Fluviální dynamika a vybrané metody ekohydrologického monitorování koryta revitalizovaného Sviňovického potoka Příspěvek je zaměřen na monitoring a hodnocení zrevitalizovaného Sviňovického potoka u obce Zbytiny v povodí horní Blanice. Hlavní pozornost byla věnována dynamice fluviálně-morfologického vývoje nového koryta. Je založena na opakovaných geodetických zaměřováních příčných a podélných profilů v pravidelných půlročních intervalech ve vztahu k proběhlým významným srážko-odtokovým epizodám. Vedle geodetických metod byly v území aplikovány fotogrammetrické metody s využitím nasnímkování území z nízkoletících modelů. Rozvolněné koryto vykazovalo od provedené revitalizace poměrně velkou dynamiku spočívající v mírném až středním zahlubování koryta, provázeném podemíláním svahů a rozšiřováním koryta v místě zákrutů. K prozatím největší modelaci revitalizovaného koryta došlo při povodni v červenci 2006, která vyvolala na malém toku hloubkové změny v rozmezí více než 30 cm a šířkové změny až 1 m a vytvořila nové podmínky pro další vývoj koryta. I přes relativně stabilizovaný stav koryta a různý stupeň zpevnění břehů a dna vegetací se rozhodl vlastník toku, správa ZVHS Prachatice, zasáhnout do přirozeného vývoje zrevitalizovaného koryta. Ke konci kalendářního roku 2007 byl proveden závoz lomového kamene k největším nátržím v úseku toku nad silničním mostem. Dolní úsek toku byl prozatím ponechán přirozenému vývoji. Samostatná pozornost byla věnována změnám trasy sledovaného koryta v historické době v období 1843–2005 na základě analýzy mapových podkladů a leteckých snímků. Analýzou byly zjištěny poměrně razantní, v dnešní době již nenávratné změny trasy sledovaného koryta spojené s melioračními úpravami v 70.–80. letech minulého století. V návaznosti na fluviálně-morfologický průzkum byl prováděn průzkum kvality vody na základě základních hydrochemických ukazatelů a dále hodnocení ekohydromorfologických struktur kvality habitatu vodního toku. Provedený monitoring potvrdil nízkou míru znečištění revitalizovaného úseku Sviňovického potoka. Nejvyšší koncentrace byly zaznamenány u parametrů CHKSMn (III. třída jakosti), konduktivita a dusičnanový dusík (II. třída jakosti). Zdrojem těchto látek jsou rozptýlené a plošné zdroje znečištění. Jejich snížení by napomohlo komplexnější pojetí revitalizace jak v podélném, tak příčném profilu včetně vytvoření funkčních doprovodných vegetačních pásů s optimální skladbou dřevin a keřů, vyřešení vyústění drenážních výpustí a eliminace chovu skotu v bezprostřední blízkosti toku. Dostatečně široké a funkční doprovodné vegetační pásy by znamenaly rovněž zlepšení celkového ekohydromorfologického stavu koryta vodního toku. Mapování ekohydromorfologického stavu bylo provedeno na revitalizovaném úseku v celkové délce 720 m a dále bylo provedeno mapování upraveného úseku na horním toku Sviňovického potoka v délce 280 m. Při terénním průzkumu byly mapovány charakteristiky koryta toku, doprovodných vegetačních pásů a údolní nivy. Z pohledu studia přirozeného hydromorfologického vývoje revitalizovaného koryta je škoda, že došlo v několika úsecích nad silnicí k opevnění břehů kamenným pohozem. Do přirozeného procesu formování koryta tedy opět zasáhl antropogenní faktor.

This paper aims to the evaluation of the assessment of topographic potential for erosion and deposition when the contour lines from the Czech Fundamental Base of Geographic Data (ZABAGED) are used. On a hill slope above the Opava River a DEM from field measurements and a DEM from contours were created. The potential for erosion and deposition was computed on the both DEMs and the results were compared. We considered the result based on the DEM from field measurement as a reference. The potential for erosion and deposition based on the contour lines showed large inaccuracies in its spatial distribution. The main drawbacks of ZABAGED contour lines mentioned in literature proved to be significant in erosion and deposition modelling. Využitelnost vrstevnic v modelování eroze: případová studie o využití ZABAGED Tvar reliéfu podstatně ovlivňuje prostorové rozdělení vodní eroze a depozice půdního materiálu. Cílem článku je zhodnotit využitelnost vrstevnic Základní mapy (Zabaged) pro modelování topografického potenciálu eroze. V povodí Opavy byl vybrán modelový svah o velikosti 30 hektarů. Byly použity vrstevnice Zabaged, které byly převedeny na body dostatečně vystihující průběh vrstevnic. Totální stanicí bylo zaměřeno 449 bodů, které byly použity pro tvorbu referenčního modelu. Pro počítačové modelování se zpravidla používají gridové digitální modely terénu (DMT). Tvorba DMT spočívá v konverzi nepravidelně rozmístěných dat do pravidelné sítě. Pro tuto úlohu byla použita obecně uznávaná metoda RST (regularizovaný spline s tenzí). Její vstupní parametry byly optimalizovány a vytvořeny dva digitální modely terénu: i) z vrstevnic a ii) ze zaměřených bodů. Vzhledem k řádově vyšší přesnosti modelu ii) byl tento považován za referenční. Na obou DMT bylo modelováno prostorové rozdělení topografického potenciálu eroze a depozice. Jedná se o reliéfovou charakteristiku reprezentující změnu v transportní kapacitě ve směru toku. Tato charakteristika zahrnuje profilovou i tangenciální křivost reliéfu a tím, v porovnání s často používaným LS faktorem, lépe popisuje komplexitu reliéfu. Z porovnání prostorového rozdělení topografického potenciálu eroze a depozice na DMT z vrstevnic a referenčním DMT plyne, že topografický potenciál eroze a depozice modelovaný z vrstevnic dobře odpovídá referenčnímu modelu na prudkých svazích (kolem 15°), a to jak v jejich konvexních částech (vysoký potenciál eroze) tak i v konkávních (vysoký potenciál depozice). Naopak na svazích nižší sklonitosti (< 10°) a v oblasti úpadu ve střední části modelového území je potenciál eroze a depozice modelován z vrstevnic neuspokojivě. Je známo, že vrstevnice Zabaged nedostatečně vyjadřují malé zařízlé reliéfové tvary. Tato skutečnost se zřejmě negativně projevuje i při modelování eroze.

Germany is a highly innovative country with large regional differences, both in economic performance and innovation potential. This paper focuses on the knowledge production and technological specialization at the state level in Germany and how it affects the exports of individual states. We measured the technological specialization based on average relatedness between patent classes. We demonstrated that technological specialization increased between 1988–1992 and 1998–2002 in most German states, whereas between 2008 and 2012 it slightly declined or remained stable in all states except Saarland and Bremen. Highly innovative states, such as Bayern, as well as the least innovative Sachsen-Anhalt, belong among the most specialized states. Therefore, there is no obvious trend indicating that large specialization is related to higher innovativeness or vice versa. In accordance with other studies, we found that having a higher number of patent applications increases exports. This is especially valid at the state level. However, within the seven examined industrial categories, the relationship is weaker. Apart from patenting, we also estimated other R&D indicators such as Gross Domestic Expenditure on Research and Development (GERD), R&D personnel and technological specialization. Whilst the higher relative numbers of R&D personnel increase the volume of exports relative to regional GDP, in the case of GERD, the results were inconclusive. Furthermore, a higher technological specialization measured by average relatedness between patent classes negatively affects exports. This finding is surprising, and other measures of specialization in different regions should be tested to support it.

The integration of immigrants into Czech society is a key topic in the public debate as well as essentially a political issue. The most numerous groups, within a half-million migrant population, include Slovaks, Ukrainians, Vietnamese, and Russians. Such composition points out that Czechia is predominantly attractive to non-EU immigrants. This article focuses on the integration process of Russian immigrants into Czech society. Representing highly educated and financially well-secured migrants who come as entire families, the Russians are distinct from other Eastern European immigrants. However, various factors hinder their integration. The paper discusses the factors that shape symbolic and social boundaries in this integration process: (1) the development of Czech-Russian relationships that have been influenced by dramatic past events, (2) the representation of Russians in Czech media, (3) their specific socio-economic status, and (4) Czech immigration and integration policies. Negative experience, socio-economic inequalities, strict implementation of immigration policies towards third-country immigrants, and an unfavourable media discourse affect the attitudes of the majority toward the Russians and limit meaningful encounters.

The paper aims to analyse the attitudes towards immigration among Czech youth and their changes on two distinct surveys of young Czechs (aged 14–19) held in 2011 and 2016, the years before and after a period of a greatly increased inflow of migrants to the European Union. In these surveys, special focus was given to changes in attitudes and factors influencing attitudes in each year. The results show that there was not a big difference in attitudes between both samples. Nevertheless, looking closely at the results, we found two main differences. The first was higher polarisation of answers in survey from 2016 than from the one held in 2011. The second one was in factors influencing answers, mainly in the statement on having an immigrant among close friends.

The development patterns of both historical and contemporary demographic transitions are essential in understanding the outcomes of age structure changes among the countries. Existing literature analyzing demographic transition as a precursor to population ageing does not classify countries or regions worldwide by the scale and dynamics of those processes. The aim of this paper is to identify and describe the differentiation of quantum and tempo effects of changes taking place during the demographic transition through classification of sub-regions and selected countries worldwide. The results of this research, based on the historical vital statistics starting from as far as 1736 and future projections until 2100, feature how sub-regions and selected countries in the world are differentiated in terms of the scale and dynamics of the demographic transition process. The analysis reveals the fact that majority of sub-regions in the world tend(ed) to undergo long transitions lasting over 70 years, though contemporary demographic transitions demonstrate higher intensity and higher maximal rates of natural increase. African sub-regions are expected to experience relatively long processes of declining birth and death rates and estimated to complete their demographic transition in 90 years on average. The fastest processes, however, are observed in South America and Eastern Asia where some countries like China, for instance, completed their transitions in just 50 years. The scale and dynamics of demographic transition processes can serve as the ground for further research of challenges and development opportunities resulting from ageing societies during consequent post-transitional stages.

Military landscapes and battlefields are important part of cultural heritage and identity of society. As a part of common social memory, military landscape could be assessed as an associative landscape according UNESCO World Heritage Convention. Before nature and culture heritage could be treasured, it first had to be recognised. Therefore, the paper focuses on identification of historical and cultural values of military landscapes, especially battlefields. Different types of values are discussed and demonstrated on the model area of battlefield Austerlitz/Slavkov near Brno. The battle was held in 1805 and several cultural values are identified there. Identification of cultural historical values is based on detailed analysis of the old and present maps and land cover assessment, study and analysis of archival sources and grey literature and detailed terrain research. Generally, we distinguished several types of values: elements forming the setting of the battlefield; elements tied with the battle (i.e. features and objects that served for purposes of the battle during the fights and are preserved until today); elements created after the battle. Once the associative landscapes are allocated together with their associative patterns, certain values should be given to particular elements in order to secure heir protection. Then each planning activity within the site should be given a level of effect on the associative element. This simple matrix implemented in local planning development plans and policies could be a source for rational decision within the associative landscapes.

The article presents the functioning of traditional farming landscapes in Eastern Poland, using the example of Lubelskie Province. This peripheral region, situated on the border of the European Union, demonstrates how the development of tourism, food tourism in particular, based on local crops and regional foodstuffs, helps to protect and promote local heritage and, at the same time, gain additional financial resources for its inhabitants. With a view to the aims set in the paper, the authors investigated the perception of the Lublin Region’s image as regards the predominant features of the natural and socio-economic environment. Moreover, they analysed the recognisability of the regional products and dishes among people from outside the province, who have visited it for tourism purposes. The research material was collected during international and Polish tourism fairs held in five largest Polish cities. The researchers collected 493 questionnaires, 220 of which underwent a detailed analysis. The study shows that the leading functions of Lubelskie Province include agriculture and tourism. The particular form of tourism that should be developed in the region is food tourism and related products due to the natural features and landscape assets. The conclusions drawn from the respondents’ answers as well as the query of strategic documents and promotional campaigns allowed the researchers to outline further directions as regards using traditional farming landscapes with the aim of development of the region. It appears that centuries-old forms of farming and methods of food production, resulting from the region’s history and natural conditions, may determine recognisability, build a brand based on the place of origin concept, and influence the socio-economic situation of the area, preserving traditional landscapes at the same time.
