This book gathers the latest advances, innovations, and applications in the field of computational engineering, as presented by leading international researchers and engineers at the 30th International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences (ICCES), held in Singapore on August 3-6, 2024. ICCES covers all aspects of applied sciences and engineering: theoretical, analytical, computational, and experimental studies and solutions of problems in the physical, chemical, biological, mechanical, electrical, and mathematical sciences. As such, the book discusses highly diverse topics, including composites; bioengineering & biomechanics; geotechnical engineering; offshore & arctic engineering; multi-scale & multi-physics fluid engineering; structural integrity & longevity; materials design & simulation; and computer modeling methods in engineering. This book is a compilation of selected papers from the 6th International Conference on Smart Monitoring, Assessment and Rehabilitation of Civil Structures (SMAR 2022). The book presents the proceedings of the 9th Asia-Pacific Workshop on Structural Health Monitoring. This book examines the Westernization Movement in modern Chinese History, in the latter 19th century and the economic impact on manufacturing and enterprise evolution. It examines the rise, development, and performance of this movement on both the micro and macro-levels. This book reveals achievements in technology transfer without political changes, which set the limits for the westernization movement. It evaluates the link between the Westernization Movement and China's economic reforms after 1978, and the factors that may have constrained the development of economic thought in China. The book provides valuable insights into how Chinese economic thought transitioned, and is a valuable contribution to the debate on how the early Westernization Movement in China caused a change in consumer thought. Structural Health Monitoring (SHM), a process of utilising on-structure or remote sensing systems and/or imaging techniques to monitor the performance of structures and evaluate their health conditions, has rapidly grown worldwide on its research and industrial practices in recent years. Recent disastrous bridge failures, such as the collapses of the Nanfang'ao tied-arch bridge in Taiwan, the Wuxi National Highway 312 overpass in China, and the Pont de Mirepoix suspension bridge in France, all in the year 2019, and the Mexico City Metro overpass collapse in 2021, have further reminded us of the importance of structural health monitoring for civil infrastructures. During the last three decades, SHM has attracted enormous research efforts around the world because it targets on monitoring structural conditions to prevent catastrophic failure and to provide quantitative data for engineers and infrastructure owners to design reliable and economical asset management plans. This book showcases the recent advancement in SHM research, especially for civil engineering applications in Australia, covering the state-of-the-art SHM technologies together with its latest developments and successful applications. The book provides a glance on the research outcomes in SHM-related areas delivered by some of the experts in Australian universities. This book is launched to mark the significant milestone of the 10th Anniversary of Australian Network of Structural Health Monitoring (ANSHM) and its contribution to the SHM research and practice over the past 12 years since its inception in 2009. The preparation of this book for an intended completion in 2020 was significantly delayed due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. This book explores Chinese novelists'distinctive contributions to the China debate in terms of the key issues of Chinese language, power dynamics and Confucian tradition. As China is rising, Chinese scholars and policymakers are debating heatedly over China's past, present and future. Who are the major debaters? How do they analyze China's problems and figure out solutions? What are the main achievements and weaknesses of the Chinese intellectual debate and discourse? Chinese novelists also get involved in the China debate. However, their voices are rarely heard. This book argues that, by dramatizing the diversities of ordinary social actors'everyday languages, active discursive practices and enchanted local traditions, Chinese novelists do not merely illustrate the dominant liberal, the New Left and the New Confucian ideologies, but enrich the China debate and provide a “novel” approach to our understanding of modern China.

For over a century, voting has been a surprisingly common political activity in China. Voting as a Rite examines China's experiments with elections from the perspective of intellectual and cultural history. Rather than arguing that such exercises were either successful or failed attempts at political democracy, the book instead focuses on a previously unasked question: how did those who participated in Chinese elections define success or failure for themselves? Answering this question reveals why Chinese elites originally became enamored of elections at the end of the nineteenth century, why critics complained about elections that featured real competition in the early twentieth century, and why elections continued to be held after the mid-twentieth century even though outcomes were predetermined by the state. While no mainland Chinese government has ever felt that its rule required validation at the ballot box, the discourses that surrounded elections reveal much about important tensions within modern Chinese political thought. What is the best means to identify talent? Can the state trust the people to act responsibly as citizens? As Joshua Hill shows, elections are vital, not peripheral, to understanding these concerns fully.

This Key Concepts pivot examines the fundamental Chinese ideas of ‘Civilization'and ‘culture', considering their extensive influence both over Chinese society and East Asian societies. The pivot analyses the traditional connotations of those two concepts and their evolution in the Sino-Western exchanges as well as their renewed interpretation and application by contemporary Chinese scholars.
