During the last three decades geosciences and geo-engineering were influenced by two essential scenarios: First, the technological progress has changed completely the observational and measurement techniques. Second, there is a growing public concern about the future of our planet, its climate, its environment and about an expected shortage of natural resources. Obviously, both aspects, viz. efficient strategies of protection against threats of a changing Earth and the exceptional situation of getting terrestrial, airborne as well as space borne data of better and better quality explain the strong need of new mathematical structures, tools and methods. Epstein Barr virus (EBV) was discovered as the first human tumor virus around 50 years ago. Since its discovery in Burkitt's lymphoma it has been associated with various other malignancies, infectious mononucleosis and even autoimmune diseases. The two book volumes on EBV summarize the first 50 years of research on this tumor virus, starting with historical perspectives on discovery, oncogenicity and immune control, reviewing the role that the virus plays in the various associated diseases and concluding with a discussion on how the immune system keeps persistent EBV infection under control in healthy EBV carriers and can be used to treat EBV associated diseases. The respective 32 chapters are written by international experts from three continents for health care providers, biomedical researchers and patients that are affected by EBV. This book provides an overview of recent developments in experiments probing the fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states of the second Landau level, especially the \nu=5/2 state. It summarizes the state-of-the-art understanding of these FQH states. It furthermore describes how the properties of the FQH states can be probed experimentally, by investigating tunneling and confinement properties. The progress towards the realization of an experiment, allowing to probe the potentially non-Abelian statistics of the quasiparticle excitations at \nu=5/2 is discussed. The experimental part of this book gives practical advice for solving the experimental challenges which researchers studying highly fragile FQH states are faced with.

This book gives a comprehensive presentation of our present understanding of the Earth's Hydrological cycle and the problems, consequences and impacts that go with this topic. Water is a central component in the Earth's system. It is indispensable for life on Earth in its present form and influences virtually every aspect of our planet's life support system. On relatively short time scales, atmospheric water vapor interacts with the atmospheric circulation and is crucial in forming the Earth's climate zones. Water vapor is the most powerful of the greenhouse gases and serves to enhance the tropospheric temperature. The dominant part of available water on Earth resides in the oceans. Parts are locked up in the land ice on Greenland and Antarctica and a smaller part is estimated to exist as groundwater. If all the ice over the land and all the glaciers were to melt, the sea level would rise by some 80 m. In comparison, the total amount of water vapor in the atmosphere is small; it amounts to ~ 25 kg/m2, or the equivalent of 25 mm water for each column of air. Yet atmospheric water vapor is crucial for the Earth's energy balance. The book presents a comprehensive survey of the thermoballistic approach to charge carrier transport in semiconductors. This semi-classical approach, which the authors have developed over the past decade, bridges the gap between the opposing drift-diffusion and ballistic models of carrier transport. While incorporating basic features of the latter two models, the physical concept underlying the thermoballistic approach constitutes a novel, unifying scheme. It is based on the introduction of'ballistic configurations'arising from a random partitioning of the length of a semiconducting sample into ballistic transport intervals. Stochastic averaging of the ballistic carrier currents over the ballistic configurations results in a position-dependent thermoballistic current, which is the key element of the thermoballistic concept and forms the point of departure for the calculation of all relevant transport properties. In the book, the thermoballistic concept and its implementation are developed in great detail and specific examples of interest to current research in semiconductor physics and spintronics are worked out.

Significant advances in the scientific use of space based data were achieved in three joint interdisciplinary projects based on data of the satellite missions CHAMP, GRACE and GOCE within the R&D program GEOTECHNOLOGIEN. It was possible to explore and monitor changes related to the Earth's surface, the boundary layer between atmosphere and solid earth, and the oceans and ice shields. This boundary layer is our habitat and therefore is in the focus of our interests. The Earth's surface is subject to anthropogenetic changes, to changes driven by the Sun, Moon and planets, and by changes caused by processes in the Earth system. The state parameters and their changes are best monitored from space. Underlying these functions are inter- and intra-molecular interactions that depend on the molecular characteristics of dextran (molecular weight, architecture, chemical modifications) and the type of solvent used (typically water, but may include salts, solutes and/or organic solvents). In many countries, the traditional sources of socioeconomic development, such as low labor costs, availability of inexpensive raw materials, and favorable geographic location are waning. These economies are searching for new sources of competitive advantage that will allow for maintaining growth, among other things by boosting participation in international trade.The book explores non-traditional drivers of competitiveness in both theory and practice. First, chapters 1 through 4 present theoretical and methodological aspects of the relationships among international trade, human capital and innovation. Damit spricht es einen breiten Personenkreis aus der Geographie, dem Vermessungswesen, den angewandten Geowissenschaften und auch aus den Informationswissenschaften an, der sich ein Bild vom aktuellen Wissensstand der Geoinformatik machen will. Der Bogen der behandelten Themen spannt sich vom Modellieren von Geo-Objekten im Raum bis zu ihrer Schematisierung in Datenbanken vor dem Hintergrund typischer GIS-Applikationen.

Im Handbuch der Haut- und Geschlechtskrankheiten von J. JADASSOHN wurden die Erbkrankheiten der Haut von H. W. SIEMENS abgehandelt. Seit 1929 ist die Literatur auf diesem Gebiet gewaltig angewachsen, jedoch im deutschen Schrifttum nie mehr zusammenfassend dargestellt worden. Bei Planung des Gesamtwerkes war zunächst vorgesehen, die Erbkrankheiten in einem Beitrag von etwa 28 Seiten abzuhandeln. Der um die Erblichkeitspathologie verdiente H. W. SIEMENS hatte sich bereit erklärt, diesen unter der Voraussetzung zu über­ nehmen, daß es gelänge, einen Mitarbeiter zu finden, der in der Lage wäre, das gewaltige, vornehmlich durch amerikanische Forschungsergebnisse angewachsene Wissen zu übersehen und zu bearbeiten. Da dies mißlang, wurde-gerade auch im Hinblick auf die großen Fortschritte des Wissens um die Erblichkeits­ forschungen in der Dermatologie - von A. MARCHIONINI und H. A. GoTTRON im Jahre 1962 beschlossen, einen ganzen Band der Erblichkeitsforschung zu widmen und U. W. ScHNYDER als Mitherausgeber heranzuziehen. War es vor 35. Jahren noch möglich, die Erbkrankheiten der Haut in einem einzigen Beitrag abzuhandeln, so ergab sich nun die Notwendigkeit, den Stoff in ver­ schiedene Kapitel zu unterteilen. Um Überschneidungen zu vermeiden, wurde weitgehend darauf Rücksicht genommen, daß seltene Krankheitsbilder jeweils nur von einem, und zwar demjenigen Autor abgehandelt wurden, der diese aus eigener Anschauung kennt. Diese Aufgliederung bedingt gelegentlich, daß solche seltenen Krankheitsbilder oder Syndrome nicht immer dort abgehandelt werden, wo dies auf Grund der üblichen Einteilung vermutet werden könnte. Im speziellen Teil werden eingangs Synonyma, klinisches Bild und für die Erbbiologie wichtige Laboratoriumsbefunde lehrbuchmäßig aufgeführt.
