This book focuses on the role of popular music in the rise of populism in Europe, centring on the music-related processes of sociocultural normalisation and the increasing prevalence of populist discourses in contemporary society. In its innovative combination of approaches drawing from (ethno)musicology, sociology, and political science, as well as media and cultural studies, this book develops a culture-oriented approach to populism. Based on shared research questions, an original theoretical framework and a combination of innovative methodologies that pay attention to the specific socio-historical contexts, taking into account musical material as well as processes of reception, the five chapters in this volume offer detailed analyses of the nexus of popular music and populism in Hungary, Italy, Austria, Sweden and Germany. All of these countries have seen a marked increase in populist parties and discourses over the last years, as well as significant interactions between populism and popular music. Während sich einzelne Stimmen in der Musikpädagogik bereits seit einiger Zeit mit Fragen nach Politik und dem Politischen in der Musik auseinandersetzen, lässt sich inzwischen auch in der Politischen Bildung ein verstärktes Interesse an Musik und Sound beobachten. Bislang mangelt es allerdings an einem nachhaltigen Dialog zwischen den beiden Disziplinen. Vor diesem Hintergrund bündelt dieser Band Überlegungen zu der Frage, inwiefern sich Ansätze der Musikpädagogik, Sound Studies und der Politischen Bildung in Bezug auf den an Bedeutung gewinnenden Nexus zwischen Musik, Sound und Politik gegenseitig bereichern können.

New Orleans jazz, Dixieland, Chicago jazz, swing, bebop, cool jazz, hard bop, and free jazz: up until today, the history of jazz is told as a'tradition'consisting of fixed components including a succession of jazz styles. How did this construction of music history emerge? What were the alternative perspectives? And why did the narrative of a fixed tradition catch on? In this study, Mario Dunkel examines narratives of jazz history from the beginnings of jazz until the late 1950s. According to Dunkel, the jazz tradition is simultaneously an attempt to approach historical reality and the product of competition between different narratives and cultural myths. From the middlebrow culture of the 1920s to the New Deal, the African American civil rights movement and the role of the U.S. in the Cold War, Dunkel shows in detail how the jazz tradition, as a global narrative of the twentieth century, is intertwined with greater social and cultural developments.

Populäre Musik macht Angebote zur soziokulturellen Orientierung und Positionierung ihrer Hörer•innen. Damit verbunden sind Machtstrukturen - etwa im Verhältnis der Geschlechter, der Generationen, Ethnien oder sozialen Milieus -, die populäre Musik reproduzieren, aber auch aufbrechen kann, sodass Des- oder Neuorientierungen entstehen können. Die Beiträge dieses Bandes analysieren solche Prozesse kritisch und auf mehreren Ebenen: vom Neosexismus in Indie Rock und feministischen Gegenstrategien, über sexualisierte Afrika-Bilder und osteuropäische Hardbass-Szenen bis zum Entwurf posthumaner Welten in Videoclips. Darüber hinaus werden Leitvorstellungen der Musikpädagogik hinterfragt und Vorschläge für methodologische Neuorientierungen der wissenschaftlichen Auseinandersetzung mit populärer Musik formuliert.

In the early years of the Cold War, Western nations increasingly adopted strategies of public diplomacy involving popular music. While the diplomatic use of popular music was initially limited to such genres as jazz, the second half of the 20th century saw a growing presence of various popular genres in diplomatic contexts, including rock, pop, bluegrass, flamenco, funk, disco, and hip-hop, among others. This volume illuminates the interrelation of popular music and public diplomacy from a transnational and transdisciplinary angle. The contributions argue that, as popular music has been a crucial factor in international relations, its diplomatic use has substantially impacted the global musical landscape of the 20th and 21st centuries.

Addressing a range of music examples and texts, the fifteen essays in this volume explore the interaction between both conceptions of time and space and the intermedial relationship between words and music. This intermedial experimentation may serve to adopt the spatio-temporal attributes of the other medium or to comment on a form's own mediality. It has much to say about processes of literary and musical composition and reception, the role of tradition and intertextuality, and the medial constellation in which these works situate themselves. The articles here collected testify to the success of the first conference of the Word and Music Association Forum, founded in 2009 to offer graduate students and post-docs a forum for presenting and discussing work in word and music studies.
