Understanding the catalytic mechanism of highly active two-dimensional electrocatalysts is crucial to their rational design. Herein, we reveal the element dependence of the reactivity of two-dimensional metal dichalcogenide sheets for electrocatalytic CO 2 reduction. We found that tin(IV) disulfide (SnS 2 ) and molybdenum(IV) disulfide (MoS 2 ) sheets exhibited Faradaic efficiencies of 63.3% and ∼0%, respectively, for formic acid. Scanning electrochemical cell microscopy and theoretical calculations were used to identify the catalytically active sites of SnS 2 as terraces and edges. Owing to the effective utilization of the entire surface area, SnS 2 can effectively accelerate catalytic reactions. This finding provides a direction for material research in two-dimensional electrocatalysts for energy-efficient chemical production from electrochemical CO 2 reduction, as well as for other energy devices.

We report Raman and photoluminescence spectra of mono- and few-layer WSe2 and MoSe2 taken before and after exposure to a remote oxygen plasma. For bilayer and trilayer WSe2, we observe an increase in the photoluminescence intensity and a blue shift of the photoluminescence peak positions after oxygen plasma treatment. The photoluminescence spectra of trilayer WSe2 exhibit features of a bilayer after oxygen plasma treatment. Bilayer WSe2 exhibits features of a monolayer, and the photoluminescence of monolayer WSe2 is completely absent after the oxygen plasma treatment. These changes are observed consistently in more than 20 flakes. The mechanism of the changes observed in the photoluminescence spectra of WSe2 is due to the selective oxidation of the topmost layer. As a result, N-layer WSe2 is reduced to N-1 layers. Raman spectra and AFM images taken from the WSe2 flakes before and after the oxygen treatment corroborate these findings. Because of the low kinetic energy of the oxygen radicals in the remote oxygen plasma, the oxidation is self-limiting. By varying the process duration from 1 to 10 min, we confirmed that the oxidation will only affect the topmost layer of the WSe2 flakes. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy shows that the surface layer WOx of the sample can be removed by a quick dip in KOH solution. Therefore, this technique provides a promising way of controlling the thickness of WSe2 layer by layer.

Phase transitions and phase engineering in two-dimensional MoS2 are important for applications in electronics and energy storage. By in situ transmission electron microscopy, we find that H-MoS2 transforms to T-LiMoS2 at the early stages of lithiation followed by the formation of Mo and Li2S phases. The transition from H-MoS2 to T-LiMoS2 is explained in terms of electron doping and electron-phonon coupling at the conduction band minima. Both are essential for the development of two-dimensional semiconductor-metal contacts based on MoS2 and the usage of MoS2 as anode material in Li ion batteries.
