A fail-safe supply network is designed to mitigate the impact of variations and disruptions on people and corporations. This is achieved by (1) developing a network structure to mitigate the impact of disruptions that distort the network structure and (2) planning flow through the network to neutralize the effects of variations. In this monograph, we propose a framework, develop mathematical models and provide examples of fail-safe supply network design. We show that, contrary to current thinking as embodied in the supply network literature, disruption management decisions made at the strategic network design level are not independent from variation management decisions made at the operational level. Accordingly, we suggest that it is beneficial to manage disruptions and variations concurrently in supply networks. This is achieved by architecting fail-safe supply networks, which are characterized by the following elements: reliability, robustness, flexibility, structural controllability, and resilience. Organizations can use the framework presented in this monograph to manage variations and disruptions. Managers can select the best operational management strategies for their supply networks considering variations in supply and demand, and identify the best network restoration strategies including facility fortification, backup inventory, flexible production capacity, flexible inventory, and transportation route reconfiguration. The framework is generalizable to other complex engineered networks.

This book originated out of the papers presented at the special symposium,'Electrochemistry in Transition-From the 20th to the 21st Century,'scheduled by the Division of Colloid and Surface Science during the American Chemical Society meeting in Toronto. The symposium was in honor of Professor J. O'M. Bockris, who received the ACS award on'The Chemistry of Contemporary Technological Problems'(sponsored by Mobay Corporation) during this meeting and who also reached his 65th birthday in the same year. The symposium was of a multidisciplinary nature and encompassed the fields of theoretical and experimental elec­ trochemistry, surface science, spectroscopy, and electrochemical technology. The symposium also had an international flavor in that the participants represented several countries­ Australia, Belgium, Canada, Chile, England, Japan, Korea, the Netherlands, Poland, Switzer­ land, Venezuela, Yugoslavia, and the United States. The symposium was graciously sponsored by the ACS (Petroleum Research Fund and Division of Colloid and Surface Science), Alcan International, Dow Chemical Company, EG&G, Electrolyzer Corporation, Exxon, General Electric Company, IBM, Institute of Gas Technology, International Association of Hydrogen Energy, Johnson Matthey, Inc., Kerr-McGee Corporation, Medtronics, and Texas A&M University (Center for Electrochemical Systems and Hydrogen Research and the Hampton Robinson Fund). The'theme'of the papers presented at the symposium covered not only significant contributions made to electrochemistry in the twentieth century, but also'New Horizons in Electrochemistry'for the twenty-first century. Thus, the scientists who presented papers were invited to contribute chapters to this book, having the same titles as the symposium.

Schwager's work in 1866 on the car Nicobar Island pliocene foraminifera(Northern Indian Ocean) is one of the earliest detailed accounts of foraminifera and has been referred to by foraminiferal workers throughout the world.Unfortunataly,the type specimens of schwager were lost and all references to schwager's species have been based on figures and descriptions in his original monograph. The authors of this monograph have made a detailed study of the car Nicobar foraminifera after schwager.Their study has shown that most of the references to schwaager's species by later workers are not valid in the terms of modern foraminiferal classification.This monograph redescribes and reillustrates schwager's valid species for the benefit of micropalaeontologists working on the cenozoic smaller foraminifera.
