Photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting is a promising approach to directly convert solar energy to renewable and storable hydrogen. However, the very low photovoltage and serious corrosion of semiconductor photoelectrodes in strongly acidic or alkaline electrolytes needed for water splitting severely impede the practical application of this technology. In this work, we demonstrate a facile approach to fabricate a high-photovoltage, stable photoanode by depositing Ni(OH)2cocatalyst on cubic silicon carbide (3C-SiC), followed by aging in 1.0 M NaOH at room temperature for 40 h without applying electrochemical bias. The aged 3C-SiC/Ni(OH)2photoanode achieves a record-high photovoltage of 1.10 V, an ultralow onset potential of 0.10 V vs the reversible hydrogen electrode, and enhanced stability for PEC water splitting in the strongly alkaline solution (pH = 13.6). This aged photoanode also exhibits excellent in-air stability, demonstrating identical PEC water-splitting performance for more than 400 days. We find that the aged Ni(OH)2dramatically promotes the hole transport at the photoanode/electrolyte interface, thus significantly enhancing the photovoltage and overall PEC performance. Furthermore, the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity and the phase transitions of the Ni(OH)2electrocatalyst before and after aging are systematically investigated. We find that the aging process is critical for the formation of the relatively stable and highly active Fe-doped β-NiOOH, which accounts for the enhanced OER activity and stability of the PEC water splitting. This work provides a simple and effective approach to fabricate high-photovoltage and stable photoanodes, bringing new premise toward solar fuel development.

In solid-state batteries, the interface between cathodes and solid electrolytes is crucial and coating layers play a vital role. LiNbO3has been known as a promising coating material, whereas recent studies showed its degradation via releasing oxygen and lithium during cycling. This computational study addresses the elucidation of essential characteristics of the coating materials by examining LiNbO3and its counterpart LiTaO3interfaces to a representative layered cathode, LiCoO2. Employing the interface CALYPSO method, we constructed explicit models of both coatings on LiCoO2. Our findings indicate that LiTaO3offers easier Li+migration at the interface due to the smaller difference in Li adiabatic potential at the interface, whereas LiNbO3more effectively suppresses oxygen activity at high delithiation states via lowering the O 2p states. This comparative analysis provides essential insights into optimizing coating materials for improved battery performance.

The increasing prevalence of health problems stemming from sedentary lifestyles and evolving workplace cultures has placed a substantial burden on healthcare systems. Consequently, remote health wearable monitoring systems have emerged as essential tools to track individuals’ health and well-being. Self-powered triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have exhibited significant potential for use as emerging detection devices capable of recognizing body movements and monitoring breathing patterns. However, several challenges remain to be addressed in order to fulfill the requirements for self-healing ability, air permeability, energy harvesting, and suitable sensing materials. These materials must possess high flexibility, be lightweight, and have excellent triboelectric charging effects in both electropositive and electronegative layers. In this work, we investigated self-healable electrospun polybutadiene-based urethane (PBU) as a positive triboelectric layer and titanium carbide (Ti3C2Tx) MXene as a negative triboelectric layer for the fabrication of an energy-harvesting TENG device. PBU consists of maleimide and furfuryl components as well as hydrogen bonds that trigger the Diels–Alder reaction, contributing to its self-healing properties. Moreover, this urethane incorporates a multitude of carbonyl and amine groups, which create dipole moments in both the stiff and the flexible segments of the polymer. This characteristic positively influences the triboelectric qualities of PBU by facilitating electron transfer between contacting materials, ultimately resulting in high output performance. We employed this device for sensing applications to monitor human motion and breathing pattern recognition. The soft and fibrous-structured TENG generates a high and stable open-circuit voltage of up to 30 V and a short-circuit current of 4 μA at an operation frequency of 4.0 Hz, demonstrating remarkable cyclic stability. A significant feature of our TENG is its self-healing ability, which allows for the restoration of its functionality and performance after sustaining damage. This characteristic has been achieved through the utilization of the self-healable PBU fibers, which can be repaired via a simple vapor solvent method. This innovative approach enables the TENG device to maintain optimal performance and continue functioning effectively even after multiple uses. After integration with a rectifier, the TENG can charge various capacitors and power 120 LEDs. Moreover, we employed the TENG as a self-powered active motion sensor, attaching it to the human body to monitor various body movements for energy-harvesting and sensing purposes. Additionally, the device demonstrates the capability to recognize breathing patterns in real time, offering valuable insights into an individual’s respiratory health.

A popular substance in the MXene family, titanium carbide (Ti3C2Tx), has received substantial attention mainly due to its high metallic conductivity, easy solution processability, and environment friendliness. However, the poor oxygen resistance nature of MXene has prevented its practical applications from being realized. Despite significant attempts to improve the oxidative stability of MXenes, a comprehensive understanding of the oxidation mechanism is still elusive, thus leaving an optimal strategy for recycling oxidized MXene in question. Here, by developing a facile hydrofluoric acid (HF) post-treatment, we have unraveled the regeneration kinetics of the oxidized Ti3C2Tx. A systematic and extensive investigation using a combination of Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffractometer, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed that HF post-treatment is critical for restoring the structure/morphology and surface composition of MXene nanosheets. These are ascribed to the oxidizing agent removal kinetics, while the generation of amorphous carbon and Ti(III) in fluorinated derivatives provides efficient electrical conductivity. Our findings suggested that HF post-treatment is sufficient to evade and reduce the degradation process while maintaining the conductivity for a longer time, which will not only be economically advantageous but also a step forward for the rational design of Ti3C2Tx-based devices and functional coatings.

2D/2D step-scheme (S-scheme) piezo-photocatalysts for the production of fine chemicals, such as hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), have attracted significant attention of global scientists owing to the efficiency in utilizing surface piezoelectric effects from 2D materials to overcome rapid charge recombination in photocatalytic processes. In this research, we reported the fabrication of 2D S-doped VOxdeposited on 2D g-C3N4to produce H2O2via the piezo-photocatalytic process with high production yields at 20.19 mmol g–1h–1, which was 1.75 and 4.87 times higher than that from solely piezo-catalytic and photocatalytic H2O2generation. The finding pointed out that adding sulfur (S) to VOxcan help to improve the catalytic outcomes by modifying the electronic properties of pristine VOx. In addition, when coupled with g-C3N4, the presence of S limits the formation of graphene in the VOx/g-C3N4composites, causing shielding effects and pushing the cascade reactions toward water generation in the materials. Besides, the research also sheds light on the charge transport between g-C3N4and S-VOxunder irradiation and how the composites work to trigger the formation of H2O2. The presence of S in the composite systems enhances charge transfer between two semiconductors by strengthening the internal electric fields (IEF) to drive electrons moving in one direction, as demonstrated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Moreover, the formation of H2O2significantly relies on the reduction of oxygen to generate oxygenic radical species at the g-C3N4sites. Meanwhile, S-VOxprovides oxidative sites in the composites to oxidize water molecules to directly or indirectly generate H2O2or O2, which will further participate in the reactions to produce the final products. This study confirms the validation of S-scheme piezo-photocatalysts, thus encouraging further research on developing heterojunction materials with high catalytic efficiency, which can be used in practical conditions.

Supramolecular self-assembly of Fe3+and tannic acid (TA) has received great attention in the fields of materials science and interface engineering because of its exceptional surface coating properties. Although advances in coating strategies often suggest that kinetics in the generation of interface-active Fe3+-TA species is deeply involved in the film formation, there is no acceptable elucidation for the coating process. In this work, we developed the enzyme-mediated kinetic control of Fe2+oxidation to Fe3+in a Fe2+-TA complex in the iron-gall-ink-revisited coating method. Specifically, hydrogen peroxide, produced in the glucose oxidase (GOx)-catalyzed reaction of d-glucose, accelerated Fe2+oxidation, and the optimized kinetics profoundly facilitated the film formation to be about 9 times thicker. We also proposed a perspective considering the coating process as nucleation and growth. From this viewpoint, the kinetics in the generation of interface-active Fe3+-TA species should be optimized because it determines whether the interface-active species forms a film on the substrate (i.e., heterogeneous nucleation and film growth) or flocculates in solution (i.e., homogeneous nucleation and particle growth). Moreover, GOx was concomitantly embedded into the Fe3+-TA films with sustained catalytic activities, and the GOx-mediated coating system was delightfully adapted to catalytic single-cell nanoencapsulation.

Magnetically induced hyperthermia has reached a milestone in medical nanoscience and in phase III clinical trials for cancer treatment. As it relies on the heat generated by magnetic nanoparticles (NPs) when exposed to an external alternating magnetic field, the heating ability of these NPs is of paramount importance, so is their synthesis. We present a simple and fast method to produce iron oxide nanostructures with excellent heating ability that are colloidally stable in water. A polyol process yielded biocompatible single core nanoparticles and nanoflowers. The effect of parameters such as the precursor concentration, polyol molecular weight as well as reaction time was studied, aiming to produce NPs with the highest possible heating rates. Polyacrylic acid facilitated the formation of excellent nanoheating agents iron oxide nanoflowers (IONFs) within 30 min. The progressive increase of the size of the NFs through applying a seeded growth approach resulted in outstanding enhancement of their heating efficiency with intrinsic loss parameter up to 8.49 nH m2kgFe–1. The colloidal stability of the NFs was maintained when transferring to an aqueous solution via a simple ligand exchange protocol, replacing polyol ligands with biocompatible sodium tripolyphosphate to secure the IONPs long-term colloidal stabilization.

Potassium-ion storage devices are attracting tremendous attention for wide-ranging applications on account of their low cost, fast charge transport in electrolytes, and large working voltage. However, developing cost-effective, high-energy electrodes with excellent structural stability to ensure long-term cycling performance is a major challenge. In this contribution, we have derived two different forms of carbon materials from almond shells using different chemical treatments. For instance, hard carbon (HC) and graphene-like activated carbon (AC) nanosheets are developed by employing simple carbonization and chemical activation routes, respectively. The resultant hard carbon (AS-HC) and activated carbon (AS-AC) exhibit outstanding electrochemical performance as negative and positive electrodes in a potassium-ion battery (KIB), respectively, through their tailor-made surface properties. These promising benefits pave a way to construct a biomass-derived carbon potassium-ion capacitor (KIC) by employing AS-HC as the negative electrode and AS-AC as the positive electrode in a K-based electrolyte. The as-fabricated KIC delivers a reasonable specific energy of 105 Wh/kg and excellent cycling life with negligible capacitance fading over 10 000 cycles. This “waste-to-wealth” approach can promote the development of sustainable KICs at low cost and inspire their use for fast-rate K-based energy storage applications.

Halide perovskites are promising optoelectronic semiconductors. For applications in solid-state detectors that operate in low photon flux counting mode, blocking interfaces are essential to minimize the dark current noise. Here, we investigate the interface between methylammonium lead tri-iodide (MAPbI3) single crystals and commonly used high and low work function metals to achieve photon counting capabilities in a solid-state detector. Using scanning photocurrent microscopy, we observe a large Schottky barrier at the MAPbI3/Pb interface, which efficiently blocks dark current. Moreover, the shape of the photocurrent profile indicates that the MAPbI3single-crystal surface has a deep fermi level close to that of Au. Rationalized by first-principle calculations, we attribute this observation to the defects due to excess iodine on the surface underpinning emergence of deep band-edge states. The photocurrent decay profile yields a charge carrier diffusion length of 10–25 μm. Using this knowledge, we demonstrate a single-crystal MAPbI3detector that can count single γ-ray photons by producing sharp electrical pulses with a fast rise time of <2 μs. Our study indicates that the interface plays a crucial role in solid-state detectors operating in photon counting mode.

Solar cells built with arrays of semiconductor wires have been studied for several years. They present some potential advantages over their bulk counterparts, such as (much) less use of semiconductor material, as well as improved light absorption properties. Most wire-based solar cells are fabricated with arrays of semiconductor p–n junctions, either radial or axial. Here, using a newly developed random connection process based on nickel silicide nanowires, we have built Schottky-type solar cells on interdigitated base and emitter coplanar electrodes that reach an efficiency of 6.5% when only 64% of the footprint area of the device is covered with p-type Si wire light-absorbers. To the best of our knowledge, this is the best efficiency reported so far for a Schottky-type wire-based solar cell; a simple extrapolation of the surface area suggests that an efficiency of more than 10% can be reached, which is comparable to that of single-junction hydrogenated amorphous Si cells. We also compare the Schottky-type cell with a “control” p–i–n one using the same device layout and the same nickel silicide nanowire random connection process: the efficiency of the p–i–n cell is higher (∼8%) but this is due to a higher VOC, the short-circuit current density (ISC) being very similar in both cases, close to 20 mA/cm2. The maximum temperature reached throughout the fabrication process of the cells (whether Schottky-type or p–i–n) is 550 °C, corresponding to the growth of the crystalline Si wires. Altogether, the results presented here hold promises toward cheap photovoltaics based on the use of randomly organized and randomly connected Si wire arrays.

The van der Waals (vdW) structures of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) have been studied extensively owing to the excellent electronic, optoelectronic, and catalytic performance with the atomic-scale sharpness of the interfaces. In addition, the presence of substitution and redox reactions in the vdW gaps also provides huge potential to be employed as a nanoscale reactor. Herein, the vdW gap of colloidal MoS2is reported as a natural template for the formation of CoMo bimetallic oxide nanoparticles (BMONPs) with highly uniform size (∼4 nm), which resulted in further synthesis of the thin multiwalled carbon nanotubes with extremely narrow diameter distribution. This study not only pioneers a new application of TMDCs but also provides an efficient means to control the size of nanomaterials, which directly affect material properties.

With the emergence of multidrug-resistant bacteria, photothermal therapy has been proposed as an alternative to antibiotics for targeting and killing pathogens. In this study, two M13 bacteriophage polymorphs were studied as nanoscaffolds for plasmonic bactericidal agents. Receptor-binding proteins found on the pIII minor coat protein targeted Escherichia colibacteria with F-pili (F+strain), while a gold-binding peptide motif displayed on the pVIII major coat protein templated Au nanoparticles. Temperature-dependent exposure to a chloroform–water interface transformed the native filamentous phage into either rod-like or spheroid structures. The morphology, geometry, and size of the polymorphs, as well as the receptor-binding protein and host cell receptor interaction were studied using electron microscopy. Au/template structures were formed through incubation with Au colloid, and optical absorbance was measured. Despite the closely packed Au nanoparticle layer on the surface the viral scaffolds, electron microscopy confirmed that host receptor affinity was retained. Photothermal bactericidal studies were performed using 532 nm laser irradiation with a variety of powers and exposure times. Bacterial viability was assessed using colony count. With the shape-modified M13 scaffolds, up to 64% of E. coliwere killed within 20 min. These studies demonstrate the promise of i-form and s-form polymorphs for the directed plasmonic-based photothermal killing of bacteria.

Thermosensitive liposomes are major drug delivery carriers, which enable targeting of drugs and burst release of the drugs from the liposomes at the site of action by applying a local heat stimulation above body temperature. Although the burst release is significant for a one-shot high-rate release of drugs at the target site, this type of release has a limited sustained action of the drugs. In this study, we report the alkali-encapsulating thermosensitive liposomes enabling environment pH regulation by sustained continuous cargo release at human body temperature. The liposomes encapsulating alkalis successfully neutralized the environmental acids for hours by releasing the alkalis and prevented acid erosion of hydroxyapatite matrix. Taken together, the present liposomes are effective for the sustained release of cargo at body temperature, specifically the alkali-encapsulating liposomes can be a preventing agent for dental caries in the oral cavity. The sustained release under endogenous body heat characteristics of thermosensitive liposomes showcased in this study can also be extended for prolonged intravenous drug exposure from targeted liposomal drug nanotherapeutics in the near future.

Amorphous molybdenum selenide nanopowder, obtained by refluxing Mo(CO)6and Se precursors in dichlorobenzene, shows several structural and electrochemical similarities to the amorphous molybdenum sulfide analogue. The molybdenum selenide displays attractive catalytic properties for the hydrogen evolution reaction in water over a wide range of pH. In a pH 0 solution, it operates with a small onset overpotential of 125 mV and requires an overpotential of 270 mV for generating a catalytic current of 10 mA/cm2. Compared with molybdenum sulfide, the selenide analogue is more robust in a basic electrolyte. Therefore, molybdenum selenide is a potential candidate for incorporating within an electrolyzer or a photoelectrochemical cell for water electrolysis in acidic, neutral, or alkaline medium.

Nanomaterials shaped as rings are interesting nanostructures with control of the materials properties at the nanoscale. Nanoring plasmonic resonators provide tunable optical resonances in the near-infrared with application in sensing. Fabrication of nanorings can be carried out via top-down approaches based on electron beam lithography with high control of the ring size parameters but at high cost. Alternatively, fabrication via self-assembly approaches has a higher speed/lower cost but at the cost of control of ring parameters. Current colloidal lithography approaches can provide nanoring fabrication over large areas but only of specific materials and a select set of rings (large ring diameters or small rings with ultrathin walls). We extend Hole-mask Colloidal Lithography to use ring shaped holes, allow the deposition of arbitrary materials, and allow the independent tuning of ring-wall thickness over a large range of values. We present a generic approach for the fabrication of nanorings formed from a range of materials including low cost (e.g., Cu, Al) and nonplasmonic (e.g., W) materials and with control of ring wall thickness and diameter allowing tuning of ring parameters and materials for applications in nanooptics and beyond.

We report a versatile strategy to exploit parafilm waste as a carbon precursor for fabrication of freestanding, hollow few-layer graphene fiber mesh (HFGM) structures without use of any gaseous carriers/promoters via an annealing route. The freestanding HFGMs possess good mechanical flexibility, tailorable transparency, and high electrical conductivity, consequently qualifying them as promising electrochemical electrodes. Because of the hollow spaces, electrolyte ions can easily access into and contact with interior surfaces of the graphene fibers, accordingly increasing electrode/electrolyte interfacial area. As expected, solid-state supercapacitors based on the HFGMs exhibit a considerable enhancement in specific capacitance (20–30 fold) as compared to those employing chemical vapor deposition compact graphene films. Moreover, the parafilm waste is found to be beneficial for one-step fabrication of nanocarbon/few-layer graphene composite meshes with superior electrochemical performance, outstanding superhydrophobic property, good self-cleaning ability, and great promise for oil spill cleanup.

We directly synthesize MoWS2nanosheets on conductive carbon nanotube yarn (MoWS2/CNTY) and carbon fiber cloth (MoWS2/CC) through a fast and low-temperature thermolysis method to obtain flexible catalyst electrodes that show high performance in the hydrogen evolution reaction. Small Tafel slopes of 41.8 and 46.7 mV dec–1are achieved for MoWS2/CC and MoWS2/CNTY, respectively, by optimizing the density of the exposed active edge sites of vertically aligned MoWS2on CNTY and CC. Furthermore, the catalyst electrodes demonstrate good electrocatalytic stability over 36 h. The proposed technique for fabricating high-performance, binder-free, and flexible catalyst electrodes is more accessible and faster than conventional methods.

Hot-electron chemistry at gold nanoparticle (AuNP) surfaces has received much attention recently because its understanding provides a basis for plasmonic photocatalysis and photovoltaics. Nonradiative decay of excited surface plasmons produces energetic hot charge carriers that transfer to adsorbate molecules and induce chemical reactions. Such plasmon-driven reactions, however, have been limited to a few systems, notably the dimerization of 4-aminobenzenethiol to 4,4′-dimercaptoazobenzene. In this work, we explore a new class of plasmon-driven reactions associated with a unimolecular bond cleavage process. We unveil the mechanism of the decarboxylation reaction of 4-mercaptobenzoic acid and extend the mechanism to account for the β-cleavage reaction of 4-mercaptobenzyl alcohol. Combining the construction of well-controlled nanogap systems and sensitive Raman spectroscopy with methodical changes of experimental conditions (laser wavelengths, interface materials, pH, ambient gases, etc.), we track the hot charge carriers from the formation to the transfer to reactants, which provides insights into how plasmon excitation eventually leads to the C–C bond cleavage of the molecules in the nanogap.

Conformal growth of atomic-thick semiconductor layers on patterned substrates can boost up the performance of electronic and optoelectronic devices remarkably. However, conformal growth is a very challenging technological task, since the control of the growth processes requires utmost precision. Herein, we report on conformal growth and characterization of monolayer MoS2on planar, microrugged, and nanorugged SiO2/Si substrates via metal-organic chemical vapor deposition. The continuous and conformal nature of monolayer MoS2on the rugged surface was verified by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. Strain effects were examined by photoluminescence (PL) and Raman spectroscopy. Interestingly, the photoresponsivity (∼254.5 mA/W) of as-grown MoS2on the nanorugged substrate was 59 times larger than that of the planar sample (4.3 mA/W) under a small applied bias of 0.1 V. This value is record high when compared with all previous MoS2-based photocurrent generation under low or zero bias. Such enhancement in the photoresponsivity arises from a large active area for light-matter interaction and local strain for PL quenching, wherein the latter effect is the key factor and unique in the conformally grown monolayer on the nanorugged surface.

This paper reports the on-demand artificial muscle relaxation using a thermosensitive liposome encapsulating γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) inhibitory neurotransmitter. Muscle relaxation is not feasible in principle, although muscle contraction can be easily induced by electrical stimulation. Herein, thermosensitive liposomes (phase transition temperature = 40 °C) were synthesized to encapsulate GABA and were injected into a leg of a living beetle. The leg was wrapped around by a Ni–Cr wire heater integrated with a thermocouple to enable the feedback control and to manipulate the leg temperature. The injected leg was temporarily immobilized by heating it up to 45 °C. The leg did not swing even by electrically stimulating the leg muscle. Subsequently, the leg recovered to swing. The result indicates that GABA was released from liposomes and fed to the leg muscle, enabling temporal muscle relaxation.

This Review provides a comprehensive analysis of recent development in the field of aggregation-induced emission (AIE)-active tetraphenylethylene (TPE) luminophores and their applications in biomolecular science. It begins with a discussion of the diverse range of structural motifs that have found particular applications in sensing, and demonstrates that TPE structures and their derivatives have been used for a diverse range of analytes such as such as H+, anions, cations, heavy metals, organic volatiles, and toxic gases. Advances are discussed in depth where TPE is utilized as a mechanoluminescent material in bioinspired receptor units with specificity for analytes for such as glucose or RNA. The rapid advances in sensor research make this summary of recent developments in AIE-active TPE luminophores timely, in order to disseminate the advantages of these materials for sensing of analytes in solution, as well as the importance of solid and aggregated states in controlling sensing behavior.

Hybrid structures of two-dimensional (2D) materials and quantum dots (QDs) are particularly interesting in the field of nanoscale optoelectronic devices because QDs are efficient light absorbers and can inject photocarriers into thin layers of 2D transition-metal dichalcogenides, which have high carrier mobility. In this study, we present a heterostructure that consists of a monolayer of tungsten diselenide (ML WSe2) covered by nitrogen-doped graphene QDs (N-GQDs). The improved photoluminescence of ML WSe2is attributed to the dominant neutral exciton emission caused by the n-doping effect. Owing to strong light absorption and charge transfer from N-GQDs to ML WSe2, N-GQD-covered ML WSe2showed up to 480% higher photoresponsivity than that of a pristine ML WSe2photodetector. The hybrid photodetector exhibits good environmental stability, with 46% performance retention after 30 days under ambient conditions. The photogating effect also plays a key role in the improvement of hybrid photodetector performance. On applying the back-gate voltage modulation, the hybrid photodetector shows a responsivity of 2578 A W–1, which is much higher than that of the ML WSe2-based device.

Here, we propose a simple method for direct synthesis of a Si@SiC composite derived from a SiO2@C precursor via a Mg thermal reduction method as an anode material for Li-ion batteries. Owing to the extremely high exothermic reaction between SiO2and Mg, along with the presence of carbon, SiC can be spontaneously produced with the formation of Si. The synthesized Si@SiC was composed of well-mixed SiC and Si nanocrystallites. The SiC content of the Si@SiC was adjusted by tuning the carbon content of the precursor. Among the resultant Si@SiC materials, the Si@SiC-0.5 sample, which was produced from a precursor containing 4.37 wt % of carbon, exhibits excellent electrochemical characteristics, such as a high first discharge capacity of 1642 mAh g–1and 53.9% capacity retention following 200 cycles at a rate of 0.1C. Even at a high rate of 10C, a high reversible capacity of 454 mAh g–1was obtained. Surprisingly, at a fixed discharge rate of C/20, the Si@SiC-0.5 electrode delivered a high capacity of 989 mAh g–1at a charge rate of 20C. In addition, a full cell fabricated by coupling a lithiated Si@SiC-0.5 anode and a LiCoO2cathode exhibits excellent cyclability over 50 cycles. This outstanding electrochemical performance of Si@SiC-0.5 is attributed to the SiC phase, which acts as a buffer layer that stabilizes the nanostructure of the Si active phase and enhances the electrical conductivity of the electrode.

Use of lithium ion batteries is currently the method of choice when it comes to local stationary storage of electrical energy. In the search for an alternative system, fluoride ion batteries (FIBs) emerge as a candidate due to their high theoretical capacity, and no lithium is needed for its operation. To improve the cycling performance and lower the working temperature of a solid-state battery, one of the critical components is the electrolyte, which needs advanced performance. This paper aims at developing an electrolyte with enhanced ionic conductivity for fluoride ions, to be used in a FIB. Tysonite La1–xBaxF3–x(0 ≤ x≤ 0.15) solid solutions were synthesized by a facile wet chemical method, and its ionic conductivity was analyzed using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. A composition study shows that the conductivity reaches a maximum of 1.26 × 10–4S·cm–1at 60 °C for the La0.95Ba0.05F2.95pellet sintered at 800 °C for 20 h, which is 1 order of magnitude higher than that for the as-prepared pellet and 2 times higher than the conductivity of sintered ball-milled batches. The reason for this dramatic increment is the more efficient decrement of grain boundary resistance upon sintering. Morphological, chemical, and structural characterizations of solid electrolytes were studied by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy , energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, physisorption by the Brunauer–Emmett–Teller method, and transmission electron microscopy. Electrochemical testing was carried out for the FIB cell using La0.95Ba0.05F2.95as electrolyte due to its highest conductivity among the compositions, Ce as anode, and BiF3as a cathode. The cycling performance was found to be considerably improved when compared to our earlier work, which used the ball-milled electrolyte.

Chitin nanocrystals have been used as a liquid crystalline template to fabricate layered oxide semiconductor aerogels. Anisotropic chitin liquid crystals are transformed to sponge-like aerogels by hydrothermally cross-linked gelation and lyophilization-induced solidification. The hydrothermal gelation of chitin aqueous suspensions then proceeds with peroxotitanate to form hydrogel composites that recover to form aerogels after freeze-drying. The homogeneous peroxotitanate/chitin composites are calcined to generate freestanding titania aerogels that exhibit the nanostructural integrity of layered chitin template. Our extended investigations show that coassembling chitin nanocrystals with other metal-based precursors also yielded semiconductor aerogels of perovskite BaTiO3and CuOxnanocrystals. The potential of these materials is great to investigate these chitin sponges for biomedicine and these semiconductor aerogels for photocatalysis, gas sensing, and other applications. Our results present a new aerogel templating method of highly porous, ultralight materials with chitin liquid crystals.

Corrosion protection of complex surface is an active area of research due to its importance to commercial applications such as electrochemical fabrication. However, conventional coatings exhibit limited conductivity, thermal stability, and durability and are thus not suitable. Recent work has shown the potential of graphene, a two-dimensional carbon allotrope, for corrosion protection. The studies, however, limited themselves to simple planar geometries that provide limited insight in the applicability to relevant morphologies such as mesh electrodes and roughened surfaces. We here study the corrosion protection ability of tubular graphene (TG) on Ni-wires as a model system for such complex geometries. TG-covered Ni wires of approximately 50 μm diameters were produced by the annealing of cellulose acetate (CA) on Ni. The high quality of the TG coating was confirmed by Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and electrical measurements. We show that the graphene layer number could be controlled by adjusting the CA membrane quantity. We found a direct relation between the degree of corrosion inhibition with the variation of graphene layer number. The increase of graphene layers on a Ni surface could enhance its corrosion inhibition in acidic, basic, and marine environments, which shows the potential of our approach for future applications.

We designed, synthesized, and characterized a series of novel electron deficient small molecule nonfullerene acceptors based on 1,8-naphthalimide (NAI) and 9-fluorenone (FN) with different branched alkyl chains using various techniques. These molecules are based on an acceptor–donor–acceptor–donor–acceptor (A1–D–A2–D–A1) molecular design configuration with NAI as the end-capping acceptor (A1), FN as electron-withdrawing central (A2) group, and thiophene ring as a donor (D) unit. These materials are named as NAI-FN-NAI (BO)and NAI-FN-NAI (HD)where BO and HD represent butyloctyl and hexyldecyl alkyl groups, respectively. To further modify energy levels of these materials, we converted the weak electron withdrawing ketonic group (CO) attached to the FN moiety of NAI-FN-NAI (BO)to a stronger electron withdrawing cyano group (CN) to obtain the compound NAI-FCN-NAI (BO)by keeping the same alkyl chain. The optical, electrochemical, and thermal properties of the new acceptors were studied. The materials exhibited higher to medium band gaps, low lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy levels, and highly thermally stable properties. Organic solar cell devices employing conventional poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) a donor polymer and the newly designed small molecules as the acceptor were investigated. Among all new materials, organic solar cell devices based on NAI-FN-NAI (BO)as an acceptor exhibit the highest performance with an open circuit voltage (VOC) of 0.88 V, a short-circuit current density (JSC) of 9.1 mAcm–2, a fill factor (FF) of 45%, and an overall power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 3.6%. This is the first report of 9-fluorenone based nonfullerene acceptor with P3HT donor in organic solar cell devices with such a promising performance.

The length of single crystalline nanowires (NWs) offers a perfect pathway for electron transfer, while the small diameter of the NWs hampers thermal losses to tje environment, substrate, and metal electrodes. Therefore, Joule self-heating effect is nearly ideal for operating NW gas sensors at ultralow power consumption, without additional heaters. The realization of the self-heated NW sensors using the “pick and place” approach is complex, hardly reproducible, low yield, and not applicable for mass production. Here, we present the sensing capability of the self-heated networked SnO2NWs effectively prepared by on-chip growth. Our developed self-heated sensors exhibit a good response of 25.6 to 2.5 ppm NO2gas, while the response to 500 ppm H2, 100 ppm NH3, 100 ppm H2S, and 500 ppm C2H5OH is very low, indicating the good selectivity of the sensors to NO2gas. Furthermore, the detection limit is very low, down to 82 parts-per-trillion. As-obtained sensing performance under self-heating mode is nearly identical to that under external heating mode. While the power consumption under self-heating mode is extremely low, around hundreds of microwatts, as scaled-down the size of the electrode is below 10 μm. The selectivity of the sensors can be controlled simply by tuning the loading power that enables simple detection of NO2in mixed gases. Remarkable performance together with a significantly facile fabrication process of the present sensors enhances the potential application of NW sensors in next generation technologies such as electronic noses, the Internet of Things, and smartphone sensing.

Plasmonic nanoparticles exhibit unique properties that distinguish them from other nanomaterials, including vibrant visible colors, the generation of local electric fields, the production of hot charge carriers, and localized heat emission. These properties are particularly enhanced in the narrow nanogaps formed between nanostructures. Therefore, creating nanogaps in a controlled fashion is the key to achieving a fundamental understanding of plasmonic phenomena originating from the nanogaps and developing advanced nanomaterials with enhanced performance for diverse applications. One of the most effective approaches to creating nanogaps is to assemble individual nanoparticles into a clustered structure. In this study, we present a fast, facile, and highly efficient method for preparing core@satellite (CS) nanoassembly structures using gold nanoparticles of various shapes and sizes, including nanospheres, nanocubes (AuNCs), nanorods, and nanotriangular prisms. The sequential assembly of these building blocks on glass substrates allows us to obtain CS nanostructures with a 100% yield within 4 h. Using 9 different building blocks, we successfully produce 16 distinct CS nanoassemblies and systematically investigate the combinations to search for the highest Raman enhancement. We find that the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) intensity of AuNC@AuNC CS nanoassemblies is 2 orders of magnitude larger than that of other CS nanoassemblies. Theoretical analyses reveal that the intensity and distribution of the electric field induced in the nanogaps by plasmon excitation, as well as the number of molecules in the interfacial region, collectively contribute to the unprecedentedly large SERS enhancement observed for AuNC@AuNC. This study not only presents a novel assembly method that can be extended to produce many other nanoassemblies but also identifies a highly promising SERS material for sensing and diagnostics through a systematic search process.
