The environment is prone to suffer pollution and toxic insult from generations of nanomaterials as well from accidental releases during production, transportation, and disposal operations. The NMs could interact with and cause adverse biological effects at cellular, subcellular, and molecular levels. Assessing potential environmental/ecological risks requires quality information on transport and fate of nanoparticles in the environment, exposures and vulnerabilities of organisms to the nanomaterials and standard methods for assessing toxicity for aquatic or terrestrial organisms and human health. The systematic risk characterization and evaluation of the safety of nanomaterials require a multidisciplinary approach and convergence of knowledge and efforts from researchers and experts from toxicology, biotechnology, materials science, chemistry, physics, engineering, and other branches of life sciences. Although studies are beginning to appear in the literature addressing the toxicity of various nanomaterials and their potential for exposure, at this stage definitive statements regarding the impacts of nanomaterials on human health and the environment remain sketchy requiring an increased level of precautions with regard to nanomaterials, as has happened with other emerging contaminants and technologies (e.g., biotechnology). In many parts of the world, soil and water are slightly to moderately contaminated with metals and metalloids such as Cd, Cu, Zn, Ni, Co, Cr, Pb, Si, B and As. This could be due to long-term use of phosphatic fertilizers, sewage sludge application, dust from smelters, industrial waste and bad watering practices in agricultural lands. Beside natural factors, human activities have contributed to the enormous increase in heavy metal and/or metalloid pollution in the environment. Metal and metalloid stress are major abiotic stress factors that limit crop production and reduce agricultural yield. The primary response of plants is the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) upon exposure to high levels of metals/metalloids. They either generate ROS directly through Haber-Weiss reactions or overproduction of ROS and occurrence of oxidative stress in plants could be the indirect consequence of metals/metalloids toxicity. The indirect mechanisms include their interaction with the antioxidant system, disrupting the electron transport chain or disturbing the metabolism of essential elements. One of the most deleterious effects induced by heavy metals exposure in plants is lipid peroxidation, which can directly cause biomembrane deterioration. The impact of metals/metalloids on plant water relations has to be distinguished from their effects on water availability in soils, on root growth, limiting water uptake, as well as other phytotoxic effects. If soils are high in soluble salts (including heavy metal salts), the osmotic potential in the soil solution might be lower than the potential of the cell sap in root. Under these circumstances, the soil solution would severely restrict the rate of water uptake by plants and lead to osmotic stress. Further, the negative influence metals/metalloids have on the growth and activities of soil microorganisms, may also indirectly affect the growth of plants. Advances in Environmental Research. Volume 72 begins by examining thr global and regional patterns of climate change, the sensitivity of tree growth to climatic stress, and the effects of competition, which are important considerations during oak savanna restoration. Next, the authors discuss coniferous forests, which are predominant in the colder northern regions. Boreal forest ecosystems are characterised by thick humus layers, low decomposition rates and strong limitations by nutrients. One study explores the behavioural changes in the agonistic behaviours of Herring and Lesser black-backed gulls along a rural-to-urban gradient in Liverpool and the Sefton Coast. A subsequent study evaluates the water quality in maize crop fields using the following physicochemical parameters: turbidity, potential of Hydrogen, electrical conductivity, total dissolved solids, temperature, total hardness, nitrites, nitrates, iron, soluble reactive phosphate, total chlorine and chemical oxygen demand. A hydrochemical study is carried out focusing the waters Águas de Santa Bárbara spa at São Paulo State, describing the analytical data obtained for its major constituents, trace elements and dissolved radon. Later, the authors evaluate the coating aspects to chitosan immobilization on solid matrices. An analysis is conducted in order to choose a suitable support to be studied. In addition, this compilation aims to delineate the various groundwater potential recharge sites in West Bengal. The penultimate chapter discusses natural disturbances, which are important drivers of variation in community structure and composition in most ecosystems. The concluding study presents techniques for monitoring environmental parameters in the process of rock blasting with the use of explosives in order to mitigate the dissipation of the waves in the massif according to governmental regulations.

Representatives of the family Cyprinidae in Bulgaria are studied, reviewing the available literature. 51 Cyprinid species occur in Bulgaria, most of them are freshwater and inhabiting still or running waters. One paper draws on the idea of territorial governance from recent political geography scholarships to analyze the making of water supply systems. It revisits the literature on water politics, shedding light on the interplay between the production of ecology and the construction of scale. The concluding chapter summarizes the advances in the genetic improvement of poplar for bioethanol production.
