Malaria is considered as a major public health problem in southern areas of Iran. The goal of this study was to predict best ecological niches of three main malaria vectors of Iran: Anopheles stephensi , Anopheles culicifacies s.l. and Anopheles fluviatilis s.l. A databank was created which included all published data about Anopheles species of Iran from 1961 to 2015. The suitable environmental niches for the three above mentioned Anopheles species were predicted using maximum entropy model (MaxEnt). AUC (area under Roc curve) values were 0.943, 0.974 and 0.956 for An. stephensi , An. culicifacies s.l. and An. fluviatilis s.l respectively, which are considered as high potential power of model in the prediction of species niches. The biggest bioclimatic contributor for An. stephensi and An. fluviatilis s.l. was bio 15 (precipitation seasonality), 25.5% and 36.1% respectively, followed by bio 1 (annual mean temperature), 20.8% for An. stephensi and bio 4 (temperature seasonality) with 49.4% contribution for An. culicifacies s.l. This is the first step in the mapping of the country’s malaria vectors. Hence, future weather situation can change the dispersal maps of Anopheles . Iran is under elimination phase of malaria, so that such spatio-temporal studies are essential and could provide guideline for decision makers for IVM strategies in problematic areas. • Mosquito infections with Sindbis (SINV) and Chikungunya (CHIKV) viruses in the northwest of Iran were examined. • The presence of the SINV genome in Culex pipiens complex and Cx. theileri was confirmed. • No CHIKV infection cases were identified in the 149 examined mosquito pools. • North, northwest, south, and southeast of Iran are the probable ecological niches of SINV vectors. Sindbis virus (SINV) and Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) are among the most widely spread mosquito-borne viruses worldwide. Due to the key role of mosquitoes in the transmission cycle of vector-borne diseases, models such as Maximum Entropy (MaxEnt) have been used in recent years to predict the environmental suitability and ecological niches of mosquito vectors. Infection of three mosquito species (Anopheles maculipennis s.l., Culex tritaeniorhynchus , and Culiseta longiareolata) with CHIKV has recently been reported in Iran. However, given the importance of vector-borne diseases in the country, there is a need for extensive studies on the infection of mosquitoes with CHIKV and SINV in different areas of the country. Accordingly, the current research was conducted to investigate the infection of mosquitoes with the two aforementioned viruses in the northwestern part of Iran and also to model the ecological niches of the vectors of these mosquito-borne viruses in the country. In the current study, 4639 mosquito specimens, consisting of 2515 adults and 2124 larvae, were collected from the wetlands of West Azerbaijan Province and identified. Ten species belonging to four genera were identified in this study. The specimens were allocated to 149 pools for the determination of infection with CHIKV and SINV. The amplification pattern of five pools comprising two mosquito species (Culex pipiens complex and Cx. Theileri) corresponded to the reference strain of SINV, and the isolates were sequenced to confirm the presence of SINV genome. No cases of CHIKV infection were found among the 149 examined mosquito pools. Data on the distribution of Cx. Pipiens complex and Cx. Theileri were mapped using ArcMap 10.5. Prediction maps of the presence probability for these species revealed that they are most likely to be found in and spread to the north, northwest, south, and southeastern areas of the country and in areas with abundant water resources. For the first time in Iran, our study investigated the presence probability of SINV vectors using ecological niche modeling. Ecological niche profiling showed that the most suitable habitats for Cx. pipiens are mainly concentrated in the north and northwestern parts of the country, whereas Cx. theileri is mostly located in the northwest and western regions. However, there were some other areas of low suitability for these two species in the country. Further studies in a broader geographical area with more species of mosquitos and the determination of infection with other mosquito-borne viruses can provide a clear understanding of the potential spread of mosquito-borne diseases in various regions of Iran. Leishmaniasis is an important infectious disease in Iran. Rudbar County of Guilan Province is introduced as a new focus of cutaneous leishmaniasis. The present study is going to investigate the sand flies fauna in the province and their seasonality and ecology in Rudbar County. To study the sand flies fauna, the sampling was carried out in ten localities of Guilan Province using light traps, sticky traps and manual aspirators during 2016. For the determination of seasonality, the sampling was carried out every two weeks in the fixed site of Pareh Village of Rudbar County during April–October 2016. Sand Flies were removed from sticky traps, rinsed in acetone and then conserved in 80% ethanol as well as the samples of light traps and hand catch. In total, 4430 specimens of sand flies of the genera Phlebotomus and Sergentomyia were collected and identified including Ph. kandelakii, Ph. neglectus, Ph. perfiliewi, Ph. sergenti, Ph. tobbi and Se. dentata. Sergentomyia dentata was found for the first time in Guilan Province. The most prevalent species were Ph. tobbi (55.87%), Ph. perfiliewi (36.03%) and Ph. kandelakii (6. 97%). The seasonality of sand flies started in late May and ended in middle October in the fixed site. The peak of activity of Ph. kandelakii was in late June; however that was in late August for Ph. perfiliewi and Ph. tobbi. The monthly abundance of total sand flies was positively correlated with saturation deficit (P = 0.043). The abundance of Ph. perfiliewi was positively correlated with maximum temperature (P = 0.016), relative humidity (P = 0.006), rainfall (P = 0.007), saturation deficit (P = 0.003) and negatively with minimum temperature (P = 0.005). The abundance of Ph. tobbi was positively correlated with saturation deficit (P = 0.041) and negatively with minimum temperature (P = 0.043). The presence of suspected vectors of cutaneous and visceral leishmaniasis, Ph. kandelakii, Ph. neglectus, Ph. perfiliewi, Ph. sergenti and Ph. tobbi , is noteworthy. Finding the exact vectors of leishmaniasis using specific tests in the province is suggested. The seasonality of sand flies starts in May and ends in October. Zoonotic Cutaneous Leishmaniasis (ZCL) is one of the endemic diseases in central part of Iran. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to find the areas with a higher risk of infection considering the distribution of vector, reservoir hosts and human infection. Passive data recorded the positive cases of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Yazd province health center were collected for 10 years, from 2007 to 2016 at the County level. Considering all earlier studies conducted in Yazd province, records of Phlebotomus papatasi , the main vector of ZCL, and Rhombomys opimus , the main reservoir of ZCL, were collected and entered in a database. ArcGIS and MaxEnt model were used to map and predict the best ecological niches for both vector and reservoir. The most cumulative incidence of the disease was found to be in Khatam County, south of Yazd province. The area under curve (AUC) for R. opimus and P. papatasi was 0.955 and 0.914, respectively. We found higher presence probability of both vector and reservoir in central and eastern parts of the province. The jackknife test indicated that temperature and normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) had the most effect on the model for the vector and reservoir, respectively. The areas with higher presence probability for the reservoirs and vectors were considered having the higher potential for ZCL transmission. Zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis (ZCL), caused by Leishmania major, is a common zoonotic vector-borne disease in Iran. Close contact with infected reservoir hosts increases the probability of transmission of Leishmania parasite infections to susceptible humans. Four gerbil species (Rodentia: Gerbillidae) serve as the main reservoir hosts for ZCL in different endemic foci of Iran. These species include Rhombomys opimus , Meriones libycus, Meriones hurrianae and Tatera indica; while notable infection has been reported in Nesokia indica as well. The purpose of this study is to model the distribution of these reservoirs to identify the risk areas of ZCL. A data bank was developed including all published data during the period of 1970–2015. Maximum entropy model was used to find the most appropriate ecological niches for each species. The areas under curve obtained were 0.961, 0.927, 0.922, 0.997 and 0.899, instead of 1, for training test in R. opimus , M. libycus , T. indica , M. hurrianae and N. indica, respectively. The environmental variable with the highest gain when used in isolation was slope for R. opimus and N. indica , annual mean temperature for M. libycus, and seasonal precipitation for T. indica and M. hurrianae . Summation of presence probabilities for three main species, i.e., R. opimus , M. libycus and T. indica revealed favorable ecological niches in wide areas of 16 provinces. This is the first study to predict the distribution of ZCL reservoir hosts in Iran. Climatology and topography variables had high contributions toward the prediction of potential distribution of the main reservoir species; therefore, as climate changes, the models should be updated periodically with novel data, and the results should be used in disease-monitoring programs. • MaxEnt model was used to predict the high risk areas of fascioliasis using topographic and bioclimatic variables. • The most important predictor variables were included Precipitation of driest quarter, Precipitation of driest month, aspect and altitude. • Guilan province has a high risk of fascioliasis in livestock. The present study aimed to determine the number of cases of animal fascioliasis per district in the southern littoral of Caspian Sea and to model suitable ecological niches for Fasciola infection in the region. Stool samples (n = 2688) were collected from cattle and sheep in Guilan, Mazandaran and Golestan provinces. The samples were tested using flotation method, and the number of parasite eggs per gram (EPG) of feces was recorded for each sample. Occurrence-only data of Fasciola were collected from the field. A total of 96 points/locations were used to model the ecological niche of Fasciola in maximum entropy (MaxEnt) and geographical information system (GIS). The spatial layers were compiled from 23 bioclimatic and biophysical variables for modeling analysis. Jackknife analysis was used to determine the relative importance of all variables in the model. In the present study, the proportion of fascioliasis in both hosts was highest in Guilan province (sheep: 12.34%, cattle: 15.16%), followed by Mazandaran (sheep: 7.3%, cattle: 6.25%) and Golestan (sheep: 0%, cattle: 0.94%) provinces. The Area Under Curve (AUC) value of the model was 0.909, indicating a good predictive power of the model. Our modeling results indicate that four variables, which were markedly incorporated into the model, are the major predictors of the presence probability of Fasciola spp. in the region: Bio17 (Precipitation of driest quarter; 45.5%), Bio14 (Precipitation of driest month; 24.8%), aspect (9%), and altitude (7.2%). The data presented herein show expansion of the potential high-risk areas of fascioliasis in the northern part of Iran, located at the southern littoral of Caspian Sea, especially in Guilan province. However, the extent of the predicted risk zones varied between the different areas of the region and within provinces, such that at the present, many parts of Golestan province are less environmentally suitable for Fasciola distribution than other areas in the region. Ticks are important parasites because of their voracious blood-feeding activity, and being as vectors for various agents of diseases in both human and livestock. This study was conducted in a monthly schedule from October 2014 to December 2015, at 45 study sites in three regions bordering the Caspian Sea, according to the topography including hillside, plain and coastal areas in collecting ticks from the body of sheep. Alfa and Beta biodiversity indices were calculated and compared between the three areas under study. In this study, 1583 out of a total of 3904 inspected sheep (40.54%), were infested with ticks, and 2410 ticks were collected, out of which 36.5, 34.8 and 28.7% were related to the coastal, plain and hillside areas, respectively. The identified tick specimens belonged to 3 genera and 9 species including Hyalomma marginatum, Hyalomma anatulicum, Hyalomma asiaticum, Hyalomma excavatum, Rhipicephalus bursa, Rhipicephalus turanicus, Rhipicephalus sanguineus, Haemaphysalis parva and Haemaphysalis punctata . With regards to the seasonal variation, the highest and lowest tick infestation was recognized in spring and winter, respectively. Monthly activity of ticks on sheep revealed that Hy. marginatum exhibited two peaks of activity in June and July in the coastal and plain regions, but in the hillside area these peaks for Rh. turanicus occurred in August. Differences in species richness has been proved significantly in Margalef index in the study area (P < 0.05). It showed the varied number of species among sampling sites during the study period. In conclusion, substantial research in investigating ticks' population dynamics by calculating their biodiversity indices is necessary to show their interactions with the environment, as well as other species to establish the stability of their community. Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is the most important vector-borne disease in Iran. Qom Province is a very important area in the case of CL transmission, because of high traffic population from other parts of the country, or even other countries, as well as existence of confirmed foci of the disease. The aim of this study was to determine the ecology of sand flies in two different climates of this province and model the distribution of the main vector. Sand flies were collected monthly during April 2013–April 2014, at 22 urban/rural collection sites. Site selection was constrained by the geographical distribution of CL cases in recent years. Shannon–Weiner and Evenness indices were used to compare diversity in two studied climates. ArcGIS and MaxEnt were used to map and predict the appropriate ecological niches for sand flies. Totally, 5389 sand flies were collected and 12 species were identified. The most abundant species were Sergentomyia sintoni, P. papatasi , P. sergenti s.l. and Phlebotomus alexandri . Two peaks of activity were found in May and August in lowlands; while in mountainous areas they were observed in June and September. Species diversity in mountainous areas was found to be higher than in lowlands. The environmental variable with the highest gain in MaxEnt model was the monthly mean of (max temp–min temp). A big part of the lowland areas provides good ecological niches for P. papatasi and therefore higher transmission potential. Zoonotic Cutaneous Leishmaniasis (ZCL) is still a serious health problem in Iran. The objective of the study was to determine the differences in sand fly biodiversity in Shush (plain) and Khorramshahr (littoral) Counties, Khuzestan Province, southwest Iran. Sand flies were collected using sticky paper traps from urban, semi urban, agricultural and natural ecotypes. Alpha and beta diversity were calculated using Shannon–Weiner index and Jaccard's and Sorensen's coefficients, respectively. Synanthropic index was determined for the first time for Phlebotomus papatasi and Phlebotomus alexandri in different land use categories in Iran. Totally 11213 specimens, 68.47% in Shush and 31.53% in Khorramshahr, were collected. Eleven species of sand flies including, 2 of genus Phlebotomus and 9 of genus Sergentomyia were identified . Sergentomyia christophersi was found as a new record. Dominant species were P. papatasi and Sergentomyia sintoni . Shannon–Weiner index, richness and evenness in semi urban area of Shush County were more than other habitats. The analysis of α biodiversity showed that agricultural ecosystem of Khorramshahr County had the highest diversity due to maximal richness and diversity and also relatively high evenness. Comparison of similarity of the sand flies population composition between Shush and Khorramshahr indicated the maximum similarity between the urban area of Shush and the semi urban area of Khorramshahr ( S j = 75% and S s = 86%). Synanthropic index of P. papatasi and P. alexandri were calculated to be −83.34 and −91.18, respectively in Shush County. Estimated synanthropic indices for P. papatasi and P. alexandri in three habitats (natural, semi urban and urban) of Khorramshahr County were −69.84 and −85.89, in the same order. The factors for having high diversity of sand flies in the plain area studied may be due to higher annual precipitation, the related land use and land cover.
