The incommensurately modulated structure of (2S,3S)-2-amino-3-hydroxy-3-methyl-4-phenoxybutanoic acid dihydrate (C 11 H 15 NO 4 ·2H 2 O or I·2H 2 O) is described in the (3+1)-dimensional superspace group P2 1 2 1 2 1 (0β0)000 (β = 0.357). The loss of the three-dimensional periodicity is ascribed to the occupational modulation of one positionally disordered solvent water molecule, where the two positions are related by a small translation [ca 0.666 (9) Å] and ∼168 (5)° rotation about one of its O-H bonds, with an average 0.624 (3):0.376 (3) occupancy ratio. The occupational modulation of this molecule arises due to the competition between the different hydrogen-bonding motifs associated with each position. The structure can be very well refined in the average approximation (all satellite reflections disregarded) in the space group P2 1 2 1 2 1 , with the water molecule refined as disordered over two positions in a 0.625 (16):0.375 (16) ratio. The refinement in the commensurate threefold supercell approximation in the space group P112 1 is also of high quality, with the six corresponding water molecules exhibiting three different occupancy ratios averaging 0.635:0.365., (open access.)

Three structurally diverse 5-phenyltetrazolato (Tz) Ti, Zr, and Ta complexes, namely, (C 2 H 8 N)[Ti 2 (C 7 H 5 N 4 ) 5 (C 2 H 6 N) 4 ]·1.45C 6 H 6 or (Me 2 NH 2 )[Ti 2 (NMe 2 ) 4 (2,3-μ-Tz) 3 (2-η 1 -Tz) 2 ]·1.45C 6 H 6 , (1·1.45C 6 H 6 ), [Zr 2 (C 7 H 5 N 4 ) 6 (C 2 H 6 N) 2 (C 2 H 7 N) 2 ]·1.12C 6 H 6 ·0.382CH 2 Cl 2 or [Zr 2 (Me 2 NH) 2 (NMe 2 ) 2 (2,3-μ-Tz) 3 (2-η 1 -Tz) 2 (1,2-η 2 -Tz)]·1.12C 6 H 6 ·0.38CH 2 Cl 2 (2·1.12C 6 H 6 ·0.38CH 2 Cl 2 ), and (C 2 H 8 N) 2 [Ta 2 (C 7 H 5 N 4 ) 8 (C 2 H 6 N) 2 O]·0.25C 7 H 8 or (Me 2 NH 2 ) 2 [Ta 2 (NMe 2 ) 2 (2,3-μ-Tz) 2 (2-η 1 -Tz) 6 O]·0.25C 7 H 8 (3·0.25C 7 H 8 ), where TzH is 5-phenyl-1H-tetrazole, have been synthesized and structurally characterized. All three complexes are dinuclear; the Ti center in 1 is six-coordinate, whereas the Zr and Ta atoms in 2 and 3 are seven-coordinate. The coordination environments of the Ti centers in 1 are similar, and so are the ligations of the Ta centers in 3. In contrast, the two Zr centers in 2 bear a different number of ligands, one of which is a bidentate η 2 -5-phenyltetrazolato ligand that has not been observed previously for d-block elements. The dimethylamido ligand, present in the starting materials, remained unchanged, or was converted to dimethylamine and dimethylammonium during the synthesis. Dimethylamine coordinates as a neutral ligand, whereas dimethylammonium is retained as a hydrogen-bonded entity bridging Tz ligands., (open access.)

A brief comparison of seven straightforward methods for molecular crystal-volume estimation revealed that their precisions are comparable. A chiral diamine, N 2 ,N 3 -bis[2,6-bis(propan-2-yl)phenyl]butane-2,3-diamine, C 28 H 44 N 2 , has been used to illustrate the application of the methods. Three stereoisomers of the diamine cocrystallize in the centrosymmetric space group P2 1 /c with Z' = 1.5. The molecules occupying general positions are RR and SS, whereas that residing on an inversion center is meso. This is one of only ten examples of three stereoisomers with two asymmetric atoms cocrystallizing together reported to the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD). The conformations of the SS/RR and meso molecules differ considerably and lead to statistically significantly different C(asymmetric)-C(asymmetric) bond lengths in the diastereomers. An advanced Python script-based CSD searching technique for chiral compounds is presented.

The Z and E isomers of 3-[4-(dimethylamino)phenyl]-2-(2,4,6-tribromophenyl)acrylonitrile, C 17 H 13 Br 3 N 2 , (1), were obtained simultaneously by a Knoevenagel condensation between 4-(dimethylamino)benzaldehyde and 2-(2,4,6-tribromophenyl)acetonitrile, and were investigated by X-ray diffraction and density functional theory (DFT) quantum-chemical calculations. The (Z)-(1) isomer is monoclinic (space group P2 1 /n, Z' = 1), whereas the (E)-(1) isomer is triclinic (space group P-1, Z' = 2). The two crystallographically-independent molecules of (E)-(1) adopt similar geometries. The corresponding bond lengths and angles in the two isomers of (1) are very similar. The difference in the calculated total energies of isolated molecules of (Z)-(1) and (E)-(1) with DFT-optimized geometries is ∼4.47 kJ mol -1 , with the minimum value corresponding to the Z isomer. The crystal structure of (Z)-(1) reveals strong intermolecular nonvalent Br...N [3.100 (2) and 3.216 (3) Å] interactions which link the molecules into layers parallel to (10-1). In contrast, molecules of (E)-(1) in the crystal are bound to each other by strong nonvalent Br...Br [3.5556 (10) Å] and weak Br...N [3.433 (4) Å] interactions, forming chains propagating along [110]. The crystal packing of (Z)-(1) is denser than that of (E)-(1), implying that the crystal structure realized for (Z)-(1) is more stable than that for (E)-(1).

Ganciclovir (GCV; systematic name: 2-amino-9-{[(1,3-dihydroxypropan-2-yl)oxy]methyl}-6,9-dihydro-1H-purin-6-one), C 9 H 13 N 5 O 4 , an antiviral drug for treating cytomegalovirus infections, has two known polymorphs (Forms I and II), but only the structure of the metastable Form II has been reported [Kawamura & Hirayama (2009). X-ray Struct. Anal. Online, 25, 51-52]. We describe a successful preparation of GCV Form I and its crystal structure. GCV is an achiral molecule in the sense that its individual conformers, which are generally chiral objects, undergo fast interconversion in the liquid state and cannot be isolated. In the crystalline state, GCV exists as two inversion-related conformers in Form I and as a single chiral conformer in Form II. This situation is similar to that observed for glycine, also an achiral molecule, whose α-polymorph contains two inversion-related conformers, while the γ-polymorph contains a single conformer that is chiral. The hydrogen bonds are exclusively intermolecular in Form I, but both inter- and intramolecular in Form II, which accounts for the different molecular conformations in the two polymorphs.

A complementary application of three analytical techniques, viz. multidimensional nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR), mass spectrometry (MS), and single-crystal X-ray diffractometry was required to identify and refine two natural products isolated from Millettia versicolor and solvent of crystallization. The two compounds, namely 3-(2H-1,3-benzodioxol-5-yl)-6-methoxy-8,8-dimethyl-4H,8H-pyrano[2,3-h]chromen-4-one, or durmillone, (I), and (2E)-1-(4-{[(2E)-3,7-dimethylocta-2,6-dien-1-yl]oxy}-2-hydroxyphenyl)-3-(4-hydroxyphenyl)prop-2-en-1-one, (II), could not be separated by routine column chromatography and cocrystallized in a 2:1 ratio with 0.13 molecules of ethanol solvent. Compound (II) and ethanol could not be initially identified by single-crystal X-ray analysis due to complex disorder in the aliphatic chain region of (II). Mass spectrometry ensured that (II) represented only one species disordered over several positions in the solid state, rather than several species cohabitating on the same crystallographic site. The atomic identification and connectivity in (II) were established by several 2D (two-dimensional) NMR techniques, which in turn relied on a knowledge of its exact mass. The derived connectivity was then used in the single-crystal analysis to model the disorder of the aliphatic chain in (II) over three positions and allowed identification of a partially occupied ethanol solvent molecule that was disordered over an inversion center. The disordered moieties were refined with restraints and constraints.

The steric and electronic factors that influence which of the two rings of a substituted biphenyl ligand coordinates to chromium are of interest and it has been suggested that haptotropic rearrangements within these molecules may be limited if the arene-arene dihedral angle is too large. Two tricarbonylchromium(0) complexes and their respective free ligands have been characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In the solid state, tricarbonyl[(1',2',3',4',5',6'-η)-2-fluoro-1,1'-biphenyl]chromium(0), [Cr(C 12 H 9 F)(CO) 3 ], (I), exists as the more stable isomer with the nonhalogenated arene ring ligated to the metal center. Similarly, tricarbonyl[(1',2',3',4',5',6'-η)-4-fluoro-1,1'-biphenyl]chromium(0) crystallizes as the more stable isomer with the phenyl ring bonded to the Cr 0 center. The arene-arene dihedral angles in these complexes are 55.77 (4) and 52.4 (5)°, respectively. Structural features of these complexes are compared to those of the DFT-optimized geometries of ten tricarbonyl[(η 6 -C 6 H 5 )(4-F-C 6 H 4 )]chromium model complexes. The solid-state structures of the free ligands 2-fluoro-1,1'-biphenyl and 4-fluoro-1,1'-biphenyl, both C 12 H 9 F, exhibit arene-arene dihedral angles of 54.83 (7) and 0.71 (8)°, respectively. The molecules of the free ligands occupy crystallographic twofold axes and exhibit positional disorder. Weak intermolecular C-H...F interactions are observed in all four structures.

The crystal structure and absolute configuration of a molecular host/guest/impurity inclusion complex were established unequivocally in spite of our having no prior knowledge of its chemical composition. The host (4R,5R)-4,5-bis(hydroxydiphenylmethyl)-2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxolane, (I), displays expected conformational features. The crystal-disordered chiral guest 4,4a,5,6,7,8-hexahydronaphthalen-2(3H)-one, (II), is present in the crystal 85.1 (4)% of the time. It shares a common site with 4a-hydroperoxymethyl-4,4a,5,6,7,8-hexahydronaphthalen-2(3H)-one, (III), present 14.9 (4)% of the time, which is the product of autoxidation of (II). This minor peroxide impurity was isolated, and the results of nuclear magnetic resonance, mass spectrometry, and X-ray fluorescence studies are consistent with the proposed structure of (III). The complete structure was therefore determined to be (4R,5R)-4,5-bis(hydroxydiphenylmethyl)-2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxolane-4,4a,5,6,7,8-hexahydronaphthalen-2(3H)-one-4a-hydroperoxymethyl-4,4a,5,6,7,8-hexahydronaphthalen-2(3H)-one (1/0.85/0.15), C31H30O4·0.85C10H14O·0.15C10H14O3, (IV). There are host-host, host-guest, and host-impurity hydrogen-bonding interactions of types S and D in the solid state. We believe that the crystals of (IV) were originally prepared to establish the chirality of the guest (II) by means of X-ray diffraction analysis of host/guest crystals obtained in the course of chiral resolution during cocrystallization of (II) with (I). In spite of the absence of `heavy' elements, the absolute configurations of all anomeric centres in the structure are assigned as R based on resonant scattering effects.

Three polymorphs of bis(nitrito-κN)[tris(2-aminoethyl)amine-κ(4)N,N',N'',N''']cobalt(III) chloride, [Co(NO2)2(C6H18N4)]Cl, have been structurally characterized in the 100-300 K temperature range. Two orthorhombic polymorphs are related by a solid-state enantiotropic order-disorder k2 phase transition at ca 152 K. The third, monoclinic, polymorph crystallizes as a nonmerohedral twin. In the structure of the high-temperature (300 K) orthorhombic polymorph, the Co(III) complex cation resides on a crystallographic mirror plane, whereas the Cl(-) anion occupies a crystallographic twofold axis. In the unit cell of the monoclinic polymorph, the cationic Co(III) complex is in a general position, whose charge is balanced by two halves of two Cl(-) anions, each residing on a crystallographic twofold axis.
