- Abstract
A cutting-edge collection of work on the influence and application of new technologies on the study and practice of language and translation. This book analyzes the relationship between technology, language, and translation in the digital age. Language issues covered include an automatic football commentary system, the use of digital humanities in the versification of Classical Chinese poetry, the application of corpus linguistics in identity construction in Hong Kong, Cantonese speech recognition, and the use of AI in a Chabot system. Other chapters look at translation matters, such as technologies for interpreting, neural machine translation for press releases, computer-aided annotation for translator and interpreter training, and artificial intelligence and translation. As language and translation are closely intertwined, together, these chapters illustrate the drastic changes that technology has brought to these combined areas. A vital resource for scholars and students studying the impact of technology on language and translation.

- Abstract
The Routledge Handbook of the History of Translation Studies is an exploration of the history of translation and interpreting studies (TIS) as a field of intellectual enquiry. The volume covers the evolution of thinking on translation, from the earliest discourses in Assyria, Egypt, Israel, China, India, Greece, and Rome, up to the early 20th century when TIS emerged as an identifiable academic field. The volume also traces the institutionalization of TIS and its key concepts from their beginnings in the 1920s in Ukraine up to their contemporary interdisciplinary manifestations. Written by leading international scholars, many of whom played a direct role in the events they describe, the chapters in this volume provide a comprehensive and in-depth account of the birth and consolidation of translation and interpreting studies as a thriving interdiscipline. With a focus on providing readers with the methodological and theoretical tools they need to conduct research, as well as background in the historiography of TIS, this handbook is an indispensable resource for all students and researchers of translation and interpreting studies.

- Abstract
This is the first account in English of how Islamic religious orders dating back to Ottoman times have risen to dominate and define the future of Turkey, Europe's awkward neighbor and the major power in the Eastern Mediterranean. Given its determined program of secularizing the people both under and after the Ataturk regime, Turkey is often projected as a model for the compatibility of Islam with parliamentary democracy. In this absorbing book, journalist and writer David S. Tonge reveals the limitations of that secularization, and its progressive reversal, in what continues to be a profoundly religious country. He describes how Muslim Turks'religious identity has been taken over by branches of one of Islam's great religious orders, the Naqshbandis, whose profoundly anti-Western ethos was honed by British and French colonial incursions into the heartland of their faith. Tonge's history offers a salutary alternative to the wishful narrative developed by Western chancelleries during the Cold War, one which viewed Turkey as a westernizing democracy. The revival of both Turkish nationalism and Islam helped President Erdogan's rise to power, and will shape the regime that succeeds him--illuminating and understanding Turkey's realities of faith and religious politics has never been more important.

- Abstract
The contributions to this volume represent a range of case studies that provide perspectives on the question of how deeply Hellenic influence penetrated into the lives of the subjects of the Hellenistic monarchies. Greek became the language of international discourse of the ruling elites in the kingdoms formed after the conquests of Alexander. But to what extent were the institutions and practices of these monarchies shaped by ideologies brought by Greek-speaking rulers? To what extent did the customs of the complex cultures they ruled over shape the practices of the ruling elites, conserving ancient institutions in traditional ways?

- Abstract
This book delves into the narrative of Fethullah Gülen and his movement, which essentially encapsulates the broader story of Turkey. The book explores the origins of this movement that undeniably left an unprecedented impact on Turkey, surpassing the influence of any preceding religious movement. This movement, centered around the figure of Gülen, born in 1938, gained prominence mainly during the 1990s when it unfurled its banner of inter-religious tolerance. Gülen actively advocated for the establishment of a global network of schools and even universities, aiming to cultivate a new generation of devout Muslims who were educated and inclined towards Western ideals. By the late 1990s, Gülen's health issues led him to relocate to the United States, ostensibly. With the ascent of the AKP party to power, connections burgeoned between the movement's members and the party, particularly its leader Erdoğan. This mutually beneficial relationship faced turbulence at the onset of the second decade of the 2000s, culminating in the attempted religious coup in 2016, during which Gülen and his movement were accused. Subsequently, Gülen emerged as the foremost adversary of Turkey, rendering his return to the country implausible. This book illuminates the intricacies of the Gülenist movement and endeavors to unravel the persona of its leader. The text delves into the origins of the Gülenist movement, its underlying ideology, and its enduring significance within Turkey. By employing comprehensive research techniques and utilizing archival materials in various languages Dr. Aviv provides insight in an objective as possible way into the dynamic interplay between religion and state in Turkey, as well as the ascent and decline of religious movements within the nation.

- Abstract
This book explores the significance of Turkey's Blue Homeland (Mavi Vatan) naval concept, which defines its maritime rights and interests in the surrounding seas – Aegean Sea, Black Sea, and the Mediterranean. The concept has a powerful socialized definition and a popular appeal across the political spectrum in Turkey with important implications for security in the wider Middle East. The book investigates the impact of geopolitics and domestic-political factors on the concept and uncovers motivations behind its trajectory since 2004 with a particular focus on the last several years, the period when Turkey's naval assertiveness reached its peak following the failed coup attempt in 2016. Based on in-depth interviews with diplomats, naval officers, academics, and researchers in the field, the book takes the reader through a journey on how the Turkish government has reinforced an activist policy since 2016 due to pressures of regional insecurity, domestic coalition logrolling, and nationalist sentiment.

- Abstract
Grounded in anthropological comparison and the concept of materiality, this book offers an in-depth ethnographic study of the similarities and differences among various forms of religious practices in a Pentecostal Church (Christ Embassy) and an Islamic group (NASFAT) in the Nigerian capital of Abuja. Scholarship in this area tends to focus on inter-religious contestations and conflicts; however, this book proposes that another dynamic is unfolding between Christians and Muslims that is characterised by conviviality, interfaith joint action programmes, mutual influences and even the exchange of religious forms. The comparative approach reveals that, notwithstanding the seemingly opposed worldviews and divergences between Muslims and Christians, they all face similar challenges and apply similar techniques for meeting the challenges posed by the precarious Nigerian urban environment. It is through practices – especially those conducted in (semi-) public settings – that people from different religious persuasions define, encroach on and feel the weight of each other's presence.

- Abstract
This book argues that, as a popular text, Valley of the Wolves: Ambush functions as a site for consent production for foreign policies formed by the AKP within the last decade, through a process of reproduction of state identities, ideologies, and discourses at the level of narrative. This book positions its argument in two fields: Turkish Foreign Policy (TFP) studies and Popular Culture and World Politics within the larger International Relations context. It is interdisciplinary in nature as it also make use of theories around popular culture. It advances works within these fields by focusing on a particular national context and offer an original analysis on Turkey. While doing so, it employs discourse analysis. It also teases out some of the complexities of the nature and implications of representation of the TFP by using critical reception. Together with an analysis of the critical reception of the television series, political discourses around foreign policy are examined in line with the ways in which these policies are depicted and reproduced by the series. This leads to an intertextual reading of Turkish state identity and security imaginary and a critical examination of the TFP in the last decade from a Constructivist perspective.

Charles Dickens and Orhan Kemal are prominent authors, the works of whom reveal the historical and ideological background of their respective contexts. This book extensively accounts for history and Althusser's ideology in Charles Dickens's and Orhan Kemal's selected novels.

This book focuses on the changing role of Türkiye in today's world. Once considered to be merely a middle power, soaring activism of Türkiye in current international affairs speaks to the reality altering new positioning of the country. Türkiye has moved away from being the react-or that it was during the last century to a new place in the millennial age as an act-or. The author argues that today's Türkiye, both part of the West and the East, is a deal broker, game changer, mediator, facilitator and more. This book sheds light to the evidence depicting Türkiye's new status by providing examples from recent history.

- Abstract

- Abstract
Interdisciplinarity is significant in the age of globalization and digitalization. It creates new opportunities through comparison and analysis of different findings and methods. Furthermore, it expands the boundaries of each discipline: each topic or phenomenon can be viewed under a whole new light. Instead of conventional or traditional methods, interdisciplinary cooperation can lead to innovative approaches that can contribute to the value of each discipline involved. It also requires respect and recognition between disciplines: their independent positions could be questioned or justified based on their interrelationship. Moreover, interdisciplinary work brings together diverse experts who cooperate and share their findings with each other. In this sense, interdisciplinarity can be seen as a dialogue between disciplines. In this complex interaction, a'third'field may emerge that transcends the boundaries of each independent discipline. Since relatively young Translation Studies has long been influenced by other disciplines, its boundaries could be defined through interdisciplinarity. In this book, numerous translation scholars engage with the relationship between translation and other disciplines. Translation here is not only to be understood as a transmission of texts, but in a broader sense, as denoting a transformation of different phenomena that could be studied both as a product and as a process.

- Abstract
This is the first complete study of the relationship between Retranslation and Reception. Although many translation scholars have cited Reception Theory in their work, this is the first systematic study of its relationship to Retranslation. The book starts from the hypothesis that frequent retranslations of the same literary text into the same language may be indicative of its impact in the target culture. The volume encompasses both theory and practical analysis of Retranslation and Reception as mutually dependent concepts. The sixteen chapters relate the translations analysed to their socio-historical contexts in order to assess the impact that they have had on the target culture in terms of the reception of the authors studied, and also explore the relationship that may exist between the appearance of new translations and historical, social or cultural changes.

- Abstract
Digital communication is significantly expanding new opportunities and challenges in the tourism industry. Tourists, now more frequently than ever, bring their smartphones with them to every destination, and cultural tourists are particularly motivated to utilize a variety of services and platforms as they are especially open and interested in understanding in detail the places and heritage of the places they visit. Thus, researchers, educators, and professionals in the tourism and hospitality field should take advantage of this opportunity to propose new ways of presenting better content and creating a more immersive and optimized experience for tourists. The Handbook of Research on Digital Communications, Internet of Things, and the Future of Cultural Tourism shares research and experiences on the convergence between digital communication and cultural tourism, specifically the migration and creative appropriation of these technologies for increased tourist engagement and their role in destination marketing and strategic planning and decision making. Covering topics such as big data, e-tourism, and social media platforms, this major reference work is an invaluable resource for researchers, students, professors, academicians, government entities, museum managers, professionals, and cultural tourism managers and facilitators.

- Abstract
Understanding associations in the Greco-Roman world enhances the study of the rise of early Christianity--whether at the micro-level of interpreting particular texts or at the macro-level of assessing the spread of Christ-devotion in the pre-Constantinian era. The twenty-four contributions contained within Greco-Roman Associations, Deities, and Early Christianity enlarge our perspectives on the extent to which Greco-Roman associations bring features of Christian origins into relief.Thematic studies include associational social reputation; women in associations; deities and devotion; financial strategies of group maintenance; care for the poor; varieties of group identity; refinements of terminological and conceptual apparatus; funerary practices; occupational groups; and the alleged role of Christianity in the demise of associations. Studies of particular phenomena include 1 Thessalonians, 1 Corinthians, Paul's Collection, Hebrews, a late first-century Christian family, 1 Clement, and Clement of Alexandria. While the essays cover a wide spectrum of topics, they retain a clear focus on aspects of corporate life within ancient associations as comparanda for the study of early Christ-groups within their social milieu. These essays, all kept to a disciplined length, represent the work of impressive scholars from a range of interdisciplinary, intergenerational, and international contexts. The volume's symposium of voices and lively scholarly exchange productively expand current conversations about Greco-Roman associations, deities, and early Christianity.

- Abstract
This is the first book of its kind about the Turkish Muslim scholar, Fethullah Gülen, since the July 2016 events in Turkey, the trauma experienced by Gülen, and the disruption to initiatives inspired by his teaching, known as Hizmet. Drawing on primary interviews with Gülen and Hizmet participants and a literature review, this Open Access book locates the clear origins of Gülen's teaching in the Qur'an and Sunnah in dynamic engagement with their geographical, temporal and existential reception, translation, and onward communication. It argues that as Hizmet cannot be understood apart from Gülen and his teaching, Gülen and his teaching cannot be understood apart from Hizmet, while exploring the heritage of both. A more geographically focused case study is set out in author Paul Weller's Hizmet in Transitions: European Developments of a Turkish Muslim-Inspired Movement, also published by Palgrave Macmillan (2022).

- Abstract

50. Charted and Uncharted Territories in Translation and Interpreting Research Methods

- Abstract
When different research studies have improved the field of translation and interpreting, scholars have been searching for novel and fresh approaches, methods, and protocols to collect updated insights on a broad range of research hypotheses and questions. Different data collection approaches are extracted from various sources for elucidating particular phenomena of interest and generalising findings and results to larger parent populations. In this direction, the science of statistics and the science of quantitative and qualitative approaches procure different and cutting-edge tools, methods, and skills which can be employed to analyse the escalation of data. With this idea, researchers and investigators apply these tools to identify patterns, distinguish differences and similarities, and initiate updated research hypotheses and questions in several areas of study. The application of quantitative data has left researchers and scholars, regardless of the indispensable understructure, to peruse, interpret, and employ various statistics in their research studies. Translation and Interpreting (T/I) Studies are not exceptions. Outdated translation and interpreting curricula based on the comparative literature programs were neglected or, in a better sense, were unable to incorporate different quantitative and empirical research methods and mainly concentrated on the qualitative aspects of research. With the above context, the systematic reverberation of various quantitative research methods has primarily been restricted to different types of mathematical and statistical analyses required for particular research studies. For instance, discipline-specific research methods frequently elucidate and mention different quantitative approaches; however, they remain silent on mathematical and statistical approaches. Using statistical tests and their applications within various research studies requires minimum knowledge of statistics and mathematics. While discipline-specific research methods provide a substructure of quantitative research methods, they do not determine the challenges inherent to translation and interpreting research studies, nor do they prepare an exhaustive outline to inspect and assess their particularities. This book endeavours to explain research issues and topics theoretically and practically to provide an appropriate situation for T/I students to get familiar with different quantitative and qualitative approaches. It tries to present them in simple language.
