Slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPSs) have been actively studied to improve the limitations of superhydrophobic (SHP) surfaces, especially the defects of the nonwetting chemical coating layer and the weak mechanical robustness of surface micro/nanostructures. However, the SLIPSs also have several drawbacks including volatilization and leakage of lubricant caused by long-term usage. In this study, we suggest the use of icephobic, highly transparent, and self-healing solid slippery surface to overcome the limitations of both surfaces (SLIPS and SHP) by combining specific biomimetic morphology and intrinsic properties of paraffin wax. A moth-eye mimicking nanopillar structure was prepared instead of a porous structure and was coated with solid paraffin wax for water repellence. Moth-eye structures enable high surface transparency based on antireflective effect, and the paraffin layer can recover from damage due to sunlight exposure. Furthermore, the paraffin coating on the nanopillars provides an air trap, resulting in a low heat transfer rate, increasing freezing time and reducing adhesion strength between the ice droplet and the surface. The heat transfer model was also calculated to elucidate the effects of the nanopillar height and paraffin layer thickness. The antireflection and freezing time of the surfaces are enhanced with increase in nanopillar height. The paraffin layer slightly deteriorates the transmittance but enhances the icephobicity. The solar cell efficiency using a biomimetic solid slippery surface is higher than that of bare glass due to the antireflective effect. This integrated biomimetic solid slippery surface is multifunctional due to its self-cleaning, anti-icing, antireflection, and self-healing properties and may replace SLIPS and SHP surfaces.

Surface icing affects the safety and performance of numerous processes in technology. Previous studies mostly investigated freezing of individual droplets. The interaction among multiple droplets during freezing is investigated less, especially on nanotextured icephobic surfaces, despite its practical importance as water droplets never appear in isolation, but in groups. Here we show that freezing of a supercooled droplet leads to spontaneous self-heating and induces strong vaporization. The resulting, rapidly propagating vapor front causes immediate cascading freezing of neighboring supercooled droplets upon reaching them. We put forth the explanation that, as the vapor approaches cold neighboring droplets, it can lead to local supersaturation and formation of airborne microscopic ice crystals, which act as freezing nucleation sites. The sequential triggering and propagation of this mechanism results in the rapid freezing of an entire droplet ensemble, resulting in ice coverage of the nanotextured surface. Although cascade freezing is observed in a low-pressure environment, it introduces an unexpected pathway of freezing propagation that can be crucial for the performance of rationally designed icephobic surfaces.

Ice nucleation from vapor presents a variety of challenges across a wide range of industries and applications including refrigeration, transportation, and energy generation. However, a rational comprehensive approach to fabricating intrinsically icephobic surfaces for frost formation-both from water condensation (followed by freezing) and in particular from desublimation (direct growth of ice crystals from vapor)-remains elusive. Here, guided by nucleation physics, we investigate the effect of material composition and surface texturing (atomically smooth to nanorough) on the nucleation and growth mechanism of frost for a range of conditions within the sublimation domain (0 C to -55C; partial water vapor pressures 6 to 0.02 mbar). Surprisingly, we observe that on silicon at very cold temperatures-below the homogeneous ice solidification nucleation limit (< -46 C)-desublimation does not become the favorable pathway to frosting. Furthermore we show that surface nanoroughness makes frost formation on silicon more probable. We experimentally demonstrate at temperatures between -48 C and -55 C that nanotexture with radii of curvature within one order of magnitude of the critical radius of nucleation favors frost growth, facilitated by capillary condensation, consistent with Kelvin's Equation. Our findings show that such nanoscale surface morphology imposed by design to impart desired functionalities-such as superhydrophobicity-or from defects, can be highly detrimental for frost icephobicity at low temperatures and water vapor partial pressures (< 0.05 mbar). Our work contributes to the fundamental understanding of heterogeneous phase transitions well within the equilibrium sublimation domain and has implications for applications such as travel, power generation, and refrigeration.

Self-propelled jumping drops are continuously removed from a condensing superhydrophobic surface to enable a micrometric steady-state drop size. Here, we report that subcooled condensate on a chilled superhydrophobic surface are able to repeatedly jump off the surface before heterogeneous ice nucleation occurs. Frost still forms on the superhydrophobic surface due to ice nucleation at neighboring edge defects, which eventually spreads over the entire surface via an interdrop frost wave. The growth of this interdrop frost front is shown to be up to 3 times slower on the superhydrophobic surface compared to a control hydrophobic surface, due to the jumping-drop effect dynamically minimizing the average drop size and surface coverage of the condensate. A simple scaling model is developed to relate the success and speed of interdrop ice bridging to the drop size distribution. While other reports of condensation frosting on superhydrophobic surfaces have focused exclusively on liquid-solid ice nucleation for isolated drops, these findings reveal that the growth of frost is an interdrop phenomenon that is strongly coupled to the wettability and drop size distribution of the surface. A jumping-drop superhydrophobic condenser minimized frost formation relative to a conventional dropwise condenser in two respects: preventing heterogeneous ice nucleation by continuously removing subcooled condensate, and delaying frost growth by limiting the success of interdrop ice bridge formation.

Ice-repellent coatings can have significant impact on global energy savings and improving safety in many infrastructures, transportation, and cooling systems. Recent efforts for developing ice-phobic surfaces have been mostly devoted to utilizing lotus-leaf-inspired superhydrophobic surfaces, yet these surfaces fail in high-humidity conditions due to water condensation and frost formation and even lead to increased ice adhesion due to a large surface area. We report a radically different type of ice-repellent material based on slippery, liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPS), where a stable, ultrasmooth, low-hysteresis lubricant overlayer is maintained by infusing a water-immiscible liquid into a nanostructured surface chemically functionalized to have a high affinity to the infiltrated liquid and lock it in place. We develop a direct fabrication method of SLIPS on industrially relevant metals, particularly aluminum, one of the most widely used lightweight structural materials. We demonstrate that SLIPS-coated Al surfaces not only suppress ice/frost accretion by effectively removing condensed moisture but also exhibit at least an order of magnitude lower ice adhesion than state-of-the-art materials. On the basis of a theoretical analysis followed by extensive icing/deicing experiments, we discuss special advantages of SLIPS as ice-repellent surfaces: highly reduced sliding droplet sizes resulting from the extremely low contact angle hysteresis. We show that our surfaces remain essentially frost-free in which any conventional materials accumulate ice. These results indicate that SLIPS is a promising candidate for developing robust anti-icing materials for broad applications, such as refrigeration, aviation, roofs, wires, outdoor signs, railings, and wind turbines.

Appropriately structured topographical features that are found in nature (e.g,, the lotus leaf) or that are produced synthetically (e.g., via lithography) can impart superhydrophobic properties to surfaces. Water beads up and readily rolls off of such surfaces, making them self-cleaning. Within the past few years, scientists and engineers have begun exploring the utility of these surfaces in mitigating the icing problem prevalent in the operation of critical infrastructure such as airplanes, ships, power lines, and telecommunications equipment. An article in this issue advances our fundamental knowledge in this area by examining the dynamic impact of water droplets on both smooth and topographically structured supercooled substrates. The results illustrate that, under at least some environmental conditions, superhydrophobic surfaces can minimize or even eliminate ice formation by repelling impinging water drops before they can freeze. Subsequent research will build on these results, possibly leading to the fabrication of commercially viable and durable icephobic surfaces that mitigate the icing problem under all environmental conditions.

Undesired ice accumulation leads to severe economic issues and, in some cases, loss of lives. Although research on anti-icing has been carried out for decades, environmentally harmless, economical, and efficient strategies for anti-icing remain to be developed. Recent researches have provided new insights into the icing phenomenon and shed light on some promising bio-inspired anti-icing strategies. The present review critically categorizes and discusses recent developments. Effectively trapping air in surface textures of superhydrophobic surfaces weakens the interaction of the surfaces with liquid water, which enables timely removal of impacting and condensed water droplets before freezing occurs. When ice already forms, ice adhesion can be significantly reduced if liquid is trapped in surface textures as a lubricating layer. As such, ice could be shed off by an action of wind or its gravity. In addition, bio-inspired anti-icing strategies via trapping or introducing other media, such as phase change materials and antifreeze proteins, are discussed.

We discuss mechanical forces that act upon a water droplet and a piece of ice on a rough solid surface and the difference between dewetting and ice fracture. The force needed to detach a water droplet depends on contact angle (CA) hysteresis and can be reduced significantly in the case of a superhydrophobic surface. The force needed to detach a piece of ice depends on the receding CA and the initial size of interfacial cracks. Therefore, even surfaces with very high receding CA may have strong adhesion to ice if the size of the cracks is small.
