2. Reconfigurable Antireflection Coatings Enabled by PDMS Oligomer Infusion in Templated Nanoporous Polymer Films

Abstract

The diffusion of uncured polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) oligomers out of bulk PDMS elastomers is usually detrimental to many biomedical and microfluidic applications due to the inevitable contamination of the contacting fluids and substrates. Here, we transform this detrimental process into an enabling technology for achieving novel reconfigurable antireflection (AR) coatings, which are of great technological importance in the development of new nano-optical and optoelectronic applications. Self-assembled monolayer silica colloidal crystals are first used as sacrificial templates in fabricating nanoporous polymer AR coatings. When air in the templated nanopores is replaced with infused PDMS oligomers simply by pressing a PDMS stamp on a nanoporous AR film, the original antireflection conditions are lost, and the coating transforms from a low-reflection configuration to a high-reflection state. The original antireflection performance can be fully recovered by dissolving the infused oligomers in the appropriate solvents (e.g., hexane). This novel tuning mechanism for achieving reconfigurable AR properties has been confirmed by systematic investigations using various microscopes, optical spectroscopy, nanoindentation, thermomechanical tests, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Complex micropatterns with micrometer-scale spatial resolution and drastically different AR performances can be easily printed on nanoporous AR films by using a soft lithography-based microcontact printing process. Numerical finite-difference time-domain simulations match well with experimental antireflection measurements and reveal a linear relationship between the optical transmission and the amount of infused PDMS oligomers in nanopores.

13. Reactive Oxygen Species-Triggered Curcumin Release from Hollow Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles for PM2.5-Induced Acute Lung Injury Treatment

Abstract

Exposure to fine particulate matter with a diameter ≤2.5 μm (PM2.5) can result in serious inflammation and oxidative stress in lung tissue. However, there is presently very few effective treatments for PM2.5-induced many pulmonary diseases, such as acute lung injury (ALI). Herein, curcumin-loaded reactive oxygen species (ROS)-responsive hollow mesoporous silica nanoparticles (Cur@HMSN-BSA) are proposed for scavenging the intracellular ROS and suppressing inflammatory responses against PM2.5-induced ALI. The prepared nanoparticles were coated with bovine serum albumin (BSA) via an ROS-sensitive thioketal (TK)-containing linker, in which the TK-containing linker would be cleaved by the excessive amounts of ROS in inflammatory sites to induce the detachment of BSA from the nanoparticles surface and thus triggering release of loaded curcumin. The Cur@HMSN-BSA nanoparticles could be used as ROS scavengers because of their excellent ROS-responsiveness, which were able to efficiently consume high concentrations of intracellular ROS. Furthermore, it was also found that Cur@HMSN-BSA downregulated the secretion of several important pro-inflammatory cytokines and promoted the polarization from M1 phenotypic macrophages to M2 phenotypic macrophages for eliminating PM2.5-induced inflammatory activation. Therefore, this work provided a promising strategy to synergistically scavenge intracellular ROS and suppress the inflammation responses, which may serve as an ideal therapeutic platform for pneumonia treatment.

Abstract

In this article, a new kind of anti-icing material, liquid-infused micro-nanostructured MOF coating (LIMNSMC), was designed and prepared. The porous micro-nanostructures of metal-organic framework (MOF) coating were first utilized to immobilize the lubricating liquid. The anti-icing performance of LIMNSMC could be tuned by the viscosity, the amount of lubricating liquid, and the surface morphology. Under appropriate conditions, the LIMNSMC shows high anti-icing performance with the condensed water-freezing temperature of approximately -39 °C and the ice adhesion strength of approximately 10 kPa as the micro-nanostructures of MOF coating reduce the contact area and hinder the heat transfer between the surface and water droplets, and the lubricating layer effectively reduces the heterogeneous nucleation sites on the surface, as well as reduces the ice adhesion. LIMNSMCs exhibit good durability as the lubricating liquid can be effectively immobilized by the nanopores of MOFs. So, the high anti-icing performance of LIMNSMCs could be maintained throughout 10 freezing/melting cycles and six icing/de-icing cycles and slightly decreased after high-speed centrifugation and 50 abrasion cycles.

Abstract

We designed 12-amino acid peptides as antifreeze protein (AFP) mimetics and tuned the antifreeze activity of the peptides by their structures. Moreover, these short peptides were first immobilized to surfaces as an anti-icing coating. We discovered that the peptides with higher antifreeze activity exhibited better anti-icing performance. It is the first time that short peptides were successfully applied to fabricate anti-icing surfaces, which is certainly advantageous in comparison to the AFP anti-icing coatings previously reported.

Abstract

A robust prototypical anti-icing coating with a self-lubricating liquid water layer (SLWL) is fabricated via grafting cross-linked hygroscopic polymers inside the micropores of silicon wafer surfaces. The ice adhesion on the surface with SLWL is 1 order of magnitude lower than that on the superhydrophobic surfaces and the ice formed atop of it can be blown off by an action of strong breeze. The surface with self-lubricating liquid water layer exhibits excellent capability of self-healing and abrasion resistance. The SLWL surface should also find applications in antifogging and self-cleaning by rainfall, in addition to anti-icing and antifrosting.

Abstract

Modulating the surface properties of nanoparticles (NPs) is an important approach to accomplish immune escape, prolonged the blood retention time, and enhance the ability of targeted drug delivery. The camouflage of cancer cell membrane onto nanoparticles has been proved to be an ideal approach to enhance active targeting ability of NPs. Herein, we isolated the membrane of melanoma cells to coat doxorubicin (DOX) and indocyanine green (ICG)-loaded hollow copper sulfide NPs (ID-HCuSNP@B16F10) for targeted photothermal therapy, photoacoustic imaging, and chemotherapy. A remarkable in vitro anticancer effect after irradiation and homologous targeting can be observed in B16F10 cells after the treatment of ID-HCuSNP@B16F10. Moreover, ID-HCuSNP@B16F10 exhibits excellent photothermal effect in melanoma animal models and achieves a high tumor ablation rate. This biomimetic system can realize high drug loading efficiency, enhanced targeting ability, and ideal antitumor efficiency.
