Abstract

A detailed comparative study of the sub-barrier fusion of the two nearby systems 36S+50Ti,51V was performed at the National Laboratories of Legnaro (INFN). The experiment aimed to evidence possible effects of the non-zero spin of the ground state of the 51V nucleus on the sub-barrier excitation function and on the shape of the barrier distribution. The comparison of both excitation functions and barrier distributions showed a very similar behavior, down to the level of 20–30 μb. Coupled-channels calculations have been performed including the low-energy excitations of both projectile and the two targets, and the results are in very good agreement with the data. This indicates that the low-lying levels in 51V can be interpreted in the weak-coupling scheme and that the extra proton in the f7/2 shell does not have a significant influence on sub-barrier fusion. Abstract

An experiment was performed at LNL to obtain information concerning the yield distributions in both the 132Sn (N = 82) and the 208Pb (N = 126) regions of the nuclide chart. The experimental set-up was composed of the large-acceptance magnetic spectrometer PRISMA to detect the light partner of the reaction, in conjunction with a recently installed ancillary set-up to detect the heavy partner. Abstract

The main idea of the two presented experiments is to study the decay of resonances in 24Mg at excitation energies above the 12C+12C decay threshold, in the astrophysical energy region of interest. The measurement of the 12C(16O,α)24Mg* reaction was performed at INFN-LNS in Catania. Only the α+20Ne decay channel of 24Mg is presented here, because it was a motivation for conducting a new experiment, a study of the4He(20Ne,4He)20Ne reaction, performed at INFN-LNL in Legnaro. Abstract

The 40Ar + 208Pb multinucleon transfer reaction has been studied at Elab = 255 MeV with the large solid angle magnetic spectrometer PRISMA. Mass and charge yields, differential and total cross sections, total kinetic energy loss distributions of different channels were simultaneously measured. Angular distributions were measured in a wide angular range by matching different spectrometer angular settings. Absolute cross sections were obtained by careful evaluation of the spectrometer response function. These cross sections for different transfer channels allow the discussion of the role played by nucleon-nucleon correlations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The heavy ion reaction 22Ne+208Pb at 128 MeV beam energy has been studied using the PRISMA-CLARA experimental setup at Legnaro National Laboratories. Aim of the experiment is the measurement of elastic, inelastic and one nucleon transfer cross sections. The data are presented in parallel with similar results for the unstable 24Ne nucleus, using existing data from the reaction 24Ne+208Pb at 182 MeV (measured at SPIRAL with the VAMOS-EXOGAM setup). A comparison with angular distributions obtained by semiclassical and DWBA predictions for the quadrupole deformation parameter is also discussed. In particular, the DWBA analysis allowed to determine the Β 2C charge deformation parameter both in 22Ne and 24Ne. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The large solid angle magnetic spectrometer PRISMA coupled to the γ array CLARA represents a significant step forward in the field of binary reactions at energies close to the Coulomb barrier. With this set-up extensive investigations have been carried out for nuclear structure and reaction dynamics. Via γ-particle coincidences it is now experimentally possible to measure the transfer strength to specific final states with high efficiency. In reactions with heavy ions, one can populate states of high angular momentum and, at the same, one can probe the population of specific nuclear levels via transfer of multiple pairs. Valuable information about the structure of those states can be then derived from the study of their decay modes. In the present paper aspects of these studies will be presented, focusing more closely on the reaction mechanism, in particular on the properties of quasielastic and deep-inelastic processes and on nucleon-nucleon correlations at energies far below the Coulomb barrier. We concentrated on (near) closed shell systems as they allow a better quantitative comparison between experiment and theory. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We present results from two recent runs which illustrate the performance of the PRISMA spectrometer in the proximity of the upper limit of its operational interval, namely 96Zr+124Sn at Elab = 500 MeV and 136Xe+208Pb at Elab = 930 MeV. In the latter run, the γ array CLARA also allowed us to identify previously unknown γ transitions in the nuclides 136Cs and 134I. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The lifetimes of the first excited states of the N = 30 isotones 50Ca and 51Sc and the Z = 18 isotopes 44-46Ar isotopes have been determined using a novel technique that combines the Recoil Distance Doppler Shift method with the CLARA-PRISMA spectrometers in multinucleon transfer reactions. The results allow determinination of the effective charges above 48Ca and test the strength of the N = 28 magic number when moving away from the stability line. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The CLARA-PRISMA setup consisting of the array of Euroball Clover detectors CLARA, coupled to the LNL large acceptance magnetic spectrometer PRISMA, has been successfully working since spring 2004. Recently, new developments such as the ancillary device DANTE and the use of the differential plunger technique has improved the capabilities of the setup. Results of experiments studying the structure of neutron-rich nuclei together with the preliminary results on the commissioning of the ancillary detector array DANTE and of the plunger technique will be presented.
