Abstract: Computertomography (CAT-scan) was used to examine 87 patients with a clinical differential diagnosis of a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), a torn meniscus or hemarthrosis. All joints were examined in slight flexion and no contrast medium was used. By CAT-scan the ACL was found to be intact in 44, but torn in 43 patients. These findings were monitored by arthroscopy or arthrotomy in all patients; the ligament was torn in 4/44 of the first group and found to be intact in 7/43 of the latter group. In our series CAT-scan based diagnosis of ACL injuries had a sensitivity of 90%, a specificity of 85% and an accuracy of 87%. However, CAT-scan is not regarded as a routine procedure but it can supply reliable information on the anterior cruciate ligament.
