Metadata schema and standards are now a part of the information landscape. Librarianship has slowly realized that MARC is only one of a proliferation of metadata standards, and that MARC has many pros and cons related to its age, original conception, and biases. The range of metadata needed to run a digital library and preserve its collections in the long term is much more extensive and complicated than anything in its traditional counterpart. It includes the same'descriptive'information which guides users to the resources they require but must supplement this with comprehensive'administrative'metadata: this encompasses technical details of the files that make up its collections, the documentation of complex intellectual property rights and the extensive set needed to support its preservation in the long-term. To accommodate all of this requires the use of multiple metadata standards, all of which have to be brought together into a single integrated whole.Metadata in the Digital Library is a complete guide to building a digital library metadata strategy from scratch, using established metadata standards bound together by the markup language XML. The book introduces the reader to the theory of metadata and shows how it can be applied in practice. It lays out the basic principles that should underlie any metadata strategy, including its relation to such fundamentals as the digital curation lifecycle, and demonstrates how they should be put into effect. It introduces the XML language and the key standards for each type of metadata, including Dublin Core and MODS for descriptive metadata and PREMIS for its administrative and preservation counterpart. Transmedia is a technique of delivering a single piece of content in individual parts via different media and communication platforms (books, films, TV shows, games, live performances, etc.). This book outlines the legal powers of a major Western nation – Australia – to collect and use location information. Mobile service and social media service providers now have the ability to track, record and store more precise location information. Unlike 4G, 5G mobile communications require that cell towers and antennas be in much closer proximity; as a result, the location data can reveal more personal and sensitive information about individual citizens. Despite this aspect, service providers are required to disclose the data to the authorities, without the need for a judicial warrant. This book was written from the perspective of big location data software analytics, a capability that makes it possible to combine various location data points to create a profile on a given individual's movements, habits, and political, religious and ideological orientation. In this regard, privacy is poorly protected. The rationale used to justify the powers was enforcingserious crimes – terrorism offences. Location data can now be retained for at least two years and be collected to investigate even minor offences. This can be done without the person being reasonably suspected of a criminal offence – when the individual is simply determined to be a person of interest. This poses legal risks to vulnerable communities. And yet, such investigative techniques are deemed lawful and reasonable. At a time when national security is so broadly defined to include economic issues, which in turn overlap with climate change and environmental protection, these legal powers should be reassessed. The book clarifies the complex rules that every citizen must know in order to have agency. Further, it calls upon authorities to reflect and to self-regulate, by making the conscious decision to surrender some of their powers to review by the independent judiciary. Without the requirement for a judicial warrant or judicial review, the powers are unfairly broad. The book pursues an interdisciplinary approach to assess the functionality of mobile telecommunications in direct relation to law enforcement powers and existing judicial precedents. Further, it offers a unifying techno-legal perspective on a complex issue touching on modern privacy law and communications technologies.

Metadata and semantic research is a growing complex ecosystem of conceptual, theoretical, methodological, and technological frameworks, offering innovative computational solutions in the design and development of computer-based systems. Within this perspective, researchers working in the area need to further develop and integrate a broad range of methods, results, and solutions coming from different areas. MTSR has been designed as a forum allowing researchers to present and discuss specialized results as general contributions to the field. This volume collects the papers selected for presentation at the 4th International Conference on Metadata and Semantic Research (MTSR 2010), held in Alcala de Henares––a world heritage city and birthplace of Miguel de Cervantes––at the University of Alcala (October 20–22, 2010). The first MTSR conference was held online in 2005, followed by two more editions: in Corfu (2007) and in Milan (2009). The experience acquired during the past five years, and the warm welcome of MTSR by the research community, encouraged us to organize this new edition of the series, and turn it into a yearly event. According to the number and quality of the contributions submitted for revision, our 2010 effort was again a considerable success.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 6th Metadata and Semantics Research Conference, MTSR 2012, held in Cádiz, Spain, in November 2012.
