Low-adhesive surfaces have been highlighted due to the potentials to mitigate fouling issues by preventing unwanted substances from adhering. Realizing superhydrophobicity with 3D surface structures/chemical modifiers or fabricating lubricant-assisted slippery surfaces has been demonstrated to realize low-adhesive surfaces. However, they still need to overcome the transition to Wenzel from Cassie states of droplets on 3D surface structures or the lubricant depletion issues of slippery surfaces for sustainable operations. Herein, we report the fabrication of low-adhesive polymeric surfaces, neither assisted by 3D surface structures/chemical modifiers nor lubricants, which is realized by embedding the interconnected pore networks underneath the top smooth surface using a water steaming method. The fabricated silicone surfaces exhibit low-adhesive properties due to the stress concentration effects generated by the subsurface-structured pores, favorable for easy detachment of the adherent from the surface. Our platform can be exploited to lower adhesion of superhydrophilic surfaces or to achieve ultralow-adhesive properties upon combination with superhydrophobicity. Finally, scale precipitation tests reveal 4.2 times lower scale accumulation of our low-adhesive polymeric surfaces than that in control samples.

To explore novel coatings with potential for easy release of ice (icephobicity), a series of platinum-cured silicone coatings was prepared incorporating SYL-OFF 7210, designated MQ-R, as a nanoscale reinforcing component. These optically transparent coatings are designated according to cure temperature and MQ-R wt %, for example, Pt-PDMS(25)-20 for 25 °C cure and 20 wt % MQ-R. Surface characterization included dynamic contact angles and morphology by atomic force microscopy. Bulk characterization was accomplished with stress-strain measurements at 25 °C and dynamic mechanical analysis from -110 to 150 °C. Despite exceptional recent advances in tailoring the wettability of surfaces, to date, no engineered surface can passively suppress the in-plane growth of frost that invariably occurs in humid, subfreezing environments. Here, we show that up to 90% of a surface can exhibit passive antifrosting by using chemical or physical wettability patterns to template "ice stripes" across the surface. As ice exhibits a depressed vapor pressure relative to liquid water, these sacrificial ice stripes siphon the supersaturated water vapor to keep the intermediate surface areas dry from dew and frost. Further, we show that when these sacrificial ice stripes are elevated atop microfins, they diffusively coarsen in a suspended state above the surface. The suspended state of the coarsening ice results in a diffusive growth rate an order of magnitude slower than frost coarsening directly on a solid substrate and should also minimize its adhesive strength to the surface.

Sol-gel coatings with different roughness and surface energy were prepared on glass substrates. Methyl triethoxysilane (MTEOS), 3-Glycidyloxypropyl trimethoxysilane (GLYMO) and fluoroalkylsilane (FAS) were used to obtain a mechanically robust icephobic coating. Different amount of hydrophobic silica nano particles was added as fillers to introduce different roughness and surface energy to the coatings. The microstructure, roughness, and surface energy, together with elemental information and surface chemical state, were investigated at room temperature. The contact angle and sliding angle were measured at different temperatures to correlate the wetting behavior at low temperature with the anti-icing performance. The ice adhesion shear strength was measured inside an ice chamber using a self-designed tester. The factors influencing the ice adhesion were discussed, and the optimum anti-icing performance found in the series of coatings. It was found that lower surface energy leads to lower ice adhesion regardless of the roughness, while the roughness plays a more complicated role. The wetting behavior of the droplet on surface changes as temperature decreases. The anti-icing performance is closely related to the antiwetting property of the surfaces at subzero temperatures.

A robust prototypical anti-icing coating with a self-lubricating liquid water layer (SLWL) is fabricated via grafting cross-linked hygroscopic polymers inside the micropores of silicon wafer surfaces. The ice adhesion on the surface with SLWL is 1 order of magnitude lower than that on the superhydrophobic surfaces and the ice formed atop of it can be blown off by an action of strong breeze. The surface with self-lubricating liquid water layer exhibits excellent capability of self-healing and abrasion resistance. The SLWL surface should also find applications in antifogging and self-cleaning by rainfall, in addition to anti-icing and antifrosting.

A simple and low-cost technique for the preparation of silicon-oil-infused polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) coatings with different silicon oil contents have been developed and studied. This material is designed for ice-phobic applications, and thus a high hydrophobic property of PDMS is maintained by avoiding any polar groups such as C=O and OH in the structure. Therefore, the polymer main chain was attached with vinyl and Si-H groups to obtain a cross-linking capability, meanwhile to ensure a nonpolar chemical structure. Its ice-phobic property has been investigated in terms of ice adhesion strength (tensile and shear), water contact angle, icing dynamics using high-speed photography and morphology using TEM, SEM and AFM. The prepared coating surface shows a low surface energy and very low ice adhesion strength of 50 kPa, only about 3% of the value on a bare aluminum (Al) surface. In the silicon oil infused PDMS coatings, the low surface energy of the silicon oil and PDMS, and the high mobility of silicon oil played an important role on the ice-phobic property. Both of these factors offer the surface a large water contact angle and hence a small contact area, leading to the formation of a loose ice layer. In addition, the oil infused polymer structure significantly reduces the contact area of the ice with solid substrate since the ice mostly contacts with the mobile oil. This leads to a very weak interaction between the substrate and ice, consequently significantly reduces the ice adhesion strength on the surface. Therefore, such material could be a good candidate for ice-phobic coatings on which the accumulated ice may be easily removed by a nature force, such as wind, gravity, and vibration. © 2013 American Chemical Society.

Four aluminum surfaces with wettability varied from superhydrophilic to superhydrophobic were prepared by combining an etching and a coating process. The surface wettability was checked in terms of water contact angle (CA) and sliding angle (SA) under different humidity at -10 C. High-speed photography was applied to study water droplet impact dynamics on these surfaces. It was found that single and successive water droplets could rebound on the superhydrophobic surface and roll off at a tilt angle larger than 30 under an extremely condensing weather condition (-10 C and relative humidity of 85-90%). In addition, the superhydrophobic surface showed a strong icephobic property, the ice adhesion on this surface was only 13% of that on the superhydrophilic surface, though they had a similar nano/microtopological structure. Moreover, this superhydrophobic surface displayed an excellent durability of the icephobic property. The ice adhesion only increased to 20% and 16% of that on the superhydrophobic surface after the surface was undergone 20 icing/ice-breaking cycles and 40 icing/ice-melting cycles, respectively. Surface profile and XPS studies on these surfaces indicated a minor damage of the surface nano/microstructure and the coating layer upon these multiple ice-breaking and ice-melting processes. Therefore, this superhydrophobic surface could be a good candidate for icephobic applications. © 2013 American Chemical Society.

In this work, we present a modification of a stainless steel surface to impart superhydrophobic properties to it that are robust with respect to mechanical stresses associated with cyclic icing/deicing treatment, as well as to long-term contact with aqueous media and high humidity. The durability of the superhydrophobic state is ensured by the texture with multimodal roughness stable against mechanical stresses and a 2D polymer network of fluorooxysilane chemically bound to the texture elements. The designed superhydrophobic coating is characterized by contact angles exceeding 155° and a maximum rolling angle of 42° after 100 icing/deicing cycles.
