El origen de esta obra se remite al Tratado de Metodología de las Ciencias Sociales editado por mi colega ya fallecido, Enrique de la Garza Toledo, y por quien esto escribe y fue publicado en su primera edición en 2012 en el marco de una coedición entre el Fondo de Cultura Económica y la Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana. Esa obra tuvo una buena acogida en el ámbito iberoamericano y, después de una reimpresión, la obra actualmente se encuentra prácticamente agotada. Después del fallecimiento de Enrique de la Garza en 2021 y tras los once años transcurridos desde su publicación me pareció que era necesario pensar no tanto en una reedición, sino en una nueva obra dotada de una perspectiva teórica aún más amplia que hiciera justicia tanto a los temas, a las corrientes y a autoras y autores no tratados en su momento, así como a los nuevos enfoques metodológicos surgidos en los últimos años. Es por esta razón que en este libro debía marcarse claramente la distinción con relación al Tratado de Metodología de las Ciencias Sociales no solamente con respecto a su amplitud y variedad, sino también con relación a su título mismo.
