The second English-language edition of the Small Fragment Set Manual was enthusiastically received and quickly went into a second printing. In preparing a third edition, we found it necessary to revise the text extensively and partly restructure it. The reasons for this are numerous. Experience of recent years has brought technical refinements in the operative treatment of many types of small fracture. Many of these changes stem from the small-fragment-set training programs conducted in Switzerland since 1980, and also from courses and symposia that have been held in other European countries and the United States. These events were occasions for a fruitful ex­ change of experience with surgeons who were critical of our methods. As a result of this exchange, we perceived a need both to revise our indications and to give greater attention to alternative techniques. We also felt it necessary to respond to criticisms of the first two editions concerning the catalog-like instrument lists and illustrations, and the attention given to fundamental techniques. Many surgeons who work or would like to work with small implants, especially those practicing abroad, are inexperienced in operations on the larger bones. It is imperative that these colleagues be given a basic introduction to the'biomechanical thinking'of the Swiss Association for the Study of Internal Fixation (ASIF).

It is remarkable that Dr. Ogden has created a third edition of Skeletal Injury in the Child. It seems just a short time since the publication of the?rst (1982) and second (1990) editions. The previous texts have been so comprehensive that it is dif?cult to imagine he could add more information to the existing chapters and create additional new chapters. One of the new chapters concerns the multiply-injured child, who presents an increasing problem in management. More children are surviving because of modern methods of emergency transportation and resuscitation. As a con- quence, a signi?cant number with extensive head and thoracoabdominal injuries are presenting to the emergency room, posing dif?cult problems in the coor- nation of care and timing of selective aspects of management. Survival rates are improving. Most of these children have concomitant musculoskeletal injury, which must be effectively treated because of the survival potential. There is a new chapter on abnormal healing and growth plate disruption, with particular emphasis on bony bridge resection. Our ability to recognize epiphyseal bars has greatly improved. Now, we can better anticipate and recognize growth arrest before it becomes extensive. Dr. Ogden has provided many helpful sugg- tions on how best to document and approach these physeal injury complications.

Multiple Equilibria in Proteins covers the multiple interactions between small ions and molecules and a protein molecule. The book also deals with the physicochemical mechanisms of this interaction and the information about protein structure and the forces stabilizing that structure. The text discusses the mathematical description of complex formation, the thermodynamic analysis of binding data, and various theoretical models which can be used to describe the phenomena of small molecule-macromolecule interactions. The measurement of complex formation; the binding of neutral molecules; and hydrogen-ion equilibria are also considered. The book further tackles metal-ion binding; the binding of organic ions by proteins; as well as protein-protein interaction. Chemists and biochemists will find the book useful.
