This article reports on the environmental aspects of hospital laundry centers in terms of water use and energy consumption. Hospitals have unique laundry needs related to staff and patient clothing, bloodstains, soiled bedding, sanitation, and sterilization. The article also discusses the thermal and electrical needs for washing machines, time-dependent washing, steam, and energy optimization. Information on parameter effects for laundries, wash programs, and energy conservation research is provided as well.
