The introduction of writing enables new forms of literature, but these can be invisible in works that survive as manuscripts. Through looking at inscriptions of poetry on garbage and as graffiti, we can glimpse how literature spread along with writing. This study uses these lesser-studied sources, including inscriptions on pottery, architecture, and especially wooden tablets known as mokkan, to uncover how poetry, and literature more broadly, was used, shared and thrown away in early Japan. Through looking at these disposable and informal sources, we explore the development of early Japanese literature, and even propose parallels to similar developments in other societies across space and time.

An analysis of the trauma of the hidden children and his long-term repercussion.This book is made up of two distinct sections, which are integrally connected. The author's intent is not only to present and identify the trauma of Jewish children hidden under the Nazi Occupation, but also to analyse its short- and long-term repercussions.To achieve this, Marcel Frydman uses two complementary approaches. The first section is an autobiographical study evoking the experience and conditions in which most Jewish children and adolescents lived during the time of the Occupation - presented from the psychologist's point of view. The idea of'world literature'has served as a crucial though underappreciated interlocutor for African diasporic writers, informing their involvement in processes of circulation, translation, and revision that have been identified as the hallmarks of the contemporary era of world literature. Yet in spite of their participation in world systems before and after European hegemony, Africa and the African diaspora have been excluded from the networks and archives of world literature. In Sounding the Break, Jason Frydman attempts to redress this exclusion by drawing on historiography, ethnography, and archival sources to show how writers such as W. E. B. Du Bois, Zora Neale Hurston, Alejo Carpentier, Derek Walcott, Maryse Condé, and Toni Morrison have complicated both Eurocentric and Afrocentric categories of literary and cultural production. Through their engagement with and revision of the European world literature discourse, he contends, these writers conjure a deep history of'literary traffic'whose expressions are always already cosmopolitan, embedded in the long histories of cultural and economic exchange between Africa, Asia, and Europe. It is precisely the New World American location of these writers, Frydman concludes, that makes possible this revisionary perspective on the idea of (Old) World literature.

This conference, dedicated to the etiology and treatment of motility disor­ ders in spermatozoa and male sterility, attracted some of the finest investiga­ tors in the field. Standards were immensely high throughout, and discussions were meaningful and detailed. Analyses on disorders in sperm motility de­ mand a broad-based approach, involving cytologists, geneticists, andrologists, and embryologists, because the topic has many clinical and scientific over­ tones. Human spermatozoa are at the mercy of so many factors as they form and mature in the testis and epididymis. Their survival and fundamental char­ acteristics are essential for fertilization, and the male genome imposes its influence on the embryo as it becomes active in male pronuclei very soon after sperm entry into the oocyte. All of these fundamental aspects of sperm biology demanded a broad breadth of topics in the symposium. The opening session quickly got down to fundamentals with contributions from J.-L. Gatti, J.G. Alvarez, C. Gagnon, and H. Breitbart. They discussed the mechanism and regulation of motility, the metabolic strategy of human spermatozoa, the effects of exogenous fac­ tors such as antibodies, infections, and toxins, and finally the role of intracel­ lular calcium on sperm motility. To these topics, the postcoffee session on the first morning described the genetics of motility disorders and the etiology and management of necrozoospermia. The excellent presentation provided the background detail of the symposium and opened the way for the discus­ sion of various clinical aspects of the topic.

A dynamic social history of shadow capitalism spanning the late nineteenth and twentieth centuriesObservers see free markets, the relentless pursuit of profit, and the unremitting drive to commodify everything as capitalism's defining characteristics. These most visible economic features, however, obscure a range of other less evident, often unmeasured activities that occur on the margins and in the concealed corners of the formal economy. The range of practices in this large and diverse hidden realm encompasses traders in recycled materials and the architects of junk bonds and shadow banking. It includes the black and semi-licit markets that allow wealthy elites to avoid taxes and the unmeasured domestic and emotional labor of homemakers and home care workers. By some estimates, the unmeasured economic activity that occurs within the household, informal market, and underground economy amounts to a substantial portion of all economic activity in the world, as much as 30 percent in some countries.Capitalism's Hidden Worlds sheds new light on this shadowy economic landscape by reexamining how we think about the market. In Eastern Europe privatization is now a mass phenomenon. Children and adults with developmental disabilities are at increased risk for experiencing behavioral problems and psychiatric comorbidities compared to the general population and several neurodevelopmental disorders are associated with certain neuropsychiatric conditions. Because of language and cognitive differences, the clinical presentation of these conditions can differ from what is seen in the general population. Furthermore, research on treatment approaches for psychiatric comorbidities in these populations is extremely limited and evidence-based treatment guidelines do not exist. This book is a collection of neurodevelopmental disorders that are frequently associated with relatively distinct and common psychiatric co-morbidities across the lifespan. Each chapter addresses a different neurodevelopmental disorder by providing an overview, symptoms of common psychiatric co-morbidities, assessment strategies, psychosocial and biological treatments, and common medical co-morbidities the clinician needs to have basic knowledge of with regards to choosing safe and appropriate pharmacotherapy. Given how relatively rare many of these syndromes are, the practicing clinician generally does not encounter a sufficient number of cases during training or clinical practice to develop comfort and expertise in each of them. Furthermore, there are no easy to access evidence-based treatment guidelines. This succinct and practical resource fills a needed gap for an overview of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders in a single resource with a clinical expert's approach to diagnosis and management.

This book shines a much-needed light on one of the key elements of France's new literary age: that being the production of'pornography'of all kinds. H.G. Cocks reveals how publishers and writers, both mainstream and clandestine, tried to cash in on the vogue for erotic literature which surfaced at the time. Though the vast majority of what was produced was no more than risqué or saucy, Cocks shows that this was seen as far more dangerous than frank sexual imagery, as it was mostly legal and within the range of the ordinary reader.
