Aim: To assess the quality of counselling provided to mothers through the programme to prevent mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) of HIV in South Africa.Methods: Structured observations of consultations and exit interviews with 60 mothers attending clinics at three purposively selected PMTCT sites across South Africa were conducted.Results: Twenty-two counsellors were observed. The general quality of communication skills was very good, and 73% of HIV-negative mothers were informed of the advantages of exclusive breastfeeding (EBF). However, only one of 34 HIV-positive mothers was informed about the possible side effects of nevirapine, and none was told what to do when it occurred. Only two HIV-positive mothers were asked about essential conditions for safe formula feeding before a decision about an infant feeding option was made. None of the 12 mothers choosing to breastfeed was shown how to position the baby correctly on the breast or asked whether they thought EBF was feasible. Fewer than a quarter of mothers expressed confidence in performing the actions required, and 85% could not define the term EBF.Conclusion: The poor quality of counselling in the PMTCT programme will reduce the effectiveness of these programmes. Aims: To analyse mothers' self-assessed quality of interaction with their children and their opinions about child difficulty with respect to socio-economic status and subjective factors: postnatal depression, social isolation, sense of coherence and locus of control.Methods and Material: A comprehensive questionnaire was completed by 1039 mothers of 18-mo-old children participating in the baseline measurements of a Swedish multicentre study developing and testing a new psychosocial model for the child health services.Results: All subjective factors, including the number of factors, showed significant associations with perceived interaction and difficultness. Effect sizes of subjective factors ranged from about 0.3 to 1 SD for interaction, and from about 0.2 to 0.8 SD for difficultness. As for difficultness, effect sizes were larger for boys. There were no associations between high socio-economic status and high-quality interaction or low child difficultness: the few significant differences in fact favoured low-status children.Conclusion: The results provided some contradictory findings to the well-known association between high socio-economic status and favourable outcome. This result is of practical relevance for interventions: supportive programmes cannot be limited to areas and families of low socio-economic status. Aim: To determine if subjects' cholesterol levels tracked relative to their peers from early childhood to adult mid-life.Methods: Longitudinal study using subjects from the Busselton Population Study. Data were available from 1967 on a triennial basis until 1983, and a re-survey held in 1994. The study included 1764 subjects aged 5-18 y at first measurement. Pearson's correlation coefficient, adjusted for age and survey year, was used to examine cholesterol tracking. The proportion of children who persisted with cholesterol measurements in the extreme high quartile was assessed over time before and after adjusting data for regression to the mean. The variability of the children's cholesterol level was examined by track width using the method of Porkka.Results: The correlation coefficients for tracking were from 0.35 to 0.55. Stronger correlations coincided with shorter time periods between measurements. Before adjustment for regression to the mean, 55-60% of children from the highest quartile at first measurement remained in the same quartile 27 y later. After adjustment for regression to the mean, the number of children with levels in the extreme high quartile decreased, but 80% of these persisted in that quartile.Conclusion: Intra-individual variations in cholesterol levels have an important influence on population tracking levels and need to be considered when interpreting tracking results from early childhood to adult mid-life. Aim: To report updated rates of breastfeeding in Perth through 2002/3 and to compare them to those from 1992/3.Methods: Design: A 12-mo longitudinal study.Setting: Two public maternity hospitals in Perth, Australia.Subjects: Eligible mothers of healthy newborn infants delivered between mid-September 2002 and mid-July 2003.Interventions: All eligible mothers were asked to participate in a 12-mo longitudinal study of infant feeding. While in hospital, participating mothers completed a questionnaire that included questions on how they were feeding their newborn.Main Outcomes Measures: Prevalence of ever breastfeeding, and breastfeeding at discharge.Results: A total of 587 mothers, or 55% of those eligible, participated in the study. At hospital discharge, 93.8% of mothers in 2002/3 were breastfeeding compared with 83.8% in 1992/3. Significant increases were observed across all socio-demographic groups, with the biggest increase seen amongst younger mothers and those born outside of Australia. The national target of having in excess of 90% of mothers breastfeeding at discharge from hospital has been achieved in Perth. Aim: To describe an evidence-based model for preventive child health care and present some findings from baseline measurements.Methods: The model includes: parent education; methods for interaction and language training; follow-up of low birthweight children; identification and treatment of postnatal depression, interaction difficulties, motor problems, parenthood stress, and psychosocial problems. After baseline measurements at 18 mo (cohort I), the intervention was tested on children from 0 to 18 mo at 18 child health centres in Uppsala County (cohort II). Eighteen centres in other counties served as controls. Two centres from a privileged area were included in the baseline measurements as a "contrasting" sample. Data are derived from health records and questionnaires to nurses and mothers.Results: Baseline experiment (n = 457) and control mothers (n = 510) were largely comparable in a number of respects. Experiment parents were of higher educational and occupational status, and were more frequently of non-Nordic ethnicity. Mothers in the privileged area (n = 72) differed from other mothers in several respects. Experiment nurses devoted considerably fewer hours per week to child health services and to child patients than did control nurses.Conclusions: Despite certain differences, experiment and control samples appeared comparable enough to permit, in a second step, conclusions about the effectiveness of the intervention. Aims: To evaluate the effect of the implementation of an asthma clinical pathway on asthma in children in general practice.Methods: A randomized, controlled trial involving 270 general practitioners. One group of general practitioners implemented the asthma clinical pathway for children (intervention group) and the control group continued with their usual asthma medical care management. The main outcome measures were admissions to hospital for asthma and attendance at the Children's Emergency Department. Compliance with the guidelines was assessed by examining asthma drug prescriptions.Results: Admissions to hospital for asthma dropped 40% in the intervention group, by 33% in the control group and by 22% in general practitioners not participating in the trial. The differences between the intervention and control and between the intervention and non-participating general practitioners were not statistically significant. The decrease in attendance at the Children's Emergency Department decreased by 25%, 30% and 19%, respectively, but this was not statistically significant. There was a significant decrease in prescriptions for oral relievers, dry powder relievers in the under 6s, mast cell stabilizers and methylxanthines in both control and intervention groups. However, only for oral relievers was there a significant difference between the intervention group and control, with the decrease larger in the intervention group (p < 0.001).Conclusions: Admissions to hospital for asthma decreased, as did attendance at the Children's Emergency Department. Prescriptions for asthma medication changed in the direction anticipated with compliance with the asthma clinical pathway. However, we found no evidence within the study that implementation of the asthma clinical pathway by general practitioners resulted in lower morbidity than those general practitioners who did not implement the pathway. Possible explanations are that these general practitioners were already providing care according to the recommendations of the pathway, or that there was contamination of the control group by the intervention, or that the guidelines, although based on currently accepted recommendations, are ineffective. Background: Patients with thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) are deficient in von Willebrand factor (VWF)-cleaving protease, called ADAMTS13, and are prone to develop abnormal intravascular platelet aggregation leading to focal cerebral ischaemia. We speculated that low levels of ADAMTS13 are present in premature infants. This might result in platelet aggregation with subsequent ischaemia, vessel rupture and haemorrhage, and thus contribute to intraventricular haemorrhage and periventricular leucomalacia (IVH and PVL).Patients and Methods: Nine preterm infants with gestational ages 23.7 to 30.9 (median 25.7) wk, and 10 healthy term control infants with gestational ages 36.9 to 39 (median 37.9) wk were included. Blood was sampled from the umbilical cord at delivery, and levels of ADAMTS13, VWF antigen and VWF collagen binding activity were analysed.Results: The mean ADAMTS13 level in preterm infants was lower than in the term infants, but the difference between the groups was not statistically significant. However, in the preterm group there was a positive correlation between ADAMTS13 and both gestational age (r = 0.70, p = 0.035) and birthweight (r = 0.83, p = 0.005). Three preterm infants had ADAMTS13 of 18-20%. One of these developed a germinal matrix haemorrhage and PVL, and this infant had the lowest measured ADAMTS13 of all. The levels of VWF antigenand VWF collagen bindingactivity were higher in the preterm infants.Conclusion: This pilot study showed that preterm infants have low levels of ADAMTS13. Aim: To evaluate whether the presence of immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) in early childhood is associated with later asthma, and to evaluate a new diagnostic test for RSV, reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), comparing it to the antigen and antibody assays initially used in RSV diagnostics in the present cohort.Methods: At the start of the study in 1992-1993, RSV was studied by antigen detection (using time-resolved fluoroimmunoassay) and complement-fixing antibody assay. Advances in methodology allowed us to supplement RSV studies by RT-PCR in frozen nasopharyngeal aspirates obtained on admission, and by specific IgG antibodies (using enzyme immunoassay) in frozen serum samples obtained during the follow-up.Results: On admission, 29 of the 100 children hospitalized for wheezing at <2 y of age were RSV positive. When compared with conventional methods, the sensitivity of RT-PCR was 83% (100% w.r.t. antigen detection) and its specificity was 92% in diagnosing RSV infection. RSV-specific IgG antibody concentrations rose with age, but were not predictive of asthma at any age. In the present cohort, wheezing without RSV was particularly associated with increased risk for later childhood asthma.Conclusion: Hospitalization for wheezing in infancy is associated with increased risk for later childhood asthma, particularly in children without RSV infection on admission, although children with RSV have also slightly increased risk for later asthma. However, mere serological evidence of RSV infection is not associated with the development of asthma. In addition to RSV, more attention should be paid to less virulent agents in order to find those wheezing infants who are at particular risk of later childhood asthma. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: To study the relationship between socio-economic factors and coeliac disease.Methods: This study was part of a prospective cohort study of 16 286 children born from 1 October 1997-1 October 1999 (the ABIS study; All Babies in Southeast Sweden). Eight paediatric departments recorded all children with coeliac disease in southeast Sweden. Coeliac disease was confirmed through biopsy. Socio-economic characteristics (maternal employment, civil status, whether parents were born in Sweden, parental education, place of living before pregnancy and during pregnancy, crowded living), infant sex, previous siblings, parental age and maternal alcohol consumption during pregnancy were analysed using logistic regression. All data, except for those related to diagnosis of coeliac disease, were obtained through a questionnaire distributed at birth.Results: Coeliac disease in the offspring was less common among mothers who had worked < 3 mo during pregnancy (odds ratio, OR = 0.29; 95% CI: 0.09-0.94; p = 0.039). This risk decrease remained after adjustment for confounders (adjusted OR = 0.28; 95% CI: 0.09-0.92; p = 0.035). No other socio-economic factor was related to coeliac disease.Conclusion: This study indicates that most socio-economic factors are probably of little importance to the development of coeliac disease. Aim: To report the relationship between maternal prenatal intention to breastfeed and the actual initiation and duration of breastfeeding. Methods: Pregnant women resident within Avon, UK, expected to give birth between 1 April 1991 and 31 December 1992 were recruited in a longitudinal cohort study. Main outcome measures included maternal infant feeding intention (breastfeed, breast and bottle feed, bottle feed, or uncertain) at 32 wk of pregnancy: intention in the first week, intention for the rest of the first month and intention in months 2 to 4; initiation and duration of breastfeeding up to six months. Results: Data were available on 10,548 women. Prenatal intention to breastfeed had an influence on both initiation and duration of breastfeeding. Of the women intending to bottle feed from birth, only 3.4% initiated breastfeeding compared with 96.6% of women planning to breastfeed for at least four months. At six months postpartum, the mean duration of breastfeeding for women intending to breastfeed for at least five months was 4.4 mo (95% CI 4.3, 4.4), compared with 2.5 mo (95% CI 2.4, 2.6) for women with a prenatal intention to breastfeed for only one month. Logistic regression, using intended duration as the only explanatory variable, correctly predicted 91.4% of breastfeeding initiation and 72.2% of infant feeding at six months. Conclusions: This large population-based study confirms the strength of the relationship between maternal prenatal intention to breastfeed and both breastfeeding initiation and duration. Maternal intention was a stronger predictor than the standard demographic factors combined. This should be taken into account in future research, and trials should be undertaken to establish whether interventions could alter maternal intention and thereby increase rates of breastfeeding initiation and duration. Aim: To evaluate the effects of gender, apolipoprotein E phenotype and cholesterol absorption and synthesis (estimated as serum plant sterol and cholesterol precursor sterol concentrations) on the cholesterol-lowering effect of plant stanol esters in children.Methods: Eighty-one healthy, normocholesterolaemic 6-y-old children (45 boys) were recruited from the Special Turku Coronary Risk Factor Intervention Project (STRIP), a randomized prospective trial aiming at atherosclerosis prevention in childhood. This placebo-controlled, double-blind, cross-over study comprised two 3-mo study periods and a 6-wk wash-out period. During the study periods, 20 g of the children's daily dietary fat intake was replaced with plant stanol ester margarine or control margarine.Results: In boys, plant stanol esters reduced serum total and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol concentrations by 6% (0.09 to 0.42 mmol/L) and 9% (0.09 to 0.36 mmol/L), respectively (p < 0.01 for both). In girls, the decreases in concentrations were 4% (0.03 to 0.38 mmol/L) and 6% (0.02 to 0.32 mmol/l) (p < 0.05 for both). The response rate did not differ between the genders. Serum total and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol concentrations decreased by 6% and 8% (p < 0.01 for both), respectively, in both children with the apolipoprotein E 3/4 or 4/4 (apoE4+) phenotype and the apolipoprotein E 2/3 or 3/3 (apoE4-) phenotype. Cholesterol absorption decreased both in the apoE4+ children and in the apoE4- children, but cholesterol synthesis consistently increased in the apoE4+ children only.Conclusion: Plant stanol esters reduce serum cholesterol concentration in healthy children irrespective of their gender or apoE4 phenotype. Unlabelled: Owing to a lack of longitudinal studies, the effect of centralization of care on pulmonary function and survival remains unclear. Three different levels of involvement of centralized care in the treatment of paediatric cystic fibrosis patients were compared with regard to longitudinal pulmonary function and nutritional and microbiological status in a 3-y period, and the literature was reviewed on the possible advantages and disadvantages of centralized care. The study included 105 paediatric patients attending the Cystic Fibrosis Centre between January 1997 and January 2001. Twenty-three patients were treated by local paediatricians according to the protocol of the Centre and were seen only once a year at the Centre, for an annual check-up (local care). Forty-one patients were treated at the Centre only (centralized care). The remaining 41 patients were treated in close cooperation between the Centre and local hospitals, with patients visiting the doctors alternately (shared care). The mean annual changes in pulmonary function and body mass index from all patients, as well as a microbiological survey, were reviewed. No significant differences were found between the three groups for annual changes in FEV1, FVC and body mass index, nor did the review of microbial colonization show any significant differences between the groups. Because the groups in this study were relatively small, the results might have been influenced by lack of power.Conclusion: In this relatively small group, no differences in pulmonary function, nutritional status or microbiological colonization between the three levels of involvement of centralized care could be found. Unlabelled: A randomized, controlled, prospective study of 80 preterm infants of birthweight less than 1750 g requiring ventilatory support was performed. While ventilatory support was required group TF (39 infants) received trophic feeding (0.5-1 ml h(-1)) along with parenteral nutrition, whereas group C (41 infants) received parenteral nutrition alone. When ventilatory support was no longer required milk feeds were started in group C and then increased in both groups until full milk feeds were established. The ratio of lactase to sucrase activity (L:S ratio) was measured in aspirated proximal intestinal fluid on 3 occasions: immediately after ventilatory support was withdrawn (T0), 7 days later (T7) and 14 days later (T14). On the same 3 occasions faecal chymotrypsin activity was measured. The mean difference (95% confidence interval) L:S ratio was significantly higher in group TF at both T0 and T14, 1.8 (0.03, 3.57) and 0.78 (0.2, 1.35) U l(-1), respectively. There was no significant difference in faecal chymotrypsin concentration.Conclusion: Trophic feeding alters relative intestinal disaccharidase activity, probably by inducing lactase production, but has no effect on pancreatic chymotrypsin activity. Unlabelled: Immunological approaches have been considered as an alternative therapeutic option for the treatment of enteric infections over the past few years. Hyperimmune bovine colostrum (HBC) is a potentially innovative immunological option in the management of shigellosis together with traditional antibiotic therapy. Children aged 1-12 y with a history of bloody mucoid diarrhoea of less than 5 d duration were enrolled after their stool specimen was found to be positive for Shigella dysenteriae type I antigen by a rapid diagnostic fluorescent antibody staining test. They were randomized to receive either HBC containing very high titres of antibody against S. dysenteriae type I antigen or bovine colostrum (BC) without any antibody. The study group received 100 ml of HBC three times a day orally for 3 d and control group received BC. Children also received pivmecillinam in a dose of 50 mg kg(-1) d(-1) in four divided doses orally for 5 d. Admission characteristics of the 34 children in the HBC group and 35 in the BC group were comparable. No significant differences were observed in duration of diarrhoea, fever, anorexia, abdominal pain, tenesmus, stool frequency or visible blood in the stool between the groups. Two (6%) children in the study and five (14%) in the control group remained stool culture positive for S. dysenteriae type 1, even after 5 d of sensitive antimicrobial therapy.Conclusion: The results indicate that HBC as an adjuvant is unable to show any beneficial effect in reducing the stool frequency, duration or severity of childhood shigellosis due to S. dysenteriae type I infection. Aim: The clinical diagnosis of sepsis is difficult, particularly in neonates. It is necessary to develop a rapid and reliable method for detecting bacteria in blood and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and reverse hybridization of the 16S rRNA gene would permit fast and sensitive determination of the presence of bacteria and differentiate gram-positive bacteria from gram-negative ones in clinical specimens.Methods: We developed a pair of primers according to the gene encoding 16SrRNA found in all bacteria. DNA fragments from different bacterial species and from clinical samples were detected with PCR, and with reverse hybridization using a universal bacterial probe, a gram-positive probe and a gram-negative probe.Results: A 371 bp DNA fragment was amplified from 20 different bacterial species. No signal was observed when human DNA and viruses were used as templates. The sensitivity could be improved to 10(-12) g. All 26 culture-positive clinical samples (22 blood samples and 4 CSF samples) were positive with PCR. The gram-negative and gram-positive probes hybridized to clinical samples and to known bacterial controls, as predicted by Gram's stain characteristics.Conclusions: Our results suggest that the method of PCR and reverse hybridization is rapid, sensitive and specific in detecting bacterial infections. Inhibition of the function of pulmonary surfactant in the alveolar space is an important element of the pathophysiology of many lung diseases, including meconium aspiration syndrome, pneumonia and acute respiratory distress syndrome. The known mechanisms by which surfactant dysfunction occurs are (a) competitive inhibition of phospholipid entry into the surface monolayer (e.g. by plasma proteins), and (b) infiltration and destabilization of the surface film by extraneous lipids (e.g. meconium-derived free fatty acids). Recent data suggest that addition of non-ionic polymers such as dextran and polyethylene glycol to surfactant mixtures may significantly improve resistance to inhibition. Polymers have been found to neutralize the effects of several different inhibitors, and can produce near-complete restoration of surfactant function. The anti-inhibitory properties of polymers, and their possible role as an adjunct to surfactant therapy, deserve further exploration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Unlabelled: Serum ferritin and serum transferrin receptor concentrations, growth and food habits were studied in healthy Swedish boys (n = 103) and girls (n = 124) at the age of 17 y and compared with those in the same adolescents at age 15. Between these ages, serum transferrin receptor increased significantly in both boys and girls. Serum ferritin increased significantly in boys but not in girls. The transferrin receptor/ferritin ratio increased significantly in girls but not in boys, indicating insufficient iron stores in the 17-y-old girls in relation to erythropoiesis and iron needs. Between 15 and 17 y the boys' frequency of consumption of milk and bread decreased, while they more often consumed pasta, cheese and coffee. The girls decreased their frequency intake of fat products, milk and meat. The frequency of meat consumption emerged as the single significant predictor for serum ferritin <12 microg/L in girls, but not in boys. The median daily iron intake, determined in a subsample, decreased in boys from 18.7 to 13.6 mg and in girls from 14.1 to 8.8 mg, and the decrease was to a large extent due to cessation of iron fortification of flour.Conclusions: The results indicate insufficient iron stores in the 17-y-old girls in relation to erythropoiesis and iron needs, but more favourable iron stores in the boys. The absence of a significant decrease in mean serum ferritin despite rapid growth suggests that the earlier iron fortification of flour only marginally contributed to the iron status of Swedish adolescents of this age group. This study evaluates the predictability of a new language screening procedure in 3-y-olds. It is used in several Child Health Centres (CHC) in Sweden and has the character of a field study involving more than 60 CHC nurses. The main questions concern the (i) development in 3-y-olds assessed as severely language delayed and (ii) whether there are any earlier unknown severely disabled children identified at 4 y of age. Ninety-six percent of the original study population participated in the follow-up. The calculations are based on results from 2237 children. A well-established screening routine, which has been shown capable of predicting the risk of not being able to follow expected schooling, and case records were used as an acceptable proxy outcome measure, pending a better gold standard. In the group of severely disabled 3-y-olds, sensitivity, specificity and positive predictive values were 86, 99 and 43%, respectively. Finally, three false-negatives were identified. This study investigated the effect of early feeding mode on the neurological condition at 42 months. For this purpose, healthy pregnant women were recruited in Groningen and Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Children were healthy and born at term. At 42 months, the children were neurologically examined by means of the Touwen/Hempel technique. In addition to the clinical diagnosis, the neurological findings were interpreted in terms of optimality. Special attention was paid to the quality of movements in terms of fluency. In total, 200 (51%) exclusively breastfed(for > or = 6 weeks) and 194 (49%) formula-fed children were studied. Twelve (3%) 42-month-old children were considered to be neurologically mildly abnormal and 1 child was diagnosed as abnormal. No effect of the type of feeding was found on the clinical diagnosis or the neurological optimality. After adjustments for study centre and social, obstetric, perinatal and neonatal neurological differences, a beneficial effect of breastfeeding on the fluency of movements was found (odds ratio for non-optimal fluency 0.56; 95% confidence interval 0.37-0.85). The prolongation of full breastfeeding beyond 6 weeks did not influence the quality of movements. In conclusion, among Dutch preschool children, there was a small advantageous effect of full breastfeeding during the first 6 weeks of life on the fluency of movements. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We investigated colonization with Ureaplasma urealyticum (Uu) in infants <30 weeks gestation and assessed the relationship to other risk factors influencing respiratory morbidity, plus the effect of treatment with erythromycin. Ventilated preterm infants [n = 155; median GA 26 (23-29) weeks] were cultured for Uu in endotracheal aspirate and nasopharynx. Colonized infants were randomly assigned to treatment with erythromycin 40 mg/kg/d, intravenously or orally. The rate of colonization was 29/155 (19%) and the Uu-colonized infants had lower mean gestational ages than the culture-negative infants (25 vs 26 weeks). For the colonized infants PROM (48% vs 12%), chorioamnionitis in the mother (46% vs 17%) and vaginal delivery (71% vs 29%) were more common. More colonized infants needed supplemental oxygen at 36 weeks' postconceptual age (p < 0.05). Erythromycin treatment was effective in reducing colonization with negative control cultures in 12/14 (86%) of treated infants. No significant differences were found between the colonized treated infants (n = 14) and those not treated (n = 14) in time with supplemental oxygen. Oxygen requirement at 36 weeks was related to lower gestational age, late appearance of PDA, late onset sepsis and signs of chorioamnionitis in the mother. We conclude that the Uu colonization is related to increasing immaturity, the presence of prolonged rupture of membranes, signs of chorioamnionitis and vaginal delivery. Unlabelled: The objective of this study was to investigate the association hypothesis that outcome following respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) induced bronchiolitis (RSVB) and RSV induced wheeze (RSVW) are different. At 3 years respiratory symptoms were more common in those with RSV infection than the control group but there was no increase in allergic sensitisation (11% vs 10%). Those with RSVW were more likely to have evidence of allergic sensitisation when compared with RSVB subjects (22% vs 7%), and have increased symptoms and increased use of inhaled steroids.Conclusion: The data argue that RSV infection during infancy does not induce allergic asthma and that host factors rather than the virus determine long-term outcomes. Unlabelled: Gastric aspirates were obtained from 80 newborn babies (gestational age 24-34 wk). Fifteen of these babies developed respiratory distress syndrome (RDS). Bubbles were generated in the samples by vigorous suctioning and the number and size distribution of the bubbles were determined in random fields by computer-aided image analysis. Sensitivity and specificity for prediction of RDS were 87% and 78% for average diameter of bubbles (cut-off points >45 microm) and similar for the proportion and total number of microbubbles (diameter <20 microm).Conclusion: Computerized image analysis of bubbles in gastric aspirate can be used for non-biased prediction of RDS in newborn babies.
