ConspectusElectrocatalytic reactions, such as oxygen reduction/evolution reactions and CO 2 reduction reaction that are pivotal for the energy transition, are multistep processes that occur in a nanoscale electric double layer (EDL) at a solid-liquid interface. Conventional analyses based on the Sabatier principle, using binding energies or effective electronic structure properties such as the d-band center as descriptors, are able to grasp overall trends in catalytic activity in specific groups of catalysts. However, thermodynamic approaches often fail to account for electrolyte effects that arise in the EDL, including pH, cation, and anion effects. These effects exert strong impacts on electrocatalytic reactions. There is growing consensus that the local reaction environment (LRE) prevailing in the EDL is the key to deciphering these complex and hitherto perplexing electrolyte effects. Increasing attention is thus paid to designing electrolyte properties, positioning the LRE at center stage. To this end, unraveling the LRE is becoming essential for designing electrocatalysts with specifically tailored properties, which could enable much needed breakthroughs in electrochemical energy science.Theory and modeling are getting more and more important and powerful in addressing this multifaceted problem that involves physical phenomena at different scales and interacting in a multidimensional parametric space. Theoretical models developed for this purpose should treat intrinsic multistep kinetics of electrocatalytic reactions, EDL effects from subnm scale to the scale of 10 nm, and mass transport phenomena bridging scales from <0.1 to 100 μm. Given the diverse physical phenomena and scales involved, it is evident that the challenge at hand surpasses the capabilities of any single theoretical or computational approach.In this Account, we present a hierarchical theoretical framework to address the above challenge. It seamlessly integrates several modules: (i) microkinetic modeling that accounts for various reaction pathways; (ii) an LRE model that describes the interfacial region extending from the nanometric EDL continuously to the solution bulk; (iii) first-principles calculations that provide parameters, e.g ., adsorption energies, activation barriers and EDL parameters. The microkinetic model considers all elementary steps without designating an a priori rate-determining step. The kinetics of these elementary steps are expressed in terms of local concentrations, potential and electric field that are codetermined by EDL charging and mass transport in the LRE model. Vital insights on electrode kinetic phenomena, i.e ., potential-dependent Tafel slopes, cation effects, and pH effects, obtained from this hierarchical framework are then reviewed. Finally, an outlook on further improvement of the model framework is presented, in view of recent developments in first-principles based simulation of electrocatalysis, observations of dynamic reconstruction of catalysts, and machine-learning assisted computational simulations.

To meet the increasing demand for water, potable water providers are turning toward unconventional waters, such as seawater and wastewater. These highly saline and/or heavily contaminated water sources are difficult to treat, demanding the use of advanced technology not typically used to treat conventional water sources such as river water or fresh groundwater. Of these advanced technologies, membrane separation processes are fast becoming the most widely used methods to convert these marginal waters into useful resources. The main factors contributing to the widespread adoption of membrane separation processes for water treatment include their modular nature, small physical footprint, and relative energy efficiency compared to traditional distillation processes. In addition, membranes present a physical barrier to pathogens, which is an attractive feature in terms of disinfection credits. However, traditional membrane materials suffer from several distinct drawbacks, which include membrane fouling (the accumulation of material on the membrane surface that blocks the flow of water), the need for high-pressure membranes (such as reverse osmosis (RO) or nanofiltration (NF)) or membrane/thermal processes (e.g., membrane distillation (MD)) to remove small contaminant compounds (e.g., trace metals, salt, endocrine disrupting compounds), and a pressure-driven membrane's inability to effectively remove small, uncharged molecules (e.g., N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), phenol, acetone, and boron). Electrically driven physical and chemical phenomena, such as electrophoresis, electrostatic repulsion, dielectrophoresis, and electricity-driven redox reactions, have long been coupled to membrane-based separation processes, in a process known as electrofiltration. However, it is only in recent years that appropriate membrane materials (i.e., electrically conducting membranes (EMs)) have been developed that enable the efficient use of these electro-driven processes. Specifically, the development of EM materials (both polymeric and inorganic) have reduced the energy consumption of electrofiltration by using the membrane as an electrode in an electrochemical circuit. In essence, a membrane-electrode allows for the concentrated delivery of electrical energy directly to the membrane/water interface where the actual separation process takes place. In the past, metal electrodes were placed on either side of the membrane, which resulted in large potentials needed to drive electrochemical/electrokinetic phenomena. The use of a membrane-electrode dramatically reduces the required potentials, which reduces energy consumption and can also eliminate electrocorrosion and the formation of undesirable byproducts. In this Account, we review recent developments in the field of electrofiltration, with a focus on two water treatment applications: desalination and water reuse (wastewater or contaminated groundwater recycling). Specifically, we discuss how EMs can be used to minimize multiple forms of fouling (biofouling, mineral scaling, organic fouling); how electrochemical reactions at the membrane/water interface are used to destroy toxic contaminants, clean a membrane surface, and transform the local pH environment, which enhances the rejection of certain contaminants; how electric fields and electrostatic forces can be used to reorient molecules at the membrane/water interface; and how electrical energy can be transformed into thermal energy to drive separation processes. A special emphasis is placed on explicitly defining the additional energy consumption associated with the electrochemical phenomena, as well as the additional cost associated with fabricating EM materials. In addition, we will discuss current limitations of the electrofiltration process, with particular attention given to the current limitations of membrane materials and the future research needs in the area of membrane materials and module development.

Because of the tailorable photoelectric properties derived from judicious molecular design and large-area and low-temperature processability especially on flexible substrates, design and synthesis of new organic π-functional materials is always a central topic in the field of organic optoelectronics, which siginificantly contributed to the development of high-performance optoelectronic devices such as organic photovoltaics (OPVs), organic field-effect transistors (OFETs), and organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Compared with polymers, small molecules with well-defined molecular structures benefit the establishment of structure-property relationships, which may provide valuable guidelines for the design of new optoelectronic materials to further promote the device performance. New building blocks are essential for the construction of optoelectronic materials. As is well recognized, thiophene-based functional materials have played an indispensable role in the development of organic optoelectronics. Compared with six-membered benzene, five-membered thiophene shows weaker aromaticity and lower steric hindrance and may provide extra sulfur-sulfur interactions in solid state. Among various thiophene building blocks, thieno[3,4-b]thiophene (TbT) is an asymmetric fused bithiophene containing four functionalization positions, in which the proaromatic thiophene can effectively stabilize the quinoidal resonance of the aromatic thiophene. Thus, TbT exhibits a unique characteristic of quinoid-resonance effect that is powerful to modulate electronic structures. Although the application of TbT in polymer donor materials represented by PTB-7 has achieved a great success, its application in small-molecule optoelectronic materials is almost an untouched field. In this Account, we summerize the rational design of a series of TbT-based small-molecule optoelectronic materials designed and optimized by quinoid-resonance effect, regiochemistry, and side-chain engineering and demonstrate the crucial effect of TbT building blocks on the electronic structures, photophysical and charge transport properties, and photovoltaic performance. With well-defined regioregular oligothieno[3,4-b]thiopenes, we revealed the quinoid-resonance effect of the TbT moiety and its geometric origin. TbT-based small molecules exhibit full-color tunable emissions in the visible to near-infrared regions and excellent performance in OFETs and OPVs. For instance, TbT-based quinoidal molecules with near-infrared fluorescence quantum yields up to 53.1% and TbT-based aromatic molecules with full-color-tunable emissions and high fluorescence quantum yields approaching 100% in polar solvent were designed and synthesized. Solution-processable ambient-stable n-channel organic thin-film transistors based on two-dimensional π-expanded quinoidal terthiophenes with distal or proximal sulfur orientations (2DQTTs) realized a record electron mobility of 5.2 cm 2 V -1 s -1 . Furthermore, TbT-based electron donor and electron acceptor materials were successfully designed for OPV applications delivering high power conversion efficiencies up to 9.26% and 10.07%, respectively. We believe that new TbT-based small-molecule materials designed by a synergy of molecular engineering strategy may not only further promote OFET and OPV performance but also realize more unique applications.

CONSPECTUS: Supramolecular dendritic polymers (SDPs), which perfectly combine the advantages of dendritic polymers with those of supramolecular polymers, are a novel class of non-covalently bonded, highly branched macromolecules with three-dimensional globular topology. Because of their dynamic/reversible nature, unique topological structure, and exceptional physical/chemical properties (e.g., low viscosity, high solubility, and a large number of functional terminal groups), SDPs have attracted increasing attention in recent years in both academic and industrial fields. In particular, the reversibility of non-covalent interactions endows SDPs with the ability to undergo dynamic switching of structure, morphology, and function in response to various external stimuli, such as pH, temperature, light, stress, and redox agents, which further provides a flexible and robust platform for designing and developing smart supramolecular polymeric materials and functional supramolecular devices. The existing SDPs can be systematically classified into the following six major types according to their topological features: supramolecular dendrimers, supramolecular dendronized polymers, supramolecular hyperbranched polymers, supramolecular linear-dendritic block copolymers, supramolecular dendritic-dendritic block copolymers, and supramolecular dendritic multiarm copolymers. These different types of SDPs possess distinct morphologies, unique architectures, and specific functions. Benefiting from their versatile topological structures as well as stimuli-responsive properties, SDPs have displayed not only unique characteristics or advantages in supramolecular self-assembly behaviors (e.g., controllable morphologies, specific performance, and facile functionalization) but also great potential to be promising candidates in various fields. In this Account, we summarize the recent progress in the synthesis, functionalization, and self-assembly of SDPs as well as their potential applications in a wide range of fields. A variety of synthetic methods using non-covalent interactions have been established to prepare different types of SDPs based on varied mono- or multifunctionalized building blocks (e.g., monomer, dendron, dendrimer, and hyperbranched polymer) with homo- or heterocomplementary units. In addition, SDPs can be further endowed with excellent functionalities by employing different modification approaches involving terminal, focal-point, and backbone modification. Similar to conventional dendritic polymers, SDPs can self-assemble into diverse supramolecular structures such as micelles, vesicles, fibers, nanorings, tubes, and many hierarchical structures. Finally, we highlight some typical examples of recent applications of SDP-based systems in biomedical fields (e.g., controlled drug/gene/protein delivery, bioimaging, and biomimetic chemistry), nanotechnology (e.g., nanoreactors, catalysis, and molecular imprinting), and functional materials. The current research on SDPs is still at the very early stage, and much more work needs to be done. We anticipate that future studies of SDPs will focus on developing multifunctional, hierarchical supramolecular materials toward their practical applications by utilization of cooperative non-covalent interactions.

CONSPECTUS: DNA performs a vital function as a carrier of genetic code, but in the field of nanotechnology, DNA molecules can catalyze chemical reactions in the cell, that is, DNAzymes, or bind with target-specific ligands, that is, aptamers. These functional DNAs with different modifications have been developed for sensing, imaging, and therapeutic systems. Thus, functional DNAs hold great promise for future applications in nanotechnology and bioanalysis. However, these functional DNAs face challenges, especially in the field of biomedicine. For example, functional DNAs typically require the use of cationic transfection reagents to realize cellular uptake. Such reagents enter the cells, increasing the difficulty of performing bioassays in vivo and potentially damaging the cell's nucleus. To address this obstacle, nanomaterials, such as metallic, carbon, silica, or magnetic materials, have been utilized as DNA carriers or assistants. In this Account, we describe selected examples of functional DNA-containing nanomaterials and their applications from our recent research and those of others. As models, we have chosen to highlight DNA/nanomaterial complexes consisting of gold nanoparticles, graphene oxides, and aptamer-micelles, and we illustrate the potential of such complexes in biosensing, imaging, and medical diagnostics. Under proper conditions, multiple ligand-receptor interactions, decreased steric hindrance, and increased surface roughness can be achieved from a high density of DNA that is bound to the surface of nanomaterials, resulting in a higher affinity for complementary DNA and other targets. In addition, this high density of DNA causes a high local salt concentration and negative charge density, which can prevent DNA degradation. For example, DNAzymes assembled on gold nanoparticles can effectively catalyze chemical reactions even in living cells. And it has been confirmed that DNA-nanomaterial complexes can enter cells more easily than free single-stranded DNA. Nanomaterials can be designed and synthesized in needed sizes and shapes, and they possess unique chemical and physical properties, which make them useful as DNA carriers or assistants, excellent signal reporters, transducers, and amplifiers. When nanomaterials are combined with functional DNAs to create novel assay platforms, highly sensitive biosensing and high-resolution imaging result. For example, gold nanoparticles and graphene oxides can quench fluorescence efficiently to achieve low background and effectively increase the signal-to-background ratio. Meanwhile, gold nanoparticles themselves can be colorimetric reporters because of their different optical absorptions between monodispersion and aggregation. DNA self-assembled nanomaterials contain several properties of both DNA and nanomaterials. Compared with DNA-nanomaterial complexes, DNA self-assembled nanomaterials more closely resemble living beings, and therefore they have lower cytotoxicity at high concentrations. Functional DNA self-assemblies also have high density of DNA for multivalent reaction and three-dimensional nanostructures for cell uptake. Now and in the future, we envision the use of DNA bases in making designer molecules for many challenging applications confronting chemists. With the further development of artificial DNA bases using smart organic synthesis, DNA macromolecules based on elegant molecular assembly approaches are expected to achieve great diversity, additional versatility, and advanced functions.

Electronic and optical properties of molecules and molecular solids are traditionally considered from the perspective of the frontier orbitals and their intermolecular interactions. How molecules condense into crystalline solids, however, is mainly attributed to the long-range polarization interaction. In this Account, we show that long-range polarization also introduces a distinctive set of diffuse molecular electronic states, which in quantum structures or solids can combine into nearly-free-electron (NFE) bands. These NFE properties, which are usually associated with good metals, are vividly evident in sp(2) hybridized carbon materials, specifically graphene and its derivatives. The polarization interaction is primarily manifested in the screening of an external charge at a solid/vacuum interface. It is responsible for the universal image potential and the associated unoccupied image potential (IP) states, which are observed even at the He liquid/vacuum interface. The molecular electronic properties that we describe are derived from the IP states of graphene, which float above and below the molecular plane and undergo free motion parallel to it. Rolling or wrapping a graphene sheet into a nanotube or a fullerene transforms the IP states into diffuse atom-like orbitals that are bound primarily to hollow molecular cores, rather than the component atoms. Therefore, we named them the superatom molecular orbitals (SAMOs). Like the excitonic states of semiconductor nanostructures or the plasmonic resonances of metallic nanoparticles, SAMOs of fullerene molecules, separated by their van der Waals distance, can combine to form diatomic molecule-like orbitals of C(60) dimers. For larger aggregates, they form NFE bands of superatomic quantum structures and solids. The overlap of the diffuse SAMO wavefunctions in van der Waals solids provides a different paradigm for band formation than the valence or conduction bands formed by interaction of the more tightly bound, directional highest occupied molecular orbitals (HOMOs) or the lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals (LUMOs). Therefore, SAMO wavefunctions provide insights into the design of molecular materials with potentially superior properties for electronics. Physicists and chemists have thought of fullerenes as atom-like building blocks of electronic materials, and superatom properties have been attributed to other elemental gas-phase clusters based on their size-dependent electronic structure and reactivity. Only in the case of fullerenes, however, do the superatom properties survive as delocalized electronic bands even in the condensed phase. We emphasize, however, that the superatom states and their bands are usually unoccupied and therefore do not contribute to intermolecular bonding. Instead, their significance lies in the electronic properties they confer when electrons are introduced, such as when they are excited optically or probed by the atomically sharp tip of a scanning tunneling microscope. We describe the IP states of graphene as the primary manifestation of the universal polarization response of a molecular sheet and how these states in turn define the NFE properties of materials derived from graphene, such as graphite, fullerenes, and nanotubes. Through low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (LT-STM), time-resolved two-photon photoemission spectroscopy (TR-2PP), and density functional theory (DFT), we describe the real and reciprocal space electronic properties of SAMOs for single C(60) molecules and their self-assembled 1D and 2D quantum structures on single-crystal metal surfaces.

When a material of low dielectric constant is excited electronically from the absorption of a photon, the Coulomb attraction between the excited electron and the hole gives rise to an atomic H-like quasi-particle called an exciton. The bound electron-hole pair also forms across a material interface, such as the donor/acceptor interface in an organic heterojunction solar cell; the result is a charge-transfer (CT) exciton. On the basis of typical dielectric constants of organic semiconductors and the sizes of conjugated molecules, one can estimate that the binding energy of a CT exciton across a donor/acceptor interface is 1 order of magnitude greater than k(B)T at room temperature (k(B) is the Boltzmann constant and T is the temperature). How can the electron-hole pair escape this Coulomb trap in a successful photovoltaic device? To answer this question, we use a crystalline pentacene thin film as a model system and the ubiquitous image band on the surface as the electron acceptor. We observe, in time-resolved two-photon photoemission, a series of CT excitons with binding energies < or = 0.5 eV below the image band minimum. These CT excitons are essential solutions to the atomic H-like Schrodinger equation with cylindrical symmetry. They are characterized by principal and angular momentum quantum numbers. The binding energy of the lowest lying CT exciton with 1s character is more than 1 order of magnitude higher than k(B)T at room temperature. The CT(1s) exciton is essentially the so-called exciplex and has a very low probability of dissociation. We conclude that hot CT exciton states must be involved in charge separation in organic heterojunction solar cells because (1) in comparison to CT(1s), hot CT excitons are more weakly bound by the Coulomb potential and more easily dissociated, (2) density-of-states of these hot excitons increase with energy in the Coulomb potential, and (3) electronic coupling from a donor exciton to a hot CT exciton across the D/A interface can be higher than that to CT(1s) as expected from energy resonance arguments. We suggest a design principle in organic heterojunction solar cells: there must be strong electronic coupling between molecular excitons in the donor and hot CT excitons across the D/A interface.
