The bootstrap power supply is widely used in the industry to provide a floating power supply for high side switch gate drives due to low cost and small footprint features. However, the high side switch performance is limited by a bootstrap capacitor. In this paper, inverter output voltage utilization is investigated in over-modulation mode for bootstrap. The impact to a motor drive maximum output voltage at different frequencies are studied to understand the bootstrap power supply operation limits. The performance is further studied with extra load for a bootstrap capacitor to simulate the case when bootstrap also provides power to phase sensing circuitry. Theoretical analysis, simulation and experiment results are provided in this paper.
