This book aims to present a concise introduction, for graduate students and researchers, to powerful techniques and important concepts in condensed matter physics. Key conceptual elements include the fluctuation–dissipation theorem, the theory of critical phenomena (both classical and quantum) and the renormalization group. The book focuses on the Green's functions method and the real space renormalization group (RG). The Green's function method has been used extensively to study a large variety of problems in physics. The authors present a generalized version of the Green's Function method that allows one to use perturbation theory including time dependent perturbations. This can be used to treat a variety of new fundamental problems in condensed matter, such as quantum and topological phase transitions. The real space renormalization group is a highly intuitive method to introduce main concepts in statistical mechanics and the theory of phase transitions. The book discusses the notion of scale invariance, stable and unstable fixed points, flow in parameter space, crossover and relevant and irrelevant perturbations. Probability theory is based on the notion of independence. The celebrated law of large numbers and the central limit theorem describe the asymptotics of the sum of independent variables. However, there are many models of strongly correlated random variables: for instance, the eigenvalues of random matrices or the tiles in random tilings. Classical tools of probability theory are useless to study such models. These lecture notes describe a general strategy to study the fluctuations of strongly interacting random variables. This strategy is based on the asymptotic analysis of Dyson-Schwinger (or loop) equations: the author will show how these equations are derived, how to obtain the concentration of measure estimates required to study these equations asymptotically, and how to deduce from this analysis the global fluctuations of the model. The author will apply this strategy in different settings: eigenvalues of random matrices, matrix models with one or several cuts, random tilings, and several matrices models.

This book gives a comprehensive introduction to Green's function integral equation methods (GFIEMs) for scattering problems in the field of nano-optics. First, a brief review is given of the most important theoretical foundations from electromagnetics, optics, and scattering theory, including theory of waveguides, Fresnel reflection, and scattering, extinction, and absorption cross sections. This is followed by a presentation of different types of GFIEMs of increasing complexity for one-, two-, and three-dimensional scattering problems. In GFIEMs, the electromagnetic field at any position is directly related to the field at either the inside or the surface of a scattering object placed in a reference structure. The properties of the reference structure, and radiating or periodic boundary conditions, are automatically taken care of via the choice of Green's function. This book discusses in detail how to solve the integral equations using either simple or higher-order finite-element-based methods; how to calculate the relevant Green's function for different reference structures and choices of boundary conditions; and how to calculate near-fields, optical cross sections, and the power emitted by a local source. Solution strategies for large structures are discussed based on either transfer-matrix-approaches or the conjugate gradient algorithm combined with the Fast Fourier Transform. This book presents an up-to-date formalism of non-equilibrium Green's functions covering different applications ranging from solid state physics, plasma physics, cold atoms in optical lattices up to relativistic transport and heavy ion collisions. Within the Green's function formalism, the basic sets of equations for these diverse systems are similar, and approximations developed in one field can be adapted to another field. The central object is the self-energy which includes all non-trivial aspects of the system dynamics. The focus is therefore on microscopic processes starting from elementary principles for classical gases and the complementary picture of a single quantum particle in a random potential. This provides an intuitive picture of the interaction of a particle with the medium formed by other particles, on which the Green's function is built on.

This book presents basic theory on static Green's functions in general anisotropic magnetoelectroelastic media including detailed derivations based on the complex variable method, potential method, and integral transforms. The authors study the perturbation of a shock wave in conservation laws with physical viscosity. They obtain the detailed pointwise estimates of the solutions. In particular, they show that the solution converges to a translated shock profile. The strength of the perturbation and that of the shock are assumed to be small but independent. The authors'assumptions on the viscosity matrix are general so that their results apply to the Navier-Stokes equations for the compressible fluid and the full system of magnetohydrodynamics, including the cases of multiple eigenvalues in the transversal fields, as long as the shock is classical. The authors'analysis depends on accurate construction of an approximate Green's function. The form of the ansatz for the perturbation is carefully constructed and is sufficiently tight so that the author can close the nonlinear term through Duhamel's principle.

This text presents a self-contained treatment of the physics of many-body systems from the point of view of condensed matter. The approach, quite traditionally, uses the mathematical formalism of quasiparticles and Green's functions. In particular, it covers all the important diagram techniques for normal and superconducting systems, including the zero-temperature perturbation theory and the Matsubara, Keldysh and Nambu-Gor'kov formalism, as well as an introduction to Feynman path integrals.This new edition contains an introduction to the methods of theory of one-dimensional systems (bosonization and conformal field theory) and their applications to many-body problems.Intended for graduate students in physics and related fields, the aim is not to be exhaustive, but to present enough detail to enable the student to follow the current research literature, or to apply the techniques to new problems. For modeling the transport of carriers in nanoscale devices, a Green-function formalism is the most accurate approach. Due to the complexity of the formalism, one should have a deep understanding of the underlying principles and use smart approximations and numerical methods for solving the kinetic equations at a reasonable computational time.In this book the required concepts from quantum and statistical mechanics and numerical methods for calculating Green functions are presented. The Green function is studied in detail for systems both under equilibrium and under nonequilibrium conditions. Because the formalism enables rigorous modeling of different scattering mechanisms in terms of self-energies, but an exact evaluation of self-energies for realistic systems is not possible, their approximation and inclusion in the quantum kinetic equations of the Green functions are elaborated. All the elements of the kinetic equations, which are the device Hamiltonian, contact self-energies and scattering self-energies, are examined and efficient methods for their evaluation are explained. Finally, the application of these methods to study novel electronic devices such as nanotubes, graphene, Si-nanowires and low-dimensional thermoelectric devices and photodetectors are discussed.

In this edition the second and main part of the book has been considerably expanded as to cover important applications of the formalism. In Chap.5 a section was added outlining the extensive role of the tight­ binding (or equivalently the linear combination of atomic-like orbitals) approach to many branches of solid-state physics. Some additional informa­ tion (including a table of numerical values) regarding square and cubic lattice Green's functions were incorporated. In Chap.6 the difficult subjects of superconductivity and the Kondo effect are examined by employing an appealingly simple connection to the question of the existence of a bound state in a very shallow potential well. The existence of such a bound state depends entirely on the form of the un­ perturbed density of states near the end of the spectrum: if the density of states blows up there is always at least one bound state. If the density of states approaches zero continuously, a critical depth (and/or width) of the well must be reached in order to have a bound state. The borderline case of a finite discontinuity (which is very important to superconductivity and the Kondo effect) always produces a bound state with an exponentially small binding energy.

This book is a continuation of the book Green's Functions and Transfer Functions [35] written some ten years ago. However, there is no overlap whatsoever in the contents of the two books, and this book can be used quite independently of the previous one. This series of books represents a new kind of handbook, in which are collected data on the characteristics of systems with distributed and lumped parameters. The present volume covers some two hundred problems. Essentially, this book should be considered as a desktop handbook, intended, like [35], to give rapid'on-line'access to relevant data about problems. For each problem, the book lists all the main characteristics of the solution: standardising functions, Green's functions, transfer functions or matrices, eigenfunctions and eigenvalues with their asymptotics, roots of characteristic equations, and other data. In addition to systems described by a single differential equation, this volume also includes degenerate multiconnected systems, systems for which no Green's function or matrix exists, and other special cases which are important for applications.

Quarks are the main constituents of protons and neutrons and hence are important building blocks of all the matter that surrounds us. However, quarks have the intriguing property that they never appear as isolated single particles but only in bound states. This phenomenon is called confinement and has been a central research topic of elementary particle physics for the last few decades. In order to find the mechanism that forbids the existence of free quarks many approaches and ideas are being followed, but by now it has become clear that they are not mutually exclusive but illuminate the problem from different perspectives. Two such confinement scenarios are investigated in this thesis: Firstly, the importance of Abelian field components for the low-energy regime is corroborated, thus supporting the dual superconductor picture of confinement and secondly, the influence of the Gribov horizon on non-perturbative solutions is studied.

Green's functions represent one of the classical and widely used issues in the area of differential equations. This monograph is devoted to quantum statistical mechanics. It can be regarded as a continuation of the book'Mathematical Foundations of Classical Statistical Mechanics. Continuous Systems'(Gordon & Breach SP, 1989) written together with my colleagues V. I. Gerasimenko and P. V. Malyshev. Taken together, these books give a complete pre­ sentation of the statistical mechanics of continuous systems, both quantum and classical, from the common point of view. Both books have similar contents. They deal with the investigation of states of in­ finite systems, which are described by infinite sequences of statistical operators (reduced density matrices) or Green's functions in the quantum case and by infinite sequences of distribution functions in the classical case. The equations of state and their solutions are the main object of investigation in these books. For infinite systems, the solutions of the equations of state are constructed by using the thermodynamic limit procedure, accord­ ing to which we first find a solution for a system of finitely many particles and then let the number of particles and the volume of a region tend to infinity keeping the density of particles constant. However, the style of presentation in these books is quite different.

here exists a gap in the present literature on quantum mechanics T and its application to solids. It has been difficult to find an intro­ ductory textbook which could take a student from the elementary quan­ tum mechanical ideas of the single-particle Schrodinger equations, through the formalism and new physical concepts of many-body theory, to the level where the student would be equipped to read the scientific literature and specialized books on specific topics. The present book, which I believe fills this gap, grew out of two courses which I have given for a number of years at the University of Cambridge:'Advanced Quan­ tum Mechanics,'covering the quantization of fields, representations, and creation and annihilation operators, and'Many Body Theory,'on the application of quantum field theory to solids. The first course is a final-year undergraduate physics course while the second is a joint first­ and fourth-year undergraduate math­ year postgraduate physics course ematics course. In an American context this would closely correspond to a graduate course at the masters level. In writing this book I have tried to stress the physical aspects of the mathematics preferring where possible to introduce a technique by using a simple illustrative example rather than develop a purely formal treat­ ment. In order to do this I have assumed a certain familiarity with solid­ state physics on the level of a normal undergraduate course, but the book should also be useful to those without such a background.

This book comprises some of the lecture notes I developed for various one-or two-semester courses I taught at the Colorado School of Mines. The main objective of all the courses was to introduce students to the mathematical aspects of wave theory with a focus on the solution of some specific fundamental problems. These fundamental solutions would then serve as a basis for more complex wave propagation and scattering problems. Although the courses were taught in the mathematics department, the audience was mainly not mathematicians. It consisted of gradu­ ate science and engineering majors with a varied background in both mathematics and wave theory in general. I believed it was necessary to start from fundamental principles of both advanced applied math­ ematics as well as wave theory and to develop them both in some detail. The notes reflect this type of development, and I have kept this detail in the text. I believe it essential in technical careers to see this detailed development at least once. This volume consists of five chapters. The first two on Scalar Wave Theory (Chapter 1) and Green's Functions (Chapter 2) are mainly mathematical although in Chapter 1 the wave equation is derived from fundamental physical principles. More complicated problems involving spatially and even temporally varying media are briefly introduced.

Green's Functions and Infinite Products provides a thorough introduction to the classical subjects of the construction of Green's functions for the two-dimensional Laplace equation and the infinite product representation of elementary functions. Every chapter begins with a review guide, outlining the basic concepts covered. A set of carefully designed challenging exercises is available at the end of each chapter to provide the reader with the opportunity to explore the concepts in more detail. Hints, comments, and answers to most of those exercises can be found at the end of the text. In addition, several illustrative examples are offered at the end of most sections. This text is intended for an elective graduate course or seminar within the scope of either pure or applied mathematics.

Non-Abelian gauge theories, such as quantum chromodynamics (QCD) or electroweak theory, are best studied with the aid of Green's functions that are gauge-invariant off-shell, but unlike for the photon in quantum electrodynamics, conventional graphical constructions fail. The Pinch Technique provides a systematic framework for constructing such Green's functions, and has many useful applications. Beginning with elementary one-loop examples, this book goes on to extend the method to all orders, showing that the Pinch Technique is equivalent to calculations in the background field Feynman gauge. The Pinch Technique Schwinger-Dyson equations are derived, and used to show how a dynamical gluon mass arises in QCD. Applications are given to the center vortex picture of confinement, the gauge-invariant treatment of resonant amplitudes, the definition of non-Abelian effective charges, high-temperature effects, and even supersymmetry. This book is ideal for elementary particle theorists and graduate students.

Assume that there is some analytic structure, a differential equation or a stochastic process for example, on a metric space. To describe asymptotic behaviors of analytic objects, the original metric of the space may not be the best one. Every now and then one can construct a better metric which is somehow “intrinsic” with respect to the analytic structure and under which asymptotic behaviors of the analytic objects have nice expressions. The problem is when and how one can find such a metric. In this paper, the author considers the above problem in the case of stochastic processes associated with Dirichlet forms derived from resistance forms. The author's main concerns are the following two problems: (I) When and how to find a metric which is suitable for describing asymptotic behaviors of the heat kernels associated with such processes. (II) What kind of requirement for jumps of a process is necessary to ensure good asymptotic behaviors of the heat kernels associated with such processes.

The phrase “elastically scattered” - presses the restriction that we consider such interaction processes only where the scattered wave possesses the same wavelength as the primary incident wave. In this respect, he harkens back to the days of renaissance man, when knowledge knew no boundaries, and was pursued simply for its own sake, in the spirit of enlightenment. Chemisorption is a gas-solid interface problem, involving the inter- tion of a gas atom with a solid surface via a charge-transfer process, during which a chemical bond is formed. Because of its importance in such areas as catalysis and electronic-device fabrication, the subject of chemisorption is of interest to a wide range of surfacists in physics, chemistry, materials science, as well as chemical and electronic engineering. As a result, a vast lite- ture has been created, though, despite this situation, there is a surprising scarcity of books on the subject. This work is a compilation of fundamental solutions (or Green's functions) for classical or canonical problems in elastodynamics presented with a common format and notation. These formulas describe the displacements and stresses elicited by dynamic sources in solid elastic media like full spaces, half-spaces, strata and plates in both two and three dimensions, using the three major coordinate systems (Cartesian, cylindrical and spherical), and also for transient and harmonic motions. Such formulas are useful for numerical methods and practical application to problems of wave propagation in elasticity, soil dynamics, earthquake engineering, mechanical vibration, or geophysics. These formulas were heretofore only found scattered throughout the literature. The solutions are tabulated without proof, but giving reference to appropriate modern papers and books containing full derivations. The first, second, and third editions of this book seem to occur at ten year intervals. The intent is to keep the book up-to-date. Many-body theory is a field which continually evolves in time. Journals only publish new results, conferences only invite speakers to report new phenomena, and agencies only fund scientists to do new physics. Today's physics is old hat by tomorrow. Students want to learn new material, and textbooks must be modified to keep up with the times. The early chapters in this book teach the techniques of many-body theory. They are largely unchanged in format. The later chapters apply the techniques to specific problems. The third edition increases the number of applications. New sections have been added, while old sections have been modified to include recent applications. The previous editions were set in type using pre-computer technology. No computer file existed of the prior editions. The publisher scanned the second edition and gave me a disk with the contents. This scan recorded the words accurately and scrambled the equations into unintelligible form. So I retyped the equations using LaTeX. Although tedious, it allowed me to correct the infinite numbers of typographical errors in the previous edition. The earlier typesetting methods did not permit such corrections. The entire book was edited sentence-by­ sentence. Most old sections of the book were shortened by editing sentences and paragraphs.
