The first full-length study of one of the most controversial figures of later fourteenth century England.Robert de Vere was a close friend of the young King Richard II. He was accused of a wide range of political crimes and private vices by his opponents, the Lords Appellant. Defeated by them at the battle of Radcot Bridge in 1387, he died abroad in exile aged only 30. He was, in the eyes of many contemporaries - most notably the hostile chroniclers Walsingham and Froissart - and modern historians, a typical royal favourite: unmartial, immoral, self-seeking, and promoted and enriched far beyond what he deserved.But what was a royal favourite, and what were the accusations made against them? This book investigates these questions across late medieval England, and assesses de Vere against contemporary criteria. Based on extensive archival research, this book shows there was more to de Vere than a grasping courtier. He had been Earl of Oxford since the age of nine, heir to a large landed estate, and had twice served in foreign wars. He also made a serious attempt to govern the English lordship in Ireland given to him by Richard. The findings here show him to be a far more rounded and complex figure than previously assumed.

In 1701, Frederick I crowned himself the first King in Prussia. This title required a process of royal status construction in conjunction with other European rulers, and Frederick found his most willing partners in the English monarchy. This volume examines their ceremonial and military cooperation. Diplomatic ceremonial was the medium through which the English state and its representatives recognised the new royal rank of the Hohenzollern dynasty. In exchange, Frederick engaged in extensive military cooperation with the English in the War of the Spanish Succession. Yet English statesmen and diplomats also instrumentalised Anglo-Prussian relations for their own status production, furthering their careers and elevating their rank via the symbolic construction of Prussian royal dignity. This book investigates this reciprocal construction of status and rank, exploring the aims and actions of actors involved, and assessing the extent to which they succeeded. This volume explores in detail the molecular biology, genetics and immunology of the bacterium Helicobacter pylori that causes serious gastric diseases such as gastric cancer. The book provides in-depth insights into the mechanisms of H. pylori-induced pathogenicity, gives an overview of how the bacterium colonizes the human gut, how it manages to persist in the body and which factors play a role in the development of H. pylori-induced gastric cancer. Recent research progress identified crucial bacterial, host and environmental factors which control H. pylori-induced gastric malignancy. New studies also suggest that specific human germline mutations and other genetic aberrations have an important impact on H. pylori-induced pathology. This book provides an overview of the metabolism of dietary compounds by the intestinal microbiota, and on the consequences of such metabolic activity on host metabolism and physiological functions; both in intestinal and peripheral tissues.Over the last years, our understanding of the causal links between microbiota metabolic activity towards dietary and endogenous substrates and human health status has evolved extensively. In this context, the book starts with a comprehensive introduction devoted to the physiological and metabolic functions of the intestinal epithelium, followed by a part dedicated to the way intestine offers board and lodging for microbes being on a short- or long-term stay. The next chapters focus on the utilization of the available substrates from diet by the intestinal bacteria to produce numerous bacterial metabolites, and on the impact of such microbial activity, in the first place for communication between microbes, and for communication between microbes and lodging host. As will be detailed, this latter process of interkingdom communication leads to either beneficial or deleterious effects on intestinal physiology and metabolism. The Roman Imperial Court in the Principate and Late Antiquity examines the Roman imperial court as a social and political institution in both the Principate and Late Antiquity. By analysing these two periods, which are usually treated separately in studies of the Roman court, it considers continuities, changes, and connections in the six hundred years between the reigns of Augustus and Justinian. Thirteen case studies are presented. Some take a thematic approach, analysing specific aspects such as the appointment of jurists, the role of guard units, or stories told about the court, over several centuries. Others concentrate on specific periods, individuals, or office holders, like the role of women and generals in the fifth century AD, while paying attention to their wider historical significance. The volume concludes with a chapter placing the evolution of the Roman imperial court in comparative perspective using insights from scholarship on other Eurasian monarchical courts. It shows that the long-term transformation of the Roman imperial court did not follow a straightforward and linear course, but came about as the result of negotiation, experimentation, and adaptation.

The subject of this study is a relatively rare category of artefacts, bronze and terracotta statuettes that represent deities, human figures and animals. They were introduced in the northwestern provinces by Roman troops from the end of the 1st century BCE onwards. The statuettes have been recovered from military and non-military settlements, the surrounding landscape and, to a far lesser extent, from sanctuaries and graves. Until now, their meaning and function have seldom been analysed in relation to their find-spots. Contrary to traditional studies, they have been examined as one separate category of artefacts, which offers new insights into the distribution pattern and iconographic representation of deities. When studying a group of artefacts, a large research area or a large dataset is required, as well as dateable artefacts and find-contexts. These conditions do not apply to the Netherlands and to the majority of statuettes that are central to this study. Moreover, although the changing appearance of statuettes suggest a transformation of cults, the identities of the owners of these statuettes remain invisible to us. Therefore, the issue of Romanization is not put central here. Instead, the focus is on a specific aspect of religion, known as lived religion, within the wider subject of its transformation in the Roman period: how people used statuettes in everyday life, in the context of their houses and settlements.

Aus diesem Grund werde ich nach der Klärung der Bedeutung der literarisch genutzten griechischen Piraterie-Begriffe das zweite Kapitel der Entwicklung der ägäischen Piraterie vom Seevölkersturm bis zum Hellenismus widmen. Im daran anschließenden dritten Teil gehe ich in Hinblick auf die völkerkundliche und soziale Dimension der ägäischen Piraterie der Frage nach, warum in der antiken Historiographie ausschließlich die ägäischen Randvölker der Piraterie bezichtigt werden, nicht jedoch die Angehörigen des zivilen Griechenlands, für dessen kulturell führende Poleis die Anti-Piraterie-Kampagnen für Selbstbild und Legitimierung ihrer See-Herrschaft wichtiger sind als die Sache selbst. Eine Begründung für diese Haltung ist in der aktiven Beteiligung der zivilisatorisch fortschrittlichen Poleis beziehungsweise Angehöriger der führenden Bürgerschicht an dieser zu ersehen. Im Fazit erwarte ich nachzuweisen, dass griechische, aus den höheren Schichten stammende Söhne der Poleis Piraterie aufgrund einer beibehaltenen archaischen Kriegermentalität betrieben haben. Aus Sicht des Aristokraten Platon scheint die Frage, wer die Welt beherrscht, müßig: Mit dem Gleichnis der um einem Teich sitzenden Frösche sind die von aristokratischen Familien politisch dominierten griechischen Städte als Zentren der Zivilisation gemeint. Vom Land aus beherrschen sie das Meer, nutzen es für ihre Zwecke, ohne jedoch selbst ein Teil davon zu sein. Platon betont in seiner Allegorie den räuberischen Landanteil der Lurche, die das Wasser für ihre Bedürfnisse nutzen und sich von ihrem trockenen Standort am Rande des Teiches aus darüber als Herrscher gebärden; dabei beachtet er nicht den verletzlicheren Wasseranteil dieser Tiere, welcher bei Amphibien aller Art der entscheidende ist: Im Wasser pflanzen sie sich fort, verbringen ihr Larvenstadium als Kaulquappen ausschließlich unter der Wasseroberfläche.
