Aqueous zinc ion batteries are excellent energy storage devices with high safety and low cost. However, the corrosion reaction and zinc dendrite formation occurring on the surface of zinc anodes are hindering their further development. To solve the problems, zirconium acetate (ZA) was used as an electrolyte additive in the ZnSO 4 electrolyte. Attributing to the higher electro-positivity of Zr 4+ than Zn 2+ , these high valence metal cations preferentially adsorb onto the surface of metallic zinc, shielding parasitic reactions between zinc and electrolyte, reshaping the electric field distribution, and directing preferential homogeneous deposition of Zn-ions on the Zn (002) crystal plane. Furthermore, the adsorption of Zr 4+ on the Zn metal after electrochemical cycles can enhance the energy barrier of zinc atom diffusion, resulting in high resistance of corrosion and manipulation of the Zn 2+ nucleation configuration. Attributing to these properties, the Zn//Zn symmetric cell with an electrolyte additive of ZA was able to cycle for 400 h under an extremely high current density of 40 mA cm -2 with an area capacity of 2 mAh cm -2 . Meanwhile, the MnO 2 //Zn coin cell still had 81.7 mAh g -1 (85% retention of capacity) after 850 cycles under a current density of 1 A g -1 .

Two-dimensional (2D) transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) are regarded as promising materials for next-generation logic circuits. Top gate field-effect transistors (FETs) have independent gate control ability and can be fabricated directly on TMDC materials without a transfer process. Therefore, it has the merits of device reliability and complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) process compatibility, which are demanded in practical circuit-level integration. However, the fabrication of the top gate FET involves depositing an insulating dielectric layer and a gate electrode in sequence on the TMDC channel material, which may affect the device performance. Insightfully investigating the influences of different top-gate-deposition methods on the electrical properties of the TMDC channel and further harnessing these influences to realize a homogeneous CMOS device on an identical 2D TMDC platform are with practice significance. In this work, p/n-type controllable top gate FET arrays based on 2H-MoTe 2 are fabricated by using different top-gate-deposition methods. The electron-beam evaporation (EBE) of top metal gate exhibits an obvious n-doping effect on the 2H-MoTe 2 channel and converts it from p-type to n-type, whereas the thermal evaporation of top gate affects little to the channel. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) analysis reveals that the high-energy metal atoms from the EBE process can penetrate through the 30 nm gate dielectric layers (including 10 nm Al 2 O 3 seeding layer), leading to multiple atomic defects in both MoTe 2 and the interface between MoTe 2 and Al 2 O 3 . Furthermore, by utilizing the top gate engineering, a large-scale double-top-gate MoTe 2 homogeneous CMOS inverter array is fabricated. The CMOS inverters exhibit clear logic swing, negligible hysteresis, and high device yield (∼93%), indicating high device reliability and stability. Notably, the fabrication process is facile, free from transfer procedure, and compatible with traditional silicon technology. This work promotes the application of 2D TMDCs in nanoelectronics integration.

Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) have natural advantages in overcoming the short-channel effect in field-effect transistors (FETs) and in fabricating three-dimensional FETs, which benefit in increasing device density. However, so far, most reported works related to MoS 2 FETs with a sub-100 nm channel employ mechanically exfoliated materials and all of the works involve electron beam lithography (EBL), which may limit their application in fabricating wafer-scale device arrays as demanded in integrated circuits (ICs). In this work, MoS 2 FET arrays with a side-wall source and drain electrodes vertically distributed are designed and fabricated. The channel length of the as-fabricated FET is basically determined by the thickness of an insulating layer between the source and drain electrodes. The vertically distributed source and drain electrodes enable to reduce the electrode-occupied area and increase in the device density. The as-fabricated vertical FETs exhibit on/off ratios comparable to those of mechanically exfoliated MoS 2 FETs with a nanoscale channel length under identical V DS . In addition, the as-fabricated FETs can work at a V DS as low as 10 mV with a desirable on/off ratio (1.9 × 10 7 ), which benefits in developing low-power devices. Moreover, the fabrication process is free from EBL and can be applied to wafer-scale device arrays. The statistical results show that the fabricated FET arrays have a device yield of 87.5% and an average on/off ratio of about 1.7 × 10 6 at a V DS of 10 mV, with the lowest and highest ones to be about 1.3 × 10 4 and 1.9 × 10 7 , respectively, demonstrating the good reliability of our fabrication process. Our work promises a bright future for TMDCs in realizing high-density and low-power nanoelectronic devices in ICs.

PEO-LiX solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) with the addition of Li 6.4 La 3 Zr 1.4 Ta 0.6 O 12 (LLZTO) fillers is considered as a promising solid-state electrolyte for solid-state Li-ion batteries. However, the developments of the SPE have caused additional challenges, such as poor contact interface and SPE/Li interface stability during cycling, which always lead to potentially catastrophic battery failure. The main problem is that the real impact of LLZTO fillers on the interfacial properties between SPE and Li metal is still unclear. Herein, we combined the electrochemical measurement and in situ synchrotron-based X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) imaging technology to study the role of LLZTO fillers in directing SPE/Li interface electrochemical performance. In situ XRF-XANES mapping during cycling showed that addition of an appropriate amount of LLZTO fillers (50 wt %) can improve the interfacial contact and stability between SPE and Li metal without reacting with the PEO and Li salts. Additionally, it also demonstrated the beneficial effect of LLZTO particles for suppressing the interface reactions between the Li metal and PEO-LiTFSI SPE and further inhibiting Li-metal dendrite growth. The Li|LiFePO 4 batteries deliver long cycling for over 700 cycles with a low-capacity fade rate of 0.08% per cycle at a rate of 0.3C, revealing tremendous potential in promoting the large-scale application of future solid-state Li-ion batteries.

Superconducting states onsetting at moderately high temperatures have been observed in epitaxially stabilized RE NiO 2 -based thin films. However, recently, it has also been reported that superconductivity at high temperatures is observed in bulk La 3 Ni 2 O 7-δ at high pressure, opening further possibilities for study. Here we report the reduction profile of La 3 Ni 2 O 7 in a stream of 5% H 2 /Ar gas and the isolation of the metastable intermediate phase La 3 Ni 2 O 6.45 , which is based on Ni 2+ . Although this reduced phase does not superconduct at ambient or high pressures, it offers insights into the Ni-327 system and encourages future study of nickelates as a function of oxygen content.

Currently, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as viable candidates for enduring electrode materials in nonenzyme glucose sensing. However, given the inherent water susceptibility of MOFs and their complete self-reconstruction during the process of electrochemical oxygen evolution in alkaline conditions, we are motivated to explore the truth of MOFs catalyzing glucose oxidation. In this work, we fabricated a two-dimensional cobalt-based zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-L) as the electrode material for catalyzing glucose oxidation in alkaline conditions. Our explorations revealed that while the initial glucose catalytic response varied among ZIF-L samples with differing thicknesses, the ultimate steady-state catalytic performance remained largely consistent. This phenomenon arose from the transformation of ZIF-L with distinct thicknesses into CoOOH with uniform morphological and structural characteristics during the glucose catalysis process. And in situ Raman spectroscopy elucidated the sustained equilibrium within the glucose catalytic system, wherein the dynamic interconversion between CoOOH and Co(OH) 2 governs the overall process. This study contributes to an enhanced understanding of the glucose catalytic mechanism aspects of nonenzymatic glucose sensor electrode materials, offering insights that serve as inspiration for the development of advanced glucose electrode materials.

The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) severely limits the efficiency of proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers due to slow reaction kinetics. IrO 2 is currently a commonly used anode catalyst, but its large-scale application is limited due to its high price and scarce reserves. Herein, we reported a practical strategy to construct an acid OER catalyst where Iridium oxide loading and iridium element bulk doping are realized on the surface and inside of W 18 O 49 nanowires by immersion adsorption, respectively. Specifically, W 0.7 Ir 0.3 O y has an overpotential of 278 mV at 10 mA·cm -2 in 0.1 M HClO 4 . The mass activity of 714.10 A·g Ir -1 at 1.53 V vs. the reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) is 80 times that of IrO 2 , and it can run stably for 55 h. In the PEM water electrolyzer device, its mass activity reaches 3563.63 A·g Ir -1 at the cell voltage of 2.0 V. This improved catalytic performance is attributed to the following aspects: (1) The electron transport between iridium and tungsten effectively improves the electronic structure of the catalyst; (2) the introduction of iridium into W 18 O 49 by means of elemental bulk doping and nanoparticles supporting for the enhanced conductivity and electrochemically active surface area of the catalyst, resulting in extensive exposure of active sites and increased intrinsic activity; and (3) during the OER process, partial iridium elements in the bulk phase are precipitated, and iridium oxide is formed on the surface to maintain stable activity. This work provides a new idea for designing oxygen evolution catalysts with low iridium content for practical application in PEM electrolyzers.

Two-dimensional transition metal carbides (Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene) have emerged as new candidates for applications in multifunctional devices owing to their outstanding performance. However, these electronic devices are easily disturbed by water, breakage, oxidation during use, and limited energy resources. To solve these problems, herein, inspired by nature, a novel superhydrophobic, healable photothermal deicing and photodetector (SHPP) with a "papillary structure" is successfully fabricated for the first time, by a simple layer-by-layer assembly spraying process with 0D/1D/2D nanomaterials. As a result, the superhydrophobic modified 2D MXene coating (FM coating) on the SHPP sensor exhibits outstanding self-cleaning, long-term durability (>20 days), as well as excellent photothermal deicing performances under near-infrared light. Meanwhile, the unique semiembedded nano-ZnO/1D silver nanowire supports the sensor with desirable photoelectric performance with UV light and a fast response time (∼1 s), and good cycle stability. Moreover, benefiting from the transparent self-healing substrate, the photothermal deicing and photodetector properties can be restored at room temperature. The bioinspired structures and function mechanisms offer SHPP sensors great potential for the utilization of clean light energy, sensing, self-cleaning, anti-icing, and so forth.

We demonstrate the use of the machine learning (ML) tools to rapidly and accurately predict the electric field as a guide for designing core-shell Au-silica nanoparticles to enhance 1 O 2 sensitization and selectivity of organic synthesis. Based on the feature importance analysis, obtained from a deep neural network algorithm, we found a general and linear dependent descriptor (θ ∝ aD 0.25 t -1 , where a , D , and t are the shape constant, size of metal nanoparticles, and distance from the metal surface) for the electric field around the core-shell plasmonic nanoparticle. Directed by the new descriptor, we synthesized gold-silica nanoparticles and validated their plasmonic intensity using scanning transmission electron microscopy-electron energy loss spectroscopy (STEM-EELS) mapping. The nanoparticles with θ = 0.40 demonstrate an ∼3-fold increase in the reaction rate of photooxygenation of anthracene and 4% increase in the selectivity of photooxygenation of dihydroartemisinic acid (DHAA), a long-standing goal in organic synthesis. In addition, the combination of ML and experimental investigations shows the synergetic effect of plasmonic enhancement and fluorescence quenching, leading to enhancement for 1 O 2 generation. Our results from time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations suggest that the presence of an electric field can favor intersystem crossing (ISC) of methylene blue to enhance 1 O 2 generation. The strategy reported here provides a data-driven catalyst preparation method that can significantly reduce experimental cost while paving the way for designing photocatalysts for organic drug synthesis.

With the advancement of material science and electronic technology, wearable devices have been integrated into daily lives, no longer just a stirring idea in science fiction. In the future, robust multifunctionalized wearable devices with low cost and long-term service life are urgently required. However, preparing multifunctional wearable devices robust enough to resist harsh conditions using a commercially available raw material through a simple process still remains challenging. In this work, reprocessable polyurea (HUBTPU) with a hard segment of hindered urea bonds (HUBs) and a soft segment of polyether is synthesized via a facile one-pot method. The robust dual functional wearable devices were obtained by simply spray-coating silver nanowires (AgNWs) on HUBTPU elastomer substrates. Due to the dynamic combination and decomposition of the HUBs and hydrogen bonds at 130 °C, the robust elastomer demonstrates favorable adhesion to various substrates. Especially, the partially embedded AgNW structure is also achieved by using ethanol as a spray solvent. The adhesion of HUBTPU substrates and embedded structure leads to stronger interfacial adhesion and stability compared to non-adhesive substrates. The as-obtained HUBTPU electrodes are able to be heated to 115 °C by applying a low voltage and sensing the strain deformation caused by human movement, which means that the electrodes are endowed with both electrical heating capability and strain sensing functionality. Therefore, this strategy reveals a potential way to prepare multifunctional wearable devices using other conductive particles and adhesive functional polymer substrates.

The research and development of low-power-consumption and room-temperature hydrogen sensors are of great significance for the safe application of hydrogen energy. Herein, orthorhombic Nb 2 O 5- x nanobelts are prepared through a combined procedure of hydrothermal, ion exchange, and annealing treatment in Ar. The topological transformation process results in the formation of abundant surface defects including chemical defects such as Nb 4+ , oxygen vacancies, and disordered microregions, which lead to the abnormal p -type conducting and hydrogen sensing behavior. Moreover, the orthorhombic Nb 2 O 5- x nanobelts exhibit fast and sensitive room-temperature hydrogen sensing performance, which shows greater advancement than the monoclinic, tetragonal, and hexagonal Nb 2 O 5 one-dimensional (1D) nanostructures. The response time and lowest limit of detection of the as-fabricated room-temperature sensor decrease to 28 s and 3.5 ppm, respectively. The sensor also exhibits a highly selective hydrogen response against CO, CH 4 , ethanol, H 2 S, and NH 3 . The hydrogen response of the Nb 2 O 5- x nanobelts can be attributed to the redox reaction between hydrogen and preadsorbed oxygens. The defective surface structure and the prolonged dimension of the nanobelts give rise to the highly reactive surface and the suppression of the negative nanojunction effect, which greatly improves the sensing performance. The orthorhombic lattice structure can also promote gas adsorption and diffusion behavior due to its specific catalytic and pathway effect. The results of this work can be helpful for the rational design and defect engineering of the Nb 2 O 5 -based 1D nanostructures for room-temperature hydrogen sensing applications.

Although flexible sensors have attracted considerable attention in emerging fields, including wearable electronics and soft robotics, their stability must be considered in practical applications, especially the effects of external factors on the sensing performance. Herein, a recyclable flexible sensor with superhydrophobicity and a highly sensitive strain response was developed by combining electrospinning and ultrasonication anchoring techniques. The constructed hierarchical network structure is composed of the fluorine-free superhydrophobic multiwalled carbon nanotubes and a porous elastomer membrane substrate reinforced by nanoparticles. The obtained sensor exhibited exceptional strain-sensing performance in terms of ultrahigh sensitivity (maximum gauge factor of 12 172.46), a fast response time of 80 ms, and excellent durability (10 000 cycles). Based on these outstanding merits, the strain sensor can detect various human motions without being interfered with by harsh environments. Moreover, superhydrophobic membranes can be combined with electronic devices for weather monitoring and underwater sensing. Noteworthily, damaged sensors can be quickly dissolved by a small amount of cyclohexane, enabling material recovery. The recyclable multifunctional membranes could reduce the potential pollution to the environment and show highly promising applications in complex environments.

Soft actuators with apparent uniqueness in exhibiting complex shape morphing are highly desirable for artificial intelligence applications. However, for the majority of soft actuators, in general, it is challenging to achieve versatility, durability, and configurability simultaneously. Enormous works are devoted to meet the multifunctional smart actuators, to little effect. Herein, self-healing and bio-mimetic smart actuators are proposed based on azobenzene chromophores and dynamic disulfide bonds. Benefiting from the dynamic and drivable vitrimer liquid crystal elastomer (V-LCE) materials, a series of actuators with single or compound dynamic three-dimensional structures were fabricated, which were capable of double-stimuli response and complex "bionic" motions, such as the blooming of a flower, grasping and loosening an object, and so forth. Moreover, these flexible actuators showed fascinating properties, such as high robustness, excellent elasticity-plasticity shape-memory properties ( R f and R r are close to 100%), easily reconfigurable property, and self-healing. This smart V-LCE provides a guideline to design and fabricate soft versatility actuators, which has prospects for developing smart bionic and artificial intelligence devices.

Smart materials that can respond to external stimuli have attracted considerable scientific interest and achieved fruitful results with the advancement of research. However, materials with adjustable performance and which could be intervened on-demand through stimulation are still rarely mentioned. Furthermore, most of these materials published so far usually require high temperature or the assistance of catalysts to change the structure and adjust their performance, and the process is always irreversible. Herein, we proposed an anthracene-functionalized novel polyurethane with adjustable performance and fluorescence self-reflection inspired by shellfish. Anthracene was used as a dynamic group to make the polymer chain structure topologically isomerize after UV exposure, finally constructing a reversible core-sheath in a homogeneous polymer. Moreover, this process is catalyst-free and has strong spatiotemporal controllability. The appearance of the reversible core-sheath structure could achieve the performance adjustment of materials, and the strength can be increased easily in real time and on-demand by UV light exposure. Through selective irradiation, spatial control stiffening of this material can also be realized. In addition, the performance can also be self-reflected through the fluorescence to realize the performance that is visualizable. This work dramatically simplifies the requirements and conditions for material performance adjustment while expanding the versatility and applications in intelligent materials such as artificial muscles, variably flexible electronic devices, heterogeneous materials, 4D printing, and what may be discovered in the future.

Stable and efficient syngas production via methane dry reforming is highly desirable as it utilizes two greenhouse gases simultaneously. In this work, active Ni-Cu nanoalloys stably anchored on periclase-phase MgAlO x nanosheets were successfully synthesized by a hydrothermal method. These highly dispersed small Ni-Cu alloys strongly interacted with the periclase-phase MgAlO x nanosheets, on which abundant base sites were accessible. On the optimal catalyst (6Ni6CuMgAl-S), methane and carbon dioxide conversion always reached 85 and 90% at 700 °C under a gas hour speed velocity of 40,000 mL/g cat h for more than 70 h. The hydrogen production rate was maintained at 1.8 mmol/min, and the ratio of H 2 /CO was kept at approximately 0.96 under a CH 4 and CO 2 flow rate of 25 mL/min. Coke deposition and Ni sintering were effectively suppressed by the formation of a Ni-Cu alloy, the laminar structure, and the periclase phase of the MgAlO x support. Moreover, the alloy nanoparticles were reconstructed into a segregated Ni-Cu alloy structure in response to the reaction environment, and this structure was more stable and still active. Density functional theory calculations showed that carbon adsorption was inhibited on the segregated Ni-Cu alloy. Furthermore, the experimental thermogravimetric and O 2 -TPO results confirmed the significant decrease in carbon deposition on the Ni-Cu alloy catalysts.

Light-driven polymerization, such as photoinduced electron/energy transfer-reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (PET-RAFT) polymerization, enables biological benign conditions and versatile functional polymer structure design, which is readily used in protein-polymer bioconjugates. However, conventional metalloporphyrinic homogeneous catalysts for PET-RAFT polymerization suffer from limited aqueous solubility and tedious purification. Here we demonstrate the design of PET-RAFT photocatalyst from the reticular assembled Zr-porphyrinic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), along with a biomacromolecule-based chain transfer agent, as efficient bioconjugation tools in water. Our methodology offers manufacturing advantages on bioconjugates under mild conditions such that MTT (3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5 diphenyl tetrazolium bromide) and cytotoxicity assays have shown the preservation of the protein integrity, bioactivity, and high cell viability after PET-RAFT polymerization. We find that the fast kinetics are benefiting from the ultrahigh loading of metalloporphyrins in MOF-525-Zn. This heterogeneous catalyst also allows us to maintain living characteristics to incorporate myriads of monomers into block copolymers. Other advantages like easy postreaction purification, reusability, and high oxygen tolerance even in an open system are demonstrated. This study provides a tool of highly efficient heterogeneous photocatalysts for polymer-protein bioconjugation in aqueous media and paves the road for biological applications.

The development of infrared stealth clothing technology and materials has been widely studied. However, the research of near-infrared stealth clothing still faces some challenges including complex preparation processes, narrow spectral ranges, and poor antidetection efficiency. To solve these questions, a CoGaZnSe multilayer film used for anti-near-infrared detection is designed and prepared by pulse laser deposition (PLD) at different pressures from 2 to 12 Pa. Microstructures of the film can transform from amorphous to crystal at different Ar atmospheres demonstrated by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and theoretical calculations. The films with different transmittances from 10 to 95% are combined with multilayer films for reducing the infrared reflection, which results in the lowest energy loss per unit thickness of 1.01 × 10 -11 dB/cm. The light propagation in the multilayer is calculated by finite-difference time domain, revealing the regular sinusoidal propagation and absorption in multilayers. The multilayer films are coated on the surface of common clothing materials and tested using an infrared detector in the range of 400-6000 nm. The results prove that the quantum efficiency of infrared detection can be effectively reduced by CoGaZnSe multilayer films, especially for wool (83% in the range of 400-1800 nm and 86% in the range of 2000-6000 nm). Finally, a physical model is established to discover the mechanism of the antireflection and infrared effect and a theory of anti-infrared radiation. This research provides a new idea and method supporting the stealth technology and materials, which improves the efficiency of anti-infrared detection and makes it feasible to be applied in military, detection, and stealth technology.

Electromagnetic wave (EMW)-absorbing materials have a great impact on civil use and national defense. In this paper, a novel composite, RGO@6CoTe 2 -300 (the mass ratio of reduced graphene oxide to CoTe 2 is 1:6, annealed at 300 °C), has been obtained through a facile melt-diffusion method and solvothermal method. The as-prepared samples have shown excellent reflection losses (RL) and effective adsorption bandwidth (EAB) by controlling the loading of CoTe 2 and the annealing temperature. The sample has exhibited a RL of -62.2 dB at 13.04 GHz with the matching thickness of 3.53 mm, and the EAB reaches 8.2 GHz at 2-18 GHz. Moreover, excellent terahertz (THz) absorption property is also obtained at 0.2-2.0 THz. A RL of 54.07 dB is acquired, and the EAB covers 100% of the entire measured bandwidth. Thus, RGO@6CoTe 2 -300 can be considered as a promising EMW absorption material in both gigahertz and terahertz band ranges.

Inorganic lead halide perovskite CsPbIBr 2 possesses good stability with a suitable band gap for tandem solar cells. Decreasing the defect concentration and improving the film quality is crucial to further increase the power conversion efficiency of CsPbIBr 2 solar cells. Here, the crystallization dynamics of CsPbIBr 2 films is regulated by introducing the volatile organic salt, formamidinium acetate (FAAc) into the precursor solution. It is found that FAAc slows the crystallization process of CsPbIBr 2 films and pinhole-free films with large grains and smooth surfaces are obtained. The defect concentration of the films is decreased and the nonradiative recombination is significantly inhibited. By improving the film quality, the FAAc remarkably enhances the efficiency of CsPbIBr 2 solar cells. The champion device delivers a power conversion efficiency of 9.44% and exhibits higher stability than the reference device. This finding provides an effective strategy for reducing defects, suppressing the recombination, and improving the performance of CsPbIBr 2 solar cells.

Au nanoingots, on which an Au nanosphere is accurately placed in an open Au shell, are synthesized through a controllable hydrothermal method. The prepared Au nanoingots exhibit an adjustable cavity structure, strong plasmon coupling, tunable magnetic plasmon resonance, and prominent photocatalytic and SERS performances. Au nanoingots exhibit two resonance peaks in the extinction spectrum, one (around 550 nm) is ascribed to electric dipole resonance coming from the central Au, and the other one (650-800 nm) is ascribed to the magnetic dipole resonance originating from the open Au shell. Numerical simulations verify that the intense electric and magnetic fields locate in the bowl-shaped nanogap between the Au nanosphere and shell, and they can be further optimized by changing the size of the outer Au shell. Au nanoingots with the largest shell have the strongest electric field because of large-area plasmon coupling, while Au nanoingots with the largest shell opening size have the strongest magnetic field. As a result, the structure-adjustable Au nanoingots show a high tunability and enhancement of catalytic reduction of p -nitrophenol and SERS detection of Rhodamine B. Specially, Au nanoingots with the largest shell size exhibit the highest catalytic activity and Raman signals at 532 nm excitation. However, Au nanoingots with the largest shell opening size have the highest photocatalytic activity with light irradiation (λ > 420 nm) and exhibit the best SERS performance at 785 nm excitation.

A novel strategy for preparing universal antifogging and antimicrobial coating is reported by the means of one-step coating and Ag nanoparticle (AgNP) formation in situ. A series of hydrophilic glycopolymers including poly( N -3,4-dihydroxybenzenethyl methacrylamide- co -2-deoxy-2-(methacrylamido)glucopyranose) (P1s) and poly( N -3,4-dihydroxybenzenethyl methacrylamide- co -methacrylic acid -co- 2-deoxy-2-(methacrylamido)glucopyranose) (P2s) were synthesized by sunlight-induced reverse addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. With the ability to strongly immobilize onto organic and inorganic surfaces (i.e., glass slide, silicon wafer, and polycarbonate) via catechol groups, P1s are very convenient to form superhydrophilic and transparent thin coatings, which result in a unique antifogging property. Additionally, the antimicrobial property is realized by in situ AgNPs forming P2 coatings, facilitated by the presence of carboxyl groups and catechol groups in the polymer chain, rendering it superior antimicrobial activity against both Gram-negative Escherichia coli and Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus microorganisms. This antifogging and antimicrobial thin coating shows strong prospects in medical and optical devices, with the extra benefits of avoiding potential pathogen infection in vitro or while in storage.

Rational design and convenient preparation of freestanding, hierarchical, and porous composites consisting of three-dimensional (3D) conductive carbon and low-dimension nanostructures with well-defined morphology and direct application as electrodes in rechargeable batteries are challenging. Herein, a freestanding, hierarchical, and porous composite composed of bilayered Na x V 2 O 5 · n H 2 O(NVO) nanobelts, carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) with a 3D cross-linked structure is prepared by simple one-pot hydrothermal self-assembly and vacuum filtration. The unique hierarchical nanoarchitecture of the hybrid one-dimensional (1D) (NVO nanobelts) and 3D (rGO/CNT) scaffold provides efficient pathways for ion/electron transportation as well as an elastic medium to buffer large volume change of the bilayered NVO nanobelts during cycling. The materials have excellent electrochemical properties as cathodes in the nonaqueous K-ion batteries (KIBs) and aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs). In the nonaqueous KIBs, the freestanding composite exhibits a high capacity of 119.9 mA h g -1 at 0.1 A g -1 , a rate capability of 53.2 mA h g -1 at 3 A g -1 , and a superior cycling stability of 59.7 mA h g -1 at 0.5 mA g -1 after 600 cycles. In the AZIBs, a capacity of 459.1 mA h g -1 at 0.5 A g -1 , a rate capability of 352.5 mA h g -1 at 10 A g -1 , and 83.1% retention after 1800 cycles at 10 A g -1 are observed. Our results reveal the advantages of the 3D rGO/CNT platform for 1D vanadium-based oxide nanostructures and provide insights into the design and preparation of efficient cathode materials in high-performance AZIBs and nonaqueous KIBs.

The porous and elastic reduced graphene aerogel (rGA) is a promising active material for piezoresistive pressure sensors (PRSs) to realize an electronic skin. Due to the specific working mechanism and the limitation of the rGA's monolithic conductive network, the PRSs based on rGA suffer from a limited change of resistance with mechanical deformation, so they show poor sensitivity and cannot detect low pressures. Here we aim to improve the sensitivity of the PRS and make it suitable for a low-pressure system (0.5-8 kPa) through an effective method. The monolithic rGA is broken into small pieces by cutting (named as CGA). The sensitivity of the PRS based on CGA can be improved by 10 times that of the uncut rGA (named as UCGA). The resistance variation ratio of CGA (0.96) is 1.45 times of the resistance variation ratio of the UCGA (0.66). By using a package of elastic polypropylene thin films (PP), the cycle stability performance of CGA remains stable after 4200 cycles. The CGA can detect the pulse of a human being with sensitivity higher than the UCGA and the ordinary sensors. This method is simple, effective, and universal to improve the sensitivity of PRS based on porous and elastic materials.

The porous microstructure of scaffolds is an essential consideration for tissue engineering, which plays an important role for cell adhesion, migration, and proliferation. It is crucial to choose optimum pore sizes of scaffolds for the treatment of various damaged tissues. Therefore, the proper porosity is the significant factor that should be considered when designing tissue scaffolds. Herein, we develop an improved emulsion template method to fabricate gelatin-based scaffolds with controllable pore structure. Gelatin droplets were first prepared by emulsification and then solidified by genipin to prepare gelatin microspheres. The microspheres were used as a template for the fabrication of porous scaffolds, which were gathered and tightened together by dialdehyde amylose. The results showed that emulsification can produce gelatin microspheres with narrow size distribution. The size of gelatin microspheres was easily controlled by adjusting the concentration of gelatin and the speed of mechanical agitation. The gelatin-based scaffolds presented macroporous and interconnected structure. It is interesting that the pore size of scaffolds was directly related to the size of gelatin microspheres, displaying the same trend of change in size. It indicated that the gelatin microspheres can be used as the proper template to fabricate gelatin-based scaffold with a desired pore structure. In addition, the gelatin-based scaffolds possessed good blood compatibility and cytocompatibility. Overall, the gelatin-based scaffolds exhibited great potential in tissue engineering.

It is a highly expected avenue to construct dual-carbon sodium-ion hybrid capacitors (SIHCs) using hierarchical porous carbon with interconnected pores, high accessible surface area, and disordered carbon frameworks for ameliorating the sluggish kinetics of SIHCs. In this work, a novel dual-carbon SIHCs system with homologous enhanced kinetics hierarchical porous hollow carbon spheres (HPCS) and hierarchical porous hollow carbon bowls (HPCB) as the anode and cathode is constructed for the first time. In a Na half-cell configuration, the HPCS anode synthesized through a facile one-pot in-situ template route demonstrates a superior reversible capacity as well as outstanding rate capability and cycleability, and the HPCB cathode fabricated by chemical activation of HPCS exhibits excellent capacitive behaviors. Thanks to superior properties and structures of the anode and cathode, the constructed novel dual-carbon SIHCs present an exceptionally high energy/power density (128.5 Wh kg -1 and 11.9 kW kg -1 ), along with a long cycling lifespan with retained morphology. This study on the kinetics of enhanced dual-carbon SIHCs opens a new avenue for optimizing the microstructure of hierarchical porous carbon and constructing new type of high-performance SIHCs systems.

Alongside the rise in fully automated equipment and wearable devices, there is currently a high demand for optically transparent and flexible gas sensors operating at room temperature. Nanoparticle films are ideal H 2 -sensing materials that can be coupled with flexible substrates because of their discrete nanogranular structure and unique interparticle electrical responsiveness. In this work, we present an optically transparent and flexible H 2 sensor based on a Pd nanoparticle film, prepared on a polyethylene terephthalate sheet using a straightforward nanocluster deposition technique. Hundreds of bending cycles demonstrated that the sensor has good electrical stability and mechanical robustness without significant degradation in H 2 -sensing performance. The H 2 -sensing behaviors under bent state were systematically evaluated. The loading of tensile and compressive strains under bent state produced a positive and negative influence, respectively, on the sensing performances. The possible influence mechanism of the tensile and compressive strains on the H 2 -sensing performance was attributed to the changes in the percolation network topology and the interparticle space induced by the strains. The ability to detect a H 2 concentration as low as 15 ppm, dynamic response range as wide as 0-10%, and sub-10 s response time was achieved. In addition, the sensor can be operated in the relative humidity range of 0-90% at room temperature. These results demonstrate that the sensor exhibits significant potential for next-generation transparent and flexible H 2 detectors.

Dopant-free carrier-selective contacts are becoming increasingly attractive for application in silicon solar cells because of the depositions for their fabrication being simpler and occurring at lower temperatures. However, these contacts are limited by poor thermal and environmental stability. In this contribution, the use of the conductive high work function of cuprous iodide, with its characteristic thermal and ambient stability, has enabled a hole-selective contact for p-type silicon solar cells because of the large conduction band offset and small valence offset at the CuI/p-Si interface. The contact resistivity (≈30 mΩ·cm 2 ) of the Ag/CuI (20 nm)/p-Si contact after annealing to 200 °C represents the CuI-based hole-selective contact with low resistance and high thermal stability. Microscopic images and elemental mapping of the Ag/CuI/p-Si contact interface revealed that a nonuniform, continuous CuI layer separates the Ag electrode and p-type Si. Thermal treatment at 200 °C results in the intermixing of the Ag and CuI layers. As a result, the 200 °C thermal process improves the efficiency (20.7%) and stability of the p-Si solar cells featuring partial CuI hole-selective contact. Furthermore, the devices employing the CuI/Ag contact are thermally stable upon annealing to temperatures up to 350 °C. These results not only demonstrate the use of metal iodide instead of metal oxides as hole-selective contacts for efficient silicon solar cells but also have important implications regarding industrial feasibility and longevity for deployment in the field.

A high recombination rate and high thermal budget for aluminum (Al) back surface field are found in the industrial p-type silicon solar cells. Direct metallization on lightly doped p-type silicon, however, exhibits a large Schottky barrier for the holes on the silicon surface because of Fermi-level pinning effect. As a result, low-temperature-deposited, dopant-free chromium trioxide (CrO x , x < 3) with high stability and high performance is first applied in a p-type silicon solar cell as a hole-selective contact at the rear surface. By using 4 nm CrO x between the p-type silicon and Ag, we achieve a reduction of the contact resistivity for the contact of Ag directly on p-type silicon. For further improvement, we utilize a CrO x (2 nm)/Ag (30 nm)/CrO x (2 nm) multilayer film on the contact between Ag and p-type crystalline silicon (c-Si) to achieve a lower contact resistance (40 mΩ·cm 2 ). The low-resistivity Ohmic contact is attributed to the high work function of the uniform CrO x film and the depinning of the Fermi level of the SiO x layer at the silicon interface. Implementing the advanced hole-selective contacts with CrO x /Ag/CrO x on the p-type silicon solar cell results in a power conversion efficiency of 20.3%, which is 0.1% higher than that of the cell utilizing 4 nm CrO x . Compared with the commercialized p-type solar cell, the novel CrO x -based hole-selective transport material opens up a new possibility for c-Si solar cells using high-efficiency, low-temperature, and dopant-free deposition techniques.

The rapid development of microscaled piezoelectric energy harvesters has provided a simple and highly efficient way for building self-powered sensor systems through harvesting the mechanical energy from the ambient environment. In this work, a self-powered microfluidic sensor that can harvest the mechanical energy of the fluid and simultaneously monitor their characteristics was fabricated by integrating the flexible piezoelectric poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) nanofibers with the well-designed microfluidic chips. Those devices could generate open-circuit high output voltage up to 1.8 V when a droplet of water is flowing past the suspended PVDF nanofibers and result in their periodical deformations. The impulsive output voltage signal allowed them to be utilized for droplets or bubbles counting in the microfluidic systems. Furthermore, the devices also exhibited self-powered sensing behavior due to the decreased voltage amplitude with increasing input pressure and liquid viscosity. The drop of output voltage could be attributed to the variation of flow condition and velocity of the droplets, leading to the reduced deformation of the piezoelectric PVDF layer and the decrease of the generated piezoelectric potential.

This report describes a technique for fabricating dual-structured hierarchical surface topography on the surface of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) films through simply replicating prefabricated patterns and wrinkling PDMS films. To enhance the biocompatibility of PDMS films, we synthesize a biocompatible dopamine-glycopolymer, which is utilized to modify the chemical feature of the PDMS surface. Dopamine component in this copolymer is introduced for the formation of a carbohydrate layer on the surface of PDMS films because of its excellent adhesion. The carbohydrate component in this copolymer enhances the interactions between cells and PDMS films. We investigate the influence of the chemical and topographical surface properties of the extracellular matrix on fibroblast cell growth. The coupling of the dopamine-glycopolymer coating and hierarchical topography produces the best induction effect on the alignment of cells.

The group IV-VI compound tin selenide (SnSe) has recently attracted particular interest due to its unexpectedly low thermal conductivity and high power factor and shows great promise for thermoelectric applications. With an orthorhombic lattice structure, SnSe displays intriguing anisotropic properties due to the low symmetry of the puckered in-plane lattice structure. When thermoelectric materials, such as SnSe, have decreased dimensionality, their thermoelectric conversion efficiency may be improved due to increased power factor and decreased thermal conductivity. Therefore, it is necessary to elucidate the complete optical and electrical anisotropies of SnSe nanostructures in realizing the material's advantages in high-performance devices. Here, we synthesize single-crystal SnSe nanoplates (NPs) using the chemical vapor deposition method. The SnSe NPs' polarized Raman spectra exhibit an angular dependence that reveals the crystal's anomalous anisotropic light-matter interaction. The Raman's anisotropic response has a dependence upon the incident light polarization, photon, and phonon energy, arising from the anisotropic electron-photon and electron-phonon interactions in the SnSe NPs. Finally, angle-resolved charge-transport measurements indicate strong anisotropic conductivity of the SnSe NPs, fully elucidating the anisotropic properties necessary for ultrathin SnSe in electronic, thermoelectric, and optoelectronic devices.

Graphene and other layered materials, such as transition metal dichalcogenides, have rapidly established themselves as exceptional building blocks for optoelectronic applications because of their unique properties and atomically thin nature. The ability to stack them into van der Waals (vdWs) heterostructures with new functionality has opened a new platform for fundamental research and device applications. Nevertheless, near-infrared (NIR) photodetectors based on layered semiconductors are rarely realized. In this work, we fabricate a graphene-MoTe 2 -graphene vertical vdWs heterostructure on a SiO 2 /p + -Si substrate by a facile and reliable site-controllable transfer method and apply it for photodetection from the visible to NIR wavelength range. Compared to the layered semiconductor photodetectors reported thus far, the graphene-MoTe 2 -graphene photodetector has a superior performance, including high photoresponsivity (∼110 mA W -1 at 1064 nm and 205 mA W -1 at 473 nm), high external quantum efficiency (EQE; ∼12.9% at 1064 nm and ∼53.8% at 473 nm), rapid response and recovery processes (a rise time of 24 μs and a fall time of 46 μs under 1064 nm illumination), and free from an external source-drain power supply. We have employed scanning photocurrent microscopy to investigate the photocurrent generation in this heterostructure under various back-gate voltages and found that the two Schottky barriers between the graphenes and MoTe 2 play an important role in the photocurrent generation. In addition, the vdWs heterostructure has a uniform photoresponsive area. The photoresponsivity and EQE of the photodetector can be modulated by the back-gate (p + -Si) voltage. We compared the responsivities of thin and thick flakes and found that the responsivity had a strong dependence on the thickness. The heterostructure has promising applications in future novel optoelectronic devices, enabling next-generation high-responsivity, high-speed, flexible, and transparent NIR devices.

Monolayer MoS2, with fascinating mechanical, electrical, and optical properties, has generated enormous scientific curiosity and industrial interest. Controllable and scalable synthesis of monolayer MoS2 on various desired substrates has significant meaning in both basic scientific research and device application. Recent years have witnessed many advances in the direct synthesis of single-crystalline MoS2 flakes or their polycrystalline aggregates on numerous diverse substrates, such as SiO2-Si, mica, sapphire, h-BN, and SrTiO3, etc. In this work, we used the dual-temperature-zone atmospheric-pressure chemical vapor deposition method to directly synthesize large-scale monolayer MoS2 on fused silica, the most ordinary transparent insulating material in daily life. We systematically investigated the photoluminescence (PL) properties of monolayer MoS2 on fused silica and SiO2-Si substrates, which have different thermal conductivity coefficients and thermal expansion coefficients. We found that there exists a stronger strain on monolayer MoS2 grown on fused silica, and the strain becomes more obvious as temperature decreases. Moreover, the monolayer MoS2 grown on fused silica exhibits the unique trait of a fractal shape with tortuous edges and has stronger adsorbability. The monolayer MoS2 grown on fused silica may find application in sensing, energy storage, and transparent optoelectronics, etc.

Tungsten trioxide dihydrate (WO3·2H2O) nanoplates are prepared by in situ anodic oxidation of tungsten disulfide (WS2) film on carbon fiber paper (CFP). The WO3·2H2O/WS2 hybrid catalyst exhibits excellent synergistic effects which facilitate the kinetics of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The electrochromatic effect takes place via hydrogen intercalation into WO3·2H2O. This process is accelerated by the desirable proton diffusion coefficient in the layered WO3·2H2O. Hydrogen spillover from WO3·2H2O to WS2 occurs via atomic polarization caused by the electric field of the charges on the planar defect or edge active sites of WS2. The optimized hybrid catalyst presents a geometrical current density of 100 mA cm(-2) at 152 mV overpotential with a Tafel slope of ∼54 mV per decade, making the materials one of the most active nonprecious metal HER catalysts.

Ag2O/Bi2O2CO3 p-n heterojunctions are prepared with commercial Bi2O2CO3 as precursor via a simple photosynthesis process. The obtained Ag2O/Bi2O2CO3 p-n heterojunctions show higher photocatalytic activity than that of pure n-Bi2O2CO3, and the obtained Ag2O/Bi2O2CO3 (AB-4) heterojunction exhibits the best photocatalytic activity under visible light (λ > 400 nm), with which Rhodamine B, methyl blue and methyl orange can be completely degraded within 12 min. Photoluminescent spectra and photoelectrochemical measurement further indicate that the Ag2O/Bi2O2CO3 p-n heterojunctions greatly enhance the charge generation and suppress the charge recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, which would be beneficial to improve their photocatalytic activity.

Modulation of anatase toward highly active facets has been attracting much attention, but the mechanism and photoactivity are still ambiguous. Here we demonstrate the inherent mechanisms for facets nucleation and morphology evolution, and clarify some vital influences of facets and surface nature on the photoactivity. Simply tuning the Ti/F ratio in the synthetic mixture leads to single anatase crystal exposed with different facets like {001}, {010}, or {110}. And complex sphere structure exposed with {001} facets can be formed by secondary nucleation and growth. Prolonging the hydrothermal treatment time causes selective etching on {001} facets, whereas defluorination via thermal calcination produces many pores on the surface. The photodegradation of positively and negatively charged, and zwitterionic dyes indicates that the type of reactant, adsorption mode and surface area play significant roles in photocatalysis. This work makes a step toward understanding the formation of facet-mediated structure and designing highly active materials for environmental remediation, hydrogen production, and dye-sensitized solar cells., (© 2012 American Chemical Society)

Impurity-dependent photoresponse properties of semiconductor nanostructures are studied for the first time in the photodetectors (PDs) made from intrinsic (i-) and extrinsic n-type single CdSe nanobelts (NBs). Both ohmic and Schottky contact based CdSe NB PDs were studied. The sizes of i- and n- NBs were purposely chosen to be nearly identical to minimize the size-dependent effect. Our experimental results demonstrate that i-CdSe NBs are more suitable for fast and sensitive PD applications, while n-CdSe NBs are more advantageous for high-gain PD applications. The different photoresponse properties result mainly from the impurity induced traps inside the CdSe NBs. This conclusion can be applicable to other semiconductor nanomaterials. Moreover, we have achieved short response/recovery times (∼15/31 μs) and a high photosensitivity (∼100) simultaneously from the i-CdSe NB PDs under a 3500 Hz pulsed illumination. This may be the best reported result so far in the effort of getting fast speed and high photosensitivity simultaneously from nanostructure based PDs for practical applications., (© 2011 American Chemical Society)
