Magnetic transmission has the advantages of non-contact transmission, no friction, and noise or vibration weak. In 2001, D. Howe proposed a field modulated magnetic transmission, which has higher torque density and higher gear ratio than the conventional magnetic transmission[1]. Moreover, The existing transmission mainly focuses on single degree of freedom movement. In this paper, a novel high-performance magnetic transmission for converting between rotary and rectilinear motion is proposed by incorporating the merits of field modulation principle and the traditional gear rack. The paper describes the construction, operation principle, design and analysis, performance comparison and experiments. The results show the proposed magnetic transmission possesses significant advantages in maximum static force and torque than traditional gear rack.
