Upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) and MnO

Lanthanide-ion-doped upconversion materials have been widely used in biological detection, bioimaging, displays, and anticounterfeiting due to their abilities of real-time readings, high spatial resolution, and deep tissue penetration. The typically long fluorescence lifetimes of rare-earth nanoparticles, in the microsecond to millisecond range, make them useful in interference-free lifetime detection imaging. Most detection systems are accompanied by fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET), in which the lifetime of the luminescence center can be used as a signal to reveal the degree of FRET. Due to the complex energy level structure and complex energy transfer processes, the apparent lifetimes of upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) do not simply equal the decay time of the corresponding energy level, inducing an insignificant lifetime change in the upconversion detection system. Stimuli-responsive luminescent materials with time-dependent color are highly desirable in optical information encryption. In this study, multiple time-dependent color processes are achieved by light-responsive afterglow materials through the strategy of absorption compensation. Based on the single-emission band of light-responsive afterglow materials, the color of samples could show a time-dependent change from colored to colorless over several seconds. The strategy possesses high flexibility such that the stimulus light and emission color of light-responsive afterglow materials can be adjusted conveniently to adapt to various scenes. It is also beneficial to expand the capacity and complexity of information encryption. A three-color, time-resolved anticounterfeiting, and data encryption mode is demonstrated. This facile absorption compensation method based on light-response afterglow materials may promote the development of advanced dynamic information encryption.

It is very challenging to probe the temperature in a nanoscale because of the lack of detection technique. Temperature-sensitive luminescent probes at a nanoscale provide the possibility to solve this problem. Herein, we fabricated a model, which combined two kinds of temperature sensitive nanoprobes and gold nanoparticle heater within mesoporous silica nanoparticles. Upconverting nanoparticles and quantum dots located at different positions inside 110 nm nanoparticles reported different temperatures when the gold nanoparticles generated heat by 532 nm laser irradiation. The temperature difference between two probes with an average distance of 55 nm can reach about 30 °C. Our results prove that the temperature distribution at a nanoscale can be measured, and it will be noteworthy if a nano-heater is applied.

To circumvent the defects of different bioimaging techniques, the development of multifunctional probes for multimodality bioimaging is required. In the present study, a lanthanide-based core-shell-shell nanocomposite NaYbF4:Tm@CaF2@NaDyF4 composed of an ∼9.5 nm NaYbF4:Tm nanocrystal as the core, ∼2 nm CaF2 as the middle layer, and 1-2 nm NaDyF4 as the outermost shell was designed and synthesized. Following surface modification with the ligand, citrate acid, this nanocomposite was hydrophilic, emitted intense upconversion luminescence (UCL), and displayed a high X-ray computed tomography (CT) value of ∼490 Hounsfield units (HU) and excellent r2 relaxivity of 41.1 mM(-1) s(-1). These results confirmed that the introduction of a middle CaF2 layer was necessary as a barrier to reduce cross-relaxation and the surface quenching effect, thus enhancing the upconversion emission of Tm(3+). This citrate-modified NaYbF4:Tm@CaF2@NaDyF4 nanocomposite was used as a multifunctional contrast agent for trimodal lymphatic bioimaging with T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), CT, and UCL imaging. The concept of fabricating a core-multishell nanostructure and the introduction of a Dy(3+)-based host as an outer layer is a useful strategy and can be used to develop a novel multifunctional nanoprobe for multimodality bioimaging.

Nanoscale drug delivery systems have been widely investigated due to their well-recognized advantages including controlled delivery of chemotherapeutic agents, enhanced therapeutic effectiveness, and reduced adverse effects compared to conventional chemotherapy with small molecules. However, further progress in the use of nanoscale delivery systems in clinical applications has been hampered by pharmacokinetic studies in biological samples which were associated with significant experimental challenges. Here, we report a rational ratiometric approach to monitor drug release kinetics by quantitatively investigating luminescence resonance energy transfer (LRET) from upconversion nanoparticles to the antitumor drug doxorubicin (DOX). Specifically, DOX molecules within the shell of mesoporous silica-coated upconversion nanoparticles selectively quenched the green emission of upconversion nanoparticles, while the intensity of red emission was essentially unaltered. Consequently, when DOX was gradually released, a steady recovery of green emission was observed. The ability to monitor the intensity ratio of green-to-red luminescence enabled a rational design for real-time investigation of drug delivery release kinetics. Importantly, the internal standard effect of red emission made this ratiometric approach suitable for complex biological microenvironments.

This paper presents a “one-pot” procedure to synthesize polystyrene/(rare-earth-doped nanoparticles) (PS/REDNPs) hybrid hollow spheres via the in situ diffusion of organic core into inorganic shell under strong capillary force. In this approach, when carboxyl-capped PS colloids were deposited by different REDNPs in aqueous medium, such as LaF3:Eu3+, LaF3:Ce3+-Tb3+, and YVO4:Dy3+, PS/REDNPs inorganic−organic hybrid hollow spheres could be directly obtained via the in situ diffusion of core PS chains into the voids between rare-earth-doped nanoparticles through the strong capillary force. Not only is the synthetic procedure versatile and very simple, but also the obtained hybrid hollow spheres are hydrophilic and luminescent and could be directly used in chemical and biological fields.
