This book presents the fundamental features of the design and performance of combined pile-raft foundations (CPRFs). Whereas in a traditional foundation the loads are carried either by the raft or by the piles, the capacity of CPRFs is assessed for the foundation as a whole, reducing total and differential settlements economically.The five chapters provide an overview of the historical development of piled rafts in practice and research, and of the design concepts developed for piled rafts over the last decades. Fundamental aspects of their bearing behaviour are presented, as well as an overview of the framework of the design process for CPRFs, including the safety concept, the design approach summarised in the ISSMGE Combined Pile-Raft Foundation Guideline (ISSMGE TC 212 2013) and the interaction between structural and geotechnical engineering. For numerical analysis based on the finite element method, guidance is given on creating the model and performing the calculations before providing basic information on the requirements for the site investigation, supervision of the construction process and monitoring of the foundation performance. A new model of health emerged in Britain between 1870 and 1939. Centered on the working body, organized around the concept of efficiency, and grounded in scientific understandings of human labor, scientists, politicians, and capitalists of the era believed that national economic productivity could be maximized by transforming the body of the worker into a machine. At the core of this approach was the conviction that worker productivity was intimately connected to worker health. Under this new “science of work,” fatigue was seen as the ultimate pathology of the working-class body, reducing workers'capacity to perform continued physical or mental labor. As Steffan Blayney shows, the equation between health and efficiency did not go unchallenged. While biomedical and psychological experts sought to render the body measurable, governable, and intelligible, ordinary men and women found ways to resist the logics of productivity and efficiency imposed on them, and to articulate alternative perspectives on work, health, and the body.

Image and Identity in the Ancient Near East: Papers in memoriam Pierre Amiet gathers the papers of two colloquia – one held in Pierre Amiet's honour in Lyon in 2016 and the other held in Paris in 2017, as well as articles by colleagues who wished to dedicate a final tribute to him. The volume consists of two parts. The studies in the first part analyse the body as a biological entity as well as a social, sexual and cultural identity (persona). They show the emotional power of images, the means and media used to achieve this suggestive power, and the different audiences that are the privileged recipients of the different types of production. They also investigate the emotions as they are expressed through the gestures and attitudes of the characters represented. The second part includes articles that are more closely related to the themes that Pierre Amiet has tackled. Two articles deal with his favourite research theme, glyptics. One article takes up the problem of the formation of the state which Pierre Amiet had dealt with in several of his glyptic studies. Other papers are concerned with the organisation of craftsmen and statuary.

The EBW focusses on the material culture from the Neolithic Age to the Hellenistic period, giving attention to the material from the Bronze and Iron Ages, including the Persian period. The geographic regions covered by the entries include primarily the records of Palestine (= the Southern Levant) limited by (excl.) the southern fringe of Lebanon and Hermon (North), the Wadi al-Ariš, the Sinai peninsula and North-Arabia (South), the Mediterranean Sea (West) and the Transjordanian desert (East). If appropriate to the entry, the neighboring evidence from Syria, Lebanon, Egypt, and Mesopotamia is included. The Encyclopedia presents and documents the material culture based on the archaeological, epigraphical, and iconographical data in historical order and documents the state of current research. The entries do not only list or mention the most important material data, but try to synthesize and interpret it within the horizon of a history of Southern Levantine culture, economy, technical development, art, and religion. This book discusses the state of the art of automated essay scoring, its challenges and its potential. One of the earliest applications of artificial intelligence to language data (along with machine translation and speech recognition), automated essay scoring has evolved to become both a revenue-generating industry and a vast field of research, with many subfields and connections to other NLP tasks. In this book, we review the developments in this field against the backdrop of Elias Page's seminal 1966 paper titled'The Imminence of Grading Essays by Computer.'Part 1 establishes what automated essay scoring is about, why it exists, where the technology stands, and what are some of the main issues. In Part 2, the book presents guided exercises to illustrate how one would go about building and evaluating a simple automated scoring system, while Part 3 offers readers a survey of the literature on different types of scoring models, the aspects of essay quality studied in prior research, and the implementation and evaluation of a scoring engine. Part 4 offers a broader view of the field inclusive of some neighboring areas, and Part \ref{part5} closes with summary and discussion. This book discusses the state of the art of automated essay scoring, its challenges and its potential. One of the earliest applications of artificial intelligence to language data (along with machine translation and speech recognition), automated essay scoring has evolved to become both a revenue-generating industry and a vast field of research, with many subfields and connections to other NLP tasks. In this book, we review the developments in this field against the backdrop of Elias Page's seminal 1966 paper titled'The Imminence of Grading Essays by Computer.'Part 1 establishes what automated essay scoring is about, why it exists, where the technology stands, and what are some of the main issues. In Part 2, the book presents guided exercises to illustrate how one would go about building and evaluating a simple automated scoring system, while Part 3 offers readers a survey of the literature on different types of scoring models, the aspects of essay quality studied in prior research,and the implementation and evaluation of a scoring engine. Gudea of Lagash, who ruled at the end of the third millennium B.C., wanted to be remembered as a temple builder. An extensive narrative inscribed on two huge clay cylinders, one of the longest and best preserved Sumerian texts, recounts his construction of the temple of Ningirsu, Lagash's patron deity. More than sixty sculpted limestone fragments belong to several stelae erected in the temples Gudea built and depict their construction. A large number of inscribed and often sculpted, artifacts provide additional information on Gudea's activities. This study treats this visual and textual material as a coherent corpus for the first time. It analyses contents, narrative structure, composition and message. Text and image are compared to elucidate the characteristics of each medium and to arrive at a comprehensive picture of the royal rhetoric of the time. In this compilation, an overview of recent achievements in clinical and biosensor technology in the diagnosis of acute lymphoblastic leukemia is provided. Various aptasensors such as optical, electrochemical and mass-sensitive are presented along with a novel approach for the recognition of cancer markers by molecular imaging methods based on atomic force microscopy, single molecule force spectroscopy and topography and recognition imaging. The authors review the strategies used to screen potential antimelanoma drugs, especially those involved in evaluating drugs in cancer cell lines, in vitro and in vivo, as well as in silico tests used for drug selection. Following this, a study is presented focusing on gastroenteropancreatic carcinoids tumors, rare slow-growing lesions that derive from primitive stem cells of the gut. The authors explore the influence of Traditional Formosan medicine on cancer therapy through a literature review and expert opinion. Three clinical experiences of using Formosan medicine for cancer therapy are discussed: acupuncture, herb, and Formosan medicine tongue diagnosis. The concluding research utilizes the extensive pipelines of the Vienna RNA package for 2D RNA structure prediction, and the result exposes a satisfactory illustration and narration of the predicted RNA structures.

De même, les textes théophaniques du Pentateuque n'évoquent pas un YHWH venant d'Edom ou de Séïr (Ex 2-4 ; 18 ; Nb 10,29-36). Ces traditions s'ignoraient-elles? Prenant comme point de départ ce questionnement, l'auteur tente de comprendre les textes théophaniques méridionaux comme des traces de multiples discours sur les origines de YHWH, probablement liés à un polyyahwisme originel.
