Transient electronics technology has enabled the programmed disintegration of functional devices, paving the way for environmentally sustainable management of electronic wastes as well as facilitating the exploration of novel device concepts. While a variety of inorganic and/or organic materials have been employed as media to introduce transient characteristics in electronic devices, they have been mainly limited to function as passive device components. Herein, we report that calcium (Ca) alginate, a natural biopolymer, exhibits multifunctionalities of introducing light-triggered transient characteristics as well as constituting active components in electronic devices integrated with two-dimensional (2D) molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) layers. Ca 2+ ions-based alginate electrolyte films are prepared through hydrolysis reactions and are subsequently incorporated with riboflavin, a natural photosensitizer, for the light-driven dissolution of 2D MoS 2 layers. The alginate films exhibit strain-sensitive triboelectricity, confirming the presence of abundant mobile Ca 2+ ions, which enables them to be active components of 2D MoS 2 field-effect transistors (FETs) functioning as electrolyte top-gates. The alginate-integrated 2D MoS 2 FETs display intriguing transient characteristics of spontaneous degradation upon ultraviolet-to-visible light illumination as well as water exposure. Such transient characteristics are demonstrated even in ambient conditions with natural sunlight, highlighting the versatility of the developed approach. This study emphasizes a relatively unexplored aspect of combining naturally abundant polymers with emerging near atom-thickness semiconductors toward realizing unconventional and transformative device functionalities.

The proliferation of printed electronic devices is feeding the growth of the Internet of Things, with devices deployed everywhere to collect and communicate data. At the same time, the increase in low-cost disposable devices is a cause for serious environmental concern. In particular, widely used plastic substrates such as poly(ethylene terephthalate) are persistent hazards to the environment. Paper is promising as a greener substrate for printed electronics because it is biodegradable and sourced from renewable materials as well as being low cost and compatible with roll-to-roll printing. However, the porous microstructure of paper promotes wicking of functional inks, leading to poor electrical performance and printing resolution. Hydrophobic coatings applied to the surface of paper create a planarized, printable surface, but these materials may compromise biodegradability and/or recyclability. This paper describes a new resist-free patterning method for printed paper-based electronics that takes advantage of the porous structure of paper. Debossed contact printing uses the pressure from a debossing tip to compress the porous structure of paper and create a patterned relief structure. Printing functional inks with an unpatterned roller deposits ink only on the raised regions of the relief structure. We demonstrate debossed contact printing of silver, carbon black, and conducting polymer inks and show that this new fabrication method is suitable for the fabrication of printed devices with dense features. We demonstrate the fabrication of antennas and patterned electrodes for RFID and smart wallpaper applications, respectively.

Semiconducting polymers are at the forefront of next-generation organic electronics due to their robust mechanical and optoelectronic properties. However, their extended π-conjugation often leads to materials with low solubilities in common organic solvents, thus requiring processing in high-boiling-point and toxic halogenated solvents to generate thin-film devices. To address this environmental concern, a natural product-inspired side-chain engineering approach was used to incorporate galactose-containing moieties into semiconducting polymers toward improved processability in greener solvents. Novel isoindigo-based polymers with different ratios of galactose-containing side chains were synthesized to improve the solubilities of the organic semiconductors in alcohol-based solvents. The addition of carbohydrate-containing side chains to π-conjugated polymers was found to considerably impact the intermolecular aggregation of the materials and their microstructures in the solid state as confirmed by atomic force microscopy and grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering. The charge transport characteristics of the new semiconductors were evaluated by the fabrication of organic field-effect transistors prepared from both toxic halogenated and greener alcohol-based solvents. Importantly, the incorporation of carbohydrate-containing side chains was shown to have very little detrimental impact on the electronic properties of the polymer when processed from green solvents.

Today's consumer electronics are made from nonrenewable and toxic components. They are also rigid, bulky, and manufactured in an energy-inefficient manner via CO 2 -generating routes. Though petroleum-based polymers such as polyethylene terephthalate and polyethylene naphthalate can address the rigidity issue, they have a large carbon footprint and generate harmful waste. Scalable routes for manufacturing electronics that are both flexible and ecofriendly (Fleco) could address the challenges in the field. Ideally, such substrates must incorporate into electronics without compromising device performance. In this work, we demonstrate that a new type of wood-based [nanocellulose (NC)] material made via nanosilicate (NS) reinforcement can yield flexible electronics that can bend and roll without loss of electrical function. Specifically, the NSs interact electrostatically with NC to reinforce thermal and mechanical properties. For instance, films containing 34 wt % of NS displayed an increased young's modulus (1.5 times), thermal stability (290 → 310 °C), and a low coefficient of thermal expansion (40 ppm/K). These films can also easily be separated and renewed into new devices through simple and low-energy processes. Moreover, we used very cheap and environmentally friendly NC from American Value Added Pulping (AVAP) technology, American Process, and therefore, the manufacturing cost of our NS-reinforced NC paper is much cheaper ($0.016 per dm -2 ) than that of conventional NC-based substrates. Looking forward, the methodology highlighted herein is highly attractive as it can unlock the secrets of Fleco electronics and transform otherwise bulky, rigid, and "difficult-to-process" rigid circuits into more aesthetic and flexible ones while simultaneously bringing relief to an already-overburdened ecosystem.

Flexible pressure sensors have received wide attention because of their potential applications in wearable electronics and electronic skins (e-skins). However, the high performance of the pressure sensors relies principally on the introduction of complex surface microstructures, which often involves either complicated procedures or costly microfabrication methods. Moreover, these devices predominantly use synthetic polymers as flexible substrates, which are generally nonbiodegradable or not ecofriendly. Here, we report a facile and scalable processing strategy to convert naturally rigid wood into reduced graphene oxide (rGO)-modified flexible wood (FW/rGO) via saw cutting, chemical treatment, and rGO coating, resulting in high-performance wood-based flexible piezoresistive pressure sensors. Benefiting from the largely deformable ribbon-like surface microstructures, the obtained wood-based pressure sensor displayed a high sensitivity of 1.85 kPa -1 over a broad linear range up to 60 kPa and showed high stability over 10 000 cyclic pressings. The favorable sensing performance of the pressure sensor allows for accurate recognition of finger movements, acoustic vibrations, and real-time pulse waves. Moreover, a large-area pressure sensor array has been successfully assembled on one piece of flexible wood for spatial pressure mapping. The proposed strategy of directly using natural wood for high-performance flexible pressure sensors is simple, low-cost, sustainable, and scalable, opening up a new avenue for the development of next-generation wearable electronics and e-skins.

The use of biocompatible and biodegradable materials in electronic devices can be an important trend in the development of the next-generation green electronics. In addition, by integrating the advantages of low power consumption, low-cost processing, and flexibility, organic synaptic devices will be promising elements for the construction of brain-inspired computers. However, previously reported electrolyte-gated synaptic transistors are mainly made of non-biocompatible and non-biodegradable electrolytes. Woods are widely considered as one kind of sustainable and renewable materials. We found that wood-derived cellulose nanopapers have ionic conductivity and, therefore, can be used as dielectric materials for organic synaptic transistors. The fabricated wood-derived cellulose nanopapers exhibit decent ionic conductivity of 7.3 × 10 -4 S m -1 and a high lateral coupling effective capacitance of 18.65 nF cm -2 at 30 Hz. The laterally coupled organic synaptic transistors using wood-derived cellulose nanopapers as the dielectric layer present excellent transistor performances at the operating voltage below 1.5 V. More significantly, some important synaptic behaviors, such as excitatory postsynaptic current, signal-filtering characteristics, and dendritic integration are successfully simulated in our synaptic transistors. Because the development of electronic devices with biocompatible and biodegradable materials is essential, this work may inspire new directions for the development of "green" neuromorphic electronics.

Green electronics on biodegradable substrates from natural sources have gained broad interest because of the advantages of being biodegradable, recyclable, sustainable, and cost-efficient. This study presents a low-cost, yet simple extraction and purification method that explores aqueous extraction and precipitation with ethanol for the synthesis of galactomannan films. In salient contrast to the other materials of natural origin, the process to obtain galactomannan films is energy efficient and environmentally friendly. As an alternative biodegradable material, galactomannan has direct relevance to the recent emerging biodegradable or transient electronics. The galactomannan substrate with temperature sensors and electrodes fabricated from zinc, a biodegradable material noted for its essential biological function, demonstrates a high-precision measurement of temperature and high-fidelity monitoring of electrophysiological signals (electromyogram or electrocardiogram). The resulting disposable sensors disappear without a trace in water and produce environmentally benign end products that could even be used for alkaline soil amendments. The set of materials explored in this study is also stable in organic solutions, enabling solvent-based fabrication that may be combined with recent advances in additive manufacturing techniques for a novel manufacturing method.

Flexible electronics have found useful applications in both the scientific and industrial communities. However, substrates traditionally used for flexible electronics, such as plastic, cause many environmental issues. Therefore, a transparent substrate made from natural materials provides a promising alternative because it can be degraded in nature. The traditional bottom-up fabrication method for transparent paper is expensive, environmentally unfriendly, and time-consuming. In this work, for the first time, we developed a top-down method to fabricate isotropic, transparent paper directly from anisotropic wood. The top-down method includes two steps: a delignification process to bleach the wood by lignin removal and a pressing process for removing light-reflecting and -scattering sources. The resulting isotropic, transparent paper has high transmittance of about 90% and high haze over 80% and is demonstrated as a nature-disposable substrate for electronic/optical devices. Adjusting the pressing ratio used changes the density of the resulting paper, which tunes the microstructure-related properties of the isotropic, transparent paper. This top-down method is simple, fast, environmentally friendly, and cost-effective, which can greatly promote the development of paper-based green optical and electronic devices.
