Crystalline nanoporous molecular networks are assembled on the Ag(111) surface, where the pores confine electrons originating from the surface state of the metal. Depending on the pore sizes and their coupling, an antibonding level is shifted upwards by 0.1 to 0.3 eV as measured by scanning tunneling microscopy. On molecular sites, a down-shifted bonding state is observed, which is occupied under equilibrium conditions. Low-temperature force spectroscopy reveals energy dissipation peaks and jumps of frequency shifts at bias voltages, which are related to the confined states. The dissipation maps show delocalization on the supra-molecular assembly and a weak distance-dependence of the dissipation peaks. These observations indicate that two-dimensional arrays of coupled quantum dots are formed, which are quantitatively characterized by their quantum capacitances and resonant tunneling rates. Solution-synthesized graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) facilitate various interesting structures and functionalities, like nonplanarity and thermolabile functional groups, that are not or not easily accessible by on-surface synthesis. Here, we show the successful high-vacuum electrospray deposition (HVESD) of well-elongated solution-synthesized GNRs on surfaces maintained in ultrahigh vacuum. We compare three distinct GNRs, a twisted nonplanar fjord-edged GNR, a methoxy-functionalized "cove"-type (or also called gulf) GNR, and a longer "cove"-type GNR both equipped with alkyl chains on Au(111). Nc-AFM measurements at room temperature with submolecular imaging combined with Raman spectroscopy allow us to characterize individual GNRs and confirm their chemical integrity. On-surface chemical reaction has become a very powerful technique to conjugate small precursor molecules and several reactions have been proposed with the aim to fabricate functional nanostructures on surfaces. Here we present an unforeseen adsorption mode of 9,10-bis-((trimethylsilyl)ethynyl)anthracene on a Cu(111)surface and the resulting one-shot desilylative homocoupling of of the adsorbate by annealing at 400 K. With a combination of high-resolution atomic force microscopy and density functional theory calculations, we found that the triple bonds and silicon atoms of the monomer chemically interact with the copper surface. After the oligomerization, we discovered that the anthracene units are linked to each other via buta-1,3-diynediyl fragments while keeping the surface clean. Furthermore, the force measurement revealed the chemical nature at the center of anthracene unit.

openaire: EC/FP7/610446/EU//PAMS According to Hückel theory, an anti-aromatic molecule possessing (4n)π-electrons becomes unstable. Although the stabilization has been demonstrated by radialene-type structures - fusing aromatic rings to anti-aromatic rings - in solution, such molecules have never been studied at a single molecular level. Here, we synthesize a cyclobutadiene derivative, dibenzo[b,h]biphenylene, by an on-surface intramolecular reaction. With a combination of high-resolution atomic force microscopy and density functional theory calculations, we found that a radialene structure significantly reduces the anti-aromaticity of the cyclobutadiene core, extracting π-electrons, while the small four-membered cyclic structure keeps a high density of the total charge.

Graphene was synthesized from pentacenequinone molecules on a Cu(111) surface using a three-step thermal treatment process: (1) self-assembly of a single layer molecular film at 190 °C, (2) formation of covalent bonding between adjacent molecules at intermediate temperatures, (3) thermal dehydrogenation and in-plane carbon diffusion at 600 °C. Transformation of the surface conformation was monitored with bimodal atomic force microscopy at the atomic scale and was corroborated with core-level X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. A strong C═O···H-C hydrogen bonding involving the quinone moiety plays a key role in graphene growth, whereas conventional pentacene simply desorbs from the substrate during the same process. The most significant achievement of this proposed technique is obtaining graphene a couple of hundred degrees lower than standard techniques. Intrinsic defects due to carbon deficiency and the defects intentionally introduced by the microscope tip were also investigated with atomic-scale imaging.

State-of-the art experimental techniques such as scanning tunneling microscopy have great difficulties in extracting detailed structural information about molecules adsorbed on surfaces. By combining atomic force microscopy and Kelvin probe force microscopy with ab initio calculations, we demonstrate that we can obtain a wealth of detailed structural information about the molecule itself and its environment. Studying an FFPB molecule on a gold surface, we are able to determine its exact location on the surface, the nature of its bonding properties with neighboring molecules that lead to the growth of one-dimensional strips, and the internal torsions and bendings of the molecule.

The low-temperature mechanical response of a single porphyrin molecule attached to the apex of an atomic force microscope (AFM) tip during vertical and lateral manipulations is studied. We find that approach-retraction cycles as well as surface scanning with the terminated tip result in atomic-scale friction patterns induced by the internal reorientations of the molecule. With a joint experimental and computational effort, we identify the dicyanophenyl side groups of the molecule interacting with the surface as the dominant factor determining the observed frictional behavior. To this end, we developed a generalized Prandtl-Tomlinson model parametrized using density functional theory calculations that includes the internal degrees of freedom of the side group with respect to the core and its interactions with the underlying surface. We demonstrate that the friction pattern results from the variations of the bond length and bond angles between the dicyanophenyl side group and the porphyrin backbone as well as those of the CN group facing the surface during the lateral and vertical motion of the AFM tip.

In this work, the mechanical properties of C(60) molecules adsorbed on Cu(111) are measured by tuning-fork-based noncontact atomic force microscopy (nc-AFM) and spectroscopy at cryogenic conditions. Site-specific tip-sample force variations are detected above the buckyball structure. Moreover, high-resolution images obtained by nc-AFM show the chemical structure of this molecule and describes unambiguously its orientations on the surface.

Halogen bonding is a noncovalent interaction where an electrophilic cap on a halogen atom, the so-called σ-hole, attracts a nucleophilic site on an adjacent molecule. The polarizability of halogens relates to the strength of the σ-hole, and accordingly the halogen-halogen distance becomes shorter in the order of Cl, Br, and I. Fully fluoro-substituted aromatic molecules, on the contrary, are generally believed not to form halogen bonds due to the absence of a σ-hole. Here, we study atomic-scale in-plane F-F contacts with high-resolution force microscopy. Our ab initio calculations show that the attractive dispersion forces can overcome the electrostatic repulsion between the fluorine atoms, while the anisotropic distribution of the negative electrostatic potential leads the directional bond and even changes the gap. The coexistence of these two competing forces results in the formation of a "windmill" structure, containing three C-F···F bonds among neighboring molecules. While the σ-hole is absent, the scheme of the C-F···F bonding has a high similarity to halogen bonding.

Directed molecular repositioning is a key step toward the build up of molecular machines. To artificially generate and control the motion of molecules on a surface, excitations by light, chemical, or electrical energy have been demonstrated. Here, the application of local mechanical forces is implemented to achieve directed rotations of molecules. Three-dimensional force spectroscopy with sub-Ångström precision is used to characterize porphyrin derivatives with peripheral carbonitrile groups. Extremely small areas on these molecules (≈ 100 × 100 pm(2)) are revealed which can be used to control rotations. In response to the local mechanical forces, the molecular structure elastically deforms and then changes its conformation, which leads to its rotation. Depending on the selection of one of four submolecular areas, the molecule is either rotated clockwise or counterclockwise.
