Metallic 1T phase molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) is among the most promising electrode materials for supercapacitors, but its capacitance and cyclability remain to be improved to meet the constantly increasing energy storage needs in portable electronics. In this study, we present a strategy, covalent functionalization, which achieves the improvement of capacitance of metallic 1T phase MoS 2 . Covalently functionalized by the modifier 4-bromobenzenediazonium tetrafluoroborate, the metallic MoS 2 membrane exhibits increased interlayer spacing, slightly curled layered architecture, enhanced charge transfer, and improved adsorption capabilities toward electrolyte molecules and ions. Thanks to these boosted properties, the functionalized metallic MoS 2 membrane exhibited excellent supercapacitor performances in a 0.5 M TBABF 4 (acetonitrile as the solvent) electrolyte (with a specific capacitance of 135.67 F/cm 3 at 1 A/g, more than three times that of the unfunctionalized metallic MoS 2 membrane) and good stability, which can maintain a capacitance retention of 76.0% after 10 000 charge-discharge cycles.

Photothermal therapy (PTT) and photodynamic therapy (PDT) provide targeted approaches to cancer treatment, but each therapy has inherent limitations such as insufficient tissue penetration, uneven heat distribution, extreme hypoxia, and overexpressed HSP90 in tumor cells. To address these issues, herein, by encapsulating the IR780 dye and glucose oxidase (GOx) enzyme within ZIF-8 nanoparticles, we created a versatile system capable of combining photodynamic and enhanced photothermal therapy. The integration of the IR780 dye facilitated the generation of reactive oxygen species and hyperthermia upon light activation, enabling dual-mode cancer cell ablation. Moreover, GOx catalyzes the decomposition of glucose into gluconic acid and hydrogen peroxide, leading to the inhibition of ATP production and downregulation of heat shock protein 90 (HSP90) expression, sensitizing cancer cells to heat-induced cytotoxicity. This synergistic combination resulted in significantly improved therapeutic outcomes. Both in vitro and in vivo results validated that the nanoplatform demonstrated superior specificity and favorable therapeutic responses. Our innovative approach represents a promising strategy for overcoming current limitations in cancer treatments and offers the potential for clinical translation in the future.

Osteoarthritis treatment remains a significant clinical challenge. Quercetin, a natural flavonoid with anti-inflammatory and antiapoptotic properties, might be utilized to treat OA. However, poor water solubility and short joint retention duration limit its bioavailability and translation to clinical applications. A one-step self-assembly method was utilized to fabricate quercetin-loaded zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (Qu@ZIF-8) nanoparticles using zinc ions, 2-methylimidazole, and quercetin. In vitro tests showed that Qu@ZIF-8 nanoparticles released pH-responsive agents into chondrocytes, effectively protecting them from interleukin (IL)-induced inflammation and apoptosis, thereby promoting cartilage anabolic activities. These underlying mechanisms revealed a remarkable increase of autophagy in IL-β-treated chondrocytes, followed by the inhibition of the Pi3k/Akt signaling pathway, which contributed to the protective effect of Qu @ZIF-8. By the establishment of medial meniscus instability (DMM) in OA mice, Qu@ZIF-8 substantially improved cartilage structural integrity and chondrocyte status, as well as attenuated OA progression. Importantly, Qu@ZIF-8 outperformed quercetin alone in the treatment of OA due to its control release. The combined research findings indicate that Qu@ZIF-8 shields chondrocytes from inflammation and apoptosis by activating autophagy and repressing the Pi3k/Akt pathway. This investigation may provide new insights for clinically extending the therapy of OA.

Nanocarriers have been researched comprehensively for the development of novel boron-containing agents in boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT). We designed and synthesized a multifunctional mesoporous silica nanoparticle (MSN)-based boron-containing agent. The latter was coated with a lipid bilayer (LB) and decorated with SP94 peptide (SFSIIHTPILPL) on the surface as SP94-LB@BA-MSN. The latter incorporated boric acid (BA) into hydrophobic mesopores, coated with an LB, and modified with SP94 peptide on the LB. SP94-LB@BA-MSN enhanced nano interface tumor-targeting ability but also prevented the premature release of drugs, which is crucial for BNCT because adequate boron content in tumor sites is required. SP94-LB@BA-MSN showed excellent efficacy in the BNCT treatment of HepG-2 cells. In animal studies with tumor-bearing mice, SP94-LB@BA-MSN exhibited a satisfactory accumulation at the tumor site. The boron content reached 40.18 ± 5.41 ppm in the tumor site 4 h after injection, which was 8.12 and 15.51 times higher than those in mice treated with boronated phenylalanine and those treated with BA. For boron, the tumor-to-normal tissue ratio was 4.41 ± 1.13 and the tumor-to-blood ratio was 5.92 ± 0.45. These results indicated that nanoparticles delivered boron to the tumor site effectively while minimizing accumulation in normal tissues. In conclusion, this composite (SP94-LB@BA-MSN) shows great promise as a boron-containing delivery agent for the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma using BNCT. These findings highlight the potential of MSNs in the field of BNCT.

The metastasis and recurrence of cancer are related to immunosuppression and hypoxia in the tumor microenvironment. Activating immune activity and improving the hypoxic environment face essential challenges. This paper reports on a multifunctional nanomaterial, HSCCMBC, that induces immunogenic cell death through powerful photodynamic therapy/chemodynamic therapy synergistic antitumor effects. The tumor microenvironment changed from the immunosuppressive type to immune type, activated the immune activity of the system, decomposed hydrogen peroxide to generate oxygen based on Fenton-like reaction, and effectively increased the level of intracellular O 2 with the assistance of 3-bromopyruvate, a cell respiratory inhibitor. The structure and composition of HSCCMBC were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, etc. Oxygen probe RDPP was used to investigate the oxygen level inside and outside the cell, and hydroxyl radical probe tetramethylbenzidine was used to investigate the Fenton-like reaction ability. The immunofluorescence method investigated the expression of various immune markers and hypoxia-inducing factors in vitro and in vivo after treatment. In vitro and in vivo experiments indicate that HSCCMBC is an excellent antitumor agent and is expected to be a candidate drug for antitumor immunotherapy.

Osteoarthritis (OA), primarily characterized by the deterioration of articular cartilage, is a highly prevalent joint-disabling disease. The pathological onset and progression of OA are closely related to cartilage lubrication dysfunction and synovial inflammation. Synergistic options targeted at restorative lubrication and anti-inflammation are expected to be the most attractive candidates to treat OA and perhaps help prevent it. Herein, a bioinspired lubricant (HA/PA@Lipo) was fabricated by combining anionic hyaluronan- graft -poly(2-acrylamide-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid sodium salt) (HA/PA) with cationic liposomes (Lipo) via electrostatic interaction. HA/PA@Lipo mimicked the lubrication complex located on the outer cartilage surface and was endowed cartilage with excellent cartilage-lubricating performances. After the antioxidant gallic acid (GA) was loaded for dual functionality, HA/PA@Lipo-GA was prepared with added anti-inflammatory properties. HA/PA@Lipo-GA showed favorable biocompatibility with C28/I2 cells, inhibited the production of reactive oxygen, and regulated the expression levels of anabolic genes and proteins. The therapeutic effects of HA/PA@Lipo-GA were evaluated using a sodium iodoacetate-induced OA rat model, and the preventive effects of HA/PA@Lipo-GA were estimated in vivo . The results suggested the robust potential of HA/PA@Lipo-GA with dual functions as a candidate option for OA treatment and prevention.

Cancer metastasis and recurrence are closely associated with immunosuppression and a hypoxic tumor microenvironment. Chemodynamic therapy (CDT) and photothermodynamic therapy (PTT) have been shown to induce immunogenic cell death (ICD), effectively inhibiting cancer metastasis and recurrence when combined with immune adjuvants. However, the limited efficacy of Fenton's reaction and suboptimal photothermal effect present significant challenges for successfully inducing ICD through CDT and PTT. This paper described the synthesis and immunoantitumor activity of the novel iron-copper-doped folic acid carbon dots (CFCFB). Copper-doped folic acid carbon dots (Cu-FACDs) were initially synthesized via a hydrothermal method, using folic acid and copper gluconate as precursors. Subsequently, the nanoparticles CFCFB were obtained through cross-linking and self-assembly of Cu-FACDs with ferrocene dicarboxylic acid (FeDA) and 3-bromopyruvic acid (3BP). The catalytic effect of carbon dots in CFCFB enhanced the activity of the Fenton reaction, thereby promoting CDT-induced ICD and increasing the intracellular oxygen concentration. Additionally, 3BP inhibited cellular respiration, further amplifying the oxygen concentration. The photothermal conversion efficiency of CFCFB reached 55.8%, which significantly enhanced its antitumor efficacy through photothermal therapy. Immunofluorescence assay revealed that treatment with CFCFB led to an increased expression of ICD markers, including calreticulin (CRT) and ATP, as well as extracellular release of HMGB-1, indicating the induction of ICD by CFCFB. Moreover, the observed downregulation of ARG1 expression indicates a transition in the tumor microenvironment from an immunosuppressive state to an antitumor state following treatment with CFCFB. The upregulation of IL-2 and CD8 expression facilitated the differentiation of effector T cells, resulting in an augmented population of CD8 + T cells, thereby indicating the activation of systemic immune response.

Accurate prediction of the relative biological effectiveness (RBE) of boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) is challenging. The therapy is different from other radiotherapy; the dynamic distribution of boron-containing compounds in tumor cells affects the therapeutic outcome considerably and hampers accurate measurement of the neutron-absorbed dose. Herein, we used boron-containing metal-organic framework nanoparticles (BMOFs) with high boron content to target U87-MG cells and maintain the concentration of the 10 B isotope in cells. The content of boron in the cells could maintain 90% (60 ppm) within 20 min compared with that at the beginning; therefore, the accurate RBE of BNCT can be acquired. The effects of BNCT upon cells after neutron irradiation were observed, and the neutron-absorbed dose was obtained by Monte Carlo simulations. The RBE of BMOFs was 6.78, which was 4.1-fold higher than that of a small-molecule boron-containing agent (boric acid). The energy spectrum of various particles was analyzed by Monte Carlo simulations, and the RBE was verified theoretically. Our results suggested that the use of nanoparticle-based boron carriers in BNCT may have many advantages and that maintaining a stable boron distribution within cells may significantly improve the efficiency of BNCT.

Garnet Li 7 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 (LLZO) is considered a promising solid electrolyte for all-solid-state lithium-ion batteries due to its outstanding performance in which Ga-doped LLZO particularly exhibits excellent ionic conductivity. However, the application of Ga-doped LLZO is limited by the interfacial instability between Ga-doped LLZO and Li metal. In this study, Ga 3+ - and Sb 5+ -codoped LLZO is prepared using a conventional solid-state reaction method, and the effects of dual-doping on the crystal structure, microstructure, conductivity of LLZO, and battery cycle stability are investigated. The results demonstrate that the introduction of an appropriate amount of Sb 5+ into Ga 3+ -stabilized cubic-phase LLZO promotes grain contact and enhances the total ionic conductivity. The optimized Li 6.3 Ga 0.2 La 3 Zr 1.9 Sb 0.1 O 12 solid electrolyte exhibits the highest total ionic conductivity of 4.65 × 10 -4 S cm -1 at room temperature. Additionally, the introduction of Sb 5+ suppresses the formation of the LiGaO 2 impurity phase, thereby improving the interface stability between Ga-doped LLZO and the Li metal. The assembled Li||Ga,Sb 0.1 -LLZO||Li symmetric cell demonstrates stable cycling for 500 h at room temperature under a current density of 0.13 mA cm -2 . The Li||Ga,Sb 0.1 -LLZO||LiFePO 4 full cell delivers a reversible capacity of about 140 mA h g -1 , exhibiting negligible decay after 50 cycles. These findings suggest that the application of Ga-doped LLZO in all-solid-state lithium-ion batteries holds great promise by simply doping Zr sites with high-valence ions.

As an advanced sensing technology, dual-mode flexible sensing, integrating both tactile and touchless perception, propels numerous intelligent devices toward a more practical and efficient direction. The ability to incorporate multiple sensing modes and accurately distinguish them in real time has become crucial for technological advancements. Here, we proposed a dual-mode sensing system (B-MIGS) consisting of a dual-layer sensing device with a magnetically induced grid structure and a testing device. The system was capable of utilizing mechanical pressure to perceive tactile stimulation and magnetic sensing to simultaneously transduce touchless stimulation simultaneously. By leveraging the triboelectric effect, the decoupling of tactile and touchless signals in the presence of unknown signal sources was achieved. Additionally, the sensing characteristics of the B-MIGS were optimized by varying the curing magnetic induction intensity and magnetic particle concentration. The influence of the temperature and humidity on the sensing signals was also discussed. Finally, the practical value of the B-MIGS as a dual-mode monitoring system was demonstrated on soft petals and sensor arrays, along with exploration of its potential application in underwater environments.

As an emerging cancer treatment strategy, ferroptosis is distinguished by the perturbation of lipid metabolism equilibrium and the accumulation of lipid peroxidation. However, the efficacy is consistently hindered by excessive GSH in the tumor microenvironment (TME). Here, this work designed and prepared multifunctional tumor-targeting carbon dots (FG-CDs@Cu) for ferroptosis and immunotherapy. Cu 2+ in FG-CDs@Cu rapidly depletes high concentrations of GSH and inhibits glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4) expression in an acidic TME. Meanwhile, the generated Cu + produced reactive oxygen species (ROS) through Fenton-like reaction. Due to the high efficiency of ROS production and GSH depletion, ferroptosis mediated by oxidative stress is significantly enhanced by FG-CDs@Cu in vivo , which can induce immunogenic cell death and promote CD8 + T cell infiltration. Meanwhile, the generated O 2 effectively improves the hypoxic environment of the cells and leads to the reduction of hypoxia factor-1α (HIF-1α) expression, which activates the transformation of tumor-promoting M2-type tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) to tumor-inhibiting M1-type TAMs, further enhancing the immune response and ferroptosis. The in vivo tests suggested that FG-CDs@Cu could efficiently suppress tumor growth in the mouse model and did not cause obvious toxicity. The combination with antiprogrammed death-ligand 1 (αPD-L1) synergy immune therapy could effectively restrain the growth of distal tumors, suggesting the significant potential of FG-CDs@Cu in augmenting ferroptosis and immunotherapy for efficacious cancer treatment.

The rapid characterization of nanoparticles for morphological information such as size and shape is essential for material synthesis as they are the determining factors for the optical, mechanical, and chemical properties and related applications. In this paper, we report a computational imaging platform to characterize nanoparticle size and morphology under conventional optical microscopy. We established a machine learning model based on a series of images acquired by through-focus scanning optical microscopy (TSOM) on a conventional optical microscope. This model predicts the size of silver nanocubes with an estimation error below 5% on individual particles. At the ensemble level, the estimation error is 1.6% for the averaged size and 0.4 nm for the standard deviation. The method can also identify the tip morphology of silver nanowires from the mix of sharp-tip and blunt-tip samples at an accuracy of 82%. Furthermore, we demonstrated online monitoring for the evolution of the size distribution of nanoparticles during synthesis. This method can be potentially extended to more complicated nanomaterials such as anisotropic and dielectric nanoparticles.

Tendon injuries are some of the most commonly diagnosed musculoskeletal diseases. Tendon regeneration is sensitive to the topology of the substitute as it affects the cellular microenvironment and homeostasis. To bionic in vivo three-dimensional (3D) aligned microenvironment, an ordered 3D sandwich model was used to investigate the cell response in the tendon. First, high-resolution 3D printing provided parallel-grooved topographical cues on the hydrogel surface. Then the cells were seeded on its surface to acquire a 2D model. Afterward, an additional hydrogel coating layer was applied to the cells to create the 3D model. The interaction between cells and order structures in three-dimensions is yet to be explored. The study found that the tendon stem/progenitor cells (TSPCs) still maintain their ordering growth in the 3D model as in the 2D model. The study also found that the 3D-aligned TSPCs exhibited enhanced tenogenic differentiation through the PI3K-AKT signaling pathway and presented a less inflammatory phenotype than those in the 2D model. The in vivo implantation of such a 3D-aligned TSPC composite promoted tendon regeneration and mitigated heterotopic ossification in an Achilles defect model. These findings demonstrated that 3D-aligned TSPCs within a biomimetic topology environment are promising for functional tendon regeneration.

Hydrogel has been widely used in modern biotherapeutics due to its excellent biocompatibility, degradability, and high drug loading capacity. Among them, the construction of a phototherapy system including photosensitizer and hydrogel has aroused great interest in tumor therapy. Unfortunately, complex modifications are necessary to integrate different photosensitizers into the hydrogel. In this work, an injectable hydrogel was proposed by the Schiff base reaction between HA-CHO and carbon dots (CDs), which can realize PTT and PTT simultaneously. Notably, the CDs with rich -NH 2 can be used not only as a photosensitizer but also as an efficient cross-linking agent for the Schiff base reaction to form a hydrogel network. The CD@Hydrogel with outstanding biosafety showed a high antitumor effect after 660 nm laser irradiation in in vitro and in vivo experiments. In summary, the CD@Hydrogel can not only realize PTT and PDT synergistic treatment under one light source but also act as a cross-linking agent to react with HA-CHO to form hydrogel, which is simple and efficient, providing a new strategy for cancer phototherapy.

Controlling the nanoscale light-matter interaction using superfocusing hybrid photonic-plasmonic devices has attracted significant research interest in tackling existing challenges, including converting efficiencies, working bandwidths, and manufacturing complexities. With the growth in demand for efficient photonic-plasmonic input-output interfaces to improve plasmonic device performances, sophisticated designs with multiple optimization parameters are required, which comes with an unaffordable computation cost. Machine learning methods can significantly reduce the cost of computations compared to numerical simulations, but the input-output dimension mismatch remains a challenging problem. Here, we introduce a physics-guided two-stage machine learning network that uses the improved coupled-mode theory for optical waveguides to guide the learning module and improve the accuracy of predictive engines to 98.5%. A near-unity coupling efficiency with symmetry-breaking selectivity is predicted by the inverse design. By fabricating photonic-plasmonic couplers using the predicted profiles, we demonstrate that the excitation efficiency of 83% on the radially polarized surface plasmon mode can be achieved, which paves the way for super-resolution optical imaging.

Li-S batteries are considered to be the most promising next-generation advanced energy-storage systems. However, the sluggish reaction kinetics and the "shuttle effect" of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) severely limit their battery performances. To overcome the complex and multiphase sulfur redox chemistry of LiPSs, in this study, we propose a new type of cobalt-based double catalytic sites (DCSs) codoped mesoporous carbon to immobilize and reversibly catalyze the LiPS intermediates in the cycling process, thus eliminating the shuttle effect and improving the charge-discharge kinetics. The theoretical calculation shows that the well-designed DCS configuration endows LiPSs with both strong and weak binding capabilities, which will facilitate the synergistic and reversible catalytic conversion. Furthermore, the experimental results also confirm that the DCS structure shows significantly enhanced catalytic kinetics than the single catalytic sites. The Li-S battery equipped with the DCS structure displays an extremely high discharge capacity of 918 mA h g -1 at a current density of 0.2 C and can reach a capacity of 867 mA h g -1 after 200 cycles with an ultralow capacity attenuation rate of 0.028% for each cycle. This study opens new avenues to address the catalytic requirements both in discharging and charging processes.

Engineering efficient zinc-air batteries have attracted tremendous attention because of their essential role in the field of renewable energy systems. However, the sluggish reaction kinetics of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) at the air cathode impair the battery performance significantly. Recently, metal-N-C-based porous carbon nanoarchitectures have emerged as promising ORR electrocatalysts in zinc-air batteries. Herein, taking advantage of metal-organic complexation and mesoporous silica templates, we successfully anchor Fe-N-C sites on hierarchically porous carbon sphere and carbon nanotube interpenetrated nanostructures (Fe-N-C/HPCS@CNT) to serve as efficient cathodes for zinc-air batteries. Benefiting from its synergistic effects between the highly active Fe-N-C sites, ultrahigh surface areas, and unique hierarchically porous nanostructures, Fe-N-C/HPCS@CNT exhibits preferable ORR performance ( E 1/2 = 0.873 V) compared to commercial Pt/C ( E 1/2 = 0.841 V). Most importantly, when used as a cathode catalyst for homemade zinc-air batteries, Fe-N-C/HPCS@CNT exhibits gratifying peak power density (164.0 mW cm -2 ), large specific capacity (762.0 mAh g -1 ), superior long-term stability, extraordinary rate capability, and excellent charge/discharge performance. We believe that this report will not only offer new insights into the design of Fe-N-C-based catalysts but also promote the practical utilization of Fe-N-C-based cathodes for a wide range of energy applications.

The half-Heusler (HH) compound NbCoSn with 18 valence electrons is a promising thermoelectric (TE) material due to its appropriate electrical properties as well as its suitable thermal and chemical stability. Nowadays, doping/substitution and tailoring of microstructures are common experimental approaches to enhance the TE performance of HH compounds. However, detailed theoretical insights into the effects of doping on the microstructures and TE properties are still missing. In this work, the microstructure of NbCoSn was tailored through precipitating the full-Heusler phases in the matrix by changing the nominal ratio of Co and Ni on the Co sites, focusing on the resulting TE properties. Further, first-principles calculations were employed to understand the relationship between the microstructure and the TE properties from the thermodynamic point of view. Detailed analysis of the electronic structure reveals that the presence of excess Co/Ni contributes to the increasing carrier concentration. Through an increase in the electrical conductivity and a reduction in the thermal conductivity, the TE performance is improved. Therefore, the present work offers a new pathway and insights to enhance the TE properties by modifying the microstructure of HH compounds via tailoring the chemical compositions.

Metallofullerenes have attracted considerable attention as potential novel noninvasive high-relaxivity magnetic resonance contrast agents. However, the applications of metallofullerenes as stimuli-responsive biosensors to monitor biological processes are still scarce. Herein, manganese-fullerenes core-shell nanocomposites are prepared via a facile one-pot approach to achieve GSH-activatable magnetic resonance/fluorescence bimodal imaging functions. The nanocomposites initially have a FRET-induced quenched fluorescence, and water-resisting stimulated low T 1 -MRI contrast. Upon exposure to GSH, collapse of the outer MnO 2 shell led to reconstruction of the nanoprobes and subsequently resulted in multicolor fluorescence recovery and longitudinal ( T 1 ) relaxivity enhancement ( r 1 value up to 29.8 mM -1 s -1 at 0.5 T based on Mn ion). Our work demonstrates feasibility of using fullerenes to fabricate activatable probes for molecular imaging of GSH, which may promote the development of new fullerene-based stimuli-responsive multimodal probes for the detection and regulation of particular biological processes in vivo.

Abnormal miRNA expressions are closely related to the occurrence and development of cancers. It is of great significance to monitor miRNA expression levels for early diagnosis and therapy of the diseases. This study presents two independent colorimetric strategies for simultaneously monitoring multiple miRNAs based on cross-linking or non-cross-linking aggregations of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). By introducing a Y shaped DNA structure and two types of DNA modified AuNPs, a triple-input DNA AND logic gate is facilely developed with the cross-linking aggregation of AuNPs as the signal output. To improve the sensitivity and shorten reaction time, the logic gate is modified by further employing a three DNA strands formed duplex and hybridization chain reaction. Non-cross-linking aggregation of AuNPs is used to evaluate the concentration of initial miRNA inputs. This strategy does not require DNA modification of AuNPs and ultrahigh sensitivity is achieved with the amplification of hybridization chain reaction. The present work may provide powerful tools for multiple miRNAs diagnostics and inspire further development of DNA based logic gates.

The mild recognition sites of oxygen atoms and phenyl rings from 5-(4-pyridyl)-methoxyl isophthalic acid (5,4-PMIA 2- ) moieties and tetrakis(4-pyridyloxymethylene) methane (TPOM) linkers inside the channels of a novel three-dimensional microporous metal-organic framework (MOF) [Co 2 (5,4-PMIA) 2 (TPOM) 0.5 ]· xsolvent (1) are presumed to provide pore environments with moderate contacts toward guests, as indicated by grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations, which appear to be beneficial for adsorption and separation applications. As expected, 1 represents one of the rare examples that show both high storage capacity of C 2 H n and good adsorption selectivity of C 2 H n /CH 4 and CO 2 /CH 4 under ambient conditions, and yet, it has significantly lower energy consumption for regeneration. In addition, a validated submicro-1-based microsolid-phase extraction (μ-SPE) method for the determination of trace monohydroxylated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in complex human urine was developed with satisfactory sensitivity and good precision by online coupling to liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, which represents the first example of a mixed-ligand MOF applied as an efficient sorbent for μ-SPE.

The synthesis of durable and low-cost electrocatalyst is crucial but challenging. Here, we developed a one-pot pyrolysis approach toward the preparation of heteroatom-doped hierarchical porous three-dimensional (3D) graphene frameworks decorated with multilayer graphene shell-coated cobalt oxide nanocrystal. Large literal sheet size of graphene nanomeshes may stimulate rapid thermolysis with cobalt-oleate complex to form Co 3 O 4 nanocrystals and in situ growth of multilayer graphene coating co-doped by boron and nitrogen with controlling heating rate up to 600 °C. This new material worked as superior bifunctional electrocatalyst on oxygen reduction reaction and oxygen evolution reaction to commercial Pt/C with better onset potential/half-wave potentials, larger current density, better stability, and stronger methanol tolerance. The heteroatom co-doping into porous/curved graphene confined nanocrystals in 3D porous walls provided adequate accessibility of created catalytic active sites and ideal mass transport route for the excellent catalytic activity on redox reaction of oxygen. The synthesized material-based Zn-air battery further confirmed its superior electrolytic activity with high specific capacity and smaller overpotential. This one-pot pyrolysis method shows a great potential of scalable synthesis of high-performance practical electrocatalyst for metal-air batteries and fuel cells at a low cost.

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) battery is one of the most attractive candidates for the next-generation energy storage system. However, the intrinsic insulating nature of sulfur and the notorious polysulfide shuttle are the major obstacles, which hinder the commercial application of Li-S battery. Confining sulfur into conductive porous carbon matrices with designed polarized surfaces is regarded as a promising and effective strategy to overcome above issues. Herein, we propose to use microalgaes (Schizochytrium sp.) as low-cost, renewable carbon/nitrogen precursors and biological templates to synthesize N-doped porous carbon microspheres (NPCMs). These rational designed NPCMs can not only render the sulfur-loaded NPCMs (NPCSMs) composites with high electronic conductivity and sulfur content, but also greatly suppress the diffusion of polysulfides by strongly physical and chemical adsorptions. As a result, NPCSMs cathode demonstrates a superior reversible capacity (1030.7 mA h g -1 ) and remarkable capacity retention (91%) at 0.1 A g -1 after 100 cycles. Even at an extremely high current density of 5 A g -1 , NPCSMs still can deliver a satisfactory discharge capacity of 692.3 mAh g -1 . This work reveals a sustainable and effective biosynthetic strategy to fabricate N-doped porous carbon matrices for high performance sulfur cathode in Li-S battery, as well as offers a fascinating possibility to rationally design and synthesize novel carbon-based composites.

This work shows the sodium citrate induced efficient interpolymer π-stacking aggregation of the planar cationic conjugated polyelectrolyte poly[{9,9-bis[6'-(N,N-trimethylamino)hexyl]-2,7-fluorenyleneethynylene}-alt-co-(1,4-phenylene)] dibromide (PFE) in aqueous solution, which results in the self-quenching of fluorescence. Using the citrate-induced aggregation properties of PFE and the strong chelation ability of citrate with aluminum ions (Al(3+)), a sensitive and selective Al(3+)-ion detection assay in aqueous solution was developed through monitoring of the fluorescence recovery of PFE. The fluorescence intensity recovery of PFE depends on the concentration of Al(3+) ions, and linear fluorescence recovery was observed in the range of 0.5-9 μM. The limit of detection of this assay is 0.37 μM. Its simplicity and rapidity mean this assay shows promise for the real-time detection of Al(3+).

Oligonucleotides such as siRNA and plasmid DNA (pDNA) have great potential for gene therapies. Multifunctional, environment-resistant carriers with imaging capabilities are required to track the assembly and disassembly of oligonucleotides, monitor the delivery processes, and develop new delivery systems. Conjugated polymers and oligomers can potentially be used as novel materials for functional nanocarriers with both delivery and imaging abilities. In this work, a novel π-conjugated oligomer 4,7-(9,9'-bis(6-adenine hexyl)fluorenyl)-2,1,3-benzothiadiazole (OFBT-A) modified with nucleotide adenine (A) groups in its side chains is synthesized and characterized. Fluorescent nanoparticles based on the π-conjugated oligomers OFBT-A are developed as novel functional nanocarriers for oligonucleotides. Single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) TR-T5 labeled with Texas Red (TR) fluorescent dye is selected as a model payload oligonucleotide. The capture abilities and stability of OFBT-A are investigated by monitoring the fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) efficiency between the OFBT-A nanoparticles and TR labels in solution. The OFBT-A/TR-T5 composites are stable in solution at high ionic strengths (0-500 mM) and have a wide working pH range, from 3.0 to 9.5. The in vitro profile demonstrates that the release of the TR-DNA is induced by the ssDNA A43, which has a high charge density. The release process is monitored by measuring the changes in FRET efficiency and fluorescence color for the OFBT-A/TR-T5 composites. Using this carrier, the uptake of TR-DNA by A549 lung cancer cells is observed. Both the OFBT-A nanoparticles and the OFBT-A/TR-T5 composites show high cytocompatibility. We anticipate that these novel functional nanocarriers will provide a safe strategy for monitoring the gene delivery process.
