Since the turn of the last century, significant advances have been documented in the literature on the design and engineering of microgels. Specialized reviews, each covering only a specific aspect of microgel development, are available; however, works that provide a comprehensive overview of the recent status of microgel research can hardly been found. The latter is important to the field as it can offer a broad view of the current situation and the possibilities for future microgel research. The objective of this book is to fill this gap by presenting a snapshot of the latest advances in the synthesis, characterization and applications of microgels. This book consists of three sections. The first section aims at providing an overview of the latest status of microgel research. Concepts in the current understandings of microgel fabrication and characterization will be discussed. Von grundlegender Bedeutung dafür ist die Adhäsion der Mikroorganismen auf einer Oberfläche, Substratum genannt. Neben den Umgebungsbedingungen, der chemischen Zusammensetzung, Ladung oder Hydrophobizität spielt dabei auch die Mikrostruktur des Substratums eine Rolle. Die vorliegende Arbeit untersucht die Wirkung deterministisch und statistisch mikrostrukturierter Metalloberflächen auf das Wachstum, die Zusammensetzung und die Produktivität bakterieller Biofilme. Neben Pseudomonas fluorescens als Modellorganismus kam dazu Lactobacillus delbrueckii lactis für die kontinuierliche Milchsäurefermentation zum Einsatz. Weiterhin werden Durchflusszellen, die spezifisch für eine Online-Analyse der Biofilme mittels konfokaler Laser Scanning Mikroskopie konstruiert wurden, vorgestellt. Ergänzend wurden Verfahren zur strukturellen und mechanischen Untersuchung des Zellverbundes sowie der umgebenden EPS-Matrix mittels Kryo-Rasterelektronen- und Rasterkraftmikroskopie etabliert.

The concept of smart drug delivery vehicles involves designing and preparing a nanostructure (or microstructure) that can be loaded with a cargo, this can be a therapeutic drug, a contrast agent for imaging, or a nucleic acid for gene therapy. The nanocarrier serves to protect the cargo from degradation by enzymes in the body, to enhance the solubility of insoluble drugs, to extend the circulation half-life, and to enhance its penetration and accumulation at the target site. Importantly, smart nanocarriers can be designed to be responsive to a specific stimulus, so that the cargo is only released or activated when desired. In this volume we cover smart nanocarriers that respond to externally applied stimuli that usually involve application of physical energy. This physical energy can be applied from outside the body and can either cause cargo release, or can activate the nanostructure to be cytotoxic, or both.
