Halide perovskites have many important optoelectronic properties, including high emission efficiency, high absorption coefficients, color purity, and tunable emission wavelength, which makes these materials promising for optoelectronic applications. However, the inability to precisely control large-scale patterned growth of halide perovskites limits their potential toward various device applications. Here, we report a patterning method for the growth of a cesium lead halide perovskite single crystal array. Our approach consists of two steps: (1) cesium halide salt arrays patterning and (2) chemical vapor transport process to convert salt arrays into single crystal perovskite arrays. Characterizations including energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and photoluminescence have been employed to confirm the chemical compositions and the optical properties of the as-synthesized perovskite arrays. This patterning method enables the patterning of single crystal cesium lead halide perovskite arrays with tunable spacing (from 2 to 20 μm) and crystal size (from 200 nm to 1.2 μm) in high production yield (almost every pixel in the array is successfully grown with converted perovskite crystals). Our large-scale patterning method renders a platform for the study of fundamental properties and opportunities for perovskite-based optoelectronic applications.

Incorporating magnetism into two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures is crucial for the development of functional electronic and magnetic devices. Here, we show that Nb 3 X 8 (X = Cl, Br) is a family of 2D layered trimerized kagomé magnets that are paramagnetic at high temperatures and undergo a first-order phase transition on cooling to a singlet magnetic state. X-ray diffraction shows that a rearrangement of the vdW stacking accompanies the magnetic transition, with high- and low-temperature phases consistent with scanning transmission electron microscopy images of the end members α-Nb 3 Cl 8 and β-Nb 3 Br 8 . The temperature of this transition is systematically varied across the solid solution Nb 3 Cl 8- x Br x ( x = 0-8), with x = 6 having transitions near room temperature. The solid solution also varies the optical properties, which are further modulated by the phase transition. As such, they provide a platform on which to understand and exploit the interplay between dimensionality, magnetism, and optoelectronic behavior in vdW materials.

Graphene-like two-dimensional (2D) nanostructures have attracted significant attention because of their unique quantum confinement effect at the 2D limit. Multilayer nanosheets of GaS-GaSe alloy are found to have a band gap (Eg) of 2.0-2.5 eV that linearly tunes the emission in red-to-green. However, the epitaxial growth of monolayers produces a drastic increase in this Eg to 3.3-3.4 eV, which blue-shifts the emission to the UV region. First-principles calculations predict that the Eg of these GaS and GaSe monolayers should be 3.325 and 3.001 eV, respectively. As the number of layers is increased to three, both the direct/indirect Eg decrease significantly; the indirect Eg approaches that of the multilayers. Oxygen adsorption can cause the direct/indirect Eg of GaS to converge, resulting in monolayers with a strong emission. This wide Eg tuning over the visible-to-UV range could provide an insight for the realization of full-colored flexible and transparent light emitters and displays.
