- Abstract
In examining the influence that Henri Drouot had on historians of early modern France in the English speaking world, this article shows that his work formed an essential reference for anyone seeking to make sense of the French Wars of Religion. Although no-one within this group adopted his well-known thesis of the "bourgeoisie seconde" in order to understand the League movement as it played out in different provincial cities, all of them nevertheless have turned to Mayenne et la Bourgogne as an important model for understanding the relationship between social interests and political action that it has been necessary to address. The number of citations of Drouot's works has therefore increased steadily with the development of the profession as a whole, and numerous North American scholars of France have pointed to the importance of his example for their own work.
