The global population has quadrupled over the last century leading to an increased demand for affordable safe food. Satisfying this demand will not be easy and will require even more widespread use of intensive farming practices. However intensive farming practices can lead to higher probabilities of outbreaks of a variety of viral diseases, a critical concern in terms of food protection and food security. In the case of the pig industry there are several important viruses. This thesis focuses on the design and synthesis of novel one-dimensional colloidal chalcogenide hetero-nanostructures for enhancing solar energy conversion applications. Semiconducting nanomaterials are particular attractive for energy conversion due to the quantum confinement effects dictating their unique optical and electronic properties. Steering the photo-induced charge-flow based on unique bandgap alignment in semiconductor heterojunctions is critical for photo-electric/chemical conversion.The author presents the controllable preparation strategies to synthesize 1D chalcogenide hetero-nanostructures with various fine structures, further been used as excellent template materials for preparing other novel and complex hybrid architectures through a series of chemical transformations. The heterogeneous growth mechanisms of novel hetero-nanostructures is studied for developing a facile and general method to prepare more novel heterostructures. The band gap structure simulations, detailed charge carrier behaviour and unique solar energy conversion properties of the prepared hybrid nanostructures are deeply investigated. This work would open a new door to rationally designing hybrid systems for photo-induced applications.

Additionally, it considers the different scenarios in Data Science for which the imbalanced classification can create a real challenge. This book stresses the gap with standard classification tasks by reviewing the case studies and ad-hoc performance metrics that are applied in this area. It also covers the different approaches that have been traditionally applied to address the binary skewed class distribution. Specifically, it reviews cost-sensitive learning, data-level preprocessing methods and algorithm-level solutions, taking also into account those ensemble-learning solutions that embed any of the former alternatives. This tenth volume in the Advances in Criminological Theory series is dedicated to the work of Albert J. Reiss, Jr. It focuses on the relationship between crime and social organization that is so central to his work. This focus rejects a view of crime solely as the action of atomistic individuals and sees the criminal justice system as inseparable from its social, political and organizational context. This perspective has had a resurgence in recent years, and this volume brings together some of the most important scholars who have contributed to these developments. Articles examine the social organization of crime itself, the context of crime, and the response to crime. The concept of co-offending, originally developed by Reiss, is explored both as a way of improving understanding of juvenile offending and as a framework for understanding patterns of criminal organization across crime types and the relationship of criminal to licit organization. Other articles recast social disorganization theory in light of recent theoretical and empirical developments. They argue for a version of control theory that incorporates internal, contextual, and state-focused dimensions. Organizational actors, both as offenders and as governmental agencies responding to crime, are explored. DER2013-43760-R), financiado por el Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad.Este proyecto pretendía dar respuesta a los múltiples dilemas jurídicos, políticos y sociales que plantea el surgimiento, principalmente por vía jurisprudencial y a nivel internacional, en los últimos veinte años, de un cuerpo de derechos de las víctimas de graves violaciones de derechos humanos y el establecimiento paralelo de obligaciones del Estado, que incluyen la adopción de determinadas políticas públicas. La idea central que ha presidido el enfoque de la investigación desde su planteamiento es la de que todos los mecanismos jurídicos elegidos para abordar los fenómenos de violencia colectiva deben ser sometidos a un triple análisis científico en los ámbitos psicológico, sociológico y jurídico, para comprobar que producen en la víctima concreta el efecto reparador que se les atribuye, y no, en cambio, efectos distintos o incluso contrarios; que promueven en el cuerpo social al que van dirigidos los efectos de reconciliación, reconstrucción del tejido social y superación del pasado conflictivo; y que contribuyen a la construcción de un Estado democrático basado en el respeto de los derechos humanos. Todo sistema de justicia de transición debería ser pensado como el resultado de una ponderación entre los múltiples intereses individuales y colectivos en juego, y no deben perderse de vista las consecuencias que un determinado mecanismo tendrá para el ordenamiento jurídico en su conjunto y para el modelo de Estado.
