The synchronization of the electrical and mechanical coupling assures the physiological pump function of the heart, but life-threatening pathologies may jeopardize this equilibrium. Recently, human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes (hiPSC-CMs) have emerged as a model for personalized investigation because they can recapitulate human diseased traits, such as compromised electrical capacity or mechanical circuit disruption. This research avails the model of hiPSC-CMs and showcases innovative techniques to study the electrical and mechanical properties as well as their modulation due to inherited cardiomyopathies. In this work, hiPSC-CMs carrying either Brugada syndrome (BRU) or dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), were organized in a bilayer configuration to first validate the experimental methods and second mimic the physiological environment. High-density CMOS-based microelectrode arrays (HD-MEA) have been employed to study the electrical activity. Furthermore, mechanical function was investigated via quantitative video-based evaluation, upon stimulation with a β-adrenergic agonist. This study introduces two experimental methods. First, high-throughput mechanical measurements in the hiPSC-CM layers (xy-inspection) are obtained using both a recently developed optical tracker (OPT) and confocal reference-free traction force microscopy (cTFM) aimed to quantify cardiac kinematics. Second, atomic force microscopy (AFM) with FluidFM probes, combined with the xy-inspection methods, supplemented a three-dimensional understanding of cell-cell mechanical coupling (xyz-inspection). This particular combination represents a multi-technique approach to detecting electrical and mechanical latency among the cell layers, examining differences and possible implications following inherited cardiomyopathies. It can not only detect disease characteristics in the proposed in vitro model but also quantitatively assess its response to drugs, thereby demonstrating its feasibility as a scalable tool for clinical and pharmacological studies.

We perform laser spectroscopy at liquid helium temperatures ( T = 2 K) to investigate single dibenzoterrylene (DBT) molecules doped in anthracene crystals of nanoscopic height fabricated by electrohydrodynamic dripping. Using high-resolution fluorescence excitation spectroscopy, we show that zero-phonon lines of single molecules in printed nanocrystals are nearly as narrow as the Fourier-limited transitions observed for the same guest-host system in the bulk. Moreover, the spectral instabilities are comparable to or less than one line width. By recording super-resolution images of DBT molecules and varying the polarization of the excitation beam, we determine the dimensions of the printed crystals and the orientation of the crystals' axes. Electrohydrodynamic printing of organic nano- and microcrystals is of interest for a series of applications, where controlled positioning of quantum emitters with narrow optical transitions is desirable.

Lubricant-infused surfaces (LIS) are highly efficient in repelling water and constitute a very promising family of materials for condensation processes occurring in a broad range of energy applications. However, the performance of LIS in such processes is limited by the inherent thermal resistance imposed by the thickness of the lubricant and supporting surface structure, as well as by the gradual depletion of the lubricant over time. Here, we present an ultrathin (∼70 nm) and conductive LIS architecture, obtained by infusing lubricant into a vertically grown graphene nanoscaffold on copper. The ultrathin nature of the scaffold, combined with the high in-plane thermal conductivity of graphene, drastically minimize earlier limitations, effectively doubling the heat transfer performance compared to a state-of-the-art CuO LIS surface. We show that the effect of the thermal resistance to the heat transfer performance of a LIS surface, although often overlooked, can be so detrimental that a simple nanostructured CuO surface can outperform a CuO LIS surface, despite filmwise condensation on the former. The present vertical graphene LIS is also found to be resistant to lubricant depletion, maintaining stable dropwise condensation for at least 24 h with no significant change of advancing contact angle and contact angle hysteresis. The lubricant consumed by the vertical graphene LIS is 52.6% less than that of the existing state-of-the-art CuO LIS, also making the fabrication process more economical.

Liquid transport (continuous or segmented) in microfluidic platforms typically requires pumping devices or external fields working collaboratively with special fluid properties to enable fluid motion. Natural liquid adhesion on surfaces deters motion and promotes the possibility of liquid or surface contamination. Despite progress, significant advancements are needed before devices for passive liquid propulsion, without the input of external energy and unwanted contamination, become a reality in applications. Here we present an unexplored and facile approach based on the Laplace pressure imbalance, manifesting itself through targeted track texturing, driving passively droplet motion, while maintaining the limited contact of the Cassie-Baxter state on superhydrophobic surfaces. The track topography resembles out-of-plane, backgammon-board, slowly converging microridges decorated with nanotexturing. This design naturally deforms asymmetrically the menisci formed at the bottom of a droplet contacting such tracks and causes a Laplace pressure imbalance that drives droplet motion. We investigate this effect over a range of opening track angles and develop a model to explain and quantify the underlying mechanism of droplet self-propulsion. We further implement the developed topography for applications relevant to microfluidic platform functionalities. We demonstrate control of the rebound angle of vertically impacting droplets, achieve horizontal self-transport to distances up to 65 times the droplet diameter, show significant uphill motion against gravity, and illustrate a self-driven droplet-merging process.

Imparting and maintaining surface superhydrophobicity has been receiving significant research attention over the last several years, driven by a broad range of important applications and enabled by advancements in materials and surface nanoengineering. Researchers have investigated the effect of temperature on droplet-surface interactions, which poses additional challenges when liquid nucleation manifests itself, due to ensuing condensation into the surface texture that compromises its antiwetting behavior. Maintaining surface transparency at the same time poses an additional and significant challenge. Often, the solutions proposed are limited by working temperatures or are detrimental to visibility through the surface. Here we introduce a scalable method employing plasmonic photothermal metasurface composites, able to harvest sunlight and naturally heat the surface, sustaining water repellency and transparency under challenging environmental conditions where condensation and fogging would otherwise be strongly promoted. We demonstrate that these surfaces, when illuminated by sunlight, can prevent impalement of impacting water droplets, even when the droplet to surface temperature difference is 50 °C, by suppressing condensate formation within the texture, maintaining transparency. We also show how the same transparent metasurface coating could be combined and work collaboratively with hierarchical micro- and nanorough textures, resulting in simultaneous superior pressure-driven impalement resistance and avoidance of water nucleation and related possible frosting in supercooled conditions. Our work can find a host of applications as a sustainable solution against impacting water on surfaces such as windows, eyewear, and optical components.

The ability of mixing colors with remarkable results had long been exclusive to the talents of master painters. By finely combining colors in different amounts on the palette, intuitively, they obtain smooth gradients with any given color. Creating such smooth color variations through scattering by the structural patterning of a surface, as opposed to color pigments, has long remained a challenge. Here, we borrow from the painter's approach and demonstrate color mixing generated by an optical metasurface. We propose a single-layer plasmonic color pixel and a method for nanophotonic structural color mixing based on the additive red-green-blue (RGB) color model. The color pixels consist of plasmonic nanorod arrays that generate vivid primary colors and enable independent control of color brightness without affecting chromaticity by simply varying geometric in-plane parameters. By interleaving different nanorod arrays, we combine up to three primary colors on a single pixel. Based on this, two- and three-color mixing is demonstrated, enabling the continuous coverage of a plasmonic RGB color gamut and yielding a palette with a virtually unlimited number of colors. With this multiresonant color pixel, we show the photorealistic printing of color and monochrome images at the nanoscale, with ultrasmooth transitions in color and brightness. Our color-mixing approach can be applied to a broad range of scatterer designs and materials and has the potential to be used for multiwavelength color filters and dynamic photorealistic displays.

Energy transfer allows energy to be moved from one quantum emitter to another. If this process follows the Förster mechanism, efficient transfer requires the emitters to be extremely close (<10 nm). To increase the transfer range, nanophotonic structures have been explored for photon- or plasmon-mediated energy transfer. Here, we fabricate high-quality silver plasmonic resonators to examine long-distance plasmon-mediated energy transfer. Specifically, we design elliptical resonators that allow energy transfer between the foci, which are separated by up to 10 μm. The geometry of the ellipse guarantees that all plasmons emitted from one focus are collected and channeled through different paths to the other focus. Thus, energy can be transferred even if a micrometer-sized defect obstructs the direct path between the focal points. We characterize the spectral and spatial profiles of the resonator modes and show that these can be used to transfer energy between green- and red-emitting colloidal quantum dots printed with subwavelength accuracy using electrohydrodynamic nanodripping. Rate-equation modeling of the time-resolved fluorescence from the quantum dots further confirms the long-distance energy transfer.

Surface icing affects the safety and performance of numerous processes in technology. Previous studies mostly investigated freezing of individual droplets. The interaction among multiple droplets during freezing is investigated less, especially on nanotextured icephobic surfaces, despite its practical importance as water droplets never appear in isolation, but in groups. Here we show that freezing of a supercooled droplet leads to spontaneous self-heating and induces strong vaporization. The resulting, rapidly propagating vapor front causes immediate cascading freezing of neighboring supercooled droplets upon reaching them. We put forth the explanation that, as the vapor approaches cold neighboring droplets, it can lead to local supersaturation and formation of airborne microscopic ice crystals, which act as freezing nucleation sites. The sequential triggering and propagation of this mechanism results in the rapid freezing of an entire droplet ensemble, resulting in ice coverage of the nanotextured surface. Although cascade freezing is observed in a low-pressure environment, it introduces an unexpected pathway of freezing propagation that can be crucial for the performance of rationally designed icephobic surfaces.

Ice nucleation from vapor presents a variety of challenges across a wide range of industries and applications including refrigeration, transportation, and energy generation. However, a rational comprehensive approach to fabricating intrinsically icephobic surfaces for frost formation-both from water condensation (followed by freezing) and in particular from desublimation (direct growth of ice crystals from vapor)-remains elusive. Here, guided by nucleation physics, we investigate the effect of material composition and surface texturing (atomically smooth to nanorough) on the nucleation and growth mechanism of frost for a range of conditions within the sublimation domain (0 °C to -55 °C; partial water vapor pressures 6 to 0.02 mbar). Surprisingly, we observe that on silicon at very cold temperatures-below the homogeneous ice solidification nucleation limit (<-46 °C)-desublimation does not become the favorable pathway to frosting. Furthermore, we show that surface nanoroughness makes frost formation on silicon more probable. We experimentally demonstrate at temperatures between -48 °C and -55 °C that nanotexture with radii of curvature within 1 order of magnitude of the critical radius of nucleation favors frost growth, facilitated by capillary condensation, consistent with Kelvin's equation. Our findings show that such nanoscale surface morphology imposed by design to impart desired functionalities-such as superhydrophobicity-or from defects can be highly detrimental for frost icephobicity at low temperatures and water vapor partial pressures (<0.05 mbar). Our work contributes to the fundamental understanding of phase transitions well within the equilibrium sublimation domain and has implications for applications such as travel, power generation, and refrigeration.

Inhibiting ice accumulation on surfaces is an energy-intensive task and is of significant importance in nature and technology where it has found applications in windshields, automobiles, aviation, renewable energy generation, and infrastructure. Existing methods rely on on-site electrical heat generation, chemicals, or mechanical removal, with drawbacks ranging from financial costs to disruptive technical interventions and environmental incompatibility. Here we focus on applications where surface transparency is desirable and propose metasurfaces with embedded plasmonically enhanced light absorption heating, using ultrathin hybrid metal-dielectric coatings, as a passive, viable approach for de-icing and anti-icing, in which the sole heat source is renewable solar energy. The balancing of transparency and absorption is achieved with rationally nanoengineered coatings consisting of gold nanoparticle inclusions in a dielectric (titanium dioxide), concentrating broadband absorbed solar energy into a small volume. This causes a > 10 °C temperature increase with respect to ambient at the air-solid interface, where ice is most likely to form, delaying freezing, reducing ice adhesion, when it occurs, to negligible levels (de-icing) and inhibiting frost formation (anti-icing). Our results illustrate an effective unexplored pathway toward environmentally compatible, solar-energy-driven icephobicity, enabled by respectively tailored plasmonic metasurfaces, with the ability to design the balance of transparency and light absorption.

Dropwise condensation is a phenomenon of common occurrence in everyday life, the understanding and controlling of which is of great interest to applications ranging from technology to nature. Scalable superhydrophobic textures on metals are of direct relevance in improving phase change heat transport in realistic industrial applications. Here we reveal important facets of individual droplet growth rate and droplet departure during dropwise condensation on randomly structured hierarchical superhydrophobic aluminum textures, that is, surfaces with a microstructure consisting of irregular re-entrant microcavities and an overlaying nanostructure. We demonstrate that precoalescence droplet growth on such a surface can span a broad range of rates even when the condensation conditions are held constant. The fastest growth rates are observed to be more than 4 times faster as compared to the slowest growing droplets. We show that this variation in droplet growth on the hierarchical texture is primarily controlled by droplet growth dynamics on the nanostructure overlaying the microstructure and is caused by condensation-induced localized wetting nonuniformity on the nanostructure. We also show that the droplets nucleating and growing within the microcavities are able to spontaneously navigate the irregular microcavity geometry, climb the microtexture, and finally depart from the surface by coalescence-induced jumping. This self-navigation is realized by a synergistic combination of self-orienting Laplace pressure gradients induced within the droplet as it dislodges itself and moves through the texture, as well as multidroplet coalescence.

Metastatic progression of tumors requires the coordinated dissemination of cancerous cells through interstitial tissues and their replication in distant body locations. Despite their importance in cancer treatment decisions, key factors, such as cell shape adaptation and the role it plays in dense tissue invasion by cancerous cells, are not well understood. Here, we employ a 3D electrohydrodynamic nanoprinting technology to generate vertical arrays of topographical pores that mimic interstitial tissue resistance to the mesenchymal migration of cancerous cells, in order to determine the effect of nuclear size, cell deformability, and cell-to-substrate adhesion on tissue invasion efficiency. The high spatial and temporal resolution of our analysis demonstrates that the ability of cells to deform depends on the cell cycle phase, peaks immediately after mitosis, and is key to the invasion process. Increased pore penetration efficiency by cells in early G1 phase also coincided with their lower nuclear volume and higher cell deformability, compared with the later cell cycle stages. Furthermore, artificial decondensation of chromatin induced an increase in cell and nuclear deformability and improved pore penetration efficiency of cells in G1. Together, these results underline that along the cell cycle cells have different abilities to dynamically remodel their actin cytoskeleton and induce nuclear shape changes, which determines their pore penetration efficiency. Thus, our results support a mechanism in which cell proliferation and pore penetration are functionally linked to favor the interstitial dissemination of metastatic cells.

A powerful replica molding methodology to transfer on-demand functional topographies to the surface of bacterial cellulose nanofiber textures is presented. With this method, termed guided assembly-based biolithography (GAB), a surface-structured polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) mold is introduced at the gas-liquid interface of an Acetobacter xylinum culture. Upon bacterial fermentation, the generated bacterial cellulose nanofibers are assembled in a three-dimensional network reproducing the geometric shape imposed by the mold. Additionally, GAB yields directional alignment of individual nanofibers and memory of the transferred geometrical features upon dehydration and rehydration of the substrates. Scanning electron and atomic force microscopy are used to establish the good fidelity of this facile and affordable method. Interaction of surface-structured bacterial cellulose substrates with human fibroblasts and keratinocytes illustrates the efficient control of cellular activities which are fundamental in skin wound healing and tissue regeneration. The deployment of surface-structured bacterial cellulose substrates in model animals as skin wound dressing or body implant further proves the high durability and low inflammatory response to the material over a period of 21 days, demonstrating beneficial effects of surface structure on skin regeneration.

Nanophosphors are light-emitting materials with stable optical properties that represent promising tools for bioimaging. The synthesis of nanophosphors, and thus the control of their surface properties, is, however, challenging. Here, flame aerosol technology is exploited to generate Tb-activated Y(2)O(3) nanophosphors (∼25 nm) encapsulated in situ by a nanothin amorphous inert SiO(2) film. The nanocrystalline core exhibits a bright green luminescence following the Tb(3+) ion transitions, while the hermetic SiO(2)-coating prevents any unspecific interference with cellular activities. The SiO(2)-coated nanophosphors display minimal photobleaching upon imaging and can be easily functionalized through surface absorption of biological molecules. Therefore, they can be used as bionanoprobes for cell detection and for long-term monitoring of cellular activities. As an example, we report on the interaction between epidermal growth factor (EGF)-functionalized nanophosphors and mouse melanoma cells. The cellular uptake of the nanophosphors is visualized with confocal microscopy, and the specific activation of EGF receptors is revealed with biochemical techniques. Altogether, our results establish SiO(2)-coated Tb-activated Y(2)O(3) nanophosphors as superior imaging tools for biological applications.
