Materials and devices that harvest acoustic energy can enable autonomous powering of microdevices and wireless sensors. However, traditional acoustic energy harvesters rely on brittle piezoceramics, which have restricted their use in wearable electronic devices. To address these limitations, this study involves the fabrication of acoustic harvesters using electrospinning of the piezoelectric polymer PVDF-TrFE onto fabric-based electrodes. Two-dimensional (2D) Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene flakes were used to induce polarization locking of the electrospun PVDF-TrFE for optimal electromechanical performance of PVDF-TrFE. The mechanically robust, lightweight, and flexible device was demonstrated to detect and harvest energy in the sound frequency range of 50 to 1000 Hz at sound levels between 60 and 95 dB, while exhibiting a high sensitivity of 37 VPa -1 , which is higher than previously reported values for PVDF-based sound harvesters. The maximum output power can reach 19 mW/cm 3 under 200 Hz and 95 dB. The development of this material opens a future pathway for powering small electronic devices, such as implantable biomedical devices, smart wearable technology, and remote Internet-of-Things devices.

The adhesion of sticky liquid foods to a contacting surface can cause many technical challenges. The food manufacturing sector is confronted with many critical issues that can be overcome with long-lasting and highly nonwettable coatings. Nanoengineered biomimetic surfaces with distinct wettability and tunable interfaces have elicited increasing interest for their potential use in addressing a broad variety of scientific and technological applications, such as antifogging, anti-icing, antifouling, antiadhesion, and anticorrosion. Although a large number of nature-inspired surfaces have emerged, food-safe nonwetted surfaces are still in their infancy, and numerous structural design aspects remain unexplored. This Review summarizes the latest scientific research regarding the key principles, fabrication methods, and applications of three important categories of nonwettable surfaces: superhydrophobic, liquid-infused slippery, and re-entrant structured surfaces. The Review is particularly focused on new insights into the antiwetting mechanisms of these nanopatterned structures and discovering efficient platform methodologies to guide their rational design when in contact with food materials. A detailed description of the current opportunities, challenges, and future scale-up possibilities of these nanoengineered surfaces in the food industry is also provided.

MXenes, two-dimensional (2D) transition-metal carbides and nitrides with high electrical conductivity, show outstanding potential for energy storage applications. However, the aggregation and restacking of 2D MXene nanosheets seriously decrease the performance of MXene-based electrodes. Instead of using high-cost artificial templates, herein, we select natural rubber (NR) latex-containing uniform sub-macroparticles as sacrificial templates and successfully construct three-dimensional interconnected porous MXene foam. This porous structure effectively prevents the restacking of MXene nanosheets and accelerates the transfer of electrolyte ions during charging and discharging, which significantly enhances capacitance and rate performance. By adjusting the loading of latex, we find that MXene foam (MXF)-70% provides both improved specific capacitance of 480 F g -1 at 2 mV s -1 and superior rate performance (42.1% residual at 1 V s -1 ) with excellent cycling stability of 97.1% capacitance retention after 10000 cycles at 50 mV s -1 . Additionally, the low cost of natural rubber latex provides an alternate route to produce foam electrodes on a large scale for portable and integrated supercapacitors.

Nanobionics-driven synthesis offers a process of designing and synthesizing functional materials on a nanoscale based on the structures and functions of biological systems. An approach such as this is environmentally friendly and sustainable, providing a viable option for synthesizing functional nanomaterials for catalysis and nanoelectronic components. In this work, we present a facile and green nanobionics approach to synthesize plasmonic H x MoO 3 by interacting chloroplasts extracted from spinach with two-dimensional (2D) MoO 3 nanoflakes. The generated plasmon resonances can be modulated in the visible wavelength ranges, and the efficiency to form the plasmonic materials is enhanced by 90% within 45 min of light excitation compared to reactions without chloroplast involvement. Such a characteristic is ascribed to the interfacial carrier dynamics between the two entities in the reactions, in which highly doped metal oxides with quasi-metallic properties can be formed to generate optical absorptions in the visible light region. The green synthesized plasmonic materials show high photocatalytic activities without the coupling of semiconductors, providing a promising nanoelectronics unit, based on the nanobionics-driven synthesized plasmonic materials.

In recent years, structural batteries have received great attention for future automotive application in which a load-bearing car panel is used as an energy storage. However, based on the current advances, achieving both high ionic conductivity and mechanical performance has remained a challenge. To address this challenge, this study introduces a cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) reinforced structural battery electrolyte (CSBE) consisting of CNC, triethylene glycol dimethyl ether (TriG) electrolyte containing a quasi-solid additive, e.g., cyclohexanedimethanol (CHDM), in a vinyl ester polymer. This green and renewable CSBE electrolyte system was in situ polymerized via reaction induced phase transition to form a high performance multidimensional channel electrolyte to be used in structural carbon fiber-based battery fabrication. The effect of various concentrations of CNC on the electrolyte ionic conductivity and mechanical properties was obtained in their relation to intermolecular interactions, interpreted by FTIR, Raman, Li NMR results. Compared to the neat SBE system, the optimized CSBE nanocomposite containing 2 wt % CNC shows a remarkable ionic conductivity of 1.1 × 10 -3 S cm -1 at 30 °C, which reveals ∼300% improvement, alongside higher thermal stability. Based on the FTIR, Raman, Li NMR results, the content of CNC in the CSBE structure plays a crucial role not only in the formation of cellulose network skeleton but also in physical interaction with polymer matrix, providing an efficient Li + pathway through the electrolyte matrix. The carbon fiber composite was fabricated by 2 wt % CNC reinforced SBE electrolyte to evaluate as a battery half-cell. The results demonstrated that by addition of 2 wt % CNC into SBE system, 7.6% and 33.9% improvements were achieved in specific capacity at 0.33 C and tensile strength, respectively, implying outstanding potential of ion conduction and mechanical load transfer between the carbon fibers and the electrolyte.

Nanoparticles are popular delivery vehicles, but their diffusional release results in inconstant drug delivery. Here, we flatten the delivery profile into a more constant, zero-order profile. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is attached to photoactive titanium dioxide nanoparticles and loaded into a nanofibrous self-assembling peptide (SAP) hydrogel. Different UV exposure conditions show three distinct profiles, including a counterintuitive decrease in release after UV exposure. We propose that the adsorption of the freed growth factor onto the hydrogel nanofibers affects release. Nanoparticles diffuse from the hydrogel readily, carrying the bound growth factor, but the freed growth factor (released from the nanoparticles by UV) instead interacts with─and is released less readily from─the hydrogel. UV shifts growth factor from nanoparticles to the hydrogel, therefore changing the diffusional release. Through midpoint UV exposure, we achieve a flattened delivery profile─unusual for diffusion─by changing in situ the amount of growth factor bound to the diffusing nanoparticles. With nanoparticle diffusion alone, we observed an increasing release profile with 36% of release in the first 6 h and 64% in the second 6 h. With midway UV exposure, this was controlled to 49 and 51%, respectively. The release of an unbound (soluble) control growth factor, glial cell-line derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF), was not affected by UV treatment, demonstrating the potential for independent control of temporal delivery profiles in a multiagent material.

Molybdenum carbide and nitride nanocrystals have been widely recognized as ideal electrocatalyst materials for water splitting. Furthermore, the interfacial engineering strategy can effectively tune their physical and chemical properties to improve performance. Herein, we produced N-doped molybdenum carbide nanosheets on carbonized melamine (N-doped Mo 2 C@CN) and 3D hollow Mo 2 C-Mo 2 N nanostructures (3D H-Mo 2 C-Mo 2 N) with tuneable interfacial properties via high-temperature treatment. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy reveals that Mo 2 C and Mo 2 N nanocrystals in 3D hollow nanostructures are chemically bonded with each other and produce stable heterostructures. The 3D H-Mo 2 C-Mo 2 N nanostructures demonstrate lower onset potential and overpotential at a current density of 10 mV cm -2 than the N-doped Mo 2 C@CN nanostructure due to its higher active sites and improved interfacial charge transfer. The current work presents a strategy to tune metal carbide/nitride nanostructures and interfacial properties for the production of high-performance energy materials.

There is an increasing demand for boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs) for a range of applications such as advanced composite materials, ion/gas selective membranes, and energy storage. These applications require stable, high-concentration BNNS dispersions as a precursor, which is a challenge because BNNSs do not disperse easily. We report a simple, yet efficient, mechanochemical exfoliation technique to prepare functionalized BNNSs with excellent dispersibility in water and organic solvents. The resultant amino-modified BNNSs (BNNS-NH 2 ) are stable in ethanol for 3 months at an unprecedented high concentration of 46 ± 2 mg/mL. We provide insights into the dispersibility mechanism for amino- and hydroxyl-functionalized BNNSs. High-concentration BNNS dispersions enable a facile painting method that can coat a uniform, insulating, and antioxidant BNNS layer on arbitrary surfaces. In addition, different functional groups enhance the selectivity of different ions of the functionalized BNNS membranes for water purification and other ion separation applications. These stable, high-concentration BNNS dispersions make many exciting applications possible.

In recent years, two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials have been extensively explored in the field of nanofluidics due to their interconnected and well-controlled nanochannels. In particular, the investigation of 2D nanomaterials using their intrinsic properties for smart nanofluidics is receiving increased interest. Here, we report that MoS 2 membranes can be used for light-controlled nanofluidic applications based on their photoelectrical properties. We show that the MoS 2 membranes exhibit surface charge-governed ionic transport in NaCl and KCl solution without light illumination, while the ionic conductivity of the MoS 2 membranes is up to 2 orders of magnitude higher at low concentration solution than that in bulk solution. We also show that the ionic conductivity of the membranes is enhanced under light illumination at 405 and 635 nm and reversible and stable switching of ionic current upon light illumination is observed. In addition, ionic current through membranes is enhanced by increasing light intensity. Therefore, our findings demonstrate that MoS 2 membranes can be a potential platform for light-controlled nanofluidic applications.

The microencapsulation technique has been proven as a powerful and flexible tool to design and develop a multifunctional additive for various applications. The significant characteristics of this technique center around the ability to control the release of the core active ingredients by tuning the porosity and the permeability of the shell. However, this original concept has faced a major roadblock in lubricant research since it causes a major breakage of the microcapsules (∼70%) under severe stressed-shearing conditions. The shell fragments generated from such unwanted events significantly influence the friction and wear performances of the counterpart, thus limiting the ongoing research of the microencapsulation technique in tribology. To solve such technical bottlenecks, we develop a new strategy of utilizing the microencapsulation technique which focuses on the smart responsiveness of the shell with the base lubricant and the synergy between the incorporated materials. In this study, the smart-responsive colloidal capsule has been developed based on our proposed concept that demonstrates outstanding performances in improving the lubricity of the conventional melt lubricant (by ∼70%) under hot metal working conditions. An unprecedented oxidation-reduction (by ∼93%) and the first instance of ultralow friction (0.07) at elevated temperatures (880 °C) have been initially achieved. This work opens a new avenue of customizing a multifunctional additive package by utilizing the smart colloidal capsules in lubrication science.

Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenide membranes have entered the spotlight for nanofiltration application owing to the novel mass transport properties in nanochannels. However, further improving the water permeability with high molecular separation rate simultaneously is challenging. In this work, to achieve ultrafast molecule separation, MoS 2 and WS 2 nanosheets with ultrasmall lateral size (<100 nm) are fabricated by sucrose-assisted mechanochemical exfoliation. Ultrasmall nanosheets in the membranes cut down average length of water-transporting paths and create more nanochannels and nanocapillaries for water molecules to pass through membranes. The water flux of these kinds of MoS 2 and WS 2 membranes are significantly enhanced to 918 and 828 L/m 2 h bar, respectively, which is four and two times higher than those of previously reported MoS 2 and WS 2 membranes with larger lateral size nanosheets. In addition, MoS 2 and WS 2 membranes display excellent rejection performance for rhodamine B and Evans blue with a high rejection rate (∼99%). This study provides a promising method to improve the performance of 2D laminar membranes for nanofiltration application by using ultrasmall 2D nanosheets.

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is a precise and noninvasive analytical technique that is widely used in chemical analysis, environmental protection, food processing, pharmaceutics, and diagnostic biology. However, it is still a challenge to produce highly sensitive and reusable SERS substrates with a minimum fluorescence background. In this work, we propose the use of van der Waals heterostructures of two-dimensional materials to cover plasmonic metal nanoparticles to solve this challenge. The heterostructures of atomically thin boron nitride (BN) and graphene provide synergistic effects: (1) electrons could tunnel through the atomically thin BN, allowing the charge transfer between graphene and probe molecules to suppress the fluorescence background; (2) the SERS sensitivity is enhanced by graphene via a chemical enhancement mechanism in addition to an electromagnetic field mechanism; and (3) the atomically thin BN protects the underlying graphene and Ag nanoparticles from oxidation during heating for regeneration at 360 °C in the air so that the SERS substrates could be reused. These advances will facilitate wider applications of SERS especially on the detection of fluorescent molecules with higher sensitivity.

Confining light in extremely small cavities is crucial in nanophotonics, central to many applications. Employing a unique nanoparticle-on-mirror plasmonic structure and using a graphene film as a spacer, we create nanoscale cavities with volumes of only a few tens of cubic nanometers. The ultracompact cavity produces extremely strong optical near-fields, which facilitate the formation of single carbon quantum dots in the cavity and simultaneously empower the strong coupling between the excitons of the formed carbon quantum dot and the localized surface plasmons. This is manifested in the optical scattering spectra, showing a magnificent Rabi splitting of up to 200 meV under ambient conditions. In addition, we demonstrate that the strong coupling is tuneable with light irradiation. This opens new paradigms for investigating the fundamental light emission properties of carbon quantum dots in the quantum regime and paves the way for many significant applications.

Colored and color-changing materials are central to perception and interaction in nature and have been exploited in an array of modern technologies such as sensors, visual displays, and smart materials. Attempts to introduce color into carbon fiber materials have been limited by deleterious impacts on fiber properties, and the extension of colored fibers toward "smart composites" remains in its infancy. We present carbon fibers incorporating structural color, similar to that observed on the surface of soap bubbles and various insects and birds, by modifying the fiber surface through in situ polymerization grafting. When dry, the treated fibers exhibit a striking blue color, but when exposed to a volatile solvent, a cascade of colors across the visible light region is observed as the film first swells and then shrinks as the solvent evaporates. The treated fibers not only possess a unique color and color-changing ability but also can be reversibly formed into complex shapes and bear significant loads even without being encased in a supporting polymer. The tensile strength of treated fibers shows a statistically significant increase (+12%), and evaluation of the fiber-to-matrix adhesion of these polymers to an epoxy resin shows more than 300% improvement over control fibers. This approach creates a new platform for the multifaceted advance of smart composites.

Fiber-based organic electrochemical transistors (FECTs) provide a new platform for the realization of an ultrafast and ultrasensitive biosensor, especially for the wearable dopamine (DA)-monitoring device. Here, we presented a fully filament-integrated fabric, it exhibited remarkable mechanical compatibility with the human body, and the minimum sensing unit was an organic electrochemical transistor (OECT) based on PVA- co-PE nanofibers (NFs) and polypyrrole (PPy) nanofiber network. The introduction of NFs notably increased the specific surface area and hydrophilicity of the PA6 filament, resulting in the formation of a large area of intertwined PPy nanofiber network. The electrical performance of PPy nanofiber network-modified fibers improved considerably. For the common FECTs, the typical on/off ratio was up to two orders of magnitude, and the temporal recovery time between on and off states was shortened to 0.34 s. Meanwhile, the device exhibited continuous cycling stability. In addition, the performances of FECT-based dopamine sensors depending on different gate electrodes have also been investigated. The PPy/NFs/PA6 filament-based dopamine sensor was more superior to the gold and platinum (Pt) wires, and the sensor presented long-term sensitivity with a detection region from 1 nM to 1 μM, rapid response time to a set of DA concentrations, remarkable selectivity in the presence of sodium chloride, uric acid, ascorbic acid and glucose, and superior reproducibility. Moreover, it could also be woven into the fabric product. The novel and wearable FECT device shows the potential to become the state-of-the-art DA-monitoring platform.

The concept of thermoregulating textiles capable of providing personal thermal management property (PTM) has attracted significant attention in recent years. It is considered as an emerging approach to promote the comfort and general well-being of wearers and also to mitigate the energy consumption load for indoor living space conditioning. Regulating the heat exchange between human body and environment has been the core subject of many studies on introducing the PTM functionality to textiles. This work provides an overview of the latest literature, summarizing the recent innovations and state-of-the-art approaches of controlling the heat gain and loss of textiles. To this end, methods to control the fundamental aspects of heat gain and loss of fabrics such as using near-infrared reflective materials and conductive nanomaterials, designing photonic structures of fabrics, and engineering nanoporous structures for passive cooling and heating effects will be discussed. Moreover, specific attention is given to the application of phase change materials in textiles, their integration methods, and the associated mechanisms. Several commercial methods such as adapting the innovative designs, introducing moisture management capability, and using air/liquid thermoregulating systems will also be discussed. This review article provides a clear picture of the concept of thermoregulating textiles and recommends some future research trajectories for this emerging field.

A new biocatalytic nanofibrous composite ultrafiltration membrane was developed to reduce protein fouling interactions and self-clean the membrane surface. The dual-layer poly(vinylidenefluoride)/nylon-6,6/chitosan composite membrane contains a hydrophobic poly(vinylidenefluoride) cast support layer and a hydrophilic functional nylon-6,6/chitosan nanofibrous surface layer where enzymes were chemically attached. The intrinsic surface chemistry and high surface area of the nanofibers allowed optimal and stable immobilization of trypsin (TR) and α-chymotrypsin enzymes via direct covalent binding. The enzyme immobilization was confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and visualized by confocal microscopy analysis. The prepared biocatalytic composite membranes were nanoporous with superior permeability offering stable protein antiadhesion and self-cleaning properties owing to the repulsive mechanism and digestion of proteins into peptides and amino acids, which was quantified by the gel electrophoresis technique. The TR-immobilized composite membranes exhibited 2.7-fold higher permeance and lower surface protein contamination with 3-fold greater permeance recovery, when compared to the pristine membrane after two ultrafiltration cycles with the model feed solution containing bovine serum albumin/NaCl/CaCl 2 . The biocatalytic membranes retained about 50% of the enzyme activity after six reuse cycles but were regenerated to 100% activity after enzyme reloading, leading to a simple and cost-effective water remediation operation. Such surface- and pore-engineered membranes with self-cleaning properties offer a viable solution for severe surface protein contamination in food and water applications.

The thickness of graphene films can be accurately determined by optical contrast spectroscopy. However, this becomes challenging and complicated when the flake size reduces to the micrometer scale, where the contrast spectrum is sensitively dependent on the polarization and incident angle of light. Here, we report accurate measurement of the optical contrast spectra of micrometer-sized few-layer graphene flakes on Au substrate. Using a high-resolution optical microscopy with a 100× magnification objective, we accurately determined the layer numbers of flakes as small as one micrometer in lateral size. We developed a theoretical model to accurately take into account the appropriate contribution of light incident at various angles and polarizations, which matched the experimental results extremely well. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the optical contrast spectroscopy is highly sensitive to detect the adsorption of submonolayer airborne hydrocarbon molecules, which can reveal whether graphene is contaminated. Though the technique was demonstrated on graphene, it can be readily generalized to many other two-dimensional materials, which opens new avenues for developing miniaturized and ultrasensitive label-free molecular sensors.

The chemical composition of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer formed on the surface of lithium metal electrodes cycled in phosphonium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide ionic liquid (IL) electrolytes are characterized by magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS NMR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. A multiphase layered structure is revealed, which is shown to remain relatively unchanged during extended cycling (up to 250 cycles at 1.5 mA·cm -2 , 3 mA h·cm -2 , 50 °C). The main components detected by MAS NMR and XPS after several hundreds of cycles are LiF and breakdown products from the bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide anion including Li 2 S. Similarities in chemical composition are observed in the case of the dilute (0.5 mol·kg -1 of Li salt in IL) and the highly concentrated (3.8 mol·kg -1 of Li salt in IL) electrolyte during cycling. The concentrated system is found to promote the formation of a thicker and more uniform SEI with larger amounts of reduced species from the anion. These SEI features are thought to facilitate more stable and efficient Li cycling and a reduced tendency for dendrite formation.

The development of advanced thermal transport materials is a global challenge. Two-dimensional nanomaterials have been demonstrated as promising candidates for thermal management applications. Here, we report a boron nitride (BN) nanosheet/polymer composite film with excellent flexibility and toughness prepared by vacuum-assisted filtration. The mechanical performance of the composite film is highly flexible and robust. It is noteworthy that the film exhibits highly anisotropic properties, with superior in-plane thermal conductivity of around 200 W m -1 K -1 and extremely low through-plane thermal conductivity of 1.0 W m -1 K -1 , making this material an excellent candidate for thermal management in electronics. Importantly, the composite film shows fire-resistant properties. The newly developed unconventional flexible, tough, and refractory BN films are also promising for heat dissipation in a variety of applications.

Janus nanofiber based composite ultrafiltration (UF) membranes were fabricated via a two-step method, i.e., consecutive electrospinning of hydrophilic nylon-6,6/chitosan nanofiber blend and conventional casting of hydrophobic poly(vinylidene difluoride) (PVDF) dope solution. The as-developed PVDF/nylon-6,6/chitosan membranes were investigated for its morphology using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) by which 18 wt % PVDF was chosen as the optimum base polymer concentration due to optimal degree of integration of cast and nanofiber layers. This membrane was benchmarked against the pure PVDF and PVDF/nylon-6,6 membranes in terms of surface properties, permeability, and its ability to reverse protein fouling. The improved hydrophilicity of the PVDF/nylon-6,6/chitosan membrane was revealed from the 72% reduction in the initial water contact angle compared to the pure PVDF benchmark, due to the incorporation of intrinsic hydrophilic hydroxyl and amine functional groups on the membrane surface confirmed by FTIR. The integration of the nanofiber and cast layers has led to altered pore arrangements offering about 93% rejection of bovine serum albumin (BSA) proteins with a permeance of 393 L·m -2 ·h -1 ·bar -1 in cross-flow filtration experiments; while the PVDF benchmark only had a BSA rejection of 67% and a permeance of 288 L·m -2 ·h -1 ·bar -1 . The PVDF/nylon-6,6/chitosan membrane exhibited high fouling propensity with 2.2 times higher reversible fouling and 78% decrease in the irreversible fouling compared to the PVDF benchmark after 4 h of filtration with BSA foulants.

Strain sensors with high elastic limit and high sensitivity are required to meet the rising demand for wearable electronics. Here, we present the fabrication of highly sensitive strain sensors based on nanocomposites consisting of graphene aerogel (GA) and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), with the primary focus being to tune the sensitivity of the sensors by tailoring the cellular microstructure through controlling the manufacturing processes. The resultant nanocomposite sensors exhibit a high sensitivity with a gauge factor of up to approximately 61.3. Of significant importance is that the sensitivity of the strain sensors can be readily altered by changing the concentration of the precursor (i.e., an aqueous dispersion of graphene oxide) and the freezing temperature used to process the GA. The results reveal that these two parameters control the cell size and cell-wall thickness of the resultant GA, which may be correlated to the observed variations in the sensitivities of the strain sensors. The higher is the concentration of graphene oxide, then the lower is the sensitivity of the resultant nanocomposite strain sensor. Upon increasing the freezing temperature from -196 to -20 °C, the sensitivity increases and reaches a maximum value of 61.3 at -50 °C and then decreases with a further increase in freezing temperature to -20 °C. Furthermore, the strain sensors offer excellent durability and stability, with their piezoresistivities remaining virtually unchanged even after 10 000 cycles of high-strain loading-unloading. These novel findings pave the way to custom design strain sensors with a desirable piezoresistive behavior.

The ongoing search for cheap and efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts to replace currently used catalysts based on Pt or its alloys has been considered as an prevalent strategy to produce renewable and clean hydrogen energy. Herein, inspired by the neuron structure in biological systems, we demonstrate a novel fabrication strategy via a simple two-step method for the synthesis of a neuronlike interpenetrative nanocomposite network of Co-P embedded in porous carbon nanotubes (NIN-Co-P/PCNTs). It is found that the interpenetrative network provides a natural transport path to accelerate the hydrogen production process. The embedded-type structure improves the utilization ratio of Co-P and the hollow, tubelike, and porous structure of PCNTs further promote charge and reactant transport. These factors allow the as-prepared NIN-Co-P/PCNTs to achieve a onset potential low to 43 mV, a Tafel slope as small as 40 mV/decade, an excellent stability, and a high turnover frequency value of 3.2 s(-1) at η = 0.2 V in acidic conditions. These encouraging properties derived from the neuronlike interpenetrative network structure might offer new inspiration for the preparation of more nanocomposites for applications in other catalytic and optoelectronic field.

The damage of optic nerve will cause permanent visual field loss and irreversible ocular diseases, such as glaucoma. The damage of optic nerve is mainly derived from the atrophy, apoptosis or death of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs). Though some progress has been achieved on electronic retinal implants that can electrically stimulate undamaged parts of RGCs or retina to transfer signals, stimulated self-repair/regeneration of RGCs has not been realized yet. The key challenge for development of electrically stimulated regeneration of RGCs is the selection of stimulation electrodes with a sufficient safe charge injection limit (Q(inj), i.e., electrochemical capacitance). Most traditional electrodes tend to have low Q(inj) values. Herein, we synthesized polypyrrole functionalized graphene (PPy-G) via a facile but efficient polymerization-enhanced ball milling method for the first time. This technique could not only efficiently introduce electron-acceptor nitrogen to enhance capacitance, but also remain a conductive platform-the π-π conjugated carbon plane for charge transportation. PPy-G based aligned nanofibers were subsequently fabricated for guided growth and electrical stimulation (ES) of RGCs. Significantly enhanced viability, neurite outgrowth and antiaging ability of RGCs were observed after ES, suggesting possibilities for regeneration of optic nerve via ES on the suitable nanoelectrodes.

Electrochemically splitting water for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) has been viewed as a promising approach to produce renewable and clean hydrogen energy. However, searching for cheap and efficient HER electrocatalysts to replace the currently used Pt-based catalysts remains an urgent task. Herein, we develop a one-step carbon nanotube (CNT) assisted synthesis strategy with CNTs' strong adsorbability to mediate the growth of subnanometer-sized MoS(x) on CNTs. The subnanometer MoS(x)-CNT hybrids achieve a low overpotential of 106 mV at 10 mA cm(-2), a small Tafel slope of 37 mV per decade, and an unprecedentedly high turnover frequency value of 18.84 s(-1) at η = 200 mV among all reported non-Pt catalysts in acidic conditions. The superior performance of the hybrid catalysts benefits from the presence of a higher number of active sites and the abundant exposure of unsaturated S atoms rooted in the subnanometer structure, demonstrating a new class of subnanometer-scale catalysts.

A range of high-capacity Li-ion anode materials (conversion reactions with lithium) suffer from poor cycling stability and limited high-rate performance. These issues can be addressed through hybridization of multiple nanostructured components in an electrode. Using a Co3O4-Fe2O3/C system as an example, we demonstrate that the cycling stability and rate performance are improved in a hybrid electrode. The hybrid Co3O4-Fe2O3/C electrode exhibits long-term cycling stability (300 cycles) at a moderate current rate with a retained capacity of approximately 700 mAh g(-1). The reversible capacity of the Co3O4-Fe2O3/C electrode is still about 400 mAh g(-1) (above the theoretical capacity of graphite) at a high current rate of ca. 3 A g(-1), whereas Co3O4-Fe2O3, Fe2O3/C, and Co3O4/C electrodes (used as controls) are unable to operate as effectively under identical testing conditions. To understand the structure-function relationship in the hybrid electrode and the reasons for the enhanced cycling stability, we employed a combination of ex situ and in situ techniques. Our results indicate that the improvements in the hybrid electrode originate from the combination of sequential electrochemical activity of the transition metal oxides with an enhanced electronic conductivity provided by percolating carbon chains.
