Owning to its various advantages, the lithium-sulfur battery is one of the research hot spots for new energy storage systems. Diverse hollow structures with specific morphologies have been used as the sulfur host materials to adsorb or/and catalyze the polysulfides, and can in particular concurrently inhibit the volume expansion during electrochemical processes in lithium-sulfur batteries. However, hollow space with a large volume will restrict the performance of the cell under high sulfur area loading, which is a very important indicator for the practical applications of the lithium-sulfur battery. Here, we report a nano thin cage cobalt acid zinc (ZnCo 2 O 4 ) with limited hollow space as the cathode catalyst for lithium-sulfur batteries, which greatly reduces the electrode volume occupied by the hollow structure. The hollow volume of these thin cages is much smaller than those of the normally reported hollow materials in the literatue. The electrochemical performance of lithium-sulfur batteries with ZnCo 2 O 4 thin cages could greatly improve due to the unique structure and the synergistic adsorption/catalytic effect of Zn/Co sites, especially at an ultrahigh S area load. Under a high S loading of 8 mg cm -2 , the cell could keep a reversible capacity of 600 mAh g -1 after 500 cycles. Even at a sulfur loading of 10 mg cm -2 , the cell still releases a discharge capacity of 1000 mAh g -1 which is equivalent of an area capacity of 10 mAh cm -2 . This work provides a feasible way to develop lithium sulfur batteries with a high area sulfur load. This idea provides a possible solution to develop a Li-S battery at high area S loading and move one step closer to the practical applications.

As one of the most attractive inorganics to improve the thermoelectric (TE) performance of the conducting polymers, tellurium (Te) has received intense concern due to its superior Seebeck coefficient ( S ). However, far less attention has been paid to polypyrrole (PPy)/Te TE composites to date. In this work, we present an innovative full-electrochemical method to architect PPy/Te TE composite films by sequentially depositing Te with large S and PPy with high electrical conductivity (σ). Consequently, the PPy/Te composite films achieved excellent TE performance, with the largest power factor (PF) reaching up to 234.3 ± 4.1 μW m -1 K -2 . To the best of our knowledge, this value approaches the reported highest PF record (240.3 ± 5.0 μW m -1 K -2 ) for PPy-based composites. This suggests that the modified full-electrochemical method is a feasible and effective strategy for achieving high-performance TE composite films, which would probably provide a general guideline for the design and preparation of excellent TE materials in the future.

The zinc-ion battery (ZIB) is a novel energy storage device, an attractive alternative to the lithium-ion battery. The frequently used aqueous electrolyte suffers from many problems such as zinc dendrites and leakage, which prompts hydrogel electrolytes and solid electrolytes as good replacements. However, hydrogel electrolytes are usually unstable, owing to water volatilization. Herein, a novel solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) utilizing coordination of zinc ions is designed and then introduced into an all-solid ZIB. Benefiting from the unique coordination structure between the polymer and zinc ions, the SPE shows outstanding flexibility, high ion conductivity, and self-healing properties. In addition, the imine bonds in the polymer allow the electrolyte to degrade in acid environments, endowing its recyclability. More importantly, solid-state ZIBs based on the polymer electrolytes exhibit an impressive cycling stability (125% capacity retention after 300 cycles) and a high coulombic efficiency (94% after 300 cycles). The results demonstrate the promising potentials of the developed SPEs that can be used in all-solid ZIBs.

A white-light-emitting ion gel composed of a poly[(2-(4-vinylphenyl)ethene-1,1,2-triyl)tribenzene- b -ethylene glycol- b -(2-(4-vinylphenyl)ethene-1,1,2-triyl)tribenzene] aggregation-induced emission (AIE) network and a poly([2,2':6',2″-terpyridin]-4'-yl methacrylate- co -methyl methacrylate) Eu 3+ -doped network was fabricated via a solution mixing process. This ion gel exhibits special multistimuli-responsive properties, and it can change its luminescent color by changing pH, temperature, or the solvent. The unique color-changing property is attributed to the different luminescent mechanisms of the AIE/Eu 3+ -doped polymer networks. The former is affected by changes in its aggregation state, while the latter is controlled by the dynamic metal-ligand cross-linking bonds. Furthermore, owing to the interpenetrating networks formed by the two polymers, the hybrid gel has both good mechanical strength and flexibility. It may be used in the fields of sensors, probes, and light-emitting materials.

A series of brush block copolymers (BBCPs) with polynorbornene backbones containing poly{2,5-bis[(4-methoxyphenyl)oxycarbonyl]styrene} (PMPCS, which is a rigid chain) and poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) side chains were synthesized by tandem ring-opening metathesis polymerizations. The weight fractions of PEO in BBCPs are similar, and the degrees of polymerization (DPs) of PEO side chains are the same while the DPs of PMPCS are different. The bulk self-assembling behaviors were studied by small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). The neat BBCPs cannot form ordered nanostructures. However, after the doping of lithium salt, the BBCPs self-assemble into lamellar (LAM) structures. When the DPs of the PEO and PMPCS side chains are similar, the LAM structure is more ordered, which is attributed to the more flat interface between PMPCS and PEO phases. The ionic conductivity (σ) values of the BBCP/lithium salt complex with the most ordered LAM structure at different temperatures were measured. The σ value increases with increasing temperature in the range of 40-200 °C, and the relationship between σ and T fits the Vogel-Tamman-Fulcher (VTF) equation. The σ value at 200 °C is 1.58 × 10 -3 S/cm, which is one of the highest values for PEO-based polymer electrolytes. These materials with high σ values at high temperatures may be used in high-temperature lithium ion batteries.
