We present that adaptive control can be applied to achieve the highest contrast ratio at the desired fluorescence intensity from a target fluorophore in the selective excitation with ultrabroadband optical pulses.

We report the observation of coherent phonon oscillations of RBMS excited by the E11 transition in isolated SWNTs. We observe stronger intensity for the (n-m)mod3 = +1 family than for the (n-m)mod3 = -1 family.

We report the manufacturing and optical characterization of microsphere in chalcogenide. We show that high-Q modes of a 9.2 mumm diameter chalcogenide glass can be efficiently excited using a silica tapered fiber.

Gold nanoshells (dielectric silica core/gold shell) are a novel class of hybrid metal nanoparticles whose unique optical properties have spawned new applications including more sensitive molecular assays and cancer therapy. We report a new photo-physical property of nanoshells (NS) whereby these particles glow brightly when excited by near-infrared light. We characterized the luminescence brightness of NS, comparing to that of gold nanorods (NR) and fluorescent beads (FB). We find that NS are as bright as NR and 140 times brighter than FB. To demonstrate the potential application of this bright two-photon-induced photoluminescence (TPIP) signal for biological imaging, we imaged the 3D distribution of gold nanoshells targeted to murine tumors.

We study the effects of excitation pulse intensity, chirp and bandwidth on the ultrafast dynamics of retinal isomerization in bacteriorhodopsin. Variation of these parameters alters the decay times of the I and J conformations.

Narrowband THz radiation drives transitions between bound electron states in GaAs neutral donors. Elastic light scattering from a donor bound exciton resonance allows time-resolved measurements of the excited state lifetime and THz-induced AC Stark effect.

Both dipolar and quadrupolar modes are proved to be effectively excited and strong field enhancement is found in the gap of the V-shaped optical resonant antenna by using FDTD simulations.

We present an analysis of the lineshape and strength of the fluorescence emitted by optically excited atoms and coupled to an optical fiber. We show the frequency-position selectivity and asymmetry of the spectral emission line. The theoretical analysis is compared with experimental data.

The loss due to excited-state absorption into the continuum was calculated for high-power mid-infrared quantum cascade lasers. We find this loss to be a significant fraction of the gain at the laser wavelength.

A sixfold acceleration of the phase shift recovery time in photonic crystal/quantum dot waveguides having a Purcell enhanced spontaneous emission peak resonant to the excited state of the quantum dots is experimentally demonstrated.

We observe large vibrationally-induced modulations in high order harmonic conversion in N2O4. We explain this unexpected result as due to the changing electronic structure induced by the vibration, leading to preferential emission at the outer turning point of the vibration.

Using pump-probe reflectometry, we study the ultrafast excited-state dynamics in thin films of BuPTCD, an organic semiconductor, deposited on gold nanoparticles. We observe depletion of the ground state and excited state absorption after photo-excitation.

We report THz emission from free standing InAs nanowires. The radiation is attributed to coherent plasmon motion excited by ultrashort laser pulses and exhibits power enhancement and spectral red-shift compared to an InAs planar surface.

We demonstrate that a widely-tunable far-IR source developed by us recently can be used to identify weak inversion and inversion-rotational transitions within the nu2=1 excited state of NH3 molecule. Seven transition peaks have been observed.

We experimentally demonstrate that the slave laser oscillating on the ground state (GS) or excited state (ES) transitions can be locked through the injection of optical pulses generated via the opposite transition bands, i.e. the ES or GS transition, respectively.
