Written forms of Arabic composed during the era of the Ottoman Empire present an immensely fruitful linguistic topic. Extant texts display a proximity to the vernacular that cannot be encountered in any other surviving historical Arabic material, and thus provide unprecedented access to Arabic language history. This rich material remains very little explored. Traditionally, scholarship on Arabic has focussed overwhelmingly on the literature of the various Golden Ages between the 8th and 13th centuries, whereas texts from the 15th century onwards have often been viewed as corrupted and not worthy of study. The lack of interest in Ottoman Arabic culture and literacy left these sources almost completely neglected in university courses. This volume is the first linguistic work to focus exclusively on varieties of Christian, Jewish and Muslim Arabic in the Ottoman Empire of the 15th to the 20th centuries, and present Ottoman Arabic material in a didactic and easily accessible way. Split into a Handbook and a Reader section, the book provides a historical introduction to Ottoman literacy, translation studies, vernacularisation processes, language policy and linguistic pluralism. The second part contains excerpts from more than forty sources, edited and translated by a diverse network of scholars. The material presented includes a large number of yet unedited texts, such as Christian Arabic letters from the Prize Paper collections, mercantile correspondence and notebooks found in the Library of Gotha, and Garshuni texts from archives of Syriac patriarchs.

Eines der positivsten Aspekte der Corona Krise ist sicher, dass das digitale Lernen von heute auf morgen ins Zentrum der Betrachtung gerückt ist. Während der Corona-Pandemie wurden digitale Lernformate eingesetzt, um den Lernprozess der Studierenden und Schüler:innen nicht für allzu lange Zeit pausieren zu lassen. Für viele pädagogische Institutionen mag das sicher bedeutet haben, dass digitale Lernformate zum ersten Mal nicht nur als Ersatz oder als Anreicherung der traditionellen Lehre betrachtet worden sind. Nicht nur in Deutschland ist, quasi über Nacht, digitales Lernen ins Zentrum gerückt, sondern auch für Länder des globalen Südens, wie in Ägypten. In Folge der Corona-Pandemie schlossen Ägyptens Schulen und Hochschulen für Monate ab dem 15.03.2020, das hatte zur Folge, dass das Sommer- wie auch Wintersemester, online stattfinden sollte. Diese weltweit besondere Situation, dem erstmaligen digitalen Lernen der Hochschulen, führt zu der Forschungsfrage der vorliegenden Arbeit. Gefragt wird nach den lernkulturellen Herausforderungen von digitalem Lernen an Hochschulen am Beispiel von Ägypten. Angefangen soll diese Arbeit mit dem Begriff des Lernens und dem Kulturbegriff. Anschließend werden einige Forscher zur Debatte der neuen Lernkultur aufgegriffen, welches eines der Hauptbegriff der Arbeit bildet. Im weiteren Verlauf der Arbeit soll auf den elementaren Begriff Digitalisierung eingegangen werden und der Frage nach digitalem Lernen. Ist es lediglich die Digitalisierung der Präsenzlehre oder die Entstehung einer neuen Lernkultur? Danach soll dem Leser ein Einblick in das Land Ägypten gegeben werden. Anhand von vielen Daten sollen die Herausforderungen Ägyptens gezeigt werden. Es wird auf die politische Fragilität des Landes eingegangen, den zunehmenden Ressourcenmangel und die wachsende Bevölkerung Ägyptens und wirtschaftliche Herausforderungen des Landes. Mithilfe von internationalen Studien wie dem HDI Index, der Digital Readiness Studie von Cisco sowie dem Global Competitiveness Index sollen die Ergebnisse untermauert werden. Anschließend soll ein Überblick gegeben werden, welche digitalen Projekte im Bildungswesen in Ägypten bereits realisiert oder geplant wurden. Für die Erhebung der Daten wurden Experteninterviews erstellt und 5 Studierende und Expert•innen von privaten und staatlichen Hochschulen befragt.

Traders around the world use particular spoken argots, to guard commercial secrets or to cement their identity as members of a certain group. The written registers of traders, too, in correspondence and other commercial texts show significant differences from the language used in official, legal or private writing. This volume suggests a clear cross-linguistic tendency that mercantile writing displays a greater degree of language mixing, code-switching and linguistic innovations, and, by setting precedents, promote language change. This interdisciplinary volume aims to place the traders'languages within a wider sociolinguistic context. Questions addressed include: What differences can be observed between mercantile registers and those of court or legal scribes? Do the traders'texts show the early emergence of features that take longer to permeate into the'higher'varieties of the same language? Do they anticipate language change in the standard register or influence it by setting linguistic precedents? What sets traders'letters apart from private correspondence and other'low'registers? The book will also examine bilingualism, semi-bilingualism, reasons for code-switching and the choice of particular languages over others in commercial correspondence.

The majority of our evidence for language change in pre-modern times comes from the written output of scribes. The present volume deals with a variety of aspects of language change and focuses on the role of scribes. The individual articles, which treat different theoretical and empirical issues, reflect a broad cross-linguistic and cross-cultural diversity. The languages that are represented cover a broad spectrum, and the empirical data come from a wide range of sources. This book provides a wealth of new data and new perspectives on old problems, and it raises new questions about the actual mechanisms of language change.

The Cairo Genizah has preserved a vast number of medieval and post-medieval letters written in the Jewish variety of Arabic. The linguistic peculiarities of these letters provide an invaluable source for the understanding of the history of the Arabic language and the development of Arabic dialects. This work compares and contrasts various linguistic features of Judaeo-Arabic letters from different periods, and is one of the first studies to present a comprehensive linguistic investigation into non-literary Judaeo-Arabic. Its main focus is to provide an extensive diachronic linguistic description, while distinguishing between features of epistolary Arabic and vernacular phenomena.
