Apulian limestones constitute the historic building constructions of the Puglia region (in the south of Italy) named trulli (representing an outstanding universal value for UNESCO), but also other stone buildings of the well-known Itria Valley. Trulli are drywall (mortarless) constructions made of roughly worked limestone blocks collected from neighbouring fields. The limestone for trulli is quarried from different Apulian localities and, together with another local lithotype, represents the stone heritage of the Itria Valley.This book begins with an introduction to the region of southern Italy where trulli and other typical stone architecture can be found. The Itria Valley with its towns and landscape and the town of Alberobello are described from an architectural point of view. The second section describes the different examples of building constructions in local stone of the Itria Valley, focusing on ancient and contemporary quarries. In this part petrographic and physical mechanical characteristics of the main kind of limestones are reported and discussed. The third part focuses on the main examples of stone architecture of Itria Valley, distinguishing the historical rural buildings from the other historical civil ones. In this section particular attention is given to best practices of evaluation action, protection rules and restoration methods for stone heritage in Itria Valley and Alberobello.This book serves as a useful source of information to geologists, archaeologists, architects, historians and stone industry operators specifically, and to academic and non-academic communities, travellers, and tourism industry operators in general. This book offers perspectives on how to develop a sustainable global balance of urbanization, land-use intensification, land abandonment, and multifunctional cultural landscapes. This book is the second Volume of the INPUT2020 Conference Proceedings on ‘Innovation in Urban and Regional Planning'. Heritage became a target during the Yugoslav Wars as part of ethnic cleansing and urbicide. Out of the ashes of war, pasts were remodelled, places took on new layers of meaning, and a wave of new memorialization took hold. Three decades since the fall of Vukovar and the end of the siege of Sarajevo, and more than a decade since Kosovo's Declaration of Independence, conflict has shifted from armed confrontations to battles about the past. The former Yugoslavia has been described on the one hand as a bastion of plurality and multiculturalism, and on the other, as a territory of antagonism and radical nationalisms, echoing imaginaries and narratives relevant to Europe as a whole. With Croatia having entered the EU in 2013 and the continuous political contestation in the region, wounds in the memory fabric of the former Yugoslavia have once more come to the world's attention. Thus, there is the question what will happen when the former republics are ‘reunited'once more under the EU umbrella, itself beset by increasing populisms, nationalisms, and the looming prospects of territorial fragmentation. This collection scrutinizes the role of heritage in ‘conflict-time', inquires what role the past might have in creating new identities at the local, regional, national, and supra-national levels, and investigates the dynamics of heritage as a process.

This book comprises studies that reflect on various influences of excessive tourism development in protected areas, and solutions designed and initiated to mitigate such challenges. A large proportion of tourism in Mediterranean destinations constitutes nature-based tourism, in particular, tourism in parks and protected areas. The volume “The UNESCO Memory of the World Programme: Key Aspects and Recent Developments” responds to the growing interest in the scientific study of the Memory of the World Programme (MoW) and its core concept of documentary heritage, which has received little attention from scholarship so far. This sixth publication in the Heritage Studies Series provides a first collection of differing approaches (including reflected reports, essays, research contributions, and theoretical reflections) for the study of the MoW Programme, offering a basis for follow-up activities. The volume, edited by Ray Edmondson, Lothar Jordan and Anca Claudia Prodan, brings together 21 scholars from around the globe to present aspects deemed crucial for understanding MoW, its development, relevance and potential. The aim is to encourage academic research on MoW and to enhance the understanding of its potential and place within Heritage Studies and beyond.

This book builds on case studies in depopulating and shrinking areas in Northern Europe. While most contemporary literature on shrinkage focuses on these issues from a planning standpoint, this book uniquely applies a policy perspective when approaching the material. The book assesses the potential of demographic adaptation policies to manage depopulation, that is, policy programs aiming at managing depopulation through adaptation, rather than through growth policies intended to foster population growth. In 6 chapters, the book acts as an up-to-date resource on demographic adaptation for master and Ph.D. students, researchers, and practitioners working in local and regional development, governance, and planning. Chapter 1 gives an overview of recent demographic trends in Northern Europe and introduces the theoretical differences between growth policy and adaptation policy. Chapter 2 accounts for the policy concept and introduces a framework for how local adaptation policies could be systematically analysed. Chapter 3 suggests that the Nordic welfare states exhibit two characteristics that prove to be relevant when discussing the consequences and policy implications of demographic decline, i.e. an extremely sparse population structure and an ambitious welfare assignment that in many respects has been devolved to the local level of government. Chapter 4 suggests that whether shrinkage constitutes a problem or not depends upon the interpretations of those in power, but also upon political, economic and geographic conditions Chapter 5 seeks to understand why local level policymakers avoid developing strategies for how to handle long-term population decline. Chapter 6 summarizes the points of the previous chapters, and concludes that local governments in shrinking areas ought to develop local adaptation policies. These policies, however, also need to be subjected to critical analysis, and the chapter introduces a model for how local adaptation policy priorities could be assessed in a more structured manner.

This book approaches cultural landscape as a driver for societal challenges, economic development, social inclusion, place assessment and heritage conservation. It explores issues stemming from the relation between conservation and emergencies, and identifies descriptive tools for conveying knowledge and generating new expertise, heritage skills, seismic culture and social resilience. Rechtliche Handlungsanleitungen für Südtirols autonome Kompetenzen In Ergänzung zum Sammelband'EU-Mitgliedschaft und Südtirols Autonomie'aus dem Jahr 2015 werden in diesem Sammelband die Auswirkungen des Unionsrechts auf (weitere) ausgewählte minderheitenschutzrelevante Gesetzgebungs- und Verwaltungszuständigkeiten des Landes Südtirol untersucht: die Landwirtschaft, die Jagd und Fischerei, die Arbeit, die Ämterordnung und das Personal, das Gesundheitswesen, den Schutz der Umwelt, den Verkehr, die Medien und die Kultur sowie die wissenschaftliche Forschung. Eine Darstellung der Möglichkeiten der Teilnahme Südtirols am europäischen Integrationsverbund einerseits und eine Analyse der unionalen Vorgaben für die - zur effektiven Ausübung der autonomen Zuständigkeiten besonders wichtige - Finanzautonomie andererseits runden den Blick ab. The five volume set LNCS 10960 until 10964 constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 18th International Conference on Computational Science and Its Applications, ICCSA 2018, held in Melbourne, Australia, in July 2018. Illustrated by case studies from Europe, North America and the Middle East, this book examines how non-market values can be identified, measured and incorporated into planning evaluation methodologies. The traditional means of assessing planning options, benefit-cost analysis, requires that all effects be expressed in monetary terms and this volume offers alternative approaches. It presents strategies for accomplishing the major purposes of planning evaluation - including the provision of an explicit, replicable basis for public assessment - in alternative ways. Growing demand for public involvement and for accountability in decision making requires better means for accommodating a broad range of concerns in planning evaluation. Methodologies examined include effectiveness-cost and multicriteria analysis, and the book explores how these have been applied in practice in developing special-issue plans, complex regional development strategies, and efforts to analyze the environmental justice implications of major infrastructure projects. Use of scenarios and problem structuring methods by stakeholder groups are also explored.

More and more places across the world are confronted with demographic shrinkage. This edited volume discusses how local communities in city and countryside have responded to the challenge of population decline. It is argued that formal strategies based on political and public sector decisions are only one way to deal with shrinkage. Informal adaptation strategies developed by civil society play an important role as well. To illustrate this, the book brings together a variety of theoretical perspectives, case studies and policy lessons from both urban and rural areas.

The six-volume set LNCS 10404-10409 constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 17th International Conference on Computational Science and Its Applications, ICCSA 2017, held in Trieste, Italy, in July 2017. The 313 full papers and 12 short papers included in the 6-volume proceedings set were carefully reviewed and selected from 1052 submissions. Apart from the general tracks, ICCSA 2017 included 43 international workshops in various areas of computational sciences, ranging from computational science technologies to specific areas of computational sciences, such as computer graphics and virtual reality. Furthermore, this year ICCSA 2017 hosted the XIV International Workshop On Quantum Reactive Scattering. The program also featured 3 keynote speeches and 4 tutorials.

All'evoluzione dell'autonomia finanziaria del regionalismo italiano è dedicata la prima parte di'L'autonomia tributaria delle regioni a statuto speciale e delle province autonome', volta a ripercorrerne brevemente il tormentato cammino e ad analizzare i principi fondamentali che delimitano e regolano la disciplina applicabile alle Regioni ordinarie, i cui cardini sono rintracciabili nel divieto di doppia imposizione, nei principi di territorialità e continenza, nella ripartizione delle compartecipazioni sulla base del criterio del maturato e nel principio del contenimento della spesa pubblica; quest'ultimo rappresenta un autentico “principio di sistema” sul quale si fonda l'intero disegno di riforma dei rapporti finanziari tra Stato e Regioni. Ciò che emerge descrive un'autonomia impositiva estremamente depotenziata stante la primazìa statale nella scelta dei presupposti e il ruolo portante assunto dalle risorse devolute. Il contesto di riferimento col quale le autonomie differenziate devono inderogabilmente misurarsi, si completa con uno sguardo al diritto comunitario e ai vincoli che sia l'integrazione “positiva” che quella “negativa” oppongono alle spinte centrifughe delle autonomie territoriali sul versante della potestà impositiva. In particolare, la parte seconda del presente lavoro è dedicata a tratteggiare le libertà fondamentali in materia di circolazione delle persone, dei servizi e dei capitali, al principio di non discriminazione e al divieto di aiuti di Stato, nonché alle indicazioni che il test di autonomia può offrire agli enti infra-statali per calibrare i possibili margini di intervento sia in materia di tributi propri che di agevolazioni. Inoltre, sono analizzati alcuni dei modelli giuridici comparati di autonomia finanziaria rinvenibili nelle principali esperienze europee al fine di cogliere possibili spunti di confronto con il caso italiano.

This book provides recently developed and tested methods for assessing the strengths and weaknesses of planning and policy options. Several contributions focus on new substantive areas of concern in planning evaluation, including environmental justice and sustainable urban development. Applications of evaluation in several planning contexts are demonstrated, and special problems that these pose are assessed. Several chapters address how to communicate the process and results to several stakeholder groups, and how to engage these groups in the evaluation process. Each chapter employs a real-world case in practice, thus dealing with the complexity of applying planning evaluation, and providing practical advice useful in similar situations.

The five-volume set LNCS 9786-9790 constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 16th International Conference on Computational Science and Its Applications, ICCSA 2016, held in Beijing, China, in July 2016. The 239 revised full papers and 14 short papers presented at 33 workshops were carefully reviewed and selected from 849 submissions. They are organized in five thematical tracks: computational methods, algorithms and scientific applications; high performance computing and networks; geometric modeling, graphics and visualization; advanced and emerging applications; and information systems and technologies.

This book seeks to enhance the cultural dimension of sustainable development and particularly focuses on minor historic centers and their natural and rural landscapes. In a society becoming ever more globalized, without territorial restrictions in the production of goods and able to reproduce in China the goods and product characteristic of South American crafts (to mention just two extremes), the only element that can still be contextualized is heritage identity: the result of close integration between cultural assets, intangible assets and settled communities. Thus, heritage identity is one of the few elements, together with natural resources, which has the potential for economic development that is still firmly rooted in places and local populations. These towns are often the centerpiece of urban landscapes and geographical areas with original features, not always but often as individual places within networks of minor historical centers linked by shared history, traditions and/or natural elements (rivers, forests, river systems or other natural elements). They are outside the major tourist networks, even if now there is a budding interest in the touristic exploitation of these environments. So, they are the right places to pursue a sustainable and local development with a cultural perspective. This book is a product of the VIVA_EASTPART project (Valorisation and Improving of management of Small Historic Centres in the eastern PARTnership region), under the EU-funded “ENPI Eastern Partnership” program. It complements the more practically-focused work that is in production from this group, more focused on empirical approaches to the development of minor historic centers of the nations involved. Though the book has been influenced by this research and working experience, the authors are solely responsible for the content and opinions presented.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 12th International Conference on Cooperative Design, Visualization, and Engineering, CDVE 2015, held in Mallorca, Spain, in September 2015. The 30 full papers presented together with 4 short papers were carefully reviewed and selected from numerous submissions. There is a group of papers dressing the big data related to the cooperative work. It includes the information modeling, intensive task management, how to use the cloud technology to foster the cooperation etc. To deal with the social network issues is the topic of another group of papers in this volume. They range from creating programming languages to automate cooperative processes, social network information visualization, and the ranking cooperative research teams by analyzing the social network data.

The five-volume set LNCS 9155-9159 constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 15th International Conference on Computational Science and Its Applications, ICCSA 2015, held in Banff, AB, Canada, in June 2015. The 232 revised full papers presented in 22 workshops and a general track were carefully reviewed and selected from 780 initial submissions for inclusion in this volume. They cover various areas in computational science ranging from computational science technologies to specific areas of computational science such as computational geometry and security.

The 248 revised papers presented in five tracks and 33 special sessions and workshops were carefully reviewed and selected. The 46 papers included in the five general tracks are organized in the following topical sections: computational methods, algorithms and scientific applications; high-performance computing and networks; geometric modeling, graphics and visualization; advanced and emerging applications; and information systems and technologies. The book aims to investigate methods and techniques for spatial statistical analysis suitable to model spatial information in support of decision systems. Over the last few years there has been a considerable interest in these tools and in the role they can play in spatial planning and environmental modelling.One of the earliest and most famous definition of spatial planning was “a geographical expression to the economic, social, cultural and ecological policies of society”: borrowing from this point of view, this text shows how an interdisciplinary approach is an effective way to an harmonious integration of national policies with regional and local analysis.A wide range of spatial models and techniques is, also, covered: spatial data mining, point processes analysis, nearest neighbor statistics and cluster detection, Fuzzy Regression model and local indicators of spatial association; all of these tools provide the policy-maker with a valuable support to policy development.

This book is the result of a three day workshop on'Evaluation in theory and practice in spatial planning'held in Ramsey Hall, University College London, in September 1996. Some 30 people from 8 different countries attended and 20 papers were presented. The majority of them now form the basis for this book. This occasion was the third on the topic, the two preceding having taken place in Umea in June 1992 and in Bari in 1994. Following these three meetings, we can now say that this small, industrious, international family really enjoy meeting up from time to time at each others places, in the presence of older members and new children, each one presenting his/her own recent experiences. It particularly enjoys exchanging views and arguing about the current state and the future of evaluation in spatial planning (all families have their vices...). It is also pleasing to see these experiences and discussions resulting in a book for those who could not attend and for the broader clan inthe field. Not long time ago, but ages in the accelerated academic time scale, evaluation in planning established its own role and distinct features as an instrument for helping the decision-making process. Now this role and these features are exposed to major challenges. First, the evolution of planning theory has lead to the conception of new planning paradigms, based on theories of complexity and communicative rationality.

This volume contains a selection of papers presented at the second workshop on Evaluation and Planning held at Centre International de Hautes Etudes Agronomiques Mediterraneennes (CIHEAM) in Valenzano (Bari) in November 1993. The workshop was financially and otherwise supported by the School of Engineering, Bari Polytechnic; the School of Agriculture, University of Bari; and CIHEAM. The publication of this book was made possible by to the efforts of the contributing authors. In the past half century, we have experienced two major waves of methodological development in the study of human behavior in space and time. The fIrst wave was the well known'quantitative revolution'which propelled geography from a mainly descriptive discipline to a scientifIc discipline using formalism such as probability, statistics, and a large-number of mathematical methods for analyzing spatial structures and processes under certainty and uncertainty. The second wave is the recent advancement of geographical information systems which equips geographers with automation in the storage, retrieval, analysis, and display of data. Both developments have significant impacts on geographical studies in general and solutions to real life spatio-temporal problems in particular. They have found applications in urban and regional planning, automated mapping and facilities management, transportation planning and management, as well as environmental planning and management, to name but a few examples. Both developments have one thing in common. They one way or the other use computer to process and analyze data. However, not until recently, there has been very little interaction between the two. Quantitative models have largely been developed independent of the underlying data models and structures representing the spatial phenomena or processes under study. Display of analysis results has been primitive in terms of the utilization of computer graphic technologies. Formal models, in addition to their technical difficulties, have poor capability in communication with users. Geographical information systems, on the other hand, have originally been developed with a slight intention to entertain powerful analytical models.

The topic'The Electronic City'refers to the introduction and the consequences of the new information and communication technologies for urban life. In which way can'E-Europe'for all be realised? How can the digital divide be overcome? What are the consequences for the socially disfavoured groups and how can they participate in the E-City? Is human behaviour different in virtual space? These are the questions which are part of many discourses on this topic and which are addressed in this book.

L'Ospedale Serbelloni, realizzato a metà del XIX secolo nella città di Gorgonzola, in provincia di Milano, e ancora oggi in parte utilizzato come tale, può diventare un riferimento. Questo imponente edificio, progettato da uno dei più rappresentativi architetti della cultura architettonica lombarda dell'Ottocento: Giacomo Moraglia, perdendo gradualmente la sua funzione, ha smarrito sempre più la sua identità, sino ad innescare una generale disattenzione verso il suo valore architettonico e non solo. L'edificio, di notevole complessità architettonica, è stato - quindi - analizzato a partire dalla stratificazione del territorio, che ha avuto un ruolo notevole nella progettazione, nelle sue implicazioni tipologiche, in un momento storico cruciale per la conoscenza medica e i risvolti architettonici, così come è stato indagato il percorso professionale dell'architetto che può aver determinato le scelte adottate a Gorgonzola, anche in relazione a vincoli e normative valide non solo in ambito lombardo. Sostenuto dalla comunità locale e con il contributo di autori specialisti nei vari ambiti, questo volume costituisce un tentativo di recuperare la complessità dell'edificio, dalla elaborazione progettuale sino allo stato attuale, con la speranza della sua futura valorizzazione.
