A process of social, cultural, and religious change occurred in central Mexico starting in the sixteenth century, following the Spanish conquest. Missionaries from different religious orders attempted to convert the indigenous peoples of central Mexico to Catholicism, and a part of this process involved the imposition of a new ritual cycle on the existing Mesoamerican cycle that governed agriculture and the cosmic order. This study describes the evolution and modern practice of the public ritual of life, death, and resurrection in Tlayacapan, Morelos. Tlayacapan is a community located in northern Morelos that has evolved from being a traditional community of Náhuas to a center of cultural tourism based on its architectural patrimony, artisan tradition, and, particularly, its public ritual. Carnival and the Day of the Dead continue to form a part of the traditional ritual cycle, but have also been used to attract tourism. This study discusses the modern practice of carnival, Holy Week and the Day of the Dead, and the historical origins of these public rituals.

Masculinity Under Construction: Literary Re-Presentations of Black Masculinity in the African Diaspora analyzes Black male identity as constructed by Black male authors. In each chapter, Dr. Jefferson-James discusses a different'construction'or definition of masculine identity produced by men of African descent on the continent of Africa, in the Caribbean, and in North America. Combing through the works of James Baldwin, Chinua Achebe, Ralph Ellison, George Lamming, and other pan-African authors, Masculinity Under Construction argues for the importance of analyzing the historical context that contributed to the formation of Black male identity. Additionally, Dr. Jefferson-James draws a relationship between Black feminists and writers, such as Anna Julia Cooper and her contemporaries, and these works of literature viewed as primarily about Black masculinity.

Es ist vor allem Kroatiens Küstenlandschaft mit ihren über 1.000 vorgelagerten Inseln, die sich bei Reisenden seit der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts einer hohen Beliebtheit erfreut. Aber jenseits aller stereotypisierten Urlaubs- und Werbebilder, die meist auf einen schmalen Küstenstreifen in den Sommermonaten fokussieren, wohingegen das Landesinnere − vor allem Mittelkroatien − weitgehend ausgeblendet bleiben, hat das Land mit seinen gegenwärtig rund 4,2 Millionen Einwohnern seit seiner staatlichen Souveränität im Jahre 1991 ein tiefgreifender soziokultureller Wandel erfasst. In diesem Zusammenhang spielt das für die Identität Kroatiens bedeutsame materielle und immaterielle Kulturerbe, das es in seiner sowohl historischen als auch gegenwartsbezogenen Perspektive zu bewahren und kritisch reflexiv zu erforschen gilt, eine große Herausforderung dar. Das vorliegende Jahrbuch legt beredtes Zeugnis von der kroatischen Alltagskulturforschung in den letzten Jahrzehnten ab.

Die im Buch versammelten Beiträge stellen das Ergebnis eines internationalen Symposiums dar. Den Anstoß für diesen Schwerpunkt bilden zum einen die Konfliktlinien zwischen Mehr- und Minderheiten in der Staatenlandschaft Europas, zum anderen die gesellschaftlichen Umwälzungen und Migrationen, die mit einer Pluralisierung der Gesellschaft einhergehen und teilweise auch Neubewertungen von Mehr- und Minderheitenverhältnissen notwendig machen.

The book offers a critical overview of Croatian ethnology written by the most prominent Croatian ethnologist/ anthropologist in the second half of the 20th century - Dunja Rihtman-Augustin (recently deceased). She was the first Croatian ethnologist to break with the long established tradition of diffusionist (culture area) studies of her contemporaries and start to anthropologize Croatian ethnology. Violence at an aesthetic remove from the spectator or reader has been a key element of narrative and visual arts since Greek antiquity. Here Robert Appelbaum explores the nature of mimesis, aggression, the effects of antagonism and victimization and the political uses of art throughout history. He examines how violence in art is formed, contextualised and used by its audiences and readers. Bringing traditional German aesthetic and social theory to bear on the modern problem of violence in art, Appelbaum engages theorists including Kant, Schiller, Hegel, Adorno and Gadamer. The book takes the reader from Homer and Shakespeare to slasher films and performance art, showing how violence becomes at once a language, a motive, and an idea in the experience of art. It addresses the controversies head on, taking a nuanced view of the subject, understanding that art can damage as well as redeem. But it concludes by showing that violence (in the real world) is a necessary condition of art (in the world of mimetic play).
