Giovanni Dorano ist ein international bekannter, wenn auch nicht unumstrittener Kant-Experte und Sprachphilosoph, der mit allen Mitteln an seiner Reputation gearbeitet hat. Aber gerade dadurch hat er eines Tages den ganzen akademischen Betrieb mit seiner Konkurrenz und seiner Eitelkeit satt. Nach einem Segelunfall ist er verschollen. Doch war es wirklich ein Unfall, oder war es Suizid oder gar ein Mord? Oder hat er sich nach Fernost abgesetzt, um dort eine neue Existenz aufzubauen? Der Roman erzählt im ersten Teil diese Geschichte aus der Perspektive seiner Frau Sophia. Er wird dadurch zur Geschichte einer Ehe, hat hier aber auch Züge eines Kriminalromans. Dann stößt bei der Durchsicht von Doranos Nachlass sein Assistent auf das Tagebuch des Philosophen, durch das die Geschichte von dessen Seite erzählt wird. Ein Roman voller überraschender Wendungen.

Es ist quasi ein Dogma der europäischen Philosophie: Bewusstsein sei reflexiv und intentional, das heißt Bewusstsein sei immer Bewusstsein von etwas. Dieses Vorurteil wird in diesem Buch mit den Erfahrungen aus der Meditationspraxis konfrontiert. Übungen des Zazen lassen eine ganz andere Bewusstseinsform entstehen: die leere, nichtreflexive Bewusstheit. Es könnte sein, dass diese als ein Urphänomen die Familie der Bewusstseinsformen zusammenhält, also Präsenzbewusstsein, Leibbewusstsein, Selbstbewusstsein, Gegenstandsbewusstsein, Zeitbewusstsein. Besonders nützlich ist das Kapitel über Bewusstseinstypen. Hier werden die Formen des europäischen Bewusstseins an charakteristischen Gestalten der Literatur plastisch vor Augen geführt, etwa an Sartres Monsieur Roquentin und an Benns Rönne. Ferner wird das literarische Erscheinen des inneren Menschen in der Bekenntnisliteratur dargestellt. Dies ist ein theoretisches Buch über Bewusstseinsformen, es erinnert jedoch immer wieder daran, dass die darin mitgeteilten Einsichten nicht ohne Übungen anzueignen sind.

Das Buch konstatiert, dass mit und nach der Postmoderne etwas Grundsätzlicheres geschehen ist als nur eine Pluralisierung der Stile, ein Wiederzulassen des Ornamentes und des historischen Zitats. Der Autor spricht von einem Neuen Humanismus in der Architektur. Anders als bei Vitruv, bei dem der Mensch das Grundmaß für die Architektur abgab und insofern dessen Geometrie bestimmte, sei der Mensch heute als Benutzer, als jemand, der sich in und in der Umgebung von Gebäuden in bestimmter Weise befindet, zum Bezugspunkt des Bauens geworden. Das eigentliche Thema der Architektur, behauptet Böhme, ist der Raum und zwar der gestimmte Raum, also die Atmosphäre. Das Buch führt umfassend in die Ästhetik der Atmosphären ein, studiert die Rolle nicht-materieller Elemente, wie Licht und Ton, in der Architektur, problematisiert die traditionelle Auffassung von Architektur als einer visual art, führt das Atmosphärenkonzept in Fallstudien durch (z.B. Stadtplanung und Kirchenbau) und widmet sich schließlich den kritischen Aspekten einer Architektur der Atmosphären: der möglichen politischen und ökonomischen Manipulation durch eine Architektur, die zum Bühnenbild gerät.

There is fast-growing awareness of the role atmospheres play in architecture. Of equal interest to contemporary architectural practice as it is to aesthetic theory, this'atmospheric turn'owes much to the work of the German philosopher Gernot Böhme. Atmospheric Architectures: The Aesthetics of Felt Spaces brings together Böhme's most seminal writings on the subject, through chapters selected from his classic books and articles, many of which have hitherto only been available in German. Aesthetic Economy is a theory of the recent development of capitalism in our national economies. Basic needs are easily satisfied and, as a result, most commodities are no longer intended for consumption, but for the staging of our lives. That is, they are used to produce atmospheres. Applications of the theory are found wherever staging is performed: in commodity aesthetics, in marketing, as well as in the sphere of production. As to technology, we find a turn from useful to joyful technology. And the technology of entertainment has become a huge part of the general economy. Similarly, a further horizon of Aesthetic Economy is to be seen in the aestheticization of politics, the staging of sporting events and the management of culture.

Interest in sensory atmospheres and architectural and urban ambiances has been growing for over 30 years. A key figure in this field is acclaimed German philosopher Gernot Böhme whose influential conception of what atmospheres are and how they function has been only partially available to the English-speaking public. This translation of key essays along with an original introduction charts the development of Gernot Böhme's philosophy of atmospheres and how it can be applied in various contexts such as scenography, commodity aesthetics, advertising, architecture, design, and art.The phenomenological analysis of atmospheres has proved very fruitful and its most important, and successful, application has been within aesthetics. Taking its numerous impacts in many fields together, it initiated a new humanism: the individual as a living person and his or her perspective are taken seriously, and this fosters the ongoing democratization of culture, in particular the possibility for everybody to participate in art and its works.

Technology has extended its reach to the humanbody, not just in a literal sense, through implants, transplants andtechnological substitutes for biological organs, but in a more figurative sensetoo. Technological infrastructure and the institutions of a technified society todaydetermine what perception is, how we communicate and what forms of humanrelationship with the natural world are possible. The original essays collected here under the general title of The Knowledge Society were first commissioned for a conference held in the late fall of 1984 at the Technische Hochschule Darmstadt, West Germany. The conference in Darmstadt saw a larger number of contribu­ tions presented than could be accommodated in this edition of the Sociol­ ogy of the Sciences Yearbook. However, all contributions were important and affected those published in this collection. We are therefore grateful to all participants of the Darmstadt conference for their presentations and for their intense, useful as well as thoughtful discussion of all papers. Those chosen for publication in the Yearbook and those undoubtedly to be published elsewhere have all benefitted considerably from our discussions in Darmstadt which also included a number of the members of the edito­ rial board of the Yearbook. In addition, we are pleased that the authors were able to read and comment further on each other's papers prior to publication. As is the case in every endeavor of this kind, we have incurred many debts and are only able to acknowledge these at this point publicly while expressing our sincere thanks and appreciation for all the intellectual sup­ port and the considerable labor invested by a number of persons in the realization of the collection.
