In the past twenty years, the Hp-BMO Theory on Rn has undergone a flourishing development, which should partly give the credit to the application of some martin­ gale idea and methods. It would be valuable to exhibit some examples concerning this point. As one of the key parts of Calder6n-Zygmund's real method which first appeared in the 50's, Calder6n-Zygmund Decomposition is exactly the so-called stopping time argument in nature which already existed in the Probability Theory early in the 30's, although such a close relationship between Calder6n-Zygmund De­ composition and the stopping time argument perhaps was not realized consciously at that time. This is the first book to present a complete characterization of Stein-Tomas type Fourier restriction estimates for large classes of smooth hypersurfaces in three dimensions, including all real-analytic hypersurfaces. The range of Lebesgue spaces for which these estimates are valid is described in terms of Newton polyhedra associated to the given surface.Isroil Ikromov and Detlef Müller begin with Elias M. Stein's concept of Fourier restriction and some relations between the decay of the Fourier transform of the surface measure and Stein-Tomas type restriction estimates. Varchenko's ideas relating Fourier decay to associated Newton polyhedra are briefly explained, particularly the concept of adapted coordinates and the notion of height. It turns out that these classical tools essentially suffice already to treat the case where there exist linear adapted coordinates, and thus Ikromov and Müller concentrate on the remaining case. Here the notion of r-height is introduced, which proves to be the right new concept. They then describe decomposition techniques and related stopping time algorithms that allow to partition the given surface into various pieces, which can eventually be handled by means of oscillatory integral estimates. Different interpolation techniques are presented and used, from complex to more recent real methods by Bak and Seeger.Fourier restriction plays an important role in several fields, in particular in real and harmonic analysis, number theory, and PDEs. Along with conventional problems of statistics and probability, the - vestigation of problems occurring in what is now referred to as stochastic theory of optimal control also started in the 1940s and 1950s. One of the most advanced aspects of this theory is the theory of optimal stopping rules, the development of which was considerably stimulated by A. Wald, whose Sequential ~nal~sis'was published in 1947. In contrast to the classical methods of mathematical statistics, according to which the number of observations is fixed in advance, the methods of sequential analysis are characterized by the fact that the time at which the observations are terminated (stopping time) is random and is defined by the observer based on the data observed. A. Wald showed the advantage of sequential methods in the problem of testing (from independent obser- tions) two simple hypotheses. He proved that such methods yield on the average a smaller number of observations than any other method using fixed sample size (and the same probabilities of wrong decisions). Furth- more, Wald described a specific sequential procedure based on his sequ- tial probability ratio criterion which proved to be optimal in the class of all sequential methods. By the sequential method, as applied to the problem of testing two simple hypotheses, we mean a rule according to which the time at which the observations are terminated is prescribed as well as the terminal decision as to which of the two hypotheses is true.

Arguing for intersectionality as a reading method rather than strictly a tool of social analysis, Cindi Textor reads moments of illegibility and incoherent language in these texts as a product of the pressures on Zainichi Koreans and their literature to represent both Korean difference from and affinity with Japan. Rejecting linguistic norms and representational imperatives of identity categories, Textor instead demands that the reader grapple with the silent, absent, illegible, or unintelligible. Engaging with the incoherent, she argues, allows for a more ethical approach to texts, subjects, and communities that resist representation within existing paradigms.

Working in six collaborative teams, researchers developed new mathematical models to address questions in a range of application areas.
