- Abstract
In this comprehensive account of the history and treatment of beriberi, Kenneth Carpenter traces the decades of medical and chemical research that solved the puzzle posed by this mysterious disease. Caused by the lack of a minute quantity of the chemical thiamin, or vitamin B1 in the diet, beriberi is characterized by weakness and loss of feeling in the feet and legs, then swelling from fluid retention, and finally heart failure. Western doctors working in Asia after 1870 saw it as the major disease in native armed forces and prisons. It was at first attributed to miasms (poisonous vapors from damp soil) or to bacterial infections. In Java, chickens fed by chance on white rice lost the use of their legs. On brown rice, where the grain still contained its bran and germ, they remained healthy. Studies in Javanese prisons then showed beriberi also occurring where white (rather than brown) rice was the staple food. Birds were used to assay the potency of fractions extracted from rice bran and, after 20 years, highly active crystals were obtained. In another 10 years their structure was determined and'thiamin'was synthesized. Beriberi is a story of contested knowledge and erratic scientific pathways. It offers a fascinating chronicle of the development of scientific thought, a history that encompasses public health, science, diet, trade, expanding empires, war, and technology. From the preface:This is a medical detective story: beginning with the investigation of a disease that has killed or crippled at least a million people, and then following up clues that ranged much wider. One outcome was the production of a synthetic chemical that we now, nearly all of us, consume in small quantities each day in our food. The detectives had a variety of professions and spoke different languages. Their work ranged from studying the health of laborers in a primitive jungle to the painstaking dissection of individual grains of rice under a microscope. The integrated story of their struggles and successes, culled from old volumes in scattered libraries, forms the subject of this book.In this comprehensive account of the history and treatment of beriberi, Kenneth Carpenter traces the decades of medical and chemical research that solved the puzzle posed by this mysterious disease. - Abstract
Understanding the causes of anemia is critical to inform appropriate strategies to prevent and treat anemia, particularly to reduce the risk of anemia and the burden of disease. The strength of this book lies in its cross-disciplinary nature. This publication summarizes the current state of evidence on the multifactorial causes of anemia, with a specific focus on nutritional anemia. The chapter authors are leading experts in nutrition and global health. The introductory chapters provide an overview of the global burden of anemia prevalence, the economic implications and functional consequences of anemia, and the significance of these factors to guide policy and programs. Subsequent chapters provide current evidence on iron and other micronutrient metabolism and homeostasis in regards to anemia, the multifactorial contributors to anemia (e.g. infection and genetics), and the interactions between nutrients that may contribute to anemia. The summarizing chapters detail program and policy approaches to treat, prevent and reduce anemia in the global context. Nutritional Anemia is a comprehensive resource for those involved in global health and nutrition policy, strategy, programming, or research, and serves as a guide for how government, NGO, and international agencies can effectively treat, prevent and reduce anemia globally.

- Abstract
More than 100 years ago, Dr Casimir Funk suggested the existence of a family of organic substances that are essential for life and thus introduced the concept of “vital amines” as essential nutrients with a specific action, requiring only minute amount with the power to cure a specific disease. Vitamins essential for human health are grouped according to whether they are soluble in water (hydrophilic) or in non-polar solvents (lipophilic). The hydrophilic vitamins are vitamin C and a series known as the vitamin B complex. Vitamin C is a reducing agent, whereas the vitamin B series are components of coenzymes. For example, riboflavin (vitamin B2) is a precursor of flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD) and pantothenate (vitamin B5) is a component of coenzyme A. Indeed, several coenzymes contain a vitamin as part of their structure; this relation is undoubtedly responsible for creating an “essential” role for the vitamin. Since vitamins are involved in a wide range of biological processes and cell function, these are considered as essential nutrients. The essential nature of vitamins as well as their unique biochemistry, molecular mechanisms and cellular function in health and disease are emphasized in this book which will serve as a highly useful resource for health professionals, nutritional scientists, medical students, fellows, residents, and graduate students.

- Abstract
This compilation discusses Aspergillus species, important infectious agents in transplant recipients with high morbidity and mortality rates. Aspergillus fumigatus is the most frequently isolated species and inhalation of the spores is the most common transmission path. The authors explore the effects of different vitamin B therapies (with a special focus on the complex of vitamins B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, and B12) on peripheral nerve regeneration after injury and immediate surgical repair. Following this, the experimental models of nerve injury are described, including pre-existing injury, early-onset nerve injury and neurological symptoms, and the increasing risk for neurological diseases. One study focuses on celiac disease, an autoimmune disorder of the gastrointestinal tract triggered by exposure to dietary gluten in genetically susceptible individuals with human leukocyte antigen DQ2/DQ8 molecules on antigen presenting cells. Non-invasive wireless body sensor networks that image the human brain during mobile activities are studied in the context of the treatment of neurological disabilities and brain-controlled prosthetic limbs. The current literature on the potential effects of nutrition for modifying gut microbiota and incidents of both early and late onset non-communicable diseases is discussed in closing.

- Abstract
Advances in Medicine and Biology. Volume 126 opens with a discussion on fungal infections of the central nervous system and the way they have been known to parallel the incidence of systemic fungal infections in at risk populations. The reported percentages of central nervous system involvement associated with invasive fungal infections range from 3% - 100% depending on the species isolated. Next, the authors discuss the effect of agouti-related peptide on the increase of food intake and body weight in animal models of cachexia, proposing agouti-related peptide as a possible anti-anorexigenic drug. This compilation includes the first complete overview of human leukocyte antigen variation across Austronesian populations and includes the effects of admixture along the migration path during their 5,000 year diaspora. The authors conclude that intermarriage has shifted allele frequencies in migrant peoples from those found in their original pure Austronesian stock (Taiwanese natives) towards those populations with which they have since become blended. Following this, a review of the factors affecting the photodegradation reaction and mechanism of riboflavin and related compounds is provided. Riboflavin belongs to the family of vitamin B complex and is present in a number of food products. Additionally, this book addresses the determination that the existence of the majority of microorganisms in the form of three-dimensional associates on the phase interface proves the significant survivable advantages as compare with selective ones. Afterwards, the authors present their designed dimeric dipeptide called GK-2 (bis(N-succinyl-Lglutamyl-L-lysine)hexametylendiamide) on the base of a beta-turn sequence of NGF loop4, which is most exposed to solvent and hence has a significant role in the interaction of NGF with the receptor. Later, the authors analyzed the pharmacological properties of the GlyR in the immature retina and compare those with the adult. Membranes from adult and immature rat retinas were incubated under different conditions in the presence of radioactive glycine or strychnine. Radioactive binding was considered as the specific binding to the GlyR. The closing chapter discusses Professor Werner Kalow (1917-2008), a pioneer in the field of pharmacogenetics/pharmacogenomics, foreseeing future emerging subspecialties such as pharmacoepigenetics/pharmacoepigenomics and pharmacoanthropology. All these disciplines study human individuality and variability, paving the way for a translational personalized medicine. However, they cannot be legitimate if not properly founded by a broader, coherently unified science which deals with method and principles.

- Abstract
Organic pollutants are harmful to the ecological environment and human health. In Photodegradation: Mechanisms and Applications, the authors propose photodegradation as an attractive strategy to remove organic pollutants. Photodegradation only requires suitable photocatalysts and light, and the sun is an inexhaustible light source. Next, the authors investigate the importance of the photochemical process on the fate of profoxydim in water determining kinetic parameters in aqueous media and detecting photoproducts formed. To obtain more information, a phytotoxicity bioassay study of the photodegraded herbicide on plant growth is performed. The photodegradation mechanism of cyanine dyes is examined, as a concise understanding of the photodegradation mechanism of cyanine dyes will result in the proper application of the photodegradation mechanism. Future prospects for the application of the multiphoton photodegradation of cyanine dyes are described. Also discussed is cyanocobalamin or vitamin B12, a component of vitamin B complex that acts as an essential biological co-factor. It plays a vital role in the metabolism of amino acids, fatty acids, hormones and numerous other biological compounds. Vitamin B12 group is chemically known as cobalamins which consist of cyanocobalamin, aquocobalamin, 5-deoxyadenosyl cobalamin and methylcobalamin. As a representative two-dimensional layer-structured transition metal dichalcogenide, tungsten disulfide has gained intensive attention due to its unique optical and electrochemical properties. Thus, one chapter explores WS2 as a photocatalyst for the degradation of organic pollutants, with emphasis on its role in nanocomposites and the mechanism of photocatalysis by WS2 with respect to its bandgap energy and structural features. The concluding review examines the experience in photochemical studies of organic substrates; namely photodegradation of water contaminants and humic acids of a different nature. The influence of VUV and UV radiation on the photodegradation of organic compounds is investigated using electronic absorption and fluorescence spectrometry and chromatography methods.

- Abstract
The extensive consumption of high calorie yielding sugar containing foods and drinks is causing a huge amount of illness in America. This is a potential threat to our culture and can be compared to the effects of chronic lead poisoning that contributed to the decline of the Roman Empire. Lead, leaching out of the glaze used in their wine containers caused multiple symptoms. Though their cause was recognized and reported by one or two individuals, their warnings were ignored.Lead caused the wine to have a sweet taste, thus making it more desirable and increasing its poisonous effects. Sugar, when removed from its naturally occurring source, acts as an addictive pleasure stimulating drug. Its consumption automatically increases the need for vitamin B, easily resulting in its deficiency. The resulting symptoms are reversible at this stage but, if the true cause is unrecognized and treatment neglected, they may become the irreversible symptoms of chronic disease later in life.Could the obesity epidemic, diabetes, and the outbreak of a host of other almost completely unrecognized diseases, be the result of our present dietary mayhem? That's the view expressed in A Nutritional Approach to a Revised Model for Medicine. In this illuminating book, author Derrick Lonsdale, M.D., draws attention to the dangers of the prolific ingestion of sugar that is so widespread today. The book cites case reports to illustrate these dangers and to emphasize the ease with which symptoms may be stemmed in the early stages. However the book also makes it clear that if symptoms are left unrecognized and behavior is left unmodified, these same symptoms become less treatable, giving rise to chronic diseases and other serious health problems.

- Abstract
This volume reviews a series of different publications dealing with orotic acid. Orotic acid was isolated from cow's milk 75 years ago by Biscaro and Belloni in Italy. Fifty years later again Italian scientists described the growth-promoting activity of orotic acid in vitamin B -deficient animals. 12 Orotic acid is the precursor of pyrimidine nucleotides which are involved in many biochemical reactions: UTP and CTP, as substrates for RNA polymerase, and UDP sugars, as substrates for carbohydrate containing macromolecules, e.g. glycogen, glycoproteins and glycolipids. The biosynthesis of these pyrimidines is well regulated. Disturbance of the biosynthetic pathway or trapping of individual pyrimidine nucleotides may lead to severe metabolic and structural alterations of cells. Synthesis, biochemical aspects and physiological role are reviewed in nine chapters. In the last two decades increasing interest in orotic acid came from several studies showing protective or therapeutic or beneficial effects of this compound in different kinds of organ injuries: various forms of hepatic insufficiency, myocardial infarction, encephalopathy, memorization pro cesses, mentioned in Chapters 8 and 9. At the end of this overview a Bibliography in an alphabetical order with 673 references may give further insight in this topic.

- Abstract
In the course of the project COST 91 •, on the Effects of Thermal Processing and Distribution on the Quality and Nutritive Value of Food, it became clear that approved methods were needed for vitamin determination in food. An expert group on vitamins met in March 1981 to set the requirements which these methods must meet. On the basis of these requirements, methods were selected for vitamin A, ~-carotene, vitamin B1 (thiamine), vitamin C and vitamin E. Unfortunately, for vitamins B2 (riboflavin), B6 and D only tentative methods could be chosen, since the methods available only partially fulfilled the require ments set by the expert group. For niacin and folic acid some references only could be given because none of the existing methods satisfied these requirements, and for vitamin B, vitamin K, pantothenic acid and 12 biotin it was not considered possible to give even references. All methods were carefully described in detail so that every laboratory worker could use them without being an expert in vitamin assay. In October 1983 an enlarged expert group on vitamins approved the compilation of methods and approached a publishing house with a view to publication. The editors wish to thank Dr Peter Zeuthen, the leader of the project COST 91, for his interest in their work, and Mr G.

- Abstract

- Abstract
The Vitamin Co-Factors of Enzyme Systems provides a systematic account of the vitamin B complex, which play a fundamental role in a variety of biochemical reactions. This book reviews the vitamin B group in terms of their significance in enzymes reactions. Organized into 11 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the processes by which the main nutrients are broken down into simpler components. This text then explores the existence in foodstuffs of substances essential for the proper functioning of the animal organism. Other chapters consider the synthetic method of producing a commercially important chemical to be displaced by a method based on its isolation from natural sources. This book discusses as well the effect of various vitamin deficiencies in human beings. The final chapter deals with the series of changes that represents the biochemical reactions that occur during the contraction of muscles. This book is a valuable resource for biochemists and clinicians.

- Abstract
The Volume brings together scholars from Azerbaijan, Egypt, Germany, India, Iran, Iraq, Italy, the Netherlands, and Turkey to approach the new field of Eco-Imagination from various philosophical and disciplinary backgrounds. Sufism and its Micro-Macro philosophy in Ikhwan al-Safa, Ibn Arabi, Suhrawardy, Nishabouri, and Mulla Sadra are in dialogue with the Logos of Life Philosophy founded by Anna-Teresa Tymieniecka (1923 – 2014). This book provides a multi-perspective insight into the understanding of Life in Islamic Philosophies. Philosophers, mystics, and poets from a variety of Islamic countries, schools, and worldviews are introduced and debated. Sustainable futures evolved in harmony with everything there is alive (Anna-Teresa Tymieniecka), are currently more threatened than ever. Wars, ecological destructivity, the climate crisis, and not least the crisis of the Human Being call urgently for a cross-religious, cultural, and generational understanding. Lively debates in Islam, taking place on philosophical problems for hundreds of years, often based on the same roots as in Occidental Phenomenology, e.g., Plato, Aristotle, and Plotinus, are still too little known in the Occident/West. The prolific and poetic arguments, introduced for the first time in an eco-imaginative horizon, do not belong to the past. This volume invites students and researchers to uncover Islamic Philosophies'potentialities for a shared sustainable future.

48. A Classified Inventory of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants Species of Indian Traditional Medicinal Systems
- Author
-
Anurudh Kumar Singh and Anurudh Kumar Singh
- Abstract
The use of biological resources as medicine has been practiced in India since time immemorial, i.e., pre-Vedic period. This has led to a rich heritage of medical wisdom and accumulation of vast knowledge about properties of the plants, which can be used for human wellness and health care. This knowledge was further enriched with adoption and integration of exotic knowledge introduced from other cultures at different times of the history. In addition, there are plants closely associated with the traditional medicinal use by various indigenous tribes and communities. The systematic documentation of this knowledge with reasoned based application and practice led to the establishment of well recognized traditional medicinal systems, and many plants under various recognized indigenous systems of medicine, such as Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy (AYUSH) (www.indianmedicine.nic.in), and use of many more plants by tribes/communities/families based on experience of generations with casual description and/or no description. These documented and non-documented information's present a repository of information on nutritional, medicinal and other economic properties/value of many plants growing in India and used under traditional medicinal systems. Considering that these are still being used, including along with modern systems of medicine, a formal inclusion of traditional herbal medicine in clinical practice will help to achieve the target of ‘health for all'.Recognizing this, the Government of India is attempting to integrate these plants and systems in education, practice, drug manufacture, through various acts, rules, and regulations for quality control and sale. However, efforts to overcome barriers like irrational use, quality control and standardization issues, high pharmacovigilance, etc., are still lagging. Therefore, adequate knowledge about the system, proper information about the drugs and high-quality clinical trials, to ascertain their scientific effectiveness are needed for promotion of traditional medicine among common people. Mainstreaming of Indian System of Medicines along with allopathic drugs and healthy lifestyle will be helpful to provide healthcare service in the best possible way to all people not only in India but around the globe. Identification and use of authenticated plant material is key to the success in furthering the use, development, and commercial exploitation of traditional formulations. Efforts till date in this regard have not created desired result/impact. Therefore, in the present book an attempt has been made to provide a consolidated filtered inventory of medicinal plant species as per their level of use, importance in trade, opportunities among undocumented, unexplored/underexplored, and new plants and threat to existence of many because of various reasons, particularly over-exploitation to facilitate conservation and sustained future use. Contents of book provides basic information on botanical identities, Sanskrit and other common names, natural geographical distribution, ethnomedicinal properties, and associated systems. This can become the foundation for further systematic scientific research on these plants, for elaborate description, characterization of essential features, evaluation, and validation of phytochemical properties to promote greater use. This shall help in bridging the gap in information about the commonly used plant species enabling generation of information as per the present requirement of patenting [Intellectual Property Rights (IPR)] and rational use following the international standards; scientifically examine the marginally used sister plant species and/or species being used without a science base and the new potential species in search for new or alternative product or drugs formulation to overcome various wellness and health concerns and diseases. The book may become reference handbook o
