This book examines the management of migratory flows in the Mediterranean within an international security perspective. The intense migratory flows registered during the year 2015 and the tragedies in the Mediterranean Sea have tested the mechanisms of the Union's immigration and asylum policies and its ability to respond to humanitarian crises. This book advances a holistic conceptualisation of maritime security, under the term ‘Blue Security', and situates it in states across the Indo-Pacific.The Indo-Pacific encompasses a vast space, incorporating two of the planet's biggest oceans, the Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean, as well as littoral and hinterland states home to half the world's population. Security challenges abound across the maritime Indo-Pacific, ranging from the risk of inter-state war at sea to so-called blue crimes, like piracy, smuggling, and illegal fishing. Climate change and marine pollution, as well as the over-exploitation of scarce and sometimes fragile resources, also pose threats to human security, sustainability, and biodiversity. In Haitian Creole, bay lodyans means to tell stories to an audience, and more generally, to entertain. This book is the first to analyze popular contemporary Haitian films, looking especially at how they respond to the needs and desires of Haitian audiences in and beyond Haiti. Produced between 2000 and 2018 and largely shot with digital cameras and sometimes cellphones, these films focus on the complexities of community, nostalgia, belonging, identity, and the emotional landscapes of exile and diaspora. They reflect sociopolitical and cultural issues related to family, language, im/migration, religion, gender, sexuality, and economic hardship. Using storytelling and other less traditionally'academic'techniques, Cécile Accilien advances Haitian epistemological frameworks. This book is a collective work published as part of a larger project titled'Mexico-Guatemala cross-border region; regional dimensions and bases for integrated development,'the purpose of which is to introduce a series of issues relative to the geopolitical dimension of Mexico's actions in Central America and its stance on conflicts in the region between 1959 and 2019.The most widely published texts up until now have been written by Mexican authors, and we have less insight into how these processes have been viewed from Central America. With that in mind, we brought together a group of specialists, each highly renowned in their own country, some of them academics and others whose accounts are worth hearing because of their participation in social and political movements that are closely bound up in this issue. The following questions guided the drafting of this book: How have Central Americans viewed Mexican policies toward their countries? What do they think of Mexico's influence in various spheres of life in the region? Has Central America's past view of Mexico as their Latin American'big brother'changed? What do they consider to be the most salient issues in relations between our countries? What were the strategic interests of Cuba and the United States in the region? Sabe-se que ainda há grande dificuldade para os alunos surdos compreenderem o conteúdo das diferentes disciplinas escolares, por estarem ainda submetidos a uma educação que exclui o surdo, por não haver metodologias adequadas e as escolas, em geral, não contarem com a Libras como língua de instrução. O presente estudo teve o objetivo de investigar como os alunos surdos compreendem a tradução de uma atividade do livro de Ciências do 3º ano do Ensino Fundamental apresentada por meio de avatar sinalizador da Libras. A pesquisa contou com a participação de 35 alunos, sendo 30 surdos do ILES de Londrina e 5 ouvintes. A análise foi dividida em duas fases. A primeira fase foi realizada com os alunos surdos e dividiu-se em duas etapas, são elas: a) apresentação do experimento do avatar; b) apresentação do vídeo do intérprete de Libras. Era esperado que os participantes seguissem as instruções dadas nos dois momentos para a realização da tarefa: a construção do foguete. Os resultados das testagens mostraram que o experimento com o avatar foi compreendido por grande parte dos estudantes surdos, que realizaram a atividade proposta pelo livro didático pelo menos de forma parcial. Enfim, espera-se que por meio desse estudo de caso seja possível contribuir para o desenvolvimento de avatares em Libras com a finalidade de proporcionar aos alunos surdos maior independência acadêmica.

Extreme weather is increasing in scale and severity as global warming worsens. While poorer communities are typically most vulnerable to the negative effects of climate change, even well-resourced communities are increasingly vulnerable as climate-related storms intensify. Yet little is known about how middle-class communities are responding to these storms and the resulting damage. In Soaking the Middle Class, sociologists Anna Rhodes and Max Besbris examine how a middle-class community recovers from a climate-related disaster and how this process fosters inequality within these kinds of places. In 2017, Hurricane Harvey dropped record-breaking rainfall in Southeast Texas resulting in more than $125 billion in direct damages. Rhodes and Besbris followed 59 flooded households in Friendswood, Texas, for two years after the storm to better understand the recovery process in a well-resourced, majority-White, middle-class suburban community. As such, Friendswood should have been highly resilient to storms like Harvey, yet Rhodes and Besbris find that the recovery process exacerbated often-invisible economic inequality between neighbors. Two years after Harvey, some households were in better financial positions than they were before the storm, while others still had incomplete repairs, were burdened with large new debts, and possessed few resources to draw on should another disaster occur. Rhodes and Besbris find that recovery policies were significant drivers of inequality, with flood insurance playing a key role in the divergent recovery outcomes within Friendswood. Households with flood insurance prior to Harvey tended to have higher incomes than those that did not. These households received high insurance payouts, enabling them to replace belongings, hire contractors, and purchase supplies. Households without coverage could apply for FEMA assistance, which offered considerably lower payouts, and for government loans, which would put them into debt. Households without coverage found themselves exhausting their financial resources, including retirement savings, to cover repairs, which put them in even more financially precarious positions than they were before the flood. The vast majority of Friendswood residents chose to repair and return to their homes after Hurricane Harvey. Even this devastating flood did not alter their plans for long-term residential stability, and the structure of recovery policies only further oriented homeowners towards returning to their homes. Prior to Harvey, many Friendswood households relied on flood damage from previous storms to judge their vulnerability and considered themselves at low risk. After Harvey, many found it difficult to assess their level of risk for future flooding. Without strong guidance from federal agencies or the local government on how to best evaluate risk, many residents ended up returning to potentially unsafe places. As climate-related disasters become more severe, Soaking the Middle Class illustrates how inequality in the United States will continue to grow if recovery policies are not fundamentally changed.
