Objective: The purpose of the present study was to identify the 100 top cited systematic reviews and meta-analyses on dental journals so as to gain insight into the influential publications in dentistry.Material and methods: The Web of Science was used to comprehensively identify the 100 most cited papers without year and language restriction. Specific parameters regarding the title, journal, publication year, authors, country of origin, institution and university, collaborations, keyword analysis and field of study of each manuscript were retrieved.Results: The citations ranged from 642 to 140. The most productive years were 2008 and 2009. The majority of top cited papers were published in Clinical Oral Implants Research and Journal of Clinical Periodontology. The leading countries were United States, followed by Switzerland. The University of Zurich was the most productive institution with 8 articles. Major topics of interest in the top 100 most-cited papers were dental implants and periodontology. The most frequently occurring keywords were systematic review, dental implants and meta-analyses.Conclusions: Systematic reviews published in high impact factor Dental journals focused on implantology and periodontology had the highest citation rates. With an increased number of questionnaire-based knowledge, attitude, practice and other types of studies, there is a need to perform evidence-based research in such designs as well. The systematic reviews (SR) and meta-analyses (MA) of the questionnaire-based studies are difficult to conduct and summarise due to the wide variations in the questions included in each of them. The presentation of these reviews often leads to ambiguous conclusions, and meta-analysis is not possible due to wide heterogeneity. This paper aims to highlight a method known as the 'Knowledge-Attitude-Practice' or 'KAP' Heat Map, which was developed and validated for the effective presentation of the outcomes of varied questionnaires in systematic reviews. Objective. This paper aims to provide a systematic review of the caries-prevention effect of fluoridated food, excluding water. The main aim of this review was to evaluate the presence of scientific evidence relating to the effects of fluoride intake via food on the occurrence of carious lesions. The outcome was defined as a clinical outcome, so only papers evaluating a decrease in caries indices were included. Materials and methods. Relevant databases (Medline®, Embase®, The Cochrane Library) were searched. The date range was set from 01.01.1966 to 03.31.2011. One hundred and thirty-nine reports were identified and assessed. Only three papers fulfilled the inclusion criteria and were discussed in detail. Results. No paper related to the use of fluoridated salt in caries prevention fulfilled the inclusion criteria. The use of milk as a vehicle for providing additional fluoride in a dental public health programme was evaluated in two papers. The consumption of fluoridated milk was an effective measure to prevent caries in the primary teeth. The use of fluoridated sugar demonstrated a reduction in caries increment in the permanent dentition in one paper. Conclusions. Literature on the effectiveness of fluoridation in foods in caries prevention is scant and almost all the studies have been conducted in children. Objective. Amelogenesis imperfecta (AI) is a disease primarily affecting amelogenesis, but other aberrations have been reported. The purposes of this review were: (1) to identify other anomalies associated with AI, and (2) to describe the impact of the disease and its associated conditions on the oral health-related quality of life of patients, and the economic consequences. Material and methods. A literature search was conducted in the following databases: PubMed, EMBASE, Bibliotek.dk, The Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and OMIM, supplemented by a search for selected authors. Based on titles and abstracts, 137 papers were identified. Results. Most articles were case reports or case series with few cases. Aberrations were reported in the eruption process, in the morphology of the crown, in the pulp-dentine organ, and in the number of teeth. Gingival conditions and oral hygiene were usually reported to be poor, and calculus was a common finding. Open bite was the most commonly reported malocclusion. A negative impact on patients' oral health-related quality of life was described, but information was scarce. No information was found on the economic impact. Conclusions. A number of aberrations associated with AI have been reported, but not sufficiently systematic to allow for a secondary analysis and synthesis of the findings. Objectives: To investigate the effectiveness of an upper removable appliance in the treatment of an anterior crossbite in term of quality of life, effectiveness, treatment time, long term stability and cost minimization.Design: Systematic reviewData source: A search strategy was implemented using both manual hand search and electronic databases, including Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), PubMed, ScienceDirect, Scopus and Ebsco.Study eligibility criteria: Randomized controlled clinical trialsParticipants: Children in the early or late mixed dentition with an anterior crossbite affecting one or more incisors, and no underlying skeletal class III pattern.Interventions: Upper removable appliance compared with other orthodontic appliances.Study appraisal and synthesis: All potential articles were checked against the inclusion criteria independently, and in duplicate by two investigators. Risk of bias of eligible studies to be included in the final analysis was assessed independently by two authors using Cochrane risk of bias tool.Results: A total of 524 articles were identified in both manual and electronic searches as well as by checking the reference lists of the final articles to be included in the study. Only 7 reports of 3 RCTs met the inclusion criteria and thus were included in the final analysis. All but one of the 3 RCTs were judged to be of very low quality. No statistical methods were employed to combine the studies due to the heterogeneity of the studies.Conclusion: A fixed appliance was more cost-effective than a removable appliance in the correction of an anterior crossbite with a functional shift. There was no significant difference in terms of quality of life, pain intensity or long-term stability between the two appliances. The aim of this paper was systematically to evaluate the caries-preventive effect of professional fluoride varnish treatments. A search of the literature for articles published between 1966 and August 2003 was carried out in electronic databases, reference lists of articles, and selected textbooks in accordance with the strategy of the Swedish Council on Technology Assessment in Health Care. Out of 302 identified papers, 24 randomized and controlled clinical trials comparing fluoride varnish with placebo, no active treatment or other fluoride preventive regimens of at least 2 years' study duration were included. The trials that met the inclusion criteria were assessed independently and systematically by at least two reviewers and scored from A to C according to predetermined criteria for methodology and performance. The main outcome measure was the preventive fraction expressed as a percentage. The results displayed limited evidence (evidence level 3) for the caries preventive effect of topical applications of fluoride varnishes in permanent teeth. The average prevented fraction was 30% (0-69%) when compared with untreated controls. Inconclusive evidence (evidence level 4) was found for fluoride varnish treatment in the primary dentition and in adults. This systematic review reinforces the need for future clinical research of high quality, incorporating modern concepts of clinical performance and evaluation to assess dental caries control using professional fluoride varnish. The systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the efficacy of Metformin (MF) with Platelet Rich Fibrin (PRF) over PRF alone in the treatment of periodontal osseous defects. An extensive electronic search for articles published up to September 2021 was conducted on 'Embase', 'PubMed' and other library databases accompanied with manual searching. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs), comparing MF plus PRF Vs PRF alone in periodontal osseous defects were identified in which periodontal pocket depth (PPD), Clinical attachment level (CAL) and Intrabony defect depth (IBD Depth) were the outcome measures. Four studies compared MF plus PRF vs.PRF alone in periodontal osseous defects. Meta-analysis was carried out for PPD reduction, CAL gain and IBD Depth changes. A standardized mean difference (SMD) of 1.86 for PPD reduction, 1.95 for CAL gain and 1.31 for IBD Depth reduction in all the studies was observed and the findings were statistically significant favouring test group. The systematic review indicates supplemental benefits of combination therapy of MF + PRF over monotherapy in resolving periodontal osseous defects. In our quest to achieve maximum regeneration in periodontal osseous defects, combination therapies such as MF + PRF have reported to be better treatment choices over other modalities. To identify common resilience factors against non-communicable diseases (dental caries, diabetes type II, obesity and cardiovascular disease) among healthy individuals exposed to chronic adversity. The databases MEDLINE (via PubMed), Scopus and CINAHL were searched. Observational studies in English assessing resilience factors among populations living in chronic adversity were included. Intervention studies, systematic reviews, non-original articles and qualitative studies were excluded. There were no restrictions regarding publication year or age. No meta-analysis could be done. Quality assessments were made with the Newcastle-Ottawa scale (NOS). A final total of 41 studies were included in this systematic review. The investigated health resilience factors were divided into the following domains: environmental (community and family) and individual (behavioural and psychosocial). A narrative synthesis of the results was made according to the domains. Individual psychosocial, family and environmental factors play a role as health resilience factors in populations living in chronic adversity. However, the inconclusive results suggest that these factors do not act in isolation but interplay in a complex manner and that their interaction may vary during the life course, in different contexts, and over time. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis is to identify the risk factors of external root resorption (ERR) on second molar (M2) due to presence of impacted third (M3) molar based on cone- beam computerised tomography (CBCT) findings. Search of PubMed via MEDLINE, SCOPUS, and Experta Medical dataBASE (EMBASE) was performed to identify studies assessing the risk factors of ERR in M2 due to the presence of impacted M3. M2 in close proximity to mesio-angular impacted M3 had 50% higher risk of root resorption than with vertical impacted M3 (RR 0.50 95% CI [0.35, 0.73], p =.0003). Presence of the impacted M3 in the lower arch with ERR in M2 was higher (38.3%) than in the upper arch (33.8%). With respect to the inclination of impacted M3, the incidence of ERR was higher with transverse, horizontal and mesio-angular impacted M3 with 54.5%, 47.5% and 44.5% of occurrence, respectively. ERR in M2 was significantly affected by the contact with impacted M3 and most importantly, the inclination of M3. The presence of mesio-angular, horizontal or transverse impacted M3 in close proximity to apical or middle portion of M2 could possibly be a strong risk factor for ERR in M2. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aims of this systematic review were to evaluate the clinical masticatory performance of implant-supported restorations, observe the occlusal force changes in the distribution of the implant restoration and reveal the positive and negative contributing factors of implant design and components based on the outcomes of digital occlusal measurement. An extensive search was conducted through PubMed and CENTRAL to identify clinical trials on implant-retained restorations using digital occlusal analysis methods. Two researchers assessed the identified studies and data extraction independently, and the data synthesis strategies without meta-analysis that summarizes the effect estimates were adopted. The search screened 3821 titles and abstracts, then full-text analysis for 26 articles was performed, and 14 studies were included in the quantitative synthesis. Four of six studies for implant-retained overdenture showed statistically significant improved bite force when immediate loading (p =.00045,.00005,.00055, and.00005, respectively), and no statistically significant results in the other two studies (p =.225,.371, respectively.) However, the results of the favoured intervention were not statistically significant (p =.104,.166, respectively) in two studies of single posterior implant restorations. In all three studies, the bite force distributed on the implant prostheses of partially fixed implant-retained restoration increased statistically significantly (p =.013,.001,.05, respectively). The edentulous restoration supported by implants seems to significantly improves bite force and chewing efficiency compared with conventional dentures. Regular quantitative occlusal measurement is recommended to avoid the possible risk of overload. To describe and assess the available evidence of prediction methods of maxillary canine impaction (MCI). A systematic search was conducted through PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, EBSCOhost, Scopus, ScienceDirect, Bireme and Scielo until December 2020. This systematic review was conducted according to the PRISMA statement. The methodology of the selected studies was assessed using the Quality Assessment Tool for Diagnostic Accuracy Studies (QUADAS-2). A total of 2391 articles were identified in the first approach and after a 2-phase selection, 11 studies were included in qualitative analysis. Prediction methods were constructed using equation-based models, geometric measurements and computational methods from clinical and imaging data to predict palatal/buccal MCI. The quality of evidence was low to moderate due to the presence of risk of bias in most of the studies included. Three cohort studies with the best methodological quality proposed prediction models based on geometric measurements, canine position and facial growth pattern that would allow predicting MCI from CBCT, lateral and panoramic radiographs. The evidence is limited and most of the studies present a low methodological quality. However, it is possible to suggest that some prediction methods based on the position of the canine and facial growth pattern could predict palatal/buccal MCI in mixed dentition. This systematic review (SR) aims to evaluate the efficacy of modified coronally advanced flap (mCAF) on clinical and patient-reported outcomes in the treatment of multiple adjacent gingival recessions (MAGRs). Randomized controlled trials (RCTs), case-series and prospective clinical studies on treatment of Miller class I/II or RT1 MAGRs with ≥ 6 months follow-up were identified from the electronic databases and hand-searched journals. Complete root coverage (CRC) was the primary outcome variable. To evaluate treatment effects, meta-analysis was conducted, wherever appropriate. A total of 1395 recessions in 408 patients were evaluated in SR and meta-analysis was performed for four RCTs. Overall CRC achieved with mCAF was 70% and mean root coverage (MRC) ranged from 51.58 to 97.27%. Meta-analysis showed that combination of mCAF with connective tissue graft (CTG) or collagen matrix (CM) demonstrated significantly higher CRC% and recession reduction than mCAF alone. Limited evidence is available to support the use of platelet rich fibrin or enamel matrix derivative or acellular dermal matrix graft along with mCAF to further enhance its efficacy. mCAF is an effective procedure for treating MAGRs and in terms of achieving CRC and MRC. Poor oral health is related with bacteraemia that may lead to endocarditis in children with congenital heart disease (CHD). The aim of this study was to conduct a systematic literature review to compare caries prevalence in children (<18 years of age) with CHD with healthy children. A literature search of studies from two online databases (Pubmed (MEDLINE) and Scopus) published from January 2000 to October 2019 using Medical subject heading terms Congenital Heart Disease, Congenital Heart Defect, and Caries was done, and manual search from the reference lists of selected publications. PICO (Patient/Population, Intervention, Comparison group, and Outcome) criteria was applied. Quality of the publications was assessed with the modified Newcastle-Ottawa scale. The search resulted in 151 articles of which nine fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Caries prevalence was significantly higher in children with CHD compared to healthy children in three out of nine studies. Information on predisposing background factors was limited but difference in caries prevalence was not attributed to SES. The quality of the studies varied. Although evidence is limited, the current literature indicates that children with CHD experience a higher caries prevalence compared to healthy children. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present systematic review was conducted to investigate the effect of the self-assembling peptide (SAP) – P11-4 in the remineralization of enamel caries. The systematic search for studies was conducted through CINAHL, EMBASE, MEDLINE, Scopus, PsychINFO, and various key journals. This review was conducted in adherence to PRISMA standards and was registered in PROSPERO with registration number CRD42019110156. The methodological quality of the studies was graded through Cochrane's tool of risk of bias in non-randomized studies – of interventions (ROBINS-I). In total, 91 studies were identified for screening, and 12 studies were eligible. Ten studies showed effective enamel remineralization with P11-4 compared to controls. One study showed a combination of P11-4 with fluoride varnish or Casein Phosphopeptide-Amorphous Calcium Phosphate Fluoride (CPP-ACPF) leads to significantly higher remineralization compared to P11-4 alone. Quality assessment of study showed 6 (50%) studies as medium risk of bias and 6 (50%) studies as low risk of bias. Central giant cell granuloma (CGCG) can coexist with other benign lesions of the jaw. These hybrid lesions are diagnostically challenging to both oral pathologists and radiologists. This work systematically reviews the clinical and radiographic features of hybrid-CGCG lesions in the jaws. Three reviewers conducted an electronic search of five databases for histologically diagnosed hybrid-CGCG lesions in human jaws. Thirty-four of 1224 articles met the inclusion criteria. Of 39 hybrid-CGCG lesions, 14 (35.9%) were central odontogenic fibroma, 11 (28.2%) were central ossifying fibroma, seven (17.9%) were fibrous dysplasia, and seven (17.9%) were other bone conditions. There were 22 females and 17 males with a mean age of 30.5 ± 19.9 years. 89.5% of hybrid-CGCG lesions were well defined, 57.9% were non-corticated, 60.5% were radiolucent, and 66.7% were in the posterior mandible. Most hybrid lesions affected the cortical plates by thinning, expansion, or perforation (93.1%), displaced, or resorbed teeth (60%). The radiographic features of hybrid-CGCG lesions vary according to the concurrent bony lesion. Hybrid-CGCG lesions altered the radiographic appearance with the following entities: fibrous dysplasia, melorheostosis, and Paget's disease. Optimal imaging modalities are crucial to detail radiographic features and direct representative biopsy of suspicious sites that may host a CGCG hybridisation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of the study was to evaluate a potential association between individuals with different craniofacial types or other exposures, and the risk of infraposition due to continued growth/eruption of adjacent teeth in the anterior maxilla. This is a systematic review in which primary studies as well as other systematic reviews are scrutinised. A search of PubMed (Medline), Scopus, Web of science and Health technology assessment (HTA) organisations and a complementary handsearch was carried out. Selected studies were read in full-text by several reviewers. The quality of the included primary studies was assessed using a protocol for assessment of risk of bias in exposure studies. The literature search resulted in 3,296 publications. Title and abstract screening yielded 25, whereof one systematic review, potential publications allocated for full-text inspection. The quality assessment resulted in a total of seven studies with a low/moderate risk of bias and four studies with a high risk of bias. In conclusion, a long-term risk for infraposition of dental implants, or ankylosed teeth, among natural teeth can be observed in some cases. Background: The objective of the study was to assess the effect of prophylactic antibiotics on the outcome of bone augmentation and subsequent dental implant placement by combining the recommended quality assessment methods for systematic reviews and primary studies.Materials and methods: This is a complex systematic review in which systematic reviews as well as primary studies are scrutinised. A search of Medline (OVID), The Cochrane Library (Wiley) and EMBASE, PubMed and Health technology assessment (HTA) organisations as-well as a complementary hand-search was carried out. Selected primary studies were assessed using GRADE. Each study was reviewed by three authors independently.Results: Abstract screening yielded six potential systematic reviews allocated for full-text inspection. A total of ten primary studies were read in full-text. No relevant systematic reviews regarding the topic of this article were found. The quality assessment resulted in two primary studies with a moderate risk of bias. Of the two studies with a moderate risk of bias, one compared a single dose of clindamycin 600 mg preoperatively with the same preoperative dose followed by four doses of 300 mg every 6 h. The second study compared a single dose prophylaxis of two different types of antibiotic compounds.Conclusion: In conclusion, the scientific evidence regarding the use of antibiotic prophylaxis for reducing the risk of infection in conjunction with bone augmentation procedures during dental implant placement is very limited. The infection rate as compared to nonusage of prophylactic antibiotics, selection of the most suitable compound, and the optimal duration of prophylactic treatment is still unknown. Objective: The main purpose of the present systematic review was to evaluate the efficacy of enamel matrix derivative Emdogain in healing of replanted teeth in humans.Materials and Methods: This review conducted in adherence to PRISMA standards and was registered in PROSPERO with registration number CRD42017062736. We graded the methodological quality of the studies by means of Cochrane's tool of risk of bias in non-randomized studies - of interventions (ROBINS-I).Results: In total, 65 studies were identified for screening, and five studies were eligible. The uneventful healing of replanted teeth was varied from 20% to 75%. Two controlled trials found Emdogain treatment significantly reduced resorption of replanted teeth and improved the healing of periodontal ligament compared with controls. Two studies showed high recurrent resorption in Emdogain treated teeth.Conclusions: To conclude, the number of publications that met all inclusion criteria were limited and did not allow for drawing evidence for Emdogain being effective in supporting healing of replanted teeth. Objective: The main purpose of the present systematic review was to evaluate the quantitative effects of the pendulum appliance and modified pendulum appliances for maxillary molar distalization in Class II malocclusion.Materials and Methods: Our systematic search included MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, PsychINFO, Scopus and key journals and review articles; the date of the last search was 30 January 2017. We graded the methodological quality of the studies by means of the Quality Assessment Tool for Quantitative Studies, developed for the Effective Public Health Practice Project (EPHPP).Results: In total, 203 studies were identified for screening, and 25 studies were eligible. The quality assessment rated four (16%) of the study as being of strong quality and 21 (84%) of these studies as being of moderate quality. The pendulum appliances showed mean molar distalization of 2-6.4 mm, distal tipping of molars from 6.67° to 14.50° and anchorage loss with mean premolar and incisor mesial movement of 1.63-3.6 mm and 0.9-6.5 mm, respectively. The bone anchored pendulum appliances (BAPAs) showed mean molar distalization of 4.8-6.4 mm, distal tipping of molars from 9° to 11.3° and mean premolar distalization of 2.7-5.4 mm.Conclusions: Pendulum and modified pendulum appliances are effective in molar distalization. Pendulum appliance with K-loop modification, implant supported pendulum appliance and BAPA significantly reduced anchorage loss of the anterior teeth and distal tipping of the molar teeth. Objective: The objective of the present study was to carry out a systematic review to analyse the effectiveness of pulp revascularization in the root formation of necrotic immature permanent teeth, as well as the level of scientific evidence regarding this theme.Materials and Methods: The methodology was based on searching electronic databases such as Web of Science, Pubmed, BVS (Medline, Scielo, Lilacs and BBO), Scopus and Cochrane, including manual searches for the references listed in the studies found. The terms used for the literature search were pulp revascularization and endodontics.Results: Initially, 277 articles were identified from the electronic databases; 17 studies remained after analysis and exclusion of duplicates; exclusion criteria also eliminated six articles; 11 remained for evaluation.Conclusions: Although the results found in the present systematic review are relevant, the scientific evidence should be interpreted with caution as the articles report different methods and evaluation parameters. Despite the capacity of the pulp revascularization technique to stimulate the development of the apical closure and thickening of radicular dentin, several aspects still remain unknown, like the key factors of this repair, the type of tissue formed and the long-term prognosis.
