The eighth revised edition of the Nutrient Requirements of Dairy Cattle builds on the previous editions. Over the last decade the world has experienced a growing interest in problems associated with the nonmedical use of drugs. This interest has corresponded to a real growth in the extent, diversity, and social impact of the use of alcohol and drugs in many societies. As a result, the amount of research and writing on the subject of drug problems has greatly increased, and it has become very difficult for one individual to keep up with all the relevant literature. There is thus an acute need in the field for critical reviews that assess current developments, and the present series is intended to fill this need. The series is not to be an'annual review'in the usual sense. The aim is not to cover all the work reported during the preceding year in relation to a fixed selection of topics. Rather, it is to present each year evaluative papers on topics in which enough recent progress has been made to alter the general scope in a particular area. Owing to the multidisciplinary nature of problems of drug use and dependence, the papers published in each volume will be drawn from several disciplines. However, some volumes may be devoted to one partic­ ular problem, with individual reviews and papers examining various aspects of it. The composition of the editorial board and the international advisory board reflects these objectives. The editors are members of the senior scientific staff of the Addiction Research Foundation of Ontario.

In neurosciences one may say,''All roads lead to Rome.'It seems as though wherever one starts, the course of investigation leads to the same major ques­ tions about nervous system function and dysfunction. In thinking about what to write in this preface, it occurred to me that it might be best to deal with that with which I am most familiar and to trace to some extent my own''road to Rome.''As I look over my work of the last 37 years, it becomes clear to me that it can be epitomized as a search for patterns. What usually began as a single­ minded devotion to in-depth analysis of one or a small number of variables always has led to questions of how the results might relate to the whole living unit, whether it is cell, tissue, or organism. For a number of years after my discovery in the vertebrate central nervous system of -y-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and the enzyme which forms it, L­ glutamate decarboxylase (GAD), and the identification of GABA as a major inhibitory neurotransmitter by others, I felt that my laboratory, largely bio­ chemical, was wandering in the wilderness of the complexities of the vertebrate CNS without definitively coming to terms with problems related to GABAergic transmitter functions and the roles of GABA neurons in information processing.

The picture on the following page is being reproduced here, at the request of the partici­ pants in the Advanced Research Workshop'Amino Acid Availability and Brain Function in Health and Disease'. I displayed this limewood carving, entitled'Neurochemistry', during my closing remarks to this extraordinarily stimulating and productive workshop so ably organized by my collaborator Dr. Gerald Huether. We scientists need two sturdy legs to carry us through all the twists and turns of our academic careers. We should also have, as it were, a reserve leg handy, to help us stay upright when this career ends. My'third leg'is wood carving. The idea for'Neurochemis­ try'came to me in the plane carrying me to the congress of the International Neuro­ chemical Society in Jerusalem. We need the hands for our meticulous experimental work, and at least one ear to listen to the messages our neurons send us. A few years ago it would have been premature to hold a workshop on this subject. Now, however, the time was just right to allow an overview of the status of current re­ search, and to point out the promising new openings it has created. There is no doubt that the book to be published as a result of this workshop will be, for the next years at least, the standard text on the subject. Hearty thanks to all speakers for their brilliant con­ tributions and to all participants for the lively, uninhibited and stimulating discussion.

Experimental Chemotherapy, Volume I, attempts to condense the existing knowledge in the broad field of experimental chemotherapy in a comprehensive form. The arrangement of the subject matter follows a plan by which the not always avoidable repetitive description is reduced to a minimum. In most of the protozoan and metazoan infections it appeared advantageous to discuss the different series of active compounds according to the specific diseases and their causative agents. In other cases, owing to the wide range of activity of certain antibacterials, the material is arranged according to the groups of compounds. Neuroanatomical Research Techniques discusses developments in major neuroanatomical research techniques. The book is organized into four parts. Part I deals generally with the preparation and study of brain tissue. It includes a chapter on the microscope, discussing optical magnification, limitations of microscopy, and optical contrasting methods. Other chapters summarize basic techniques for tissue preparation and sectioning; present guidelines for a number of standard, but essential, staining procedures; and present sophisticated and contemporary computer techniques that are proving to be invaluable as neuroanatomy evolves from a qualitative to a quantitative discipline. The subject matter has been arranged according to particular groups of compounds, and in a few instances according to specific diseases. The emphasis of Volume II is placed on synthetic compounds. The literature is covered up to the latter part of 1963. It is hoped that this volume will be found useful by investigators and teachers concerned with experimental work on new substances and by physicians and veterinarians who use them. The book opens with a discussion of chemotherapy with antibacterial dyestuffs. Twenty-two experienced scientists from eleven different countries have contributed four years of study and discussion to this important book, which represents part of the work done by the International Committee on Microbiological Specifications for Foods, a standing committee of the International Association of Microbiological Societies.
